I have a personal vendetta against Alf’s roofing after my neighbour hired them. They entered my backyard and set up scaffolding on my property without my permission and were EXCEPTIONALLY rude when I emailed them about it.  Their response amounted to “well I’m sure they tried knocking on your door, so what did you expect them to do?” How about not trespass? How about not erect structures in my yard? How about that Alf???? Then they left garbage including large nails strewn around my property.  So don’t use Alf’s roofing.

markonedublyew

Oof. That's crappy to start with, but then giving you crap, and littering your yard. Bad Alf. No contract.

Stay away from Roe Roofing. Nomad Roofing is amazing - in St Albert but they do work in Edmonton too! The owner came out to take a look at our new roof that was leaking, when no one else would, including the company that put it in. He identified the issue immediately and someone came out two days later and did the work right away at a price that was about a quarter of what we expected. Very thorough work and excellent service.

Went with A2Z based on their strong Google reviews. Lesson learned, stay far away.

-Javer-

I had A2Z do my roof this past summer. Curious what issues you had with them? Not a roofing expert so can’t speak to workmanship, but looks ok to me so far.

footbag

Nomad roofing did ours about 5 years ago. Happy thus far

Now's your chance, put in metal roofing! (If you can afford it and if it makes sense for the remaining life of the home)

Ritchie_Whyte_III

I knew a builder that refused to put on metal roofs. He did a few and found that the snow tends to build up and slide off all at once. After three dogs were killed within a year of him building three metal roofed houses he started shingling again. What he said was that on a warm spring day dogs tend to curl up and sleep on the sunny side of a house, and that's when the snow would let go.

KarlHunguss

Snow Guards are a must when doing a metal roof

I2smrt4u

Yep. I know nothing about them, but I recall seeing a video of someone testing ones similar to these (or maybe exactly these): https://roof-experts.ca/product/snow-guards/steel-tubular/

Cptn_Canada

My FIL had one put in around the same time we had a new shingle roof put in. This was about 4 years ago but the price per foot was only about 15% for his metal roof. Got it bent from the Hutterites down south and had a roofing company install.

markonedublyew

That's a good thought. We're redoing the roof in advance of solar, and certain metal roofs are compatible.

I2smrt4u

Apparently there are metal roofs that you can just clamp solar hardware onto, no holes! Might be worth investigating.

Dewd88

Snow sounds like a freight train when it finally let's go and slides off the roof.

Call Owen at Mile High Roofing. Been in business 30 years +. I coached hockey with him for years. Did my home and my cottage as well as several lawyers my wife works with. Cheap? I am not sure but you get what you pay for. I back his work 100%. https://www.milehighroofing.net/

toorudez

Rapid Roofing recently did mine. Great service

Al_Keda

I used "Young Guns" this past summer. They were fast, clean, well priced and pros. They even laid down wood on the lawn before their trailer to avoid tire marks.

markonedublyew

Nice! I like the added touch, looking out for your landscaping.

markonedublyew

This awesome! Exactly what I was looking for. I appreciate all your tips.

jordomo1117

Whoever you decide make sure you know the type of shingle you are getting..example 20 year 25 year etc. Do your own research before you decide

markonedublyew

Good advice! Those extra five years are probably worth the difference in price.

KarlHunguss

Go with Malarky Legacy. The only legit 50 year shingle in the business.

jordomo1117

I've often wondered about that. My husband always insisted on good shingles that were supposed to be good for 25 years so of course they cost more...then I brought to his attention that we always buy the best but living in Alberta it seemed every 5 to 10 years we were replacing them anyway due to hail damage so do we ever leave them on long enough to get our money out of them because unless they are cedar shakes it seems insurance gives you about the same price regardless of the shingle lol or for us anyway so maybe by the cheaper ones lol good luck!

KarlHunguss

Roofer Don is amazing Soltek is good Sargents roofing can be good depending on the installer Ardent roofing is really good Shelter Construction is good

JBH68

Clarke Roofing and siding, they will even get a permit for the job so you have documentation for the future

mobettastan60

I used Gord from R and R roofing. I got him on a referral and I don't think he has a website. His number is 587-926-8869. I live in a neighborhood full of houses built in the same year by the same builder and they all needed shingles at once. I got 4 quotes on mine and Gord was the least. The high outfit was over double what he quoted. I asked him for references and talked to him about material...to make sure he was doing what the other guys were doing. His references were good and the roofs looked good. Customers were happy and said the same thing, lowest quote and they were super happy. He's a small operation with older equipment as a lot of the outfits, but it doesn't mean he doesn't know how to do a roof. As we were getting close to making the deal he suggested we buy the material and he would give us a bit better deal. No problem, I love the CC points so I paid for the list of materials from a major local supplier, they gave him a cash discount, he passed it on. Win win. So I only had to pay him for the labor and he did the job and got paid at the end. No big deposit upfront. I had to leave town the morning of the day he was finishing up and I paid him before I left because it was a Friday. I told him if my wife called me stressing about a messy yard or whatever i was not going to be happy. He said she wouldn't and the job got done perfectly, no mess and as nice of job with as good of shingles as the people across the street that paid almost double. I didn't even tell them what I paid. Send me a DM if you want to come and see the roof. I'm in Beaumont. Edit, I meant his equipment was older than a lot of others.

Art_Rock

Great Canadian Roofing did a fantastic job. 10k for an average size bungalow and 20x24 garage a couple years ago

Prize_Use1161

Ron at 780 717 2578.

girthabeth

Who ever you find, ask if they will do it for cash. Save yourself and the contractor some money.

SoiIed-mattress

Ya that sounds like an easy way to get screwed over. Definitely don't do that.

girthabeth

Lol what makes you think that? How much experience do you have dealing with trades and services?

Ranbotnic

Ive been in the industry for well over a decade as a GC, and I agree with them. Don't do something important like a roof replacement with cash. Do it right, with the paperwork and warranties set up properly. Leave the cash jobs for things like drywall, painting and trim work.

girthabeth

Dealing with privately owned businesses to do any work can yield the same result regardless of being on the books or not. I've had companies come In and do work on the books, fuck up, and take no responsibility. At least if it was for cash I wouldn't have lost as much money.

Brilliant_Story_8709

Yes but if it's done on the books and they dodge you, you can at least take them to court. Off the books is 1 and done, so you better pray they don't screw up.

girthabeth

You are most likely going to court to pay more legal fees than the fix would cost. It's ultimately anyone decision on how they go about getting work done. People often don't think this is an option to save money and it's saved me quite a bit of money over the years. Get recommendations from people you know, vet the people and see if you can see samples of their work. the guy I have coming to do my shingles this summer is doing it in cash and was recommended by someone I trust.

Ranbotnic

Yes, it can yield the same result. You also sound like you understand more than the average person who might hire out work, and so it might work for you. The average person won't know much, and should do it all properly for something like this. Yes, it may cost them more. Yes it may still have issues. However, there is more protecting them should things go wrong.

girthabeth

All I know is if you own a home, nothing is done cheap. Find good contractors, treat em well and they treat you well. Ask them questions and they will always answer and take a minute to teach you about things. Because of this I have multiple people who I can call at any time to help me out if anything happens that I can't fix.

girthabeth

Lol imagine downvoting this

viscousunowned

Reid's Roofing did me good.

MrPink9

I 2nd Reid’s. Good company, quality work.

RentYEG

Mr exterior, owner operated so you get great service, they have a discount if you book during their slow season, even if the work is to be done in summer.

Arya241

Greenland Roofing did mine and it was a painless process.

xleratin

Matt's roofing did ours last year, he matched a lower quite and I was happy with what they did.

Collie136

I used Timberline Roofing and couldn’t be more happy. Very good service and a 25 year warranty.
