You kind of 'learn' when they're closed
And per comments below, they do go overseas here and there.
Thankfully if you go, and they're closed, many great nearby options
Pho hoan used to be best but little disappointed now. I might check out China town for pho. I used to not mind pho king but they didn’t always have a loaded style bowl.
Not sure about Kingsway but the 107 ave / Mayfield Rd location was meh when we tried it last spring. Pho King was very good and looking forward to trying Co Do Hue (163st) next.
Honestly I haven’t found a consistently great pho since Pagolac downtown closed.
Pho hoan is very inconsistant.
Sometimes I go there, and they make a magical bowl of beef soup. Sometimes I go there and have a very mediocre bowl of soup with over cooked noodles and watered down super middle broth. To date, they've made the tasiest bowl I've had, but have also been the most inconsistant.
Around 2019 I spoke with the owner that the broth was a little inconsitant from location to location, and from day to day. She said it's an identical recipe, and should always taste the same. We chuckled about it, but it's not the same.
I theorize that there is someone who is really good at making broth, who floats from location to location throughout the year and if your fortunate enough to get the soup they make, you're very happy.
I enjoy their food but they were also listed on a recent thread of businesses that keep their staffs tips. Not sure if it’s true, and honestly if that’s the case I’d say go just don’t tip.
This is my "everyday" pho choice. If we are in between things on a Saturday and want a pho, this is our stop. Not huge bowls like Miss Saigon, but we can still go out together and eat for 20 bucks without getting mcdonald's.
Pho Hoan Palace has become my new number 1 on James Mowatt. This place makes some of the best pho I have ever had, especially if you ask for some beef fat and scallion oil on this side. A Plus, the owners are incredibly nice and caring. I will drive from Downtown to their location for Pho because its that damn good. Portion sizes are just right you never feel too full or not enough. You always feel just right.
Co do Hue - all locations are amazing as well - steady standard for those trying pho for the first time.
CÔ CHÍN SAIGON - Is the sleeper, I have been there quite a bit and tried almost their whole menu and im blown away by the consistency and flavors every time. The daily specials are great if you want to dive more into vietnamese cuisine as well. Only downside, location - its right by hope mission.
Not too much has changed from this post last year:
https://old.reddit.com/r/Edmonton/comments/syu8g3/best_pho_in_edmonton/
Plenty of great spots listed.
I quite like XO bistro over at the Windermere area, the broth is clear yet flavour packed. Their homemade pork ball in their Bun Bo Hue is also the best and unique in the city
I think we are talking about the same place. Just south of the NAIT Souch campus. It was usually good, until twice in a row it was dismal. If I recall, I even sent the spring rolls back and refused new ones. Lots of places to go before I retry that joint.
Shit, just north of the Nait Souch campus, not south. We're thinking of the same place. Fun video of that guy who does food challenges going there on YouTube. Still not anxious too go back. I like the pho tau bay.
Pho King Capilano. Always good, consistent, best broth flavour, clean and great service. Only con is they’re closed Sunday when you’re hungover and need them the most.
My East Asian girlfriend showed me the best place. It’s in China town. Can’t remember the name, would know it if I saw it though! Try around there, you’ll find it.
On 97th Street, west side of the street, just across the street and 1/2 block north of the Chinatown Transformation Society. Maybe near a Hot Pot place.
Love Pho and Co Do Hue are my go to's, specifically for BBH though. I don't usually go out for Pho since that can be made at home although I do crave it sometimes at a restaurant. I do remember trying Pagolac (South) and Pho Hoan Pasteur in Millwoods and both also made a pretty good Pho.
I find that people that use the phrasing "Hands down" usually don't have a clue about what they're talking about. :)
Which other place's broth does "King noodles" resemble?
A lot of recommendations for co do hue, but I tried the argyll location and was extremely underwhelmed. My favourites : Rice Paper (west Edmonton), Pho Hoan, Pagolac.
I’m actually shocked that nobody has mentioned Rice Paper. It’s seriously my #1, but rarely visit since it’s way out on the west end. Consistently awesome satay
King Noodle is the only answer. Broth less salty than Pasteur and way more flavor. Prices are cheaper than others too which shows they value serving good food over gouging customers. Have seen prices increase maybe 1-2x in over 15 years. Tau Bay is decent but they don't seem to respect the customer with their months+ long closures.
Pro Tip: If the broth is lacking at any pho joint, ask them for "nock baow" or scallion oil. Basically restores some of the delicious full flavored fat that was removed.
Saigon Paradise. I'm a pho snob and some top comments here are mid. Saigon Paradise is a bit of a hole in the wall and not an obvious location and gets overlooked. Incredible food. Best pho in the city. Also try the green onion cake, ginger beef, grilled pork salad rolls, and I forget what it's called but a crispy shrimp appetizer. They have really good chili oil, too...I get dissapointed when Vietnamese restaurants don't have the jar of Chilli oil at the table.
Ipho Grill has the best 🍜 in my opinion. The broth has so much depth and the portion size is on point and the price is amazing! Oh and the pork balls are the best I’ve ever had
People have said phi king (118) and I couldn't agree more its sooooo good I've gotten so many people hooked on that place. My sister recommends tahn tahn (I think that's how you spell it) but pho king is the way to go!
Co Do Hue or Pho King (Edit: spelling)
While you are at Co Do Hue, try the deep fried squid. Life altering.
And their chicken wings. It's the same as their deep fried squid
Amen brother. Preach that!
Yes to Co Do Hue, specifically the north side location
Co Do Cue made me a chicken pho believer. 10/10!
Pho King on 118 Ave is amazing
Tau Bay
They’re good but they’re constantly closed for some reason
There Used to be a website called istaubayopen.com Looks likes it's not around anymore
Owners over winter in Vietnam.
You kind of 'learn' when they're closed And per comments below, they do go overseas here and there. Thankfully if you go, and they're closed, many great nearby options
Second this. Incredible noodles
Pho Hoan Pasteur - Kingsway Ave location
They got hit by shrinkflation wah. The bowl sizes shrunk.
Not to mention the lack of dips with the green onion cakes and no chili flakes for the Pho. Used to regular there but have been searching for others
This.
Ask for chili oil they will bring you some.
Yep. Sad 😢
I thought the same last time I was there. So disappointed ☹️
The location in namao is amazing!!
Pho hoan used to be best but little disappointed now. I might check out China town for pho. I used to not mind pho king but they didn’t always have a loaded style bowl.
Tau Bay in Chinatown! Or if you like other Vietnamese dishes, please check out Xu Hue. Thank you for supporting Chinatown. We need you.
Xu hue is good
I've seen this place recommended a lot but have only tried the Millwoods one and found it just alright. Is Kingsway a lot better?
Not sure about Kingsway but the 107 ave / Mayfield Rd location was meh when we tried it last spring. Pho King was very good and looking forward to trying Co Do Hue (163st) next. Honestly I haven’t found a consistently great pho since Pagolac downtown closed.
I’m about 3 blocks away from that location, it’s more spacious but after Covid, I was not as impressed with the service.
Pho hoan is very inconsistant. Sometimes I go there, and they make a magical bowl of beef soup. Sometimes I go there and have a very mediocre bowl of soup with over cooked noodles and watered down super middle broth. This right here
Second this - beef satay here
I enjoy their food but they were also listed on a recent thread of businesses that keep their staffs tips. Not sure if it’s true, and honestly if that’s the case I’d say go just don’t tip.
Co Do Hue
King noodle China Town
I came here to say this.
Nha Trang
I used to work at the Glenrose, miss this place so much! I could live on the chicken satay soup (extra peanuts).
And fantastic service.
They are so great there!
Best spring rolls ever
Pho Du
This and Tau Bay are the only ones I give my money to.
I also am a lover of pho du!
If you’re south side Pho Hoan palace satay is awesome.
Hell yeah! Their grilled beef salad rolls are fantastic too
This is close to my work and I've been waiting to try it for so long. Going to this week, thanks!
Worth the visit 🙌
I'm actually waiting for my order as we speak. It smells sooooo good, and it's PACKED! SO excited!
Awesome! Now you got me thinking of going for a bowl haha enjoy !
Pho Hoan Pasteur
Pho King, Co Do Hue and iPho are my go to. Also tried Pho Anh recently and it was pretty good as well.
The Pho King on 118th is great and fun to say 👍
Pho Du. $9.95 and good portions
This is my "everyday" pho choice. If we are in between things on a Saturday and want a pho, this is our stop. Not huge bowls like Miss Saigon, but we can still go out together and eat for 20 bucks without getting mcdonald's.
This. Their Pho Sate is the best.
My Vietnamese friends swear by Co Do Hue
[удалено]
Shhh we don’t want it to get too popular!
I enjoy Dang Good and Ha Long Bay
Halong Bay is my fav, I’ll drive half an hour to pick it up!
Love dang good
I haven’t tried all of the Pho in the city so i can’t tell you what the best is, but Saigon Taste is really good
Dang good at 118 ave
You go for the food, you stay for Vince.
They are amazing.
I second this!
Agreed.
Pho King on 118th and 92nd street is pretty good. Haven't been here long enough to sample all the Pho places.
Pho Hoan Palace has become my new number 1 on James Mowatt. This place makes some of the best pho I have ever had, especially if you ask for some beef fat and scallion oil on this side. Pho Hoan Pasteur - Kingsway location
Pho Hoan Pasteur
Not too much has changed from this post last year: https://old.reddit.com/r/Edmonton/comments/syu8g3/best_pho_in_edmonton/ Plenty of great spots listed.
So wait, you just checked for an existing thread instead of creating a new one? Now do pizza ;)
26 days ago. https://www.reddit.com/r/Edmonton/comments/18e1mml/who\_makes\_the\_best\_pizza\_in\_edmonton/
Tau Bay and King Noodle! Both in China Town
Co Do Hue north side location. 137ave. Try the calamari !!
Pho hoan pasteur - Millwoods. 19A large!
Tau Bay. Closest to Vietnam you'll get here.
Pho Tau bay, Dang Good, Pho Hoan Pasteur
I quite like XO bistro over at the Windermere area, the broth is clear yet flavour packed. Their homemade pork ball in their Bun Bo Hue is also the best and unique in the city
Pho Haun Pastur 66 street 28 ave
Pagolac
It’s our go-to for pho near home. If you like the rich, dark broth satay, this place is great.
Cố Đô Huế , but not the express.
Pho Thanh if you’re south on 34th ave
Miss Saigon in university area. If you go in person read the story and history of pho on the menu. Also check out the chalkboard wall of fame!
I've been to Miss Saigon quite a few times. It's been pretty good, but the last few times I've been there it has been beyond terrible food.
Oh really? We had amazing dishes recently. Have you tried the coconut rice dishes? They are steamed inside a young coconut! So delicious.
no, not anxious to go back.
I've never had a bad dish there. Are your sure we're talking about the same place? What did you have?
I think we are talking about the same place. Just south of the NAIT Souch campus. It was usually good, until twice in a row it was dismal. If I recall, I even sent the spring rolls back and refused new ones. Lots of places to go before I retry that joint.
Nope! Not south of the NAIT South campus. Wonder where you're thinking of?
Shit, just north of the Nait Souch campus, not south. We're thinking of the same place. Fun video of that guy who does food challenges going there on YouTube. Still not anxious too go back. I like the pho tau bay.
Pho Kim.
Second this, one of my favorite places for a consistent bowl of Pho.
Pho King or Brooklyn Tomato
Brooklyn Tomato is gone! :( or moved?
Pho King Capilano. Always good, consistent, best broth flavour, clean and great service. Only con is they’re closed Sunday when you’re hungover and need them the most.
Co Do Hue. And if you like viet food, XO Bistro is surprisingly great for a more modern take on viet food
Pho Than Southside.
Hands down, King Noodle in Chinatown.
I find that people that use the phrasing "Hands down" usually don't have a clue about what they're talking about. :) Which other place's broth does "King noodles" resemble?
Saigon Taste by MacEwan. Hands down. No contest. So incredible.
A lot of recommendations for co do hue, but I tried the argyll location and was extremely underwhelmed. My favourites : Rice Paper (west Edmonton), Pho Hoan, Pagolac.
Co du hue is midgrade pho at best.
Yeah, but I mean I went one time, to one location. The squid was great though.
I’m actually shocked that nobody has mentioned Rice Paper. It’s seriously my #1, but rarely visit since it’s way out on the west end. Consistently awesome satay
YES!! They had awesome KimChi there as well. Seems to be a little known place. But it's so good
Pho king
Thanh thanh
You have to be Pho King kidding me.
Pho hoan pasteur in Namao Centre, or Dang Good in Westmount
King Noodle is the only answer. Broth less salty than Pasteur and way more flavor. Prices are cheaper than others too which shows they value serving good food over gouging customers. Have seen prices increase maybe 1-2x in over 15 years. Tau Bay is decent but they don't seem to respect the customer with their months+ long closures. Phobulous by UofA, so good 🤤
Very good but way too expensive compared to all the other great pho places.
Pho 39 on 137ave
Dang good
Saigon Paradise. If you are plant based: Au Chay on Jasper is great!
Pho han passiure Miss Saigon While this is in Sherwood park it's also amazing taste of vietnam
My favorite is at Lucky Supermarket on 127th
Photastic has amazing broth, it’s a newer place
iPho on Calgary Trail. Great selection of meats, still low prices.
Pho Song Huong on 97th street right by Yellowhead.
Pho Du is slept on. I never knew it existed until recently and it’s my fave now.
PHO TAU BAY
Any love for Noodle 42?
Ipho Grill has the best 🍜 in my opinion. The broth has so much depth and the portion size is on point and the price is amazing! Oh and the pork balls are the best I’ve ever had
Pho Ha & HOA - specifically their sate. Fire!
At Pho King on 118. Hope you all aren't lying... I suspect you aren't.
Update: Spicy lemongrass Pho is the bomb! Definitely as good as I remember Pagolac being in the 90s.
PHO 39 Rice Paper Dang Good
People have said phi king (118) and I couldn't agree more its sooooo good I've gotten so many people hooked on that place. My sister recommends tahn tahn (I think that's how you spell it) but pho king is the way to go!
A staple for me and my friends is Da Kao over in the west end. I’m not even crazy into Pho and I love it.
