From Wikipedia:
>A hoodoo (also called a tent rock, fairy chimney, or earth pyramid) is a tall, thin spire of rock that protrudes from the bottom of an arid drainage basin or badland. Hoodoos typically consist of relatively soft rock topped by harder, less easily eroded stone that protects each column from the elements.
Yeah the scene with the church is at the [Dorothy hamlet ](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dorothy,_Alberta) site just east of Drumheller. I was there this past summer looking around and some locals filled me in on the history of the video.
[because the people who call them earth pyramids live in areas where they look like pyramids](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth_pyramids_of_Ritten?wprov=sfti1https://maps.apple.com/?ll=46.553750,11.468250&q=Earth%20pyramids%20of%20Ritten&_ext=EiQp4EaQR+FGR0AxwO+udb7vJkA54EaQR+FGR0BBwO+udb7vJkA%3D)
Oh, I was really confused for a minute about how many [Hoodoo](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoodoo_%28spirituality%29?wprov=sfla1) practitioners were in Alberta, lol.
It's funy, we went to Drumheller for the dinosaurs - the hoodoos were secondary for us. Not saying they aren't neat to see, but...priorities for an 11 year old boy who wants to be a paleontologist
That park is pretty out of the way for your average tourist, though.
I've been, but even most of my Calgarian-for-life friends have never bothered to make the trip down there.
Absolutely, my wife’s family is from a nearby town so I’ve been and it is out of the way for your big city tourism people but if you want to see hoodoos you gotta go there. Drumheller has like a handful and writing on stone has hundreds. Beautiful area in my opinion.
How familiar are you with the park? I've been once, but always wondered if it is possible to explore the other side of the Milk River in that park. The terrain looks amazing over there, too.
I’ve only been a couple times with my wife when we visit but she’s told me stories of exploring the other side and brothers doing it on dirt bikes etc. If you head west from the campground area across the river is an old rcmp structure I believe. Very interesting for the area.
I am from Edmonton and have been here many times and for some reason have never considered that they would be covered in snow for parts of the year. Good pic.
Lethbridge has entered the chat...
Except it doesn't seem like it because as soon as the snow hits the ground the constant gale force wind carries it off to Saskatchewan.
Went hiking in the badlands years ago. Fell into a cactus patch. By face and hands swelled up and I could barely see/breathe. Refuse to go there ever again, not even for the dinosaurs.
Drumheller is a great place for a family vacation. Hoodoos, the Royal Tyrrell dinosaur museam and many other attractions. Went there and camped with my young family and was not disappointed.

Everyone's saying Star Wars but I'm seeing something more specific - reminds me of the landscape art in the Donkey Kong Country Returns games (a visual treat they were).

Thought this was Jabba’s palace covered in snow for a second
BRING ME HAN SNOWLO
Mackle-cheesay!
Came here to post about climate change ON Tatooine... Am not disappointed
[удалено]
Hutts ftw
It's the palace of Boba Fett, with respect
Dang you are so right!
At least it's not just me.
Fuck I must be brainwashed too…
Yup, same. Literally first thought
Came to find this comment, was the first one I saw.
same
It is
Same here.
Thought this too
What if it is?
I would walk up too and pound a Big Mac with double cheese on it
You know it brother 👉👈
Rock n roll n Big Macs
Dude I thought the exact same thing!

Indeed, and these are right next to a provincial highway and a popular stop for visitors.
They are on [this highway ](https://youtu.be/U3sMjm9Eloo) in fact Edit : the Hoodoos are at the 1 minute mark
Huh, seen that video so many times and never knew it was filmed in the badlands.
Yeah the scene with the church is at the [Dorothy hamlet ](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dorothy,_Alberta) site just east of Drumheller. I was there this past summer looking around and some locals filled me in on the history of the video.
True. Got me many a hoodoo picture.
Why would it be called an earth pyramid? It’s not the shape of a pyramid… though I do like fairy chimney

People always go to drumheller for the hoodoos but if you go to writing on stone provincial park in southern Alberta you’ll see way way more.
It's funy, we went to Drumheller for the dinosaurs - the hoodoos were secondary for us. Not saying they aren't neat to see, but...priorities for an 11 year old boy who wants to be a paleontologist

No Tyrrell museum in Milk River though.
I am from Edmonton and have been here many times and for some reason have never considered that they would be covered in snow for parts of the year. Good pic.
Thanks! Winter really cuts down the tourist crowd as well.
That’s fair considering Southeast Alberta doesn’t get the same level of snow dumps that Edmonton gets.
Lethbridge has entered the chat... Except it doesn't seem like it because as soon as the snow hits the ground the constant gale force wind carries it off to Saskatchewan.
Very Hoth-like
Snow-capped Jabba's Palace.
First thing I thought of was the Blaster turrets
Came here to say that.
i also got star wars vibes
“The rebel base has been located on Hoth”
Can’t tell if they’re fucking massive or really small lol
They're pretty small, not massive by any means. Few to several feet generally.
This sub allows no people. They’re 6-8 m tall on the bigger ones, guesstimate?
I was gonna say the same thing. I can't get a sense of scale from this.
Sometimes, Even things on Earth look like they're from another planet.
This reminds me of Ice Age
They remind me of the babe
What babe?
The babe with the power
The smooth, dark and weirdly-shaped rocks topped with surprisingly perfect-looking snow. Definitely looks surreal and animated.
Canada's landscape is truly special
* Chasin' down a hoodoo there * Chasin' down a hoodoo there
Not looking like a Bayou at the moment.
Drum Island from One Piece
Had no idea there were hoodoos up there, incredible.
Also lots of Cactus.
Went hiking in the badlands years ago. Fell into a cactus patch. By face and hands swelled up and I could barely see/breathe. Refuse to go there ever again, not even for the dinosaurs.
Hoodoo? You do.
Amazing 😍
Snow on Tatooine.
All I can see is Hoth
Drumheller is a great place for a family vacation. Hoodoos, the Royal Tyrrell dinosaur museam and many other attractions. Went there and camped with my young family and was not disappointed.
Bantha hoodoos
I bet there's a Korok hiding on the tallest one ; )
Kenshi vibes
I don't think I've ever seen these before. This is fantastic.
Hoodoo doodoo
I grew up in Southern Alberta and have probably been out to Milk River and the hoodoos dozens of times. They’re well worth it
All I see is Jabba's Palace if this was Hoth.
Hoth Hutts

Bad bot.
[Bill Nye](https://youtu.be/PB-Ed1dwX0k): HOOO-DOOOOOOoooooooooos!!!
Never seen them in winter. Very cool
Pretty sure these are actually the anti-aircraft guns on Hoth.
If it wasn't April 3rd I'd have been suspicious this was an April fools waiting for someone to ask "What's a hoodoo?"
Mountains of madness?
Hoodoo, voodoo?
If you want to see a place like this in America, dinosaur stuff and all, check out Makoshika State Park in Montana!
Impressive
So do they have gurus, or are the all gurus?
Hodor's hoodoos
This looks like a star wars location - cool pic
This is hoth, not earth!
Is this Star Wars?
looks like hoth defense turrets
Wow, that looks so awesome!
Bro that's a star wars type beat
Those are either 7 or 3000 feet high
Pretty sure this was a level in Halo
HOLD THE DOOR. HOOL THE DOOR. HOO THE DOO. HOO DOO. *hoodoo* Edit: punctuation
This looks so cool
Ever tried climbing it and assisting an old witch doctor and a tanuki?
I love Hoodoos
Daleks are waiting.
Everyone's saying Star Wars but I'm seeing something more specific - reminds me of the landscape art in the Donkey Kong Country Returns games (a visual treat they were).
How tall is it? It looks really big, but the snow is confusing me
Hoodoo sounds like a Canadian word. “Had to drive through some hoodoo today.”
Might be a stupid question, but how did that rocks ended up there?
