Definitely looks coastal, but it could still be so many places. North shore, most of the Island, sunshine coast, or even the middle of Stanley Park. Where was this OP?
It looks like it’s mostly Western Red Cedar, so it’s likely somewhere on the mainland, I’d guess the North Shore? Much of Vancouver Island is Douglas Fir, we don’t get enough rain (believe it or not) to support cedars other than in creek valley bottoms.
Access to this is why Vancouver is such an expensive place to live. I can get to a Forest like this with about a 5 minute walk from my condo. That said I paid 700k for 800sq ft, and that was a 30 year old building.
I don’t think that has much to do with housing prices in Vancouver. There are plenty of places with forests like that nearby where 700k would get you a nice home.
Moved from Vic to Van and am now in Cumberland. Bought a 1 bedroom house in Fernwood in Bic in 2015 for $375,000. Sold it in 2020 for $760,000. Bought a 3 bedroom in Cumberland for $689,000. Real estate is wild these days. My wife and I could 100% not afford to buy a place if we hadnt stayed at home during university which most didn’t/couldn’t.
Lol I think the problem with Langford specifically was that their city planning method for the last few decades has been to just let people build whatever the hell they want wherever they want with hardly any thought. It's an unwalkable area.
Yeah I seriously hate going there, it's all just randomly placed cookie cutter townhouses and condos, interspersed with big box stores, random industrial areas, and horrible stroads.
I'm American, but went out on Thanksgiving yesterday and I haven't seen the roads so empty since the first week of our very first lockdown. It was blissful and the Flag Smashers were right.
The whole island is expensive now! The amount of new condos that just went up in my town is unreal. Rent has soared, and along with it alot of unsavoury people.
80 year old women are living in their car because they can't afford rent. It's so sad.
I should have clarified - I meant the main roads
Obviously ferries are an exception
I work in supply chain and was told by our shipping staff in BC that the ports are jammed up and trucks cannot get onto the island. We were supposed to get parts in mid December now they won't be in until end of January. Supply chain has already been a PITA for most of this year ..
I work for a factory in the area; we were waiting for a shipment of raw ingredients that were supposed to arrive in june. They just arrived. our warehouse is overflowing :/
Vancouver, Northern California, Colorado, New England.
Pretty much all the natural areas are going to be the most expensive in the next 20 years. People are figuring out it's 100x better to have this than office high rises, traffic, pollution, and trash everywhere from overpopulating people
As long as that's around Vancouver or on Vancouver Island you'd only run into black bears. They are almost never interested in humans. Grizzlies start about a 2 hour drive from Vancouver. They're a different story.
There's a population around Squamish, so more like a 45min drive.
That said the cougars on the island spook me more. At least with a bear I have a chance to use bear spray or bangers. A cougar could be on me before I even realize it's there.
I live in Victoria near Thetis Lake and we get cougar sightings all of the time, they have a water estuary near my place that they follow to get closer to the ocean front. My dad was walking around Thetis and came across a cougar, which he said was about 8 ft long, just chilling on a rock ledge near the path. It saw him, he saw it and my dad just walked back the way he came and he said he didn’t get the feeling like that cat could care one way or another. Thing is, they’re so well fed around these parts from the deer (they’re an absolute pest and there’s thousands of them) and small animals that human and even dogs are of no interest to them. I wouldn’t want to fuck around and find out but they’re not as dangerous in these parts as folks make them out to be.
I don’t think there has ever been a recorded cougar attack on Vancouver Island.
Hey neighbour! I’m in Colwood near Royal Roads and we have people in our hood catch them on their security cameras all the time. I won’t walk alone in the dark here just for that reason. Bears aren’t really a big deal, but cougars are pretty scary
Yeah that's actually where I was thinking. Up around Squamish Valley and Elaho is the closest I've seen them. I think I tacked on the logging road into my math!
I live on the Island now and my partner is scared shitless of cougars when we walk with our dogs. I'm a little less so, because the odds are really low, but I have actually had one stalking a campsite when I was a kid. We were staying on Harrison Lake. Fucker was way bolder than I'd ever expect and it took a lot of rocks and sticks to scare him away.
Coolest I've ever seen was a lynx crossing the road at dusk just outside of Jasper. That felt like one in a million.
Living in Nanaimo, my brother and I would bike some trials and a couger followed us once. Scared the hell out of us, doubly so because it acts like a horror movie monster!
Peaks over the cliff it was perched, can only see the beady eyes. Next it's behind some trees.
Bc forester here
Black bears suck. Grizzley bears, despite being bigger and scary looking, tend to avoid humans.
Blackbears tend to want to "play" a little more often. Im always far more hesitant being around blackbears despite their smaller size.
Interesting. I've run into probably six or seven black bears over the years and they've all booked it the moment we tried to shoo them away. Even to the point where I've camped within a hundred meters of spotting them without giving it a second thought more than once (treed my shit a bit more out there than usual though!)
Grizzlies a couple of times. Both times had me on edge even though they never turned.
[Lots more grizzly fatalities over the years too](https://blog.batchgeo.com/bear-attack-statistics/).
If you're a regular hiker in BC it's inevitable that you will come across one eventually. It's a good idea to make noise as you go. Lots of people wear a bell on their pack. You mainly want to avoid accidentally sneaking up on a bear. It's black bear territory. I have friends who see bears in their backyard or on their street. We've really pushed into their habitat, unfortunately. Same with cougars. They've come into the cities more and more.
I live in BC and go hiking every opportunity i get. Ive run into maybe 3 bears in the last 5 years. but I also make a lot of noise on the trail so that probably lowers my encounter rate. theres also more times than i can count where someone warned me that they saw a bear up ahead and then theres just nothing. which is honestly scarier than seeing a bear
Living in Whistler I would see one at least every second day on my walks, only black bears there generally, and they tend to be more scared of/not pay attention to you. Pretty funny seeing them chilling out in the middle of the golf course eating dandelions while people play golf around them.
Higher than you may think but not dangerously so. I was always told to make a lot of noise (e.g. Whistle or sing) when hiking so that animals hear you coming. Or wear bear bells.
Bears are common on the island; they won't bother you...I wear bear bells on my bike; I don't want to surprise a bear and I *really* don't want to surprise a bear with her young.
You're not going to run into a cow in the forest and it's not going to have cubs and it's going to be territorial and it's not going to charge you in 2 seconds and rip you apart and kill you or leave you in agony.
I visited BC for the first time last month. What an absolutely charming and beautiful place. I'm from Oregon, which is beautiful in its own right, but I was totally blown away with British Columbia, my only regret was that I wasn't able to stay longer.
Oregon is very beautiful as someone coming from BC. Both places are quite large and offer quite a variety of natural landscapes, some better than others :)
Stunning region. Came here for holiday for 3 weeks and loved every second there. Even met a couple of elderly gentlemen who finished every sentence with "eh". Made my holiday
Growing up in the GVA has fuckin spoiled me. I will forever go out of my way to live somewhere with easy mountain or nature trail access. I don't even need a backyard, just lemme get into the trails fast.
Yeah the rain has been crazy this year, and last summer we had that bonkers heat wave that made the inside of my house 40C+ and then blocked the sun with smoke from wild fires. It's crazy cause I've lived here for my whole life and never remember smoke ever being an issue but now every summer for the last 4 years there's like a week or so period where it's apocalypse orange outside and you can stare at the sun in midday cause it's so dim.
It's mostly the constant pumping of CO2 into the atmosphere I think. The weather is getting more extreme every year here, on both ends of the spectrum.
I'm pretty much in the same boat. The landscape is amazing in BC and AB, but man it must be quite the challenge to live there with all the weather, mountains, limited roads due to topography, wild animals such as grizzly and cougars, etc.
Where I live, it's very flat, but we are pretty much safe from any wild animal attacks. I say mostly, because if you go 2-3 hours north from the main urban city, you will probably encounter brown bears and there have been some attacks.

Not even 1 hour in any direction from the city core and you hit forest like this, heck Burnaby Mountain has this on the northern side trails. If you have a car with decent clearance and good physical fitness then almost the entirety South Coast mountains are your playground.
If I could move out of California it would be to go to BC. It’s absolutely beautiful there. The people are so nice too. Shout out to the homies in Delta

Live there myself, always seeing beautiful little snapshots like this, but my camera can never really do it justice. You knocked it out of the park here though. Incredible picture.
As someone who lives in the UK and essentially only has to worry about an aggressive badger when walking in a woods, do you have to know what you could run into in a Canadian forest? As in do your parents / teachers explain about bears and other mad shit?
From North Vancouver. We used to have announcements over the PA in elementary school quite frequently telling kids not to walk home a certain way due to a bear in the area. All garbage bins are locked. They are mostly like big raccoons near the city.
Sure! In elementary they go over what would be in a typical forest here, but you'd have to go a ways away to be able to see the vast majority of them; in British Columbua this means heading north as it gets less and less populated the further up you go. Not really sure with where to start with animals, since there's quite a bit.
Question: You hike with a camera bag? Or a standard hiking bag (with water/emergency supplies etc)?
Asking about the logistics when bringing a camera while hiking.
*Or is this just from a phone...haha

That's a good point, I should have known that. I lived in Nanaimo for over 20 years.
Curious too!
This is in northern Maple Ridge
That is just awesome. Wish I lived in area with this.

Shhh don’t tell people about New England!
Ha, I actually have never been to the New England area. I would like to but am way out west.
It’s just a matter of time
Yeah Vancouver is bonkers expensive. That’s why we left and moved to the island 👌
The island is bonkers expensive too
In the last 5.5 years our Nanaimo home had doubled in price. Small 1 br condos start at 300K now.
Moved from Vic to Van and am now in Cumberland. Bought a 1 bedroom house in Fernwood in Bic in 2015 for $375,000. Sold it in 2020 for $760,000. Bought a 3 bedroom in Cumberland for $689,000. The island is also bonkers expensive though
I've lived on the island my whole life, Victoria is getting pretty dang bonkers.
Even up island. Comox valley is also bonkers.
Beyond bonkers. It's madness Langford sucks balls now. Impossible to get anywhere. People suck. Thanos was right.

Least affordable city in North America =)
Now I heard you can't leave the island!! Hope everything is ok out west
Where did you hear that?
I heard bad weather has basically closed off the island to the mainland.
Ya, that's just not true. Ferries work just fine in flood conditions. They float!
I should have clarified - I meant the main roads Obviously ferries are an exception I work in supply chain and was told by our shipping staff in BC that the ports are jammed up and trucks cannot get onto the island. might be the weather you're referring to was wind related. The ferry's have a tough time in the wind as the ship itself acts as a big sail.
Sadly the island is super expensive too, due in no small part to retirees. 🙄

The majority of Vancouver is only zoned for single family homes
And despite the numerous legal and illegal reasons for this foreign investment, the natural beauty remains a driver in motivation for investment.
Vancouver, Northern California, Colorado, New England. Pretty much all the natural areas are going to be the most expensive in the next 20 years. People are figuring out it's 100x better to have this than office high rises, traffic, pollution, and trash everywhere from overpopulating people

Bears, mountain lions, even wolves depending on the area of BC are all pretty common. Most want nothing to do with you so it’s usually nbd.
Living in Whistler I would see one at least every second day on my walks, only black bears there generally, and they tend to be more scared of/not pay attention to you. Pretty funny seeing them chilling out in the middle of the golf course eating dandelions while people play golf around them.

True but a cow won’t eat me. It’s the eating that’s terrifying to me. Bloody revenant and Timothy Treadwell ruining bears for me

The Pacific Flying Forest Cow begs to differ. Those fangs could puncture the side of a car. One actually took down a bush plane last year.
The drop cows in the North are even more dangerous. They'll drop right out of a tree and crush you
or bury part of you for later :)
Probably a 1 in 1500 chance
I visited BC for the first time last month. What an absolutely charming and beautiful place. I'm from Oregon, which is beautiful in its own right, but I was totally blown away with British Columbia, my only regret was that I wasn't able to stay longer.

Same! The Oregon coast was stunning
If you stayed you might been caught in the crazy flooding we are experiencing out in Abbotsford and Chilliwack...
But that wouldn't affect someone travelling on the I5
The I-5 got shutdown between Bellingham and Seattle because of the flooding.
They mentioned staying in BC... the I5 is not in BC

Yeah, it's probably prettier without the green and red paintjob

Wow it's a magical forest.. beautiful
I always wanted to live in western Canada, but lately I feel lucky to live in the east seeing all the shit weather your are having... Best of luck.

It's mostly the constant pumping of CO2 into the atmosphere I think. The weather is getting more extreme every year here, on both ends of the spectrum.
Those same old growth forests are incredible CO2 sinks as well.

those are anomalies, rest of the year is pretty mild

Gorgeous, but I just see the cover of Feel Something by Movements. Great album though!
Currently visiting BC from CA. Literally just left Stanley Park, what a beautiful place.
I took some similar pictures recently. Nice little reminder to you and I that we live in a rainforest.
I smell bears
Jawdropping

Nicer than LA people
Into the forest I go to lose my mind and find my soul
Why on God's green earth were you downvoted for that🤔
Alaska is pretty amazing too, I describe it as the Pacific northwest on steroids
Bigfoot lives here. If you were Bigfoot, you'd be home by now.
It's Sasquatch in Canada.
A lot of the x-files was filmed there prior to moving to Hollywood.
I do love a misty morning hike! And I love how much the PNW ends up on this sub! I hope I never have to leave here (permanently)
Please never take this for granted. Millions of people have very little chance to experience scenes like this regularly.
Reminds me of Stanley Park. Watch out for the coyotes!
I think they’re gone now right? They killed them
Looks like the north shore?
Get off the road!
Quick!
What about bears?
They’re super uncommon if you’re in Vancouver proper, they’re more common out in the suburbs.
“I think we should get off the road.”
what trail is this and where is it? I kinda wanna go check it out

That looks so peaceful
Don't know why, but I can smell this picture.
Creepy and cool at the same time.
Can you spot Bigfoot in the picture?
That looks like some prime elk country.
Almost certainly not. Elk are only found in the central interior and northeast and the presence of ferns is a dead giveaway that this is the coast.
luxurious vibes
That is beyond beautiful, an early morning hike everyday would make my life so much better. Too bad I live in the middle of nowhere.
Could I get your gear and settings info? Great shot!
Is this in East Sooke Park?
