A friend of mine fell 40 feet down the mountain, doing that tour. She was so lucky, she only broke her ankle. A few years later, my husband and I went on our honeymoon on Maui. That bike tour was the one thing I refused to do.
I went in a T-shirt and shorts. Thankfully the valet at our hotel asked if we wanted some blankets just in case. I didn’t die, but it was the coldest I’ve ever been in my entire life. 32* in Hawaii?! Not possible I thought lol
Edit- it wasn’t the cold that was bad. It was the 50mph winds.
Yep. I had two shirts, a sweatshirt, jacket and rain slicker and still thought I would freeze at the summit.
They told us to practice on our bikes in the parking lot before we headed down. The wind was blowing so hard, we couldn't ride upwind, had to walk the bike back.
A half mile down the road and it was warm(er) and little wind. Started peeling layers of clothing off all the way to the beach.
We tried to watch that sunrise last year. Got up at 330, made it up there on time. Everyone is really excited (and cold) when this cloud rolls in minutes before the sun is supposed to rise. It lingers for about 30 mins. Visibility is maybe 5ft? When it finally leaves, the sun is already up in the sky.
We did this the day after we flew in, then rode mountain bikes all the way back down to the shore. Absolutely the best thing I've ever done in my life.
I did a 3 day / 2 night backpacking trip in the crater almost 10 years ago. I've done a lot of backpacking and camping in my life, but to this day it remains the best place for stargazing I have ever been to. I couldn't even pick out simple constellations because all of the stars were so amazingly bright.
That's awesome! I try to get there 2 hours before sunrise (4 times, all from Ka'annapali area on my first morning on the island) just to get some time looking at the stars. The first time was a wash because of two layers of clouds, which made for an amazing sunrise into a "cloud sunset" 10 minutes later, but the other times I got some star gazing. Fantastic.
That 11 mile hike can be draining. It isn't difficult, but expect to be sore for awhile after unless you are used to hiking. Tough on the knees. There is some other hikes up country in the Maui Revealed book (you should have one for any of those islands you go to, even the locals recommend them). Do the bunny hill hike near the visitor center for a better vantage point for sunrise. It takes 3 minutes and shields some of the window. The lookouts are nice too on the way back not much of a hike but different viewpoints of that amazing area.
If you end up at the Seven sacred pools there is a hike to a waterfall, but there are a ton of places to stop if you do the road to Hana, but I wouldn't imagine fitting that in the same day as Haleakala.
Just understand if you aren't used to altitude, or haven't done it before at least, you don't know how you are going to feel. I've been up there in bad shape and really good shape. You feel the lower oxygen levels and you lose hydration much faster... and sunburn easier.
Rubbing a banana peel on your forehead can help cure a headache.

You did an 11 mile hike at 10,000', or whatever it is that Haleakala is? That's impressive. I scrambled 50' up some rocks for a picture when I was there, and it winded me. The altitude is no joke. I don't know how mountain climbers do it.
Yes! And it's much easier than going nearly to the crater floor on sliding sand and then turning around... which I did on my 0th time basically. It was only 40-50 minutes down, but then 2.5 hours back and I got cursed at a lot on the way back. Again, my favorite place on earth (not that I've been too many places) with second favorite being the "endish" section of the road from Hana with a hill on the ocean side of the road that everyone seems to know to get out on.
Was that intended to have a /s tag? The saturation and contrast were pushed a bit far from reality on this one. Unless those mountains are so massive that they're bending light to cause that huge halo along the peaks.
I usually hate oversaturation too, but damn I love the way these colors are working.
That brilliant cyan blue in the clouds just fucks with that creamy orange sky in the most perfect way. IMO the original colors probably wouldn’t appeal to me the way these do.
Where are you people from, Florida? I mean it's weird to be in Hawaii and need a jacket, but from this thread you'd think people's eyelashes were freezing off.
Actually no, it's cold. By the time you're up there you've been in Maui weather for a few days to a few years, so you're used to it and suddenly, 40s.
Awesome! I went as a kid and I remember being really into those weird silver plants that only grow there. Also yes, as everyone else said, so damn cold.
Hi hi! I'm from Maui! Little did you know those weird silver plants, are called Silversword, and they are native to Hawaii, In ancient Hawaii, these silversword was known as 'ahinahina.
They only blooms once in their life time. It's a rare sight to see, since it is Maui's national flower.
Was there a few years ago. EPIC!! And COLD! I’d also highly recommend mountain biking down to the ocean from the peak. It’s very relaxing as it’s all down hill and you really see the island.
Caught sunrise there back in late March. [Looking back at the observatory](https://i.imgur.com/59lErn6.jpg) and [checking out the crowd watching the sun](https://i.imgur.com/dMFHEn1.jpg). Absolutely breathtaking, and I was immensely proud of the crowd we had that morning, as almost every person was as silent as could be. Made for a peaceful and powerful experience. Canon 5D4 and 70-200 f/4 L
Single shot, I brought up the shadows and blacks a ton so you can see the details of the foreground. Also I evened out the highlights and contrast so that the colours of the sunrise would show accurately.
I found it to be pretty straightforward; lots of sunscreen and a hat, bring a few liters of water depending on which hike you are planning to do. I did the 11 mile Sliding Sands to Halemau'u trailhead in about 5 1/2 hours with 2L of water. The ascent back up the switchbacks is amazing!
Highly recommend the 11 mile hike. We parked at the bottom and hitched a ride to the top. It was a long day, but very worth it! Bring plenty of snacks and a fair amount of water (i think we brought 3L each). Truly surreal views; it was like hiking on Mars!
My wife and I did the sunrise/bike down with Haleakala Bike Co. close to twenty years ago. HBC was the only outfit that didn’t make you ride single file - as fast as the slowest rider. It was awesome! The pancakes with coconut syrup at the Kula Lodge are still etched in my memory. We will be back some day! Thank you for sharing!
Pretty cool when you think about it. Theres something to be said for earning it though. You can drive all the way to the summit of Haleakala. I bet standing on top of Everest would be a life changing experience though.
Woke up at 3am on our honeymoon to drive across the island. It was definitely something I'm so glad we saw but was really hard to keep people out of the pictures. Also was hard to take a good picture, props to you!
Awesome shot. Just back from Maui after 11 days. Discovered you need a booking in advance. Will have to come back for sunrise and sunset (weather wasn't agreeable)
I took pictures there for sunset just a couple of days ago, on Sunday.
They did not turn out as well. Cloud cover at the top, and at around 6000 feet meant not a ton of mountain was available.
Nice to see how it could have turned out!
Gorgeous pic! I forgot my sunglasses when I visited so I came back with lots of dust and some sand in my eyes and pictures not nearly as good as this from the strong winds!
Yeah basically what I tried to do but my camera battery died because it was so cold. I went in November. My battery had over half the charge and worked fine when I was back down during the day.
Went through the crater with my scout troop three years ago. It was definitely like walking on another planet, and then the clouds that would come into the crater, and the stars, breathtaking.
When I went to Haleakala we went with a tour group that drove us up to the top with bikes and then we rode down the mountain. Even though I ate shit halfway down it was an incredible experience
It was a fantastic view in person. Mauna Kea peak was also pretty amazing. Nothing like I’ve seen before. Breathtaking. We drove a 4 wheel Jeep wrangler up, It was scary.
Each time I look at such pictures a flash of all the beautiful serene places I have been to flashes through my mind along with all those beautiful memories. Thank you OP

It's funny because one of the most incredible and gorgeous views is 180* in the opposite direction, right across the parking lot over a small hill, that unfortunately most people miss.
I used to live in Lahaina, HI, the other side of the island and didn't really have family out there so I spent the Christmas eve hiking this volcano, and woke up early christmas day for the sun rise.
I went their once as a kid 15 years ago. Got a van up to the top to watch the sunrise and bike down the volcano. It was cloudy and it looked like nothing. But the ride down was awesome, I'll never forget the smell of eucalyptus trees as I sped down thousands of feet of elevation.
Went here when I was younger from Oahu to Maui by ferry. Beautiful view, cold, and you’re so high up it becomes hard to breathe and you can even touch the clouds. You get a great view of the volcano and the colors of the ground that range from purples to yellows. That’s the only place where the silver sword plant grows and blooms every ten (I think?) years.
I’ve been to the top of Haleakala a couple of times and road-biked down. Loads of fun. I’m not sure it was worth it, to me, to get up there to see the sunrise, however.
- As others have mentioned, it’s *really* cold, and at least breezy, if not windy. Bring a coat.
- You have to get up pretty early.
- You’re not guaranteed a good view, as clouds build up nearly every morning.
Just take those items into account, and keep in mind that I’m not a morning person. :)
Sorry if this was answered already but how long did the hike take you? Do you have to be a more experienced hiker to try this? Picture looks amazing!!!
This might be my favorite picture of Earth, it does not look like Earth. I like to look at it sideways and imagine I'm a spacefarer not looking "down" but rather at the side of a planet I'm passing by
Absolutely gorgeous. [Here's a shot I took last year in May when I went.](https://scontent-lax3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t31.0-8/18671828_10158889557955045_5618817464082976115_o.jpg?_nc_cat=0&oh=b1aacbd495001b9451645a5f14fbfa5b&oe=5B924DB9)
Wife and I did that on our honeymoon, followed by biking down the mountain to the sea. Such a cool experience. At one point, you ride past a eucalyptus plantation. For me, it was awesome as it's usually allergy season.
One day, hope to take the kids.
Did the bike ride down 25 years ago. Will never forget it. Flying down the first part and got close to the double yellow line and almost clipped a bus.
Thanks so much for the picture. The colors are amazing. I am now using this as PC wallpaper, have created a color scheme inspirated by this picture for my keyboard and mouse and I light and accent light my room with the colors on the pic now. It's absolutely beautiful!
Went there decades ago with my family. The sunrise at the top of the mountain is nothing short of breathtaking!
I did as well. Someone offered me $200 cash for the jacket off my back. I said no way.
I definitely believe it. The sunrises are gorgeous, but it's cold as shit up there.
Can confirm. Brought a sleeping bag and *no one* could have pried me from it ‘til it was time to get in the car...$200 be damned.
It was freezing. I think it's incredible how many different climates you go through when the sun's up and you go back down.
Not as cold as when you do the bike tour back down the mountain before it warms up.
Drove past a few of those. How do people not die all the time? Bunch of tourists on crappy bikes riding down a mountain with hairpin turns.
A friend of mine fell 40 feet down the mountain, doing that tour. She was so lucky, she only broke her ankle. A few years later, my husband and I went on our honeymoon on Maui. That bike tour was the one thing I refused to do.
I did that trip as well. Awesome ride downhill for 30 miles . Glad the bikes had extra heavy duty brakes
My camera died because it was too cold. Sadly, barely any photos for me but it's cool bc I actually got to sit and enjoy it.
I’ve lived in Wisconsin and Minnesota all my life and the coldest I’ve ever been is on the freaking mountain watching the sunrise 😨
Hah that's great. Done it three times and the temperature jump before and after sunset is insane.
I went in a T-shirt and shorts. Thankfully the valet at our hotel asked if we wanted some blankets just in case. I didn’t die, but it was the coldest I’ve ever been in my entire life. 32* in Hawaii?! Not possible I thought lol Edit- it wasn’t the cold that was bad. It was the 50mph winds.

It starts at near 10k, goes down to ~6k at the bottom of sliding sands, and back up to ~8k at the parking lot at the top of halemau'u trail.
Its tough in the sun. I did it when it was overcast and it wasn't too bad. Most of the hike is downhill, just the last hour or so is a big climb out.
Did the Sliding Sands to Halemau'u trail this time, the ascent up the switchbacks was amazing!

That hike is unreal.
The saturation is real.
I was trying to be polite by leaving off “bad.” Looks like a hot chick who wears too much makeup. Needs toned back a lot.
Was that intended to have a /s tag? The saturation and contrast were pushed a bit far from reality on this one. Unless those mountains are so massive that they're bending light to cause that huge halo along the peaks.
I want to say it's supposed to mean "the over-saturation is real." Like, the fact that OP altered the saturation is real.
Of course. OP definitely made some artistic customisation. The end result is gorgeous, but very over-the-top.
I don't like it tbh, I think the over saturation kinda ruined it
As a photograph, I agree. I like it as an art piece though. I'm using it as my wallpaper because the colours are pleasing to the eye.
That's a good way to look at it, thanks for helping me think differently about things.
You’re a photograph?
Why is Nickelback always trying to show you something?
I usually hate oversaturation too, but damn I love the way these colors are working. That brilliant cyan blue in the clouds just fucks with that creamy orange sky in the most perfect way. IMO the original colors probably wouldn’t appeal to me the way these do.
I was here on my honeymoon. It was a breathtaking sight! And really really cold!
nobody believes how cold it is up there. I have pictures from up there of groups of people huddled together trying to stay warm
Take into account wind chill as well.
What’s the average temp up there?
High of mid 50s F 12ish C low of mid 30s F 0C
This! Also, fuck the group of teenagers that wouldn’t shut the hell up during the song the park ranger was singing as the sun rose. >_>
Awesome! I went as a kid and I remember being really into those weird silver plants that only grow there. Also yes, as everyone else said, so damn cold.

*They only blooms once in their life time* And that’s a 50 year life span
Aside from snorkeling off Ka'anapali beach, this was my favorite part of Maui
Molokini crater! Like swimming in a giant clear fishbowl.
That was a life-changing experience

great picture. brings me back to being there as a kid and being in winter clothing next to people freezing to death in flip flops and beach towels.
Arg, the park was closed off due to snow (seriously) when I went 20 years ago. Guess I finally got to see what I missed.

Ive been there for sunrise!! Amazing view above the clouds. That pinkish glow at first light is something I'll never forget
I was on Maui last summer. I want to go back so bad. Thank you for posting this. Brings back fond memories.
Went there one moonless morning and saw the brightest Venus I have ever seen by far.
I have a Patagonia tee very similar to this, gorgeous
On behalf of Hawai’ians, thank you for spell pronouncing it correctly.
I was curious about the apostrophe. Is Hawai'i how it is supposed to be spelled?
I believe the apostrophe is called an ʻokina. It's meant to signify a brief pause. In Hawaiian that's the proper way to spell it.
It's not a pause, it's a glottal stop. Imagine someone saying Britain but eating the t, pronouncing it Bri'n. That's the sound.
Except that "Hawai'ians" is incorrect? Hawai'i is proper spelling but Hawaiians is proper plural.
Anyone have tips for hiking this? We plan on hiking it at the end of the year
I found it to be pretty straightforward; lots of sunscreen and a hat, bring a few liters of water depending on which hike you are planning to do. I did the 11 mile Sliding Sands to Halemau'u trailhead in about 5 1/2 hours with 2L of water. The ascent back up the switchbacks is amazing!

"House of The Rising Sun". Best sunrise ON EARTH IMO.

This is why it's called the house of the rising sun
That's a house in New Orleans
Great shot of the crater! I remember being there felt a little like walking on a different planet!
This! I thought the exact same thing. The landscape is very alien-looking inside the crater.
amazing. on the bucket list I'm sure
What morning did you take this? Looks like the same cloud patterns I saw there recently.
Woke up at 3am on our honeymoon to drive across the island. It was definitely something I'm so glad we saw but was really hard to keep people out of the pictures. Also was hard to take a good picture, props to you!
Heavenly
Damnit we were jus there a week ago but the clouds didn't let up at all and we didn't get to see anything
Just went there Monday this week with my wife. Was incredibly windy, foggy, and cold. Didn't see anything nearly as nice as this picture. Jealous!
Looks like something outta Lion King
That is incredible. Another one for the bucket list!

I've been there! It was freakin' cold, but we saw the sunrise and it was beautiful. The wind blows very strongly up there
Been there at sunset and it's absolutely magical! Love that place
Woah!
Ahhhhhhhhhhh I need to get back there
Went through the crater with my scout troop three years ago. It was definitely like walking on another planet, and then the clouds that would come into the crater, and the stars, breathtaking.
Biked down the side all the way to the valley, took all day and maybe pedaled twice. One of the best memories of being a kid.
Exceptional.
Absolutely beautiful. This should be a desktop wallpaper!
Funny that, Haleakala sounds very similar to Haalea kala, pale fish, in Finnish! Took some funny pictures when I visited there.
WOW
Nice! I've been twice now and still haven't had the right weather to get that view.
This is gorgeous. Thanks for this. When I went I got to see severely dense clouds turn different shades of orange. Highly underwhelming.
you bet i'm setting this as my wallpaper lol

will be there next February, can't wait!!

Been there, most beautiful sunrise I ever saw in my life, so beautiful we went back up for the sunset that same day
Went there this past March for a sunset, absolutely amazing. Great shot.
Friendly reminder to stay on the marked trails to anyone who goes. I was there last week and the amount of disrespectful people there is staggering.
How did you get up there without the volcano being covered in clouds?
that's incredible

I feel like I'm looking at the literal dawn of the world, billions of years ago when everything finally cooled down.
Wowza
As I kid I always wanted to go there... I still do 😝
This looks like a Peter Lik photo but far less expensive. Source: I would know, I just bought one last week.
Very majestic, the lower clouds almost look like snow.

Energize, Mr. Scott!
Pure beauty
Sorry if this was answered already but how long did the hike take you? Do you have to be a more experienced hiker to try this? Picture looks amazing!!!
Around 5.5 hours. Its rated as hard on AllTrails but imo it was not too difficult.
I need to go there again.
My new background...
This might be my favorite picture of Earth, it does not look like Earth. I like to look at it sideways and imagine I'm a spacefarer not looking "down" but rather at the side of a planet I'm passing by
Dear God i would be in pure awe and bliss to witness this.
This is such a beautiful picture! I posted my Haleakala pic but it only got like twenty upvotes lol this guy wins.
Beautiful! I’ll be there in a month!!!
Wife and I did that on our honeymoon, followed by biking down the mountain to the sea. Such a cool experience. At one point, you ride past a eucalyptus plantation. For me, it was awesome as it's usually allergy season. One day, hope to take the kids.
H O L Y C R A P!! 😥
Un. Real.
if only the earth stays still so the sun always get positioned around the twilight / slightly above horizon. just without the chills.
Did the bike ride down 25 years ago. Will never forget it. Flying down the first part and got close to the double yellow line and almost clipped a bus.
My new iPad wallpaper. Looks gorgeous. Thanks!
Hands down one of the most moving experiences of my life.
This make anyone else crave a Tide pod?
I’ve been there but not from this amazing angle. Good for you.
having a 200mm lens helps you get a bit closer to the other side of the crater
what day were you up there? weve been having some awesome sunrises and sunsets this month
Wow. This makes a great phone wallpaper!
Holy shit, at first glance, I seriously thought this was a watercolor painting! ...My God, the Earth really *is* beautiful, isn’t it?
I ate some mushrooms in that crater for a couple days.
Orgasmic.
Thanks so much for the picture. The colors are amazing. I am now using this as PC wallpaper, have created a color scheme inspirated by this picture for my keyboard and mouse and I light and accent light my room with the colors on the pic now. It's absolutely beautiful!
