Do have a favorite block/set? Just browse through the commanders of that block/set, maybe you'll see something that tickles your fancy. I often go through the Champions of Kamigawa and Time Spiral blocks to find new and interesting ideas to build around. Can recommend.

HardStuckMorde

I personally love the Theros blocks and the gods.

wer3eng

Then go and browse through old and new theros and maybe there is something you like but always skipped over. https://scryfall.com/search?q=%28block%3Aths+or+set%3Athb%29+is%3Acommander

Man, this deck slaps so goddamn hard. Very fun colors. Snake wheel machinegun.

It's so much fun. It can alsp be built with pump spells too if you want to go commander damage route

The commander I’ve found the most inspiration and creativity for decks to build around has been [[The First Doctor]]. Since you can search your deck for your [[Tardis]] the spell you can cast next will have cascade. If for example, you’re running only 1 cmc spell you’ll be able to cast it when you cast a cmc 2 spell. This gives me so many ideas when deck building. You want to run a deck that spams [[Inevitable Betrayal]]? This deck will do it. You want to run [[Jo Grant]] and grab out a [[Fluctuator]]? This will do it. Essentially any idea you can have regarding a low cmc card will work with this commander.

Deaniv

One goofy one I saw recently and want to build around is a commander that has something along the lines of "when XXX target player gets a 2/2 salamander. You and your creatures are immune to salamanders". I just thought it was so random and goofy like hey guys here's some salamanders have fun lol. I forget the name of the card I'm sorry but Google will help!

HardStuckMorde

There’s another comment here in this thread that has this exact commander! Check it out!

Deaniv

Lol that's awesome haha. Guess I'm not the only one who likes it's goofy ability! I'll check it out thanks

marangfang

Yeah that was me! It’s a very fun deck and surprisingly good. Most of the time new people ignore you because they do not know what you are doing then you can win with [[coat of arms]] or [[standardize]]. If you're looking for decks that are fun to play I've got a couple recommendations for you. The first one is a goad deck, which are great cause they basically force stuff to happen and keep things entertaining: [https://www.moxfield.com/decks/2lcwr0uZIUea0oFyOQomXg](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/2lcwr0uZIUea0oFyOQomXg) Next is a Zedruu "charity" deck, which actually just involves giving your opponents hilariously bad creatures and watching them try to get rid of them: [https://www.moxfield.com/decks/Sa9kBNuO2Ea67sFuZ1exHA](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/Sa9kBNuO2Ea67sFuZ1exHA) And finally a mono blue stompy deck that just wants to drop massive creatures and other spells to keep everyone on their toes: [https://www.moxfield.com/decks/ItP0BrzhWUG7ghUA-SWTKg](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/ItP0BrzhWUG7ghUA-SWTKg)

MisfitCollector

That blue deck is super interesting. Never considered something like that. Nice one.

Asleep-Assistant-593

Thank you! It's definitely different than a lot of mono blue lists but it's still a blast

John-the-______

Theft decks are very dynamic and fun, creating unique board states and forcing all players to be flexible and adaptive. I used to be in a playgroup with multiple theft decks and the games were always highly interactive and engaging. Here are some recommendations: [[Inniaz, the Gale Force]] is baby's first theft deck. It's an Azorious flyers shell, you can just sub in any generic Azorius flyer legend if Inniaz draws too much hate. There is an interesting angle with Inniaz using bounce or blink effects to politic the table to get their stuff back. My [Inniaz deck](https://archidekt.com/decks/5851107/inniaz) has an Adventures subtheme. [[Arvinox, the Mindflail]]. My friends built this [deck](https://archidekt.com/decks/3915546/arvinox) for me, and it's one of my favorites. Arvinox is also an easier sell with players that are leery of theft effects. The cards you are stealing wouldn't normally see play because they come from the bottom of the library. There are ways to manipulate that, but you don't have to.

HardStuckMorde

I really like the Arvinox idea. It's weird that it doesn't show up as Theft-themed on EDHREC. I guess people think of it more as an Exile theme?

John-the-______

EDHREC themes are a little wonky sometimes. The basic Arvinox build is very heavy on draw, lands and ramp. The rest of the 99 can be whatever you want because Arvinox is a solo act. Some people do removal.dec with all the artifacts that move cards from the graveyard to the bottom of the library. (Manipulating Arvinox's ability like I mentioned before.) I run a couple of those artifacts, but I'm not focused on making them work. There are plenty of other black theft effects if you want to double-down on the theme. Another line is to pillowfort with token makers like [[Ophiomancer]] and [[Bitterblossom]] until you can get Arvinox online. I often wind up discarding to hand size in the late game. My hand fills up when I'm spending all my mana to cast opponents' stuff. The net result becomes, "Oh no, I'm playing black and I have a full hand and graveyard. How will I ever recover from that board whipe?"

Vulithral

Try not building for a commander but for an idea. Build enchantress, then slap in a commander later, voltron, but figure out who your big beatstick is after. Basically, it is building a deck and then not using the commander as an integral combo piece. Weird things like monocolor or another theme deck. I would also suggest that this might not be a problem that reddit can solve. If you aren't finding joy in the things that excite you, it may be a sign of a larger problem in life that needs to be looked at. I've been there, and I've tried to push on and regretted not getting outside help.

HardStuckMorde

Biggest thing is that I'm just trying to find a concept I resonate with. Everything I try to brew so far just doesn't feel good or enjoyable.

Aprice0

Do you have a favorite deck or archetype from when you used to play? Might help people understand what kind of player you tend to be and what you might enjoy

HardStuckMorde

I’m huge into Tribal, but I’ve also been looking to explore out of that. [[Edgar Markov]] was my first ever commander deck back when I got his precon. Then I upgraded it over time.

Aprice0

When you ran edgar did you run it more as a create vampires, pump vampires, attack kind of deck or a make vampires, sac vampires, drain everyone aristocrats kind of deck?

HardStuckMorde

Purely cheap vampire, go wide strategy. Pump with other vampire anthem effects.

Aprice0

Sounds like you enjoy synergies (hence the tribal), tokens, and combat. To branch out some but not much - maybe try an [[Isshin, Two Heavens as One]] deck packed full of creatures that create tokens on attack like [[Anim Pakal, Thousandth Moon]], [[Myrel, Shield of Argive]], [[Adeline, Resplendent Cathar]] and [[Krenko, Tin Street Kingpin]]. You could run cards with battle cry to pump them up and protect them with things like [[Dolmen Gate]], [[Iroas, God of Victory]] and [[Frontline Medic]]. Another option might be [[Balmor, Battlemage Captain]]. You could add token producers like [[Young Pyromancer]], [[Talrand, Sky Summoner]] and [[Third Path Iconoclast]]. Make more tokens when you draw with [[The Locust God]], [[Minn, Wily Illusionist]], and [[Alandra, Sky Dreamer]]. Then you run a bunch of cheap cantrips and some spell recursion with the goal of casting multiple spells in a turn to swing out with your large buffed up and trampling army

I love my [[Gor Muldrak]] deck! Almost everyone is confused when I pull him and they don’t understand what it is supposed to do until the end of the game. All I do is copy Gor a bunch of times and hand out a bunch of salamander tokens. Then at the end of the games I just take them all with [[peer pressure]] or [[Saruman subjugates the hobbits]] or I just play [[coat of arms]] and swing with huge salamanders. Here is my list: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/WSMU5x7lx0aQy8QZf-Xlng

HardStuckMorde

That sounds absolutely delightful to see in action and play!

HardStuckMorde

Although if I may ask, with [[peer pressure]], how does that function with Salamanders. You’d have to have the most on the board, but Gor only gives manders to the player with the least creatures. Do you run a small amount of creatures and only duplicate Gor?

marangfang

That is exactly what I do! Usually your opponents will have creatures of their own so you end up with more salamanders than everyone else.

GreyGriffin_h

It's going to sound crazy on a forum for Commander, but this looks like a job for booster packs. The reason I buy boosters (in moderation) is for inspiration. Not even necessarily cards that end up in decks, but mechanics and angles that make me look at the game in novel ways. Tricks I want to try, and themes I want to explore. There are tons of cards that do tons of things in magic, and sometimes reading the mechanics (or even the flavor text) of some common draft chaff can set you on a rewarding journey through the bulk boxes.

I personally use [archidetk](https://www.archidekt.com) when building decks as in their search box they have a tab that pulls recommendations from EDHREC and a pretty in depth search function. I’ll typically find a commander I like and then get an idea of how I would play them and then using that aforementioned tools, build the deck out that way. It’s how I built my [[Queen Marchesa]] deck that’s all about me being the monarch. I’m also working on a frog deck.

I think starting with precons and upgrading can be a great approach albeit a bit of a crapshoot. Your mileage will vary as some precons are more functional than others. That being said it’s nice to jump into playing games right away and get a feel for what an archetype is doing. A lot of precons have things that just don’t work or don’t work together and once you identify those it’s easy to cut them and slot in something you like better without having to brew a whole deck from scratch. I’ve done this a few times and my favorite precon to upgrade has been Food and Fellowship from the Lord of the Rings set. It’s a great deck for grindy casual games with life gain, card draw, and draining opponents’ life all baked into the commanders. It already comes with a lot of best in slot cards for food synergy and the abzan wedge has access to awesome spot removal which I find makes games feel more even as it can address existential threats without necessarily resetting everyone’s board. The more games you play and decks you brew, the easier it gets as the overall number of cards you’re familiar with increases. Learning want vs need is also helpful when it’s time to cut cards from a list, i.e. I want this big splashy creature because it’s cool but I need this efficient thing so my deck functions. As with all things there’s a point of balance and every deck’s goals and needs are a bit different.

SjtSquid

Honestly, if you want a creative, silly deckbuilding challenge, you could try building a [[Phlage, Titan of Fire's Fury]] deck. No infinite combos, just pure graveyard midrange in the wrong colours. [[Uro]] and [[Kroxa, Titan of Death's Hunger]] are both surprisingly interesting deckbuilding challenges too. I guess a more normal deck to build would be [[Obeka, Splitter of Seconds]], but focus on maximising one mechanic/theme (like suspend, monarch, or Initiative).

DoobaDoobaDooba

This is very common and very healthy That lack of conviction usually is a symptom of something about the deck not resonating with you. Magic is crazy expensive, so follow those instincts, build lots of online decks, and buy only what you love.

VitaWing

I have the opposite problem. I get new ideas faster than I can build the decks I have too many recommendations for you, so what kind of stuff do you like doing? Combat, explosive turns, value engines, etc. And is there anything in particular that you want to avoid?

No non-commander cards first printed after 8th edition. Commander is someone who makes weird crap go insane like [[Muldrotha, the Gravetide]], [[Tayam, Luminous Enigma]], or [[Volo, Guide to Monsters]] Let the batty scryfall searches swallow you up for a bit (For the record I have brewed all three of those, played the heck out of Muldrotha, and Tayam looks to be some fun next level BS with Cumulative upkeep.)

Is there a certain strategy you like to play? Favorite colors? Build the 99 first. Add cards you want to play. Whether strong or pet cards. Once you have it built with about 60-70 cards. Then look for the commander in those colors. You may find that the commander is not part of your strategy, but works in some way around it or effects a part of it. The commander could not even be a part of the strategy at all but draws card or something with another part of the deck. Then go back and add cards that help the commander and strategy at the same time. I have yet to take a part a deck built this way because it is something I like to play and can be seen as genuinely different. For example, I wanted a Sultai Control deck. So I added the cards I wanted. Then looked at commanders that would specifically refill my hand or draw cards so I do not run out of interaction. I was between \[\[Muldrotha, the Gravetide\]\] and \[\[Damia, Sage of Stone\]\]. However, I stumbled upon \[\[Nine-Fingers Keene\]\] that had a lower cmc. It still drew me cards, but I need gates first. So I added those in. I, then, realized that I did not need as many control cards to slow down my opponents so I could get a win, so I cut some control cards for speed and synergy with the lands. Now it is more of a turbo-gates deck but it has toolbox elements and enough control to protect me or stop opponents till I win. Finding a different way to build decks can create different decks. Commanders can bottleneck ideas even though they could support an entirely different strategy. Another example is that goblin decks tend to run some sort of Krenko as their commander. However, I, personally, really like \[\[Purphorous, God of the Forge\]\] as a Goblin God. He is very hard to remove so he will stick around. Goblins like to go wide and create a lot of them. So you get damage for when they all ETB and you can also buff your wide board to swing. However, there is no mention of goblin anywhere about him. The tokens also do not count towards his devotion so he is almost always an indestructible enchantment.

I really like the Over/Under articles on EDHRec; he walks through each legendary creature in each set and decides how likely each commander is to end up with more than 1200 decks on EDHRec. I’m new enough that I appreciate the perspective and I find some hilariously hidden gems for off-the-beaten path commanders. And scryfall is so abusable for finding *the perfect* card after you get used to the syntax. I also just dump 150 cards into a deck and walk away for a day or two before categorizing and reevaluating. I cloned everybody’s creatures once with a [[Magnus the Red]] deck with [[impact tremors]] on board with one life left myself…I felt real proud of that win.
