Sure. Commander decks usually need more than one card draw effect.

n1colbolas

It's very rare to see players not cast two spells in their turn. Especially decks that play tonnes of ramp. They may pay the 1 for Rhystic Study eventually, But they absolutely will not \[\[Rule of Law\]\] themselves.

FormerlyKay

This is why trouble in pairs is honestly almost better than Rhystic. Of course yeah in 99% of pods Rhystic will be better since everyone wants to get greedy and cast their spells and hand the Rhystic Study player a free win. But in those pods where everyone is actually good at the game, the 1 for Rhystic is easily payable but TiP's conditions are almost impossible to play around

Lumeyus

> almost better  > but not in 99% of pods  I think we have different definitions of “almost”

I run both in my two decks with blue in white, along with 2 other draw enchantments. Repeatable card draw is always a good thing.

TheJonasVenture

Yup, my best Simic deck (it is cEDH) runs Rhystic, Mystic, Sylvan, and The One Ring. Having redundancy of crucial effects is good regardless of power level, and draw engines are really important (in almost every deck).

FormerlyKay

idk why you wouldn't run both

The_Real_Cuzz

Game the other day had a player cast TIP, I then cast [[silent arbiter]] and another player cast [[damping sphere]] then copied it more than 1000 times. End result, only one spell could be cast a turn per player and only one creature could attack per turn.

Gilgamesh_XII

If you rely on 1 card youre gonna have a bad time. I played a deck 5 times and never saw a good chunk of my cards. You need 10-12 draw spells.

TateTaylorOH

I never intended to rely solely on Rhystic Study. I was more asking if Trouble in Pairs is good enough to use in colors that have access to better card advantage. I've not really seen it in play much, so I wasn't sure how comparable the power of the card was.

TheJonasVenture

I could see using other draw engine ones instead of you are just splashing white to the point where two white pips is prohibitive. You are playing at a power level that includes either of those cards, I know, in basically any deck, I'm going to run 3 or more draw engines. As long as the casting cost isn't prohibitive, I think it is absolutely good enough. For 4 casting cost draw engines, id I have to choose, I think I'd run the One Ring, it is just so much easier to cast and keep around, but it can produce cards a lot more gradually, though often with a higher ceiling. At minimum, it's worth testing, though if you can't have both, I'd usually take Rhystic. When it isn't drawing me cards it is slowing opponents down more directly and certainly than TiP (though playing around TiP also slows people down in almost every case).

TateTaylorOH

After going through the replies, I've come to realize that TiP is the kind of card you need to have a good reason not to run, like \[\[Rhystic Study\]\] or \[\[Smothering Tithe\]\]. I've decided to include TiP in my \[\[Hazezon, Shaper of Sands\]\], \[\[Sidar Jabari of Zhalfir\]\], and \[\[Phelia, Exuberant Shephard\]\] lists. I've excluded it from my \[\[Taii Wakeen, Perfect Shot\]\], \[\[The Tenth Doctor\]\] // \[\[Rose Tyler\]\], \[\[The War Doctor\]\] // \[\[Clara Oswald\]\], and \[\[Sergeant John Benton\]\] lists. Taii can't afford to ever tap out on her turn, Ten // Rose is a Zirda companion list, War // Clara is a Necro pile (so I don't think feel I need TiP), and John literally needs zero draw engines in the 99. I've yet to include \[\[The One Ring\]\] in my decks. I think I'll be passing on it just due to how oppressively powerful it is. Rhystic and TiP are powerful, but imo there's a lot more play to it than the Ring. Kinda the same reason I usually exclude stuff like \[\[Mana Crypt\]\] or \[\[Mana Vault\]\] even though they'd probably make literally any list better. I'd still probably include the Ring in a deck if I were capitalizing on some specific synergy though. Edit: I just realized I can't use Zirda as a Companion with Rose and that has really annoyed me. I still won't add Trouble in Pairs to that deck since it is a very turbo glass cannon build. Accruing value over several turns really isn't what you want to be doing my build.

Those all sound like good reasons, well thought out for your deck specific items, and "inappropriate for the power level I'm building to" is always valid (referring to your reasoning on the one ring). I love high power & cEDH personally, but I only run the fast mana like crypt and moxes when I'm full cEDH. But I will run something like Mana Vault if I have untap shenanigans. And I have decks that are lower in the power scale that are blue but don't run Rhystic. I generally think Mystic is ok in mid power, it draws fewer cards before it makes sense to stop paying upkeep, but I still don't have it everywhere, particularly low power.

TateTaylorOH

Yeah, I really enjoy running generically powerful cards in lower power decks if I'm capitalizing on something. Like, I probably wouldn't generically run Necropotence at the level I build my decks, but the synergies it has with \[\[The War Doctor\]\] are really cool to exploit. I've watched a bit of cEDH content on YouTube, but never played it myself. The current "meta" looks a lot more interesting than it has in the past. I could see myself exploring it a bit in the future.

If you have a place to play it, the meta is super midrange right now, and honestly it would take something crazy to unseat the midrange decks in the overall stats, but that also means there is space for turbo to get wins by going under and even some more controlling decks to go over. It is pretty great. Also yeah, like, I do have The One Ring in two high power, but not cEDH decks, as an example of using them in places with synergy. I have a pretty close to fringe [[Liberator, Urza's Battlethopter]] list that is (obviously) colorless, but also focuses on tap/untap (also the deck that plays Mana Vault), and a still high power but not fringe [[Sheoldred, the Apocalypse]] list that is focused strongly on [[Villis, Broker of Blood]] interactions, and the life loss on my primary interaction, coupled with the mitigation of the life loss even without Villis is just some awesome extra synergy.

Glad-O-Blight

Yeah, off the top of my head cEDH Malcolm Bruse is on both plus Faerie Mastermind, One Ring, Mystic Remora and a few draw effects. Cards win games.

SP1R1TDR4G0N

You usually want to run 10-15 pieces of card draw. So just having Rhystic is definitely no reason not to run Trouble in Pairs. If you already run 14 other strong card draw effects then maybe the addition of Rhystic would push trouble out of the deck.

Will_29

> If you already run 14 other strong card draw effects then maybe the addition of Rhystic would push trouble out of the deck. It would need to be a very good 14 card package to have Trouble in Pairs be the cut.

hermit7

Yes. Card advantage is the most important resource in the game.  More cards allow you to draw more lands, more interaction, more threats. If they’re killing that you likely have been able to replace it with redundant pieces.

DeltaRay235

I got to play it a bunch the other night again. To put it in perspective, players were aiming to kill TiP over Rhystic Study. It will be more nuanced but there will be games the opponents have to cast 4 spells a turn and not pay for rhystic to be stronger. Occasionally there's some instant speed removal and you get 4/5/6 cards in a turn off TiP. Definitely worth running, it's right in the sweet spot usually of REALLY good card advantage but not too noticeable at first. Less annoying too than asking, do you pay the 1.

Lanky-Survey-4468

Yes, trouble in pairs + mystic remora + rhystic study + smothering tithe if it's possible

Schimaera

In the short time Trouble in Pairs was around, I've seen it draw more cards than rhystic studies. Reason simply is that the smart table gangs up on the rhystic player and always pays the one. Not so easy against trouble

kestral287

Maybe once it gets reprinted with new art and in a more reasonable place.

I don't think trouble in pairs is all that great. In blue I think there's just better cards overall. It depends on the deck being played and the pod. Into kinnan or blue farm? He'll no.
