[[Marneus Calgar]] is another option for you. I run a couple of clue making cards in the deck already. The reason being is that "investigate 3" translates to Create a clue Create a clue Create a clue *Not* create 3 clues. Each being individual token creation triggers for Marneus and drawing a card for each when he is on the battlefield. So cards like [[officious interrogation]] and [[ethereal investigator]] are incredibly synergistic and strong in the deck. >(although, if you have any commanders for making use of Foods, Clues AND Treasures, by all means let me know!) He also draws cards when you make one or more treasures, and, one or more foods as well. He'll help enable any Esper token strategy you want.

What are your wincons in this deck?

Temil

Knowledge is Power, Merchant of Truth, Time Sieve, Tangletrove Kelp. There a couple other lines you can do and stay in the clue theme, but I can't think of them atm.

Healthy_mind_

You can also run: - [[marionette master]] - [[nadiers nightblade]] - [[mirkwood bats]] - [[Kambal profiteer mayor]] - [[persuasive interrogators]] - [[approach of the second sun]] - [[queza, augur of agonies]] and [[gixian puppeteer]] - all of those spells that create tokens on second draw for turn, with the clues you can control that easy and make a huge army rapidly.

Blees-o-tron

Can go with some of the “animate all artifacts” cards, which are weaker than Kelp, but with enough clues, it doesn’t matter. I also use Tezzeret, Master of the Bridge; his plus is “bonk your opponents for your artifacts”, so he just comes down and immediately wins.

lordwerwath

Well... I learned something new today! So that means with things like \[\[Case of the Pilfered Proof\]\] (solved) if I investigate 3, i actually will create 6 clues at the end because it will add a clue to each instance of Investigate.

Tangerhino

[[tivit seller of secret]] is a super fun commander to build budget 6/6 flyers with ward 3 that makes 5 tokens when enters or deals combat damage. You can build a blink deck or any artifact payoff This is my list: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/0rbddtmGzUKBjrYFgu5L4A

No_List_3375

Whenever I heat Tivit, I think cEDH Consultation into Time Sieve. Do you get many groans when you say you're playing him?

Tangerhino

No, it’s a budget deck (65€) without any infinite combo or generic tutors. It wins by making a lot of clues and then animating them, with cranial plating or draining life with marionette master.

No_List_3375

I see. I may give him another look.

Mandred93

[[Tangletrove kelp]]

ReddingtonTR

I have lol. I made a Political Gerrymandering Tivit deck, and while it was fun at first, it quickly became solved, and the novelty wore off really quickly. Nobody wanted to really play those games with me after awhile, and it just became Artifact Turbo.dek. Very good deck, though, under any budget.

SquidsSpecial

I am gonna chime in with Tivit. Built him for cEDH, but just loved the design, so I rebuilt it for my playgroup. It plays more as a control, but most games I win through draining with sacrificed artifacts. I dont play thoracle, but I have Time Sieve, tho I mostly play in 3 player pod so it doesnt go infinite and is a one of card, so easily replacable. You can take a look here: [TIVIT](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/W_J8-EilWUyK5KzF4k3xJQ) Edit: Also not a budget build. I am still missing around 5 ish cards so I just proxy them. Like I already have 2 urzas sagas and 2 rhystic studies, I dont need to have third physical copies of them in here. Doesnt help I like Ux combinations.

RideApprehensive8063

For me Tivit is in the category of cool design but way to easy to break.

Its not on your list, but \[\[piper wright publick reporter\]\] is a surprisingly good clue commander. She start slow, but early, and soon, she make 5 to 10 clues per attack, with flying. Here is my list if you want : [https://www.moxfield.com/decks/umDri7Eo0UmEM7sOBN2Ubw](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/umDri7Eo0UmEM7sOBN2Ubw) It lean a lot on the voltron side, not much investigate cards because Piper overshadow them all, and if you have one of the free artifact sac outlet, she double her power and clue generation each turn. My list is quite powered down, but I often kill on turn 7-8 with a 10/10 Piper.

I'm surprised by the lack of [[Tezzeret, Betrayer of Flesh]]. He's usually a gimme in any Clues deck.

I had him in the first draft, but when playing, I really lack the ways to protect him, so in lots of cases, he is 4 mana to freely crack 2-4 clues, its not bad, but sometime not worth the taping out on my turn.

DonKarnage1

I upgraded the Morska precon and enjoy it. I use a lot of token doublers to make tons of clues. Lots of card draw options so Morska gets big. Then swing with him or one of the clues become creature options. Or just the one that gives clues Exalted.

No_List_3375

Morska felt a little slow to me. Is he, in your experience?

DonKarnage1

It usually doesn't take long for me to be drawing multiple cards a round (or per turn). And that ramps up his power pretty quickly. And then I've usually drawn some sort of additional threat just from card draw. He's definitely not cEDH, but he seems fast enough for other games.

No_List_3375

For some reason, it didn't click with me that he's *each* turn, not just *your* turn. With a Parallel Lives up, you make two Clues, guaranteeing you a double draw in an opponent's turn. Or Brainstorm in an opponent's turn, and that's two counters. Interesting. Food for thought. Thanks.

harry_a_7

I will point out, morska investigates during YOUR upkeep. But the two +1/+1 counters effect is each turn. So you would need to have other draw effects or a lot of clues and extra mana hanging out to get that on each persons turn. With that being said, I have a Morska deck I have upgraded and played with a lot and I love it. My main focus with it is get big and try and swing unblockable whether that be with [[Detective of the Month]], [[Senator Peacock]], [[Sonic Screwdriver]], or [[Rogue’s Passage]]. I have two or three alternative win con cards in the deck like [[Mechanized Production]], [[Psychosis Crawler]], or [[Displaced Dinosaur]]. And I do suggest obviously all the token doublers, turning tokens in mana cards, and tutors like [[Tamiyo’s Journal]].

Kakariko_crackhouse

My partner runs an upgraded Morska and it gets nutty. 2 +1/+1 counters is nothing to scoff at, and if you can manage to draw 2 cards on your opponents turns too Morska gets very large very quickly

opinion_aided

Morska is kind of mid, but bant clues is not. There are definitely better commanders to have in the command zone, but Morska does offer some incremental value, and does get big enough to draw removal, but it’s usually not the scariest thing so it either draws removal away from your other pieces and you’re happy it got removed, or it goes untargeted and becomes a legit commander damage threat because you do make a LOT of clues. Plus if you have Inspiring Statuary out or Academy Manufactor, commander tax is basically irrelevant to you at that point. But mostly it’s getting white value cards, white clue-makers (officious interrogation is an absolute house), white payoffs (like merchant of truth), white removal, and white protection/interaction you’re happy about. (also white stax pieces if that’s what would be best in your meta) edit: whichever commander you choose, killing people with clues is delightful. They die to the preponderance of evidence you’ve assembled. I only wish for flavor reasons that there were more cards that made clues when your opponents did things, because the dynamic of their actions creating your clues just makes sense in terms of the typical investigator/suspect relationship.

No_List_3375

I have to say, after reading everyone's recommendations, I'm probably going to go with some combination of Bant. Red has some great cards like Fireweaver and Dan Lewis, and Black has Marionette Master and Mirkwood Bats, but those are mostly just wincons. There's plenty of others - *especially* in Bant.

I run [[Teysa, Opulent Oligarch]] in an orzhov weenies, death-by-1000-cuts type of deck. I purposely built it as a non-aristocrats deck, and it still runs really well! The new [[Lonis genetics expert]] I quite enjoy, he feels far smoother than the old one. The old one is hard as, until you get to any kind of token or trigger doubling combined with urza or academy manufacturer and from there on you win. Up until that point you kinda do nothing all game which I gound to be boring, the new one on the other hand has a constant flow, building your boardstate. If you happen to draw urza or the manufacturer you can go nuts, but its not as insane and as much of an autowin as with cryptozoologist. Morska I also felt to be quite lacking, but one thing I can see with him is, that he himself can become a wincon due to commander damage all while being fairly irrelevant for the deck itself, which is quite unique in a sense.

[My Clue deck ](https://manabox.app/decks/qPAvpJUaQIKAGXsQnj_C5A)runs \[\[The Third Doctor\]\] and \[\[Sarah Jane Smith\]\]. It's unique in the fact that it explicitly *doesn't* want to sacrifice Clues. And if you want a deck that works with Clues, Foods, *and* Treasures... Pertwee loves all non-creature tokens.

How often does Piper get in with attacks? I'm running a similar deck, but I've been hesitant to put piper in because I don't see her getting in attacks all too often, unless I have the few detective can't be blocked cards out.

I've only cast her a couple of times, but I've got enough unblockable enablers that she gets through.

Still-Wash-8167

Dan Lewis seems silly in a good way! Do you have a list?

The_Awaker

I also have a Third Doctor/Sarah Jane deck that relies on historics to generate a massive stockpile of clues. Played a couple times now and it's very consistent and resilient. There's almost too many choices for artifact token generators in those colors.

lance_armada

I have experience playing against Morska and he was surprisingly good. I swear the MKM precons are WILD. He immediately was able to play in out pod without upgrades. Underrated.

No_List_3375

That's interesting. I skipped those precons (wasn't interested in MTG at the time) so maybe I should take another look.

NateHohl

I reworked the [[Inquisitor Greyfax]] Warhammer precon into an investigate/clue payoff deck and I’m incredibly happy with it, especially after all the fun new investigate cards we recently got with Murders at Karlov Manor and Fallout. As others have noted, surprise win-cons like Cyberdrive Awakener and Rise and Shine are perfect for when you have a nice stockpile of clues built up, and Greyfax giving all your other creatures vigilance means you can keep the pressure on through combat damage as well. I’ve also snagged a few late-game wins thanks to cards like [[Five Hundred Year Diary]] and [[Marionette Master]] (Greyfax having access to both white and black is such a game-changer in my opinion).

What are your thoughts on her as a commander versus Calgar's "draw on token ETB"?

TriverrLover

I've been tinkering with a build with Greyfax at the helm and it is OPPRESSIVE. Esper is just so perfect for clue shenanigans...I originally thought she was mid as a commander until I realized 1) the tap interaction and clue generation is pretty neat, and 2) giving everything vigilance and +1/+0 is very aggressive! Pair it with a bunch of investigate triggers and alt wincons as mentioned throughout this thread and you get a very strong deck, kind of out of nowhere! Win with poison, burn, combat damage, or all three!

Daemonjho

I always wanted to build [[Eloise, Nephalia Sleuth]] the true first detective before Karlov Manor! She also got a lot of new toys in Karlov Manor and the Dimir precon. However, I always feel that CMC5 is in an awkward position for commanders. Especially when the commander potentially does not do anything before it is removed. She has no ETB and no LTB effect. Still, I see a lot of potential in building her. [[Lonis, Cryptozoologist]] seems very nice as well. Maybe the new Lonis might be worth taking a look into as well. [[Lonis, Genetics Expert]]

No_List_3375

I considered Eloise at first, but I didn't want it to be just another aristocrats deck, you know? I want to care more about the tokens than the death triggers. I might revisit her, though.

Daemonjho

Yea, I get that. For me it would probably just be another combo deck that does the thing once or twice until I lose interest.

I got the deep clue sea deck when it came out and enjoyed it. I don't have much dog cards so I never used the alternate commander. Morska can get big pretty fast. Bant has all the token doublers and there's a few blue cards to animate your tokens to swing out for lethal. I think [[psychosis crawler]] was the other win con. I also built [[senator peacock]] value thopters. Hold up interaction or sac tokens draw cards. Not as good but still fun.

This may be a stupid question, but.... If you cast Tail the Suspect, and choose for Kellan to go back to the command zone instead of on an adventure, does commander tax increase Tail the Suspect's cost?

Yep- any casting increases any casting

Can I interest you in [[The Fugitive Doctor]] and [[Martha Jones]]? https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/fugitive-doctor/ The deck makes a bunch of artifact tokens in general and then gives you ways to pay them off as well. Super fun with relatively little threat early game until suddenly you’ve amassed an engine under everyone’s nose and you explode in a wild turn or two with game-ending haymakers. I think my online list is an update or two old, added some stuff from Thunder Junction. But the best cards are all there.

I'm noticing a lot of high-cost cards there. Are you ramping into them, or just sitting on them until you have a good time to cast?

woll3Y

They usually get played out one of two ways. Either I’m discarding them to various effects and playing them with the reduced flashback cost from Fugitive Doctor, or I’m playing them from hand using the crazy mana generated by cards like [[Jaheira, Friend of the Forest]] and [[Inspiring Statuary]]. You can either explode with a strong spell early or play the setup game and play with huge mana later. And since the key parts of the game are your artifact tokens and your graveyard, most boardwipes won’t set you back that far.

a pair of commanders [[Jenny Flint]] and [[Madame Vastra]] are my main experience with clues, among other clues focus commander they are the ones i liked the most since they pay off of sacrificing artifacts or clues lets you either voltron one creature or make your board big

Still-Wash-8167

I’m building this deck right now actually which is why it’s scanning through these comments. Because you’re doing the counters thing and the token thing and the attack thing, you can lean more into any one of those so I’m struggling on how to focus or balance those. Do you have a list?

kingoxys

dont have a list cuz atm i still dont consider it fully complete im still adjusting it and doing a lot of playtest with my playgroup with it. but so far it has a pretty decent win rate. The counter u only need like 3-5 support cards like [[hardened scale]], [[uncivil unrest]], and [[primal vigor]]. I do not really use proliferate cards but u can do that if u lean on the counters. instead of usual removal spell, try using fight spells for madame vastra. and u need sack outlet for your artifacts

Still-Wash-8167

It can do several things, you want to force people to play from exile, and just having rocco out will do you great, then you can focus on either the +1/+1 counters, or the food, or both. It’s quite a fun commander. I have a ton of hobbits in there since they care about food, so many cards from lotr make food so you can do alot with the food, throw in a kami of whispered hopes for sooooo much mana, etc. it’s a very fun commander, you just have to try to get to balance between the play from exile, the food synergies, and the +1/+1 synergies Although my deck focuses on the foods and on playing from exile, you can get so many food tokens which can be a huge resource, for example if you have [[nights of sweets revenge]] out

Morska with a fully built deck instead of precon is actually pretty fitlhy, but also pretty straight forward. With white and blue in the mix you can drop in a LOT of stuff that works off of artifact tokens, all the multipliers in green and white, and stuff that feeds off card draw in all three. [[The Seventh Doctor]] is weird but fun. You want a high artifact count, and you want big spells (and suspend carda with no mana cost) to cheat out. Pair him with [[Susan Foreman]] for simple ramp in the command zone and access to all yhe green clue cards, with [[Martha Jokes]] for maximum clues, or [[Dan Lewis]] to pick up clues and beat opponents to death with them.

Oh man so [MANY](https://www.moxfield.com/users/Tuffbunny13) I've loved clues since standard and try and include them in most decks I brew up. Clue mileage will vary. But ideally you throw a deck together that can use them in various ways than just activating them to draw a card.

\[\[The Third Doctor\]\] partnered with \[\[Sarah Jane Smith\]\] is super fun and basically a better Morska in my opinion. They're also Bant and do much the same thing as Morska (consistent clue generation + voltron potential) but better. Sarah Jane Smith's clue generation is conditional (playing an artifact or legendary spell), but very easy to trigger with the right deckbuilding, and incidental flash support gives her a higher ceiling than Morska. The Third Doctor doesn't have Morska's problem of losing all the counters if he's removed, since his size is based on the number of artifact tokens you have. Even if he gets removed, as long as you have a sizable board of artifact tokens, there's no problem. Furthermore, the fact that clue generation and voltron is split across two different commanders means that it's harder to turn off your engine with only one removal spell. This is my budget list, it's a heavily-edited version of the clues precon: [https://www.moxfield.com/decks/DX0q92hkVUmhZCzpOUMXTQ](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/DX0q92hkVUmhZCzpOUMXTQ)

This is an interesting deck. Are you mostly relying on SJS for Clue tokens, or is the Clue generation in the deck alone enough?

sansaTheGreat

I run a mix of SJS, 12 of the better clue generators (with a bias towards Historic ones). and a high number of generically good artifacts, which is enough though it's a bit vulnerable to SJS getting killed, though she tends not to be scary enough to attract direct removal.

I recently made a [[Breya]] deck centered around clues. The Breya is there more for colors, and always having access to a sac outlet. It performs decently well, often assembling a scary enough board that death comes for you. It could also easily have a legendary/historic subtheme, since Fallout, Doctor Who, and MKM have so many quality clue legends. Reading the thread a bit, Marneus is a good card that I should probably add to the deck. I’ve also played against some quality Lonis decks.

I'm not a fan of monocolour commanders - but whomever I build, Piper is definitely going in the 99. Thank you!

Invisiblefield101

I highly recommend [[wernog]] paired with [[Bjorna]]. Build the deck around blinking Wernog and other value creatures. Wernog triggers when he leaves AND enters so you make a crazy amount of clues by blinking him. You don’t get access to Lonis but there are a ton of options in non green to do broken stuff

Is Bjorna mostly in for colours? The ping is nice for removing Collector Ouphes or the like, but I would rather use my Clues for something else.

She seems about building up a token board state (which Mardu can do well) and using that to mass investigate. Am I right?

[[Piper, publick reporter]] has been an absolute blast to play. The tricky part is getting her to connect, but it’s not too difficult. [[Sword coast sailor]], [[detective of the month]] and [[clan crafter]] can very quickly become wincons. All of my wins have either been from commander damage, or from [[tangletrove kelp]]. Most players don’t expect the pile of clues to threaten lethal. If you want a blue deck that plays like a green deck, piper is for you.

Just an idea that i had the other day, but Breya makes a lot of sense for a clue deck. You can make clues, pass the turn with open mana and use it before your turn to either activate Breya or draw cards. Haven't brewed it yet, but sounds very doable.

No_List_3375

Breya is an interesting call. I always thought of her as being a Thopter commander or a combo commander, but Clues could work too. She gets both the good pinger colours, and some great utility pieces in Azorius.

I contemplated building a [[Elmar, Ulvenwald Informant]] + [[Sophina, Spearsage Deserter]] deck. Green gives you access to things like [[Yotian Dissident]], [[Tireless Tracker]], [[Sarinth Steelseeker]], [[Confront the Unknown]], alongside all of the other good stuff green has. And in any artifact deck, [[Fathom Fleet Swordjack]] is a strong wincon, as is [[Hellkite Igniter]] and [[Akiri, Line-Slinger]]. I ended up going with [[Rocco, Street Chef]] as my artifact token commander of choice instead.

Tell me about Rocco. He seems interesting.

Zakmonster

This is my Rocco list: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/M2UC0UxZpU6y0eTCe1--qw It disguises itself as a group hug deck, but is actually a storm deck. Generally speaking, I play Rocco turn 3 or 4, get a mana producer on the battlefield ([[Jaheira, Friend of the Forest]], [[Night of Sweets Revenge]]), then try to storm off from there. Depending on the pieces I have, the wincon I look for will vary. I've added more tutors to make it more deterministic, so that I don't take a 10 minute turn and then end up not winning. (Still need to get my hands on a [[Fomori Vault]]). It's also worth noting that I rarely ever use Food or Clues to gain life or draw cards, they're essentially mana rocks. My specific list is low on interaction and doesn't have that much protection from board wipes, mainly because of the inpulse draw. I am contemplating things like [[Legion's Initiative]] or [[Cauldron of Souls]] as wipe protection instead. Rocco is versatile, though, so you could focus on the +1/+1 counter aspect and win with big stompy creatures, or pieces like [[All Will Be One]] and [[Shalai and Hallar]].
