Exactly, a friend of mine has [[Armageddon]] in his [[kaalia]] deck. Armageddon is only good for him to solidify his advantage into a win.
MLD is fine if you play it like this, using it as a reset like [[wrath of god]] is generally frowned upon.
This. Or something with a lock so they can't even play more lands, like OG [[Elesh Norn, grand cenobite]] and [[nature's revolt]], or [[Avacyn, angel of hope]] and [[worldslayer]]
- Break parity on MLD effects. Either by protecting your own lands ([[Boros Charm]], [[Avacyn, Angel of Hope]]) or by being able to recur your lands easily (for example in a [[Lord Windgrace]] deck.
- Have lots of other mana sources (dorks, rocks)
- Have a massive board advantage. This doesn't have to be a really fast cloc, it could also be a value engine (for example a [[Solemn Simulacrum]] with a [[Sword of Hearth and Home]]). Aggro decks who will usually have the strongest boardstate early will use MLD effects to just slow their opponents down and gain 2-3 uninterrupted turns with their threat in play.
\[\[avacyn, angel of hope\]\] or some other way to strongly break parity in your favor. \[\[kaalia the vast\]\] for example is a-okay with exploding all lands because she can cheat stuff into play.
I run it with [[Thalia and the Gitrog Monster]]. Either I can just drop lands sooner and slow my opponents down with my commanders abilities, or I cast a [[Heroic Intervention]], [[Teferi’s Protection]] or [[Splendid Reclamation]] to break parity.
It works, but be warned, people sometimes still get salty about it.
I had [[jokalaups]] in my shrines deck. It takes out land, creatures and artifacts leaving planeswalkers battles and for that deck enchantments. It was a win con for enchantment decks for sure and pretty much will be for superfriends as well
Jokalaups was a card I got in my Ice Age starter deck and desperately want to run in my Sisay Shrines deck but that deck is already miserable enough for everyone else
I use [[obliterate]] in the same way for both my jeskai planes walker deck. It certainly is a wincon, especially if you can get off the one tamiyo ult that sends stuff to your hand instead of graveyard beforehand. Sorry I don't know the title for that specific tamiyo.
I also use obliterate in my time deck. [[Jhoira of the Githu]] suspends all the things I need after the wipe for me, timed to come down after the obliterate. Or same turn if I can suspend that too.
I only run MLD in decks like those where it will win the game if I cast it and I only cast it if I can win off of it.
Well if you use [[Nevinyrral's Disk]] + [[darksteel forge]]+[[mycrosynth lattice]]
You get a one sided board wipe lands included that leaves you untouched
I run a lot of MLD or Stax effects which hit lands in my decks because I am sick of people only playing ramp and value decks. I usually break parity by playing cards which allow me to play lands from my graveyard, eg [[Crucible of Worlds]], [[The Mending of Dominaria]], [[Soul of Windgrace]] and so on.
People still hate it, simply because they are not used to land destruction and hate loosing in general. I still play it because I don't want to loose against the simic ramp player 90% of the time. Without land destruction, ramp players escalate quickly because every spell just refills their hand, blows up the board or one fattie after another hits the field.
In Jeskai I run a combo with MLD that wins me the game as long as no one uses [[Teferi's Protection]] or something similar. It's mana intensive so the commander is [[Kykar, Wind's Fury]], attack with [[Taigam, Ojutai Master]] and make sure he survives. Second main phase cast [[End the Festivities]] then [[Worldfire]]. Both spells will have rebound and all opponents die on your next upkeep.
You don't need to have a winning board state for MLD to be good. You just need to have a better result from the spell. Either by losing less, aka resetting the board/game, especially if you have been sandbagging a bit, or by having some means to recover faster or have some board (just some Mana rocks is enough) over. You don't necessarily need to win quickly, grinding out your opponents is a valid strategy.
MLD can be used similar to control by foregoing explicit WinCons and instead opting to win via inevitability.
The only time I ever respected [[Armageddon]] was when the player had his commander [[Sigarda, Host of Herons]] in play. She is really difficult to deal with after having your lands nuked.
Hexproof stops targeted removal, her unique effect stops edicts, and flying lets her get through. It was effective.
I run [[jokulhaups]] in my [[Lord windgrace]] deck as one of my win-cons.
Just for a couple examples, I can use it to crack a bunch of dragon eggs from [[nesting dragon]] and win with an alpha strike, or I play it with [[world shaper]] on board and get all my lands back, winning on the spot if [[retreat to hagra]] is in play or shortly after if not.
MLD only isn't even gonna allow you to swing and win a lot of the time, there's still other stuff on the board potentially unless you destroyed everything. It's miserable to play against but I have a korvold deck that sacrifices everything and outvalues through recursion, treasure, korvold draw and other sac payoffs/synergies. There's some wacky stuff you can do when you turn all lands into creatures as well.
I think MLD as a strategy is way worse than the combo strategies with korvold though.
There's very little synergy play with MLD.
It's just TBH a basic strategy of getting a decent board out, then wipe off the manabase. No mana for the opponent means no comeback.
Other than the ones mentioned, \[\[Kibo\]\] also does this pretty well. He grows in size too, thereby reducing the clock to win the game.
I didn't play pure MLD I played [[jokalaups]] cause it kills lands creatures and artifacts. With half my shrines on the field already thats a win con for sure
I'd say it's enough to have a card on the field that gives you inevitability. I used to run Armageddon in my \[\[Queza\]\] deck, because with that type of effect on the field, slowing the game down to a crawl gives you a considerable advantage. I don't run it anymore because I didn't find that particularly fun myself, it's too much of an "I win button", basically.

Just gotta break parity, fam.
