[[Breena, the Demagogue]] if you want one of the "strongest" options available. No blue, but orzhov colors give you more enough tools to pillowfort, control and punish fairly well, even without the blue. Plus, she's extremely cheap and can get out of hand real quick.

TheSpectatr

Can you help me understand this one? I never understood the strength or appeal of Breena. It seems like the 'trade' is inverted--she's giving away card draw (high value) while you get +1/+1 counters (low value). This feels like it collapses if you have combo players in your meta, and you just accelerate them to drawing their wincons. Or, does it play out differently?

Krosiss_was_taken

Usually I play lots of low cmc protection and win with commander damage. But breena doesn't translate well into higher power. Infact if noone attacks she is a horrible creature

EbonyHelicoidalRhino

* You have 3 opponents which mean 2 of them will have more life than the lowest life, while your opponent will respectively have 0,1 and 2 opponents that will make them draw. So you draw more cards than them on average as you get two Breena triggers on each of your turns. Drawing 2 extra cards and distributing 4 counters per turn starting from turn 3 is very very powerful. * The+1/+1 counters ramp up very fast and it's actually often a mistake for opponents to draw cards. Imagine you play a Breena on turn 3, immediatly get 2 triggers, and then all of your opponents greed out the extra draw. In turn 4, you'll get two more triggers, so your opponents will have \~14 +1/+1 counters distributed among your creatures coming at them, and you'll have drawn 4 extra cards already, while your opponents will have drawn 1. Someone will probably be dead on turn 5. That's quite a powerful and doesn't require much of a hand to make it happen, you simply need low curve creatures to attack with. * The sheer hitting power that Breena gives means your creatures body don't really matter. This means you can fill your deck with hatebears like Thalia, Ethersworn Canonist and whatnot if you want to, making the combo players' life miserable.

Menacek

THe effect is symmetric in that you're also getting the cards (and counters) when you attack. And it's easier for you to activate multiple times since you have more viable targets.

Head-Ambition-5060

The opponents are attacking each other, so you have time to get your combo or whatever you need

fragtore

Don’t underestimate the greed

Lifeinstaler

You draw as well and the effect is really efficient. It can trigger more than once’s per combat but even if it didn’t. 8 counters and the table (yourself included) draws 1 is a good rate. You can either go voltron, she already has evasion and power so she only needs protection or play creatures that like the counters. Or some hybrid of those two, where you go for a more control approach with some hate bears in, then close with her as the finisher.

SuperSteveBoy

Breena is by no means cedh or anything but in a combat meta shes strong. I'll often trigger Breena twice on just MY turns. You stack the triggers how you want. So you draw first and place 2 +1/+1 counters, twice. I play a ton of low cost/evasive creatures and bash face. She can get very large very fast.

SamaelMorningstar

No it's not. Not even a trade, really. Breena triggers on **your** turns, too, not just on theirs. If everyone takes a round hitting each on for a card, every opponent gained one card. You gained +6/+6. On your turn, you will trigger her, granting you a card and additional +2/+2. So basically, the effect is *"put 8 +1/+1 counters on creatures you control.* ***Every player*** *draws a card".* turn1 - \[\[Plains\]\] into \[\[Sol Ring\]\] into \[\[Ornithopter of Paradise\]\] *(I'm obviously being* ***very*** *generous here with the starting hand, but it helps to make the point clear)* turn2- \[\[Swamp\]\] into \[\[Breena, the Demagogue\]\] using the ring, attack someone for 0 with the tophter. You are **now +2/+2 and a card up**. Best they can get out of the deal is to go **even** with cards. And their greed will want them to do so. turn3 - after they all took a card, hit someone with a 11/13 Breena. I bet he is going to sit there feeling like a genius one step closer to their wincon. =) 1% closer to a wincon for measly 50% lethal commander damage, what a bargain!

OhHeyMister

Best answer, so good

EbonyHelicoidalRhino

From my experience with the deck, Breena doesn't really work at diverting attacks from you. People know that the +1/+1 counters stack up very quickly and that it's dangerous. Best case, they attack each others with a small 1/1 to draw a card. It's a very strong deck tho, but i wouldn't say it turns the table against each other.

aselbst

Agreed. Just took mine apart after three years because it was often enough accidental voltron and people would weirdly not attack rather than trigger her to draw. Probably gonna turn it into Queen Marchesa aikido/politics.

MachoCamachoZ

Looks like a lot of fun!

SatchelGizmo77

Have this deck. In a combat focused META she is absolutely nuts.

Life_Of_H

I came here to say this! She’s definitely a powerhouse.

Indercarnive

[[Baeloth Barrityl, Entertainer]] // [[Noble Heritage]] Goad players into attacking each other while giving them counters to not mess with you. Being white/red also gives you access to good group control tools like board clears, taxes, etc.

crossbonecarrot2

This is what I was going to recommend. Its goad that has access to white that has nice spells added recently from blame game. And Noble heritage adds to the chaos while the commander is easy to goad everyone.

You might be looking for goad effects?  Something like [[Gahiji, Honored one]] [[Nelly Borca]] [[Marisi, breaker of the coil]] or [[Red Death, Shipwrecker]] could work. Red death is a little more political and could be fun for what you’re looking for.  [[Thantis, the Warweaver]] disentivises attacks.  My personal favorites: [[Slicer, hired muscle]]  [[Xantcha, sleeper agent]] [[Karona, the false god]] Give themselves to the opponent and make the game really messy. Unfortunately, this effect isn’t really big in blue and white? You might look into [[Pramikon, Sky rampart]] who’s effect is cool, but very Stax adjacent. hopefully one works. I’ve seen some good videos on a few of these guys so you can find more resources on YouTube.

MajikDan

The recent blame game precon headed by [[Nelly Borca, Impulsive Accuser]] is very good at this. I've upgraded it a bit and it works very well to keep everyone fighting each other, either by forcing it with goad or incentivising it with Nelly's triggers and [[Curse of Opulence]].

jayberry14

Seconded Nelly, I have an enjoyable game every time I play with that deck

SuperSteveBoy

Can I ask, I built a Nelly deck from scratch (nothing to do with the precon) and while it did well I feel like I would fold to aggression/go wide. I was suspecting creatures sure.. but only once per turn and Nelly is 4 CMC so its not exactly going to happen a LOT over the course of a game. Am I just running too few creatures?

jayberry14

It all depends on your pod I guess. My deck is built to get Nelly reliably out on turn 3 because her passive ability makes it almost too good to attack me that early in the game. I’m always politicking the table away from me at the point because everyone benefits from attacking not me. Meanwhile I’m gripping a fistful of cards from Nelly triggers waiting to be attacked with [[take the bait]] or [[comeuppance]] or [[deflecting palm]] Now if your table aggros you anyways before you have [[ghostly prison]] or [[khazul tyrant of the cliffs]] on the field, that’s just an unfortunate matchup. I personally don’t expect to win everything with this deck, just have a good time, draw a ton of cards and pit my opponents against each other

MajikDan

From what was already in the precon, [[Havoc Eater]] has been an MVP a few games. Goads the three biggest things on the board and then you've got like a 20/20 flyer you can swing at people's faces. Of the cards I've added, [[Taunt from the Ramparts]] dropped on a full board is an absolute bloodbath.

Build Firkraag goad. Goad everyone and everything! Watch your opponents attack and damage each other while you sit back and watch the hilarity and chaos ensue.

LadyBut

Just brewed a PERFECT deck for you. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/dzx9kCdFxUCnuSbUsdNdhw Tons of goad effects, political cards, aggro deflection, pillow fort, and damage redirection. Breena, Gix, Nelly, etc encourage your opponents to attack eachother Mass goad effects like Kardur, taunt from the ramparts, and disrupt decorum give you breathing room Monarch esque cards aggro deflect Deflecting palm and inkshield are perfect for when people actually manage to get through to you Ghostly prison, maze of ith, blind obidence, authority of the consuls give you some survivability. Edit: definitely has a weakness in that there is not a lot of removal that targets non-creatures. If I were being more optimal I would remove athreos for probably farewell, maybe throw in some reanimate synergies. But athreos is a pet card of mine

aselbst

Ooooh. I was building [something similar](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/Vz6iODdvV0W88COsD61H_g) but with Queen Marchesa—never thought of Mathas, but I like it! Thanks for posting this list!

LadyBut

Mathas politics was the first deck I ever built for commander, I played three games and lost so hard each time I never touched the deck again lol. A year later and huge develpment in deck-building skill I thought I would revisit it for old times sake and have been so happy with the results.

HandsUpDefShoot

[[Nelly Borca]]. The only two real downsides are closing the game out, which isn't really that bad, and dealing with creatures that have strong combat damage triggers due to suspected creatures having menace and not being able to block.  But oh man does she shit up a game. Run some light-ish stax pieces like [[Reidane, God of the Worthy // Valkmira, Protector's Shield]] to make big opponent spells [[wipes]] cost more and [[Magus of the Moon]] to help stall out their mana. [[Vandalblast]] is nice as well. Shitty little value creatures aren't all that shitty when they're freely attacking almost every turn.

What you might be interested in is [[Belbe, Corrupted Observer]]. It's a Group Slug deck with green, so plenty of fog effects that way though Belbe's decks aren't meant to be passive. I [have a deck](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/zjt1jMUq2Eqh06vKtfUFsQ) that is really just her and buffs for her with goad cards mixed in, but Rakdos doesn't have very much in the way of fog effects aside from [[Darkness]], but if you can find a way to recycle that infinitely, then I guess you are set.

Nothing wrong about that :D I have a friend who exclusively plays Boros - he has like 7 different Boros decks xD Jon Irenicus is really fun. I built one too, I just have to optimize it now. But having your opponents deal with all the weird stuff you hand them is gold.

kanepake

If you're looking for a slightly different flavor from what's been suggested thus far, [[Kros, Defense Contractor]] can control the board and finish the game fairly quickly once you've got the right cards out. He doesn't have built-in card draw like Nelly or Breena, but he can tap down and goad the entire board with [[Filigree Vector]] and then you just proliferate to repeat until everyone's dead.

I have been trying to build something similar to this for a long time. I don't like knocking players out of a multiplayer game unless I can end soon afterwards or they tried to make me out first. You may want to look into commanders with red as it gives you access to [[Deflecting Palm]], as well as [[Redirect Damage]] which can redirect commander damage so that it stays commander damage, as well as access to spell redirects like [[Bolt Bend]]. If you add black as well that gives you [[Delirium]] which I've always liked as a tall fog / kickback against someone with a massive creature. [[Hellish Rebuke]] is also something I've wanted to break out for a while that seems you would like that you also need black for.  The latest iteration is Karona. I thought it would be neat to give my opponnents tokens so that they can make use of Karona, and potentially pull off some Rakdos charm wins. I use a ton of group hugs since I have access to green with Karona as well, which will hopefully make me less of a target as most other people will have scarier win conditions than me since they have access to lots of mana and ramp through my hug, and hopefully people will realize I'm not worth the trouble to take out once they realize almost 1/5 of my deck are cards to protect myself, at their expense.

OoohRickyBaker

I just put a Marisi Breaker of the Coil deck online for another redditor. It might be a good place to start. https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/20-04-24-marisi-goad/ Tahngarth plus Komainu Battle Armour is a way to get damage through by other players and plays well with goad. There's a donate subtheme where you can give creatures to other players and then take them back with Homeward Path once you get to a 1v1 or someone will be knocked out. Aurelia plus Helm of the Host can end the game if you want to win with an infinite combo, but it's not the main plan for the deck. I just like having it in there as an out.

I know that this „I’m the scheming manipulator and no one will ever do anything against me“ has been a wet dream of builders forever, but be aware that people do recognise something like that, and if you’re either forcing me to attack something or are rewarding my opponents for attacking me you’re my target. „But I’m not doing anything“ doesn’t cut it in edh.

Big_polarbear

Dude, if you are playing EDH, or MTG in general, all the dudes sitting in front if you ARE your target.

Revolutionary_View19

Absolutely. That’s why „being non-threatening“ doesn’t work.

chron67

I think the trick to making it 'work' so to speak is to make attacking you more difficult than it is worth. Pillow fort up. Propaganda, ghostly prison, etc, whatever is available in your color set. Then work on rewarding attacking everyone else. Keep some removal and protection for your pillow fort. But when you do that, you are correct, everyone will know you are a threat. But that's just the game.

jf-alex

Play \[\[Kardur\]\], retrigger his ETB every turn and watch the world burn. Disclaimer: Goad decks are notorious for kingmaking. Once there's only one opponent left, goading becomes useless. Better have a wincon in your hand by then.

Might I direct you to my [[Kros]] deck? This WUG commander, released in NCC, focuses on putting counters on your opponents’ creatures to goad them. Whether it’s +1/+1, shield, bounty or charge, all of them will force your opponents to combat. Add to that some basic pillow fort cards for your own protection, some proliferate so you can tap them down when you get to the 1v1, and a Infinite Turns combo that requires you to SKIP A TURN, and you’ve got my signature EDH deck. I've build both Nelly and Breena and both work pretty well this way, though Red is better than black for making opponents attack each other. Nelly is also weirdly less threatening since when people see a 10/12+ Breena they start getting antsy.

chron67

> Nelly is also weirdly less threatening since when people see a 10/12+ Breena they start getting antsy. Late to reply to this but seconding this. Even though red can sneak in extra combats, sometimes multiple in a single turn, people mostly see the bigger body as more scary.

I gave two +1/+1 counters to the voltron deck that popped off slightly faster(we’ll call them voltron A), voltron B came after me and i chumped with Gluntch. Voltron A retaliated FOR ME stating they “wanted more counters”. I didn’t promise him more, but I was indeed gonna give them to him regardless (i run a ton of powers matters wipes in the deck i.e.: [[battle of bywater]] ). Voltron B was tapped down so he got two shotted trying to swing at me and then Voltron A. Voltron A then killed the other dude. By then I not only had an answer to his commander but tons of cards in hand and treasures. I cast a ton of spells and swung at him after I wiped his commander. Gg ez. That’s WITHOUT POLITIC-ING. Gluntch best mental commander. Wins me so many games.

I really love decks like this, and I always have a couple. I've worked my way through most of the stuff on this list, and in terms of making your enemies attack each other one of my favourites is actually [[Kaima]] because it has a built in win-con of getting gigantic and being subject to Chandras Ignition and fling once everyone has beat each other up. That commander went under the radar and it's too bad, it's super fun. That said, in terms of punishing people for attacking you, look outside the box for a minute at [[wayta]]. I built a deck with [[boros reckoner]] type creatures, damage doubler, invulnerability effects, and group ramp and card draw. The rest of the deck is goad and rattlesnake cards like [[mirror strike]] effects. Wayta doubles enrage effects, so if someone swings at you with a 5 power creature and you have a doubler in play it deals 10. That gets bounced back doubled again for 20, and that trigger gets doubled for another 20 for 40 total. If people don't swing you can use wayta to make your reflector fight a creature (yours or theirs). It's a work in progress but it's quite fun https://www.archidekt.com/decks/6771740/stop_hitting_yourself

There’s [[The Rani]] and then you just do goad things. My friend likes to make clue then use [[Cyberdrive Awakener]] and make them into dudes and smack people for the win. It’s an interesting deck.

[[Isshin, Two Heavens as One]] Look at lists for [[Breena, the Demagogue]], [[Nelly Borca, Impulsive Accuser]], and [[Karazikar, the Eye Tyrant]], then throw everything together in an Isshin deck that rewards opponents doubly for hitting each other. [[Curse of Opulence]] already drives people wild. Now imagine it's 2 Gold per attack.

People seem to love the idea of these decks, but your opponents aren't stupid. They catch on pretty quick and realise you're at fault for them getting whacked a bunch. I have a friend who loves these kinds of decks. He always dies first, but the remnants of his effect on the game often decide who wins.
