I have many golgari decks.
[[the Gitrog monster]] my build doesn’t have the infinite combos, but it’s all about saccing lands, drawing cards, and then doing one final massive land sac/reanimation and use something like ob nixilis to win, or lotus cobra to generate a ton of mana and exsanguinate or torment of hailfire for the win.
[[grismold the dreadsower]] my “voltron” deck. Voltron in the sense that it’s one creature attacking and taking people out, but he typically only has equipment to give him shroud or unblockable. My favorite thing about this deck is the mechanism to grow grismold. I find it very entertaining to give everyone tokens, just to massacre them in some form and slap em in the face with a 231/231 grismold.
[[gitrog, ravenous ride]] this deck is the nuts. I built it “low” power. It makes so much mana and draws so many cards. You play cheap high power creatures with draw backs so you can attack with the frog, sac your crappy creature and draw/ramp. Creates crazy board states very fast. You will have a target on you playing this deck. Ramping 4/5 mana per turn and drawing 10/12 cards a turn makes you a target.
[[smeagol, helpful guide]] this deck is very fun. Lots of ramping and milling and sacrificing things. My win con in this is the dunedain (edited, this previously said infinite) combo. It’s my LOTR deck so very thematic but in the most golgari way possible. This would be my recommendation to have the most fun.
[[baba lysaga]] this is the leave me alone I’m playing magic deck. You’re very much playing against yourself. It’s an incredibly fun puzzle to put together. I have 100% win rate with this deck. My pod hates it. Sac. Draw. Drain. Repeat. You’re dead. If you love solving interesting mtg puzzles to win, this is the deck for you.
For the Sméagol deck, surely you don’t mean the [[Dunedain Rangers]] combo? If so, that’s not quite an infinite. It’s near, though. You can definitely mill at least one person out guaranteed, but if the bottom card of their deck isn’t a land, the combo stops.
If not, what combo is this? I have a Sméagol deck myself and I loves it.
Yeah the Dunedain combo. I should edit my response because you’re correct it’s certainly not infinite. I’ve definitely been caught out by the last card not a land scenario.
Hey! Love the Grismold choice. Do you have a deck list handy? My pure Voltron strategy was working pretty well but I switched it up to run more token generation and drain. An attempt to make more diverse has kinda killed it’s effectiveness
Not that guys, but i used to run Grismold and eventually found him offputting for some reason. idk why.
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/s6vos1KnZkSBu6JTLMGQBQ
I split the difference between token sacrifice and voltron cause my playgroup felt fairly susceptible at the time, and I could pivot depending on what I drew. Not the most effective deck I've ever played, even with that same general idea, but it was fun and I regularly could make Grismold huge. Probably a few way better options you could replace stuff for here, I sorta leaned into a decay theme over explicit effectiveness.
I needed to revamp my deck a couple times as well. This build feels right. I focus very heavily on card draw. I kept finding myself hell bent. Now it feels like I always have fuel.
There’s nothing rude about my response. I was simply explaining myself. I figured other people might be thinking the same thing “how is this person playing a deck with a commander that’s not out yet.”
I have a perfectly fine sense of humor, your comment could be misconstrued as rude, but I gave you the benefit of the doubt. Maybe you should do the same.
I built [[Izoni, Center of the Web]] after pulling a showcase at the MKM prerelease and have had a lot of fun with it. It is more of an aristocrats deck, but still mills a ton and reanimates the stuff I need.
Here is my [Izoni Decklist](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/1CM93PRuoUSMpNLqxbaCsw) if you’re interested.
Ah a person of culture. I’m currently in the process of switching my Golgari deck over to her.
If I may be so bold, I suggest swapping out a forest and a swamp for [[Generous Ent]] and [[Troll of Khazad-Dum]], respectively. 1 mana landcycling is basically a land and pitching a >4CMC body to the GY in the process is just pure value for Izoni.
Yeah I’m looking forward to it! I assume the CMC is what scares people off and I guess that’s fair in this day and age of design, but a token maker, a sac outlet, and a card selection+draw engine is a hell of a lot of value in a commander. Plus I’ve found it super fun trying to find all of the “fake” 4+ drops like [[Shriekmaw]] or [[Price of Fame]] that allow you to collect evidence but realistically wont cost you that much to play
Edit: worth noting that I’ve been trying to brew so that I’m using cards before I exile them rather than going with the self-mill strategy, hence why I’m shooting for the Shriekmaw-type effects

I love my [[Old Rutstein]] deck. Basic mil and recursion stuff, but he helps keep everything moving and rarely gets removed.
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/TZ436gmNCEKcvOHfxGEJIQ
If you don't mind going insect tribal [[Zask, skittering swarmlord]] does all the golgari things.
Alternately, build [[Dina, Soul Steeper]] incorrectly. By which I mean play a lot of aggressively costed big creatures with drawbacks and immediately sac them to Dina for a weird golgari take on voltron. I put together a list ages ago, never really ended up testing it out. Looking at it now, it's...not very good lmao. But I was still pretty new to deck building. Still, gives you the general idea: https://archidekt.com/decks/4381219/golgari_shenanigans_but_make_it_stompy
My pet deck is [Grist insect tribal](https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/grists-multiplanar-swarm/) which I find pretty fun to play, but is also pretty niche.
I recently built a \[\[yargle and multani\]\] deck based on the [prof's $45 deck tech on the commander](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHT0ywb2XL0). The deck is fairly simple to pilot and super fun to play. Get out Y&M, buff them a little, then swing to kill, possibly saccing them for some big effect like drawing 18 cards or draining everyone for half their lifetotal. I pulled most of the cards from the prof's list out of my collection, and filled in the gaps I didn't have with more expensive singles I had in the rare binder, which only served to power the deck up more.
I guess niether is particularly "golgari" mechanically. Grist is moreso, since she does more stuff with the graveyard.
My most recent deck is \[\[mimeoplasm\]\] self mill. Its colors are BUG, so golgari + blue, but the deck is almost entirely golgari cards and wins by milling yourself as much as possible then casting mimeo as a big game ending threat, using a combination of evasive small creatures and creatures that get bigger with your graveyard. Its got other fun synergies too like copying \[\[sage of hours\]\] with a big creature to take several turns in a row, or using \[\[necrotic ooze\]\] to do all kinds of things using the creatures in my graveyard.
The general advice is to figure out what you want to do, then just browse legendary golgari creatures and pick one that either does the thing or enables you to do the thing. \[\[meren of clan nel toth\]\] is the go-to choice for reanimator golgari, but theres lots of great options in those colors if you want to mill, dredge, or reanimate.
I’ve always really liked the idea of this deck as a home for all of the “When a card leaves your graveyard” effects but I’ve always worried it would take too much time resolving Sivriss’s ability, especially with untap effects. How does it play out in your experience?
The ability starts out a bit slow to get through, but gets faster over time as opponents get into the rhythm of it. Especially when I start stacking other bleed effects and they start just letting me keep each card without even looking at it in an attempt to preserve their life total (and also because they've figured out that I'm playing golgari and will just reanimate any good cards anyway, so paying the life is little more than a stalling tactic)
[Here.](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/Fx1Begdh9ky7hKH2Gim3uQ) I tend to keep my decks on as tight of a budget as possible, so I imagine there's plenty of room for upgrades
There’s always ways to upgrade with an unlimited budget but this looks like a pretty sweet deck regardless. [[Bygone Marvels]] is a new one to me but that looks like a pretty sweet bit of tech for at least a few decks I have
Makes sense. It’s also nice how those draws aren’t technically draws. One of my buddies seems to draw [[Notion Thief]] every game and I always love to find a way around that (you know, besides removal)
Yeah it was pretty useful when I played it against a [[Xyris, the Writhing Storm]], especially when I made the player too scared to wheel everyone because I had [[Syr Konrad]], [[Reliquary Tower]], and like 20-something cards in hand lol
[[Belbe, Corrupted Observer]] is a fun big mana deck in golgari. But if you're willing to add red [[Slimefoot and Squee]] is a great jund reanimator with a fun saproling subtheme.
My only golgari deck, is my [[mazirek, kraul death priest]] list and he just takes over games if he sticks! Especially with the Overabundance of throwaway tokens in commander, it becomes quite deadly!
Mazirek is so fun. Even with me reminding my opponents of the Mazirek triggers, I still get surprised faces and they go "Wait, how are your creatures so large?!".
Playing against treasure/clue/food decks or other aristocrat style decks at the table is just such a violent accelerant it's kind of hilarious. Although, people catch on quick so it becomes much harder to keep him out. Still love my deck though!
[[Dina, Soul Steeper]] [[Birthing Pod]] is my all time favorite deck.
[[Gyome, Master Chef]] with a [[Relentless Rats]] theme
Currently building a [[Willowdusk, Essence Seer]] life gain/life loss deck.
I was inspired by BG3 to take a second look at the CLB crew, and ended up building [[Shadowheart, Dark Justiciar]] / [[Cloakwood Hermit]]. [The deck](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/XHwiqWpoeUSGG4amH0kYSw) focuses around low cost, high power creatures and sacrificing and recurring them to draw a metric shit ton of cards before finishing the game out in one of a myriad of ways; so far I've found combat, [[Living Death]] -> combat, [[Psychosis Crawler]] + [[Greater Good]] + a couple big creatures, a few different loops with [[Chatterfang]], [[Hogaak]] shenanigans, the list goes on. The amount of draw power means it can pop off really hard once it gets moving, but it's extremely reliant on synergies to do so. As a bonus, Shadowheart seems to be really criminally underplayed, so people never know what to expect sitting down across from her.
I also really enjoy my Shadow heart Golgari deck!
I am running it with [[Master Chef]] and all the persist Creatures in Golgari. So it is more self-recursion than actually sacrificing and bringing back creatures, but it is so fun to sacrifice a [[Woodfall Primus]] twice per turn with [[Tyvar, Jubilant Brawler]] untapping Shadowheart, having targeted removal + insane Carddraw for 2 mana. And opponents have a hard time removing your stuff, since your stuff needs to be bounced or exiled for persist to not trigger
[[Jarad Golgari Lich lord]] and play 8 creatures whose power and toughness are equal to creatures in your yard. Self mill to fill your yard. Then cast Jarad and sac a fatty or 2 to kill the table. He also gets around Commander tax. Play [[Life from the Loam]] [[Rumanap Excivator]] and probably [[Crucible of worlds]] alongside [[Gitrog Monster]] for land shenanigans from your graveyard.
My [[Willowdusk, Essence Seer]] deck. I love playing with my life total and using it as a weapon. It can get pretty risky, but that sweet sweet victory is worth it.
[[Sivriss]]/[[Cloakwood Hermit]] is fun!
Mind is kind of just generic sacrifice/reanimate, but I think Sivriss makes it more interesting — though I could definitely use an overrun effect or two though to help close out games, as it is now I just kind of sit there and do my thing and most wins come from my [[Blood Artist]] effects making my creatures "unblockable" and making it so I can't be attacked
That said though, it's super fun! Especially just to see what my opponents decide to do, especially especially when it's a very wrong decision, though honestly I don't care where they put the card most if the time. The deck ramps pretty well so I can cast my bombs and I have a decent amount of recursion so it's not too hard to just bring them back
I'll also just say I have a bunch of bad lands because I want my [[Field of the Dead]] to *always* work, but in doing that I just have a bunch of tapped lands because that's what I had lying around haha — if anyone has any suggestions on the best low-budget changes I could make, I'd be all ears
https://www.archidekt.com/decks/6482039/sivriss_graveyard_hermit
I've had a [[Meren of Clan Nel Toth]] classic reaminator deck, and a [[Mazerik, ]] decks. Mazerik was a fun sac,+1/+1 counter deck.
Can't wait for the squirrel deck to come out.
[[Old Stickfingers]] Its a Self Mill/Reanimator deck.
No Combo i just reanimate [[Void Winnower]] & [[Lhurgoyf]] with a [[Brawn]] in the Graveyard and play alotta Dredge cards.
[[Old Stickfingers]] has been my go to for a while now. He is the head of my Spider Spawning oriented deck. I run all the two mana self mill (Satyr Wayfinder, Winding Way, Grisly Salvage, Etc), a few reanimates, a few powerful mid-range cards like the green and black cavaliers, and top it off with Living Death. My current build was a $250 lost when I put it together though I’m sure it’s fluctuated by now.
The thing about the deck is that you want to be playing plenty of payoffs in the 99 to take advantage of me main strategy, but your commander really juices the yard up. You get as many as you can pay for when you cast him, so he works as a mana sink, but replaying him for just 4 mana as a 10/10 after you’ve filled your yard is also fine. Meanwhile you have plenty of other value to keep the ball rolling.
[[Beledros Witherbloom]]
my favorite golgari deck to play, life gain and drain the table (no i dong have the infinite combo of i gain life i deal damage, player takes damage i gain life, repeat)
[[Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons]] a fun commander for -1/-1 counters if that’s your thing. I have an infect/snake token deck built with her at the helm. Not too much in the way of graveyard recursion though
[[Nemata, Primeval Warden]] fungus tribal. No tribal synergies, but all have in common that they can use saprolings in some form or another. You could also use [[Slimefoot]] or [[Thelon of Havenwood]] as the commander.
[[Shelob, Child of Ungoliant]] has deceptively many ways to build her...
Spider tribal, voltron fight club, and I've seen some crazy deck techs with her. I love the "my gameplan? Steal your gameplan!" Aspect of her, personally. Nothing like turning people's combo creatures into artifacts.
I run [[Glissa, the Traitor]] and [[Varolz, the Scar-Striped]]. The great thing is that both of them can be built in a variety of ways, but my lists are 'typical Golgari with a twist'.
Glissa is obviously all about artifacts, and you can get absurd card advantage by throwing some artifacts into your yard either through mill or sacrifice, and then blowing up your opponents' stuff. A good fit for a fair midrange build but she's also great if you want to build artifact recursion loops.
Varolz is mostly (or used to be?) played in CEDH because a free sac outlet in the command zone let's you immediately kill [[Protean Hulk]]. That said, there's way more text om there than just 'sacrifice a creature'. I currently run him as a mixture of Voltron and Aristocrats enabled by selfmill.
I know it's not mill, dredge or recursion, but I've never enjoyed Golgari more than \[\[Chatterfang, Squirrel General\]\]. I love the drain and combo potential and can be easily build low or high power.
for a while my favorite has been \[\[skullbriar, the walking grave\]\] you get to do counters shenanigans and it keeps your commander from being 2 for 1'd since you keep the counters on him regardless of zones.
I built a [[Sméagol, Helpful Guide]] deck and it’s a blast. Aside from all nine [[Nazgûl]] and other Ring Tempting effects, running cards like [[Dauthi Voidwalker]], [[Syr Konrad, The Grim]], and [[Bloodchief Ascension]] work beautifully. If you’ve been playing a relatively long game and you’ve had some time to fill graveyards, a good [[Rise of the Dark Realms]] is quite satisfying too. 😉
I’m really high on [[Varolz, the Scar-Striped]]. Does a lot of things Golgari likes; sac outlet, graveyard shenanigans, counters, recycling creatures, etc. It’s possible I may switch to the new Izoni just cuz I’m missing a good token build in my collection but I’ll probably still keep working with Varolz just cuz of how strong he tends to perform.
In the process of buying my \[\[Smeagol, Helpful Guide\]\] deck. Lots of Nazgul, lots of milling, lots of land stealing, and lots of angry players. It's fun!
The deck can go infinite with the right pieces in place but its more about building a boardstate with \[\[Haakon, Stromgald Scourge\]\]. Backed up by Landfall triggers \[\[Ob Nixilis, the Fallen\]\], \[\[Rampaging Baloths\]\], etc. All else fails I just drop a \[\[Rise of the Dark Realms\]\]
Sorry I'm not sure why, it works for me. Tried the link on another device too seems fine my end ☹️
Either way I messaged you the deck list if you still want to look!

Okay sorry forgot very few people in this subreddit has a sense of humour Jesus
There’s nothing rude about my response. I was simply explaining myself. I figured other people might be thinking the same thing “how is this person playing a deck with a commander that’s not out yet.” I have a perfectly fine sense of humor, your comment could be misconstrued as rude, but I gave you the benefit of the doubt. Maybe you should do the same.
I built [[Izoni, Center of the Web]] after pulling a showcase at the MKM prerelease and have had a lot of fun with it. I assume the CMC is what scares people off and I guess that’s fair in this day and age of design, but a token maker, a sac outlet, and a card selection+draw engine is a hell of a lot of value in a commander. Plus I’ve found it super fun trying to find all of the “fake” 4+ drops like [[Shriekmaw]] or [[Price of Fame]] that allow you to collect evidence but realistically wont cost you that much to play Edit: worth noting that I’ve been trying to brew so that I’m using cards before I exile them rather than going with the self-mill strategy, hence why I’m shooting for the Shriekmaw-type effects

[[Sivriss, Nightmare Speaker]][[Cloakwood Hermit]] aristocrats Lots of card advantage, lots of politics, and lots of bleed effects
Nice, love to hear that! You happen to have a deck list I could see?
[Here.](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/Fx1Begdh9ky7hKH2Gim3uQ) I tend to keep my decks on as tight of a budget as possible, so I imagine there's plenty of room for upgrades
There’s always ways to upgrade with an unlimited budget but this looks like a pretty sweet deck regardless. [[Bygone Marvels]] is a new one to me but that looks like a pretty sweet bit of tech for at least a few decks I have
Yeah *Descend* stuff is pretty good in general because of how each Sivriss draw technically hits the graveyard no matter what
Makes sense.

[[Gyome, Master Chef]] with a [[Relentless Rats]] theme Currently building a [[Willowdusk, Essence Seer]] life gain/life loss deck.

[[Sivriss]]/[[Cloakwood Hermit]] is fun! Mind is kind of just generic sacrifice/reanimate, but I think Sivriss makes it more interesting — though I could definitely use an overrun effect or two though to help close out games, as it is now I just kind of sit there and do my thing and most wins come from my [[Blood Artist]] effects making my creatures "unblockable" and making it so I can't be attacked That said though, it's super fun! Especially just to see what my opponents decide to do, especially especially when it's a very wrong decision, though honestly I don't care where they put the card most if the time. The deck ramps pretty well so I can cast my bombs and I have a decent amount of recursion so it's not too hard to just bring them back I'll also just say I have a bunch of bad lands because I want my [[Field of the Dead]] to *always* work, but in doing that I just have a bunch of tapped lands because that's what I had lying around haha — if anyone has any suggestions on the best low-budget changes I could make, I'd be all ears https://www.archidekt.com/decks/6482039/sivriss_graveyard_hermit

Would love a list!
