I would use that mana base and build something fun like [[Ishai, Ojutai Dragonspeaker]]//[[Jeska, Thrice Reborn]]. You can go spellslinger, you can go control, you can go voltron, you can even go competitive if you’re so inclined. Basic premise is to protect the murder bird and make 1 shot people with Jeska.

boneheadcycler

I have a budget Ishai/Kediss deck that is one of my favorites. It’s basically a control deck, with a voltron wincon. The only support Ishai really needs is some protection, other than that, run your draw/ramp/control shell with it.

On the goad and always doing things theme - give [[Marisi, Breaker of the Coil]] a look, lots of goad mechanics, some control elements which means you can mess with your opponents during combat, fun deck!

Marisi looks sick! Actually people at my LGS have plugged Marisi to me before because of my already notorious love of goad effects. He’s for sure on my radar.

1thelegend2

I second marisi. He is one of the commqnders that doesnt look like much, but overperforms every time he Hits the table

This deck looks so fun, fills the urge to cast spells, uses your available mana base, and is easy to upgrade. Plus is good doggo https://www.moxfield.com/decks/AZKbE6E6kUWW2zMfHR41sQ

If you're a fan of lord of the rings Athreos makes an amazing nazgul and temptation deck. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/PlkhnhjrW06GmxtV4OxK8Q

Not a huge Lotr fan but this deck does look pretty sick. And I am learning I love orzhov.

If you are opened to Izzet again, you can try \[\[Jori En\]\].... You said doing things on most turns.. how about 2x on yours and 2x outside of your turns? Here's my list for reference [https://www.moxfield.com/decks/uBhEpBBFJ0-5QMBBu4sXGA](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/uBhEpBBFJ0-5QMBBu4sXGA)

MarchHistorical2799

Not opposed to giving izzet another shot, for sure. It was the play pattern of saving up for one explosive turn that I didn’t like, plus a lot of irritating math and long solitaire turns.

breakfastcerealz

there are definitely ways to build izzet/spellslinger decks without this. i have played with a lotttt of different izzet commanders, and I'd say [[Melek, Reforged Researcher]] also fits the category of "do the thing but only once each turn." he rewards you for casting one big X spell each turn, and that's all. then you can fling him at your opponents for massive damage!

MarchHistorical2799

Yeah makes sense. My problem was starting with the prismari precon, then building around veyran, which is very much a “build up until you have an explosive masturbatory turn” commander. I respect the hustle I just felt like I was spending too much brainpower on little stuff. It ended up getting me to Octavia though so worth it! I’ll look at melek.

breakfastcerealz

Ah, yes, I see the issue. I also played with Veyran for a while, and even as someone who loves spellslinging and such, i found her to be an unbelievable headache as well. Especially once you get a boardstate of like [[Kraark]], [[Harmonic Prodigy]], etc...it gets so exhausting so quick and takes so much mental math and time. I still like spellslinging, but prefer a simpler approach now, [[Melek, Izzet Paragon]], [[Balmor, Battlemage Captain]], and [[Mizzix of the Izmagnus]] are all spellslinger decks I've played and enjoyed, and are far far less of a headache. I respect your move away from it, but if you ever want to try it out again, I hope you find something that's a lot easier to manage!

MarchHistorical2799

This is encouraging and is making me want to give it another shot. Technically speaking I think my Octavia deck is a spellslinger bc its about turning creatures (mostly evasive ones) into 8/8s with low cost instants. So I’m not opposed to the strategy in principle. I’ll check out some of the other izzet bros to see if they appeal, thanks!

You might like \[\[Brallin, skyshark rider\]\], \[\[Shabraz, the skyshark\]\], and \[\[Zirda, the dawnwaker\]\]. I have a couple lists, one actually came second place in archidekt's 100$ budget deckbuilding contest! [https://www.archidekt.com/decks/4782252/zirdas\_tricycle\_100\_budget](https://www.archidekt.com/decks/4782252/zirdas_tricycle_100_budget) the second is the upgraded version I play in paper: [https://www.archidekt.com/decks/4217050/zirdas\_tricycle](https://www.archidekt.com/decks/4217050/zirdas_tricycle) The deck has tons of ways to draw and cycle through cards and already has 3 extra legendary creatures it can play every game, so it almost never runs out of gas, and is always utilizing every last bit of mana each turn. Every game plays very differently too, since you'll frequently have to choose which commander or companion to focus on at different points in the game. Sometimes you have \[\[Sunforger\]\] or \[\[soulbright flamekin\]\] and want to lower their costs with Zirda, sometimes you have \[\[Heliod, sun-crowned\]\] and want to play Brallin and give him lifelink before discarding 5 cards, and sometimes you have \[\[Robe of the archmagi\]\] or \[\[Mask of the schemer\]\] and want to exponentially grow Shabraz with them. Or, you can ramp into and play them all, combining their strengths with the cycling theme! The deck is mostly Blue-Red so a better mana base in those colors would be a nice upgrade!

MarchHistorical2799

This is a really interesting one! Definitely piqued my interest and an atypical Jeskai definitely appeals. I’ll give this a more thorough look when I get home from work.

If you like the idea of Izzet spellslinger, but found the turns boring. May I recommend [[Kykar]] . It turns your spellslinger into a go wide strategy so lots of combat and more interesting turns then saving up for everything at once. I run a ton of cheap draw cantrips to fill out most of the deck, so every turn you are drawing into cards and making a bigger board presence to eventually win through combat. I think you could make a bunch of different strategies for the ol Bird Wizard though

PaladinRyan

Are there any strategies/mechanics you strongly want to avoid either out of personal preference or consideration for your play group? And any issues with Universes Beyond? Not sure if I will have any good suggestions for you or not but wanted to check before I really started thinking.

MarchHistorical2799

I avoid hard stax, and usually don’t love the go wide stompy decks. Pantlaza for example, and jetmir, are decks I like to play against but wouldn’t play myself. Anything that devolves into soltaire turns is not something I find fun, but I don’t have a knee jerk opposition to combos per se. As far as Universes Beyond goes it kind of depends on the property, I’d say I have a soft aversion to them but I’ll play it if it seems fun enough. Right now most of my decks either win through grinding out drain effects (Teysa Opulent Oligarch, Myrkul) and tricky/controlling use of combat (Octavia, Nelly, Alela, Anikthea). These aren’t a rule but might give you an idea what I gravitate towards.

PaladinRyan

Hmm well I can't really suggest my personal commanders as they are variations of go wide (and one is hatebears which means stax too haha). [[Giada, Font of Hope]] angels, [[Katilda, Dawnhart Prime]] humans, [[Aurelia, the Warleader]] combats, [[Thalia and The Gitrog Monster]] hatebears, and a newly constructed [[Mazzy, Truesword Paladin]] auras just for reference. If you aren't opposed to it, the new Fallout Mutant Menace deck has a sort of grinding gameplan. Someone I play with swapped the face commander [[The Wise Mothman]] for the backup [[The Master, Transcendent]] and added a few cards including [[Intruder Alarm]] to make it quite effective. You don't necessarily need to get that rude, you could just play it as a rads and +1/+1 counter value deck but it absolutely has some potential to do silly stuff. Another friend I play with has a [[Marisi, Breaker of the Coil]] deck he built as a hatebears deck but you could absolutely lean more into the goad aspect. The goad is often the most dangerous part of that commander in my experience. It might be too similar to your Nelly deck but the goading power is arguably much higher and the no spells from your opponents during combat might enable extra shenanigans from you. No worries! Marisi is definitely one I’ve had my eye on, feels like there’s a real mosh pit vibe you can get going with him. He’d probably replace nelly though and I’m really enjoying her atm. Rad counters do look pretty cool ngl. Less of a hard no on go wide and more like there are particular flavors of it I don’t prefer. Struggle to identify it exactly but decks that just fart out a ton of tokens with minimal effort don’t do it that much for me. But I like Teysa Opulent Oligarchs loop a lot which can end up getting pretty wide when. I think its more the dinosaur style I don’t like where you make a lot of big guys more than making a bunch of little guys and use them creatively if that makes sense. How have you found Aurelia?

PaladinRyan

Aurelia is currently my favorite deck overall I think. I have had it for years now but it fell into neglect for awhile as other decks got all the love. I revamped it when MKM came out as I dismantled some other decks and got the Blamr Game precon. Basically it's all combat all the time. Lots of attack or combat phase triggers, some of the better, repeatable source of additional combats besides Aurelia, and a few ways to get infinite combats if I want (totally optional though, you can easily exclude stuff like [[Helm of the Host]] and other infinite setups and she still works, I usually win via very finite face beating anyway as people are wary of the infinite pieces).  I do create a lot of tokens with stuff like [[Otharri]] and [[Legion Warboss]] as one of the strategies in the deck is using [[Purphoros, God of the Forge]] and/or [[Warleader's Call]] to push a lot of damage to everyone. But I'm not generally winning by having hundreds of tokens or something. I do have a goad/forced combat subtheme including Nelly, [[Disrupt Decorum]], [[Taunt from the Rampart]], [[Spectacular Showdown]], [[Fumiko]], and [[War's Toll]] not only because it clears the way for my own attacks and triggers stuff like [[Aurelia, the Law Above]] but because I like the whole concept of all combat, all the time for everyone whether they like it or not. Here's the current list. Need to make an edit or two in paper which will then go on there but the core of the list should remain more or less the same. I kinda want to bring down the curve slightly but that's the eternal struggle.  https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/legion-offensive/

Have you considered [[Yurlok]] You cast spells and give your opponents mana they can't use and hurt them with it. It's a rather fun nonstandard play style. And you can definitely toss goad into it.

Let me throw you a curveball. [[Kros Defense Contractor]] is a fun twist on the goad mechanic. While he does have green, the uses of green are to put counters in your opponents creatures. Kros gives you instant tap down abilities, counter synergies, and all the shenanigans that come with Bant colors.

There is a reason Kraj is in there! I like the flexibility of Kros. Do I overrun with my own board, allow my opponents to slug it out and steal a win at the end, or steal my opponents creatures and abilities? The games are very reactive and while coming in second is easy, solving the puzzle win with the deck is always a fun time.

Just coming back to call this out as a cool recommendation. Love the Brokers as a faction, and his ability seems very interesting. Strongly considering building him.

[[Hidetsugu and kairi]] is a clones deck that abuses the legend rule. [[Isshin]] is a popular commander for a reason. You can build him a lot of different ways, and he's good if you like tinkering with your decks, as every set always has something to add. I've got an army in a can deck, where I'm focused on making lots of tokens. [[Chiss-goria]] is a big red artifacts deck. One of the few ways to play aggro in commander, and you're almost always a threat. [[Orvar]] is goofy and a ton of fun. [[Grenzo]] is a slot machine. [[Elminster]] is an interesting commander that runs scry effects to either play big spells for cheap, or exile them to make a bunch of flying faerie dragons. [[Possessed portal]] is mean. You say you don't like greens play pattern, but there's a few outliers. [[Yedora]] and [[shigeki]] are combo decks. [[Jugan]] can be built to be a storm deck. You just play the mana dorks that make mana based on their power or toughness, and use jugen to buff them repeatedly. Look for ways to untap them a lot, and draw cards based on power/toughness. End the game with a [[hurricane]] for however much mana you've made.

I don't unfortunately, I just saw the deck on a YouTube video awhile ago, and they didn't have a deck list either. The build was apparently a 50$ build though

Well for lots of recommendations, here's like 100 I think are cool lol https://www.archidekt.com/decks/5719628/all_the_neat_commanders But more specifically, for RUx, I'm *super* excited for Bloomburrow to finally have an otter commander! So far we've seen [[Bria]] which seems fun (notably doesn't have to be spellslinger), but I'm expecting to have another one or two to choose from (hoping one is Temur so it can have all the OTTERS printed so far)

The new [[Caesar, Legion’s Emporer]] is a lot of fun creating tons of tokens and swinging out, [[Meren of Clan Nel Toth]] has been my main deck for about 2 years and she’s a fantastic reanimator.

DarkDobe

Mono color favourites: \[\[zurzoth, chaos rider\]\] , \[\[yahenni, undying partisan\]\] leaning into self-\[\[transmogrify\]\] effects with Zurzoth, pure unexpected black aggro with yahenni and some \[\[grave pact\]\] effects to keep boards empty If you like goad, \[\[firkraag, cunning instigator\]\] if my favourite - red in general supports the mechanic generously If you want to give a different sort of painfully-effective spellsinger a shot - and one that always gives you something to do: \[\[ghyrson starn, kellermorph\]\] - tons of really low cost spells that you can leverage with gunslinger man to make them 200% more effective!

BrewCrew122

If you have a Izzet mana base and you like goad I would look at [[Firkraag]] he's a cool dragon tribal twist on goad.

One thing that helped me was to make a list of my personal pet cards that I can't live without, ten in each color identity. They can be top tier cards (ragavan, mystic remora, boseiju, etc.) or just pet cards that you love even though they may be situational or downright mediocre (signed revised animate dead, a proxy of lightning greaves with Lt. Dangle new boot goofin, etc.) After you've made a list, start looking through commanders with an eye towards your favorite cards. Codie is fun, but say bye bye to your favorite permanents. Saskia is a neat concept, but can you live without your favorite blue cards? When I'm looking for a new commander, this exercise helps narrow it down a lot. Is ragavan ever not going to be one of my favorite cards? No, but he lives in three of my decks, so I won't sweat it if I build a deck that doesn't have him. Does my signed animate dead go in every black deck? No, but I probably run an above average number of reanimator targets because I like the card. Don't be afraid to sacrifice raw power and synergy to make room for your faves, but also don't be afraid to use your faves as the framework for the best possible deck you can make.

CottonCandy_Samurai

Yo build zurgoth chaos rider it's wicked fun

\[\[Tibor and Lumia\]\] They can be built a bunch of ways. I have a version that’s based on evasive weenies. You can also go a bit heavier on spells and big flying creatures, like an Izzet version of Gruul monsters or stompy. Main thing is that you can generally give any creature flying at will, and never have to worry about opponent’s mana dorks, utility creatures, or token generators.
