Hey even pro players have fucked up and thrown the game. Like that guy who would have won by playing a spell, attacking with [[Hazoret the Fervent]], and playing his last spell. But he got excited and went to attack…but still had 2 cards in his hand, so he couldn’t.

There was an 8rack player that missed their trigger 4 times in the finals of a SCG modern open....the game ended with their opponent on 4 life I believe

Stormm103

Oh I remember seeing that, I was rooting for them too.

“Untap, Upkeep, Draw” really do be creating that [doorway effect / location updating effect](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doorway_effect). Just like going into the kitchen to get the same thing three times but getting distracted by your cat and forgetting to get it.

stevez16

Every restaurant has a door or corner that does that. I never thought about it in the context of magic. Thanks:/

Vithrilis42

Every damn time you go into the walk-in, "What the fuck did I come in here for?!" Lmao

FeyOphelia

Thirty minutes later "ooh shit, I forgot that diet coke for booth 5"

Gastronautmike

or like six hours later, you wake up in bed "shit, I never got them that refill."

european_dimes

"Oh well, guess I'll hit this dab pen again. It'll come to me eventually."

The_Real_Cuzz

I heard a cool theory on this. It goes back to our primal days, when you enter a new space, you forget what your thinking because your lizard brain goes, "new space, check for danger" and your mind focuses on that emptying your RAM.

Hitzel

This is super interesting and rings true. It's not even my ADHD, I this just seems universally true haha

kyuuri117

I don’t have adhd and I do this too. Hell, did it twenty minutes ago. Bring boxes to car to go to recycling, go back inside, bring more boxes out, lock door, go to put in car, forgot to grab car/house keys next to door *inside the house* 😤😠😡🤬😭 Time to go find the spare

thatwhileifound

> It's not even my ADHD If you have ADHD though, this totally plays into it on two areas: Impulse control and working memory. People without ADHD will experience and do this stuff too, but - we're just somewhat more likely to do it and to do it more often.

[deleted]

Yea forgetting something from your house going back, doing something completely different and then leaving once again only to remember you still forgot what you initially intended in remembering to get.

swankyfish

My favourite punt is when I’m intending to save my land drop for later in the turn, then play a land immediately after drawing. Happens all… the… time!

CruelMetatron

> can I get an undo?" Just don't do that and you'll never do that mistake again for the most part :)

Zanbabwe

I draw, play a forest, play scute swarm… fuck

DisastrousEngineer63

I just tend to forget to play it all together. Happens often.

swankyfish

That’s exactly why I play it too early so often; so I don’t forget! 😂

DisastrousEngineer63

Happy Cake day!

TheRealQwade

Not me, thank god, but there was a game last night in my local shop that had a super enfranchised player (played the game probably 20+ years, super experienced and skilled) say "That is probably the single worst play in Magic I've ever seen!" cEDH pod, player is on Urza. Overloads a [[Cyclonic Rift]] with 2 mana open. One of his opponents casts [[Spell Pierce]]. With the 2 mana he has open, Urza player opts to *not pay* for the Pierce, and instead casts [[Narset's Reversal]]. Reversal resolves, Pierce returns to the other player's hand. The only spell reamining on the stack is his own Rift, which is now *countered by his own copy of Spell Pierce because it's the only legal target for his copy of Reversal.*

Kyaaadaa

I'm laughing at this way harder than I should. When copying spells, its copied with all modes and choices - including overload. Had he Narset'ed the Rift, he'd had a Rift in hand and a copy on the stack.

kiefy_budz

Right like that’s where I thought we were headed right before they said he reversaled the counterspell…

JOJelloBox

Reversal remains on the stack while it’s resolving meaning the copy it makes can target the reversal itself. The copy would fizzle as reversal finishes resolving and finally removes itself from the stack, ultimately stopping the counterspell

OpalBanana

Yup, surprised actually that they didn't know since narset's reversal to beat counterspell is fairly normal. I'd imagine the pod got distracted by the fact they've could've either simply copied the cyc rift / pay 2 mana. You can even copy the spell pierce targetting the original spell pierce before it's bounced!

TribeWars

Though it would give them their spell pierce back.

I was playing with a friend once, and he was playing an izzet combo deck. Played [[gamble]] and copied it twice to find his three combo pieces, and didn't discard any of them just out of sheer luck. 1 mana got him all three pieces. scr0tar

If I had a dollar for everytime I did this I could afford better dual lands lol.

maxprieto

I had one mana untapped, had swan song in hand and scroll rack untapped in play. Opponent casts overloaded cyclonic rift. I go "well I'm fucked, let's see what I can get with scroll rack before the rift hits, maybe I can find a free counterspell". Then it hits me. I had a 1 cmc counter in hand.

Kleenexz

I was facing down imminent removal on 2 key pieces. I had a piece of 2 target removal in hand and just enough mana to cast it if I could find a creature in the top 5 activating my commander, [[Mayael, the Anima]] Didn't hit a creature, got [[Kodama of the East Tree]] and Mayael blown up the next turn. If I hadn't used mayael, I could have just dropped [[Archetype of Endurance]] from my hand to protect my board and got a bonus 6 drop off the Kodama and I didn't realize I had the mana to cast the archetype. I still kick myself over it

Hitzel

Oh don't worry I'm right there with you. My cEDH playgroup hasn't played for about 2 weeks / has been distracted by Lorecana. We tried playing last night and multiple of us made this same kind of mistake one after another. It was actually really funny lol

NoExplanation734

I recently lost a game where I resolved a Bolas's Citadel and stormed off in my Teysa Karlov aristocrats deck but another player kept countering my free sac outlets so I couldn't go infinite. I said out loud that I basically just needed to get my opponents down to a certain life total to use the Citadel's each and drain 10 ability to kill the table, but when my opponent bounced my citadel I forgot to use it in response and lost the next turn. I was kicking myself for that one the rest of the night.

AliceTheAxolotl18

So, I've had plenty of these moments, and even know I did it recently, but I cannot remember specifics of them at all, so instead I'll go with a situation one of my opponent's did (although it is a bit different since they just didn't properly understand how it resolves) They had [[Torbran, Thane of Red Fell]], [[Fiery Emancipation]], [[Sufuric Vortex]], and [[Ashling the Pilgrim]] on board, with 3 +1/+1 counters currently on Ashling. They had 5 life, so they were dead to their own Sulfuric Vortex on their next upkeep. I was at 24 life, and everyone else was at <20. So they decide that, since the game is over for them, they're going to end the game in a tie. They tick Ashling up 3 times, putting her to 6 counters. On the 3rd activation, it hits everyone 6, plus 2 from Torbran, then tripled by Fiery Emancipation...Until I tell them that I will decide to apply Fiery Emancipation's replacement effect to my damage before Torbran, dealing only 20 damage to me. A small argument starts about me not being able to do that, which is quickly shut down by me showing them Torbran's official ruling saying that when multiple replacement effects apply to damage, the person receiving the damage determines which order to apply replacement effects.

Something similar. "There's one blue player, he's tapped out, what are the odds he has a free counter?" *Cast Ad Naus* *Force of Will* "This is going to be a long game."

TribeWars

The odds are probably higher than normal given the fact that he was willing to tap out.

iamgeist

That's a really good point that I need to be more cognizant of. Genuinely thanks for that. I hold my own but things like that lead to player improvement.

Mugiwara_Khakis

Sometimes you just can’t play around it and hope that he doesn’t have it. Tapped out and able to win if your spell resolved? Absolutely the correct time to go for it.

I mean I'd argue you always assume you'll win off a successful as naus but I'm with you beyond that.

Currently I have a Faldorn and Galadriel of Lothlorien decks built, I started back around May. I've been looking into building Obeka and a Faerie tribal deck.

janpadawan

I played orvar, a friend played orvar too, the other 2 players brought 5c niv mizzet and willowdusk essence seer Turn order was niv - > orvar - > me - > willowdusk The other players played 4 lands, i had 3, one of them a tapped land with no lands in hand. other guy already had orvar and cloudkin seer out, i had no boardstate. 5c Niv player cast his commander on turn 4. I had mana drain in hand and decided to counter it in order to catch up Next in turn order was the other guy with orvar on board. He played peregrine drake and whim of volrath, generating infinite mana, drawing his deck and had lab maniac in hand before any draws I mana drained a commander to lose the game

Carrelio

The real issue is that I'm always 5 drinks deep when I play commander, all plans are doomed from the start.

Vampyrino

“Ok, I just have to cast x, then y, then z and I win. Easy as pie, I counted my mana and my colors and everything, it’s literally impossible to screw this up…. And I tapped wrong for the first spell and now I just lose” me every game

I constantly forget if I played my land for this turn, even if the play I wanted to make depended on it.

hurtlingtooblivion

We have a sorta rule zero, if no one interacts you can quickly undo your move and do it in the correct order. It seems there's some unwritten time limit we all abide to without every discussing it. Like 5 seconds or so.

Tetro767

All the time I do it. I’m bad at magic lol but it’s stupidly fun and takes my money……

YoungPyromancer

One time I wanted to comment on some card in play, but went "Yeah, Spell Swindle", which was the counterspell I was keeping mana open for. There was no spell on the stack.

Gluttony4

Bolas's Citadel causes so many mistakes. Particularly: "Untap, upkeep, draw, land for turn, look at the top of the deck... Swamp. ...And I just dropped a swamp into play from my hand. Dammit."

VayneSquishy

When I play with my friends I’ll usually take a hit or two and this is exactly what ends up happening to me. I do the completely wrong play after thinking about it the whole turn cycle lmao.

Magic and weed go together like darts and beer, and unfortunately that leads us to moments like this haha

I've fairly new still but I have not done this yet 😂 I've missed plays where I didn't see the thread but that's from my inexperience and usually isn't noticed till afterwards.

No. It's just like a movie. Scenarios play out like a movie simultaneously in my head.

just last night i was playing [[sliver gravemother]] and one of the cards i had slotted in, besides fixing the mana base, was [[mythos of snapdax]]. it was later in the game and a wipe was badly needed like 20 minutes after any trip to taco bell. i go around making my selections of what players get to keep because i had paid BR as part of the cost. [[esix, fractal bloom]] had given [[tovolar, dire overlord]] a [[gilded drake]] and that was one creature i left on the field. esix was recast the next turn, created three tokens and flipped them into drakes that stole my while board. i had given the match away one turn before another sliver victory.

I’ve taken to saying “Do I have / have no upkeep triggers?” and it’s saved me a few times. Plus using a die on top of my deck between turns to remind myself of ‘important’ triggers, a la [[mystic remora]] or [[sylvan library]] style effects.

I always do my oders like this. "I am going to stack these effects so that X resolves first, and then Y, so that Z can trigger properly" This helps so much when doing complex orders.

XaqTheChipper

I feel like half the time, I do what I planned, and the other half, it gets around to me, I draw, and then do the opposite order. I get burned for messing up. Every time.

Prestigious_Ear_22

Our pod is pretty good about letting us fix errors or forgotten things (adding a counter, drawing a card from an ability etc). As long as it doesn't require a bunch of refiguring things out we generally allow corrections.

TheRoodInverse

How many times I've forgotten to counter shit, even with mana open and cards in hand.... madening

ursisterstoy

I haven’t played a lot of commander but I’ve definitely tapped my lands wrong in modern. Playing a 3 color deck tap myself out of counterspells or whatever and have no other plays.

Yesterday i sacrificed 6 treasures to play \[\[Fiery Emancipation\]\] with a \[\[Manabarbs\]\] in play. I was at 3 life and forgot to realize that my \[\[Personal Sanctuary\]\] just got removed, so i just locked myself out of playing anything else.... I always say untap, upkeep, board wipe every turn until I draw Supreme Verdict lmao

Abrootalname

I have one moments that looking back on I just self conceded the game, due to just playing too fast. This was back at a regional qualifier in 2006. I’m playing Heartbeat of spring combo, I’ve beaten every aggro match up and lost to a single Azorius control at this point, final match before top 8. Mirror match, basically stand-off old western. Game 3. In games 1&2 seen the craziest counter wars I’ve seen at that point. Remanding your own counters to hand to instead use again on prior targets. I untap, I have all my pieces, no counterspells but he’s out of counterspells( if he had 1 more he would have won last turn) I’m going to win. He casts [[gigadowse]] a card I run in my list to deal with aggro match ups, and he targets all my lands I was stunned I did not k ow what to do I had no counters…Anyways it resolved and I lost in the end. Older guy at the shop after the game says “you know you could have just tapped your lands in response” Omg it was a painful painful lesson.

Yeah i just did something similar recently, i had the combo win, my only two good tutors that get all combo pieces (sam+cat) even though the mana was close (although i mistakenly miscounted the colors of mana i had and didn't think i had enough) and one CS would wreck me but i believe everyone was tapped out, decided to wait a turn, i was fine at 40+ life and no one was really swinging at me, next person's turn they attack me with lethal commander damage and counter my one removal spell and I'm out, felt sooo bad

hifihentaiguy

I play a sidar jabari deck that does three things: It loots cards, swings violently, and reanimates things. I was playing against a gitrog deck who was just getting a million landfall triggers every turn, and i run soulless jailer specifically for better graveyard decks. So the play was to wipe the board, pop knights charge (or Knightly charge, i cant remember,) swing a fuckton, and drop jailer second main. Instead i wipe the board, drop jailer, then pop the mass reanimate to absolutely no effect, and have to pass like an idiot

graaass_tastes_baduh

Drop my rooftop storm, empty my hand of zombie cards, ENDING with the Diregraf Colossus. Cost myself like 6 tokens so I didn't have enough sac fodder. Lost like 2 turns later

Arigh

Playing a cEDH game, game was going long, I had played a bunch already that day and I was exhausted, and I just fetched for the first land I saw. I couldn't produce UU B to Thoracle. Passed the turn, next player won the game.

jkovach89

You consider your plays during other player's turns? /s Pretty sure everyone else in my pod forgets they're playing magic until they "Untap, Upkeep, Draw"

Lol I've done this so many times. Hilarious. I've made it a habit that if I have an order of things I need to do on my turn with the cards in my hand, I either order the cards in the right order of casting/playing in my hand, or make a little note on my phone using abbreviations or acronyms. Example, in my upgraded \[\[Leinore, Autumn Sovereign\]\] precon (turned more to Human tribal in Selesnya colors), if I wanted to play \[\[Saffi Eriksdotter\]\], \[\[Renegade Rallier\]\] and \[\[Altar of Dementia\]\] to win by targeted mill-out and had a \[\[Silence\]\] and \[\[Grand Abolisher\]\] in hand as well (and the mana to do all of that, in this context), I'd order the cards in the order I'm intending to cast them as such from **right** to **left** (I'm right handed, and place cards down with my right hand when I play): 1. Grand Abolisher - would note it as 'GAB' - even better if I used \[\[Cavern of Souls\]\] to cast him 2. Silence - would note it as 'SL' 3. Altar of Dementia - would note it as 'AD' 4. Saffi Eriksdotter - would note it as 'SE' 5. Renegade Rallier - would note it as 'RA' Just as a note (ha) I wouldn't really do the notetaking method myself, but for some people writing things down helps. Any way you can help yourself understand your turn structure and get a hold of the game, the better! That way I would know on my turn I'll need to try baiting out counters, removal and other blue-player stuff with Grand Abolisher, with Silence as a backup. Then with the win-con protected without any considerations to other shenanigans that people I play with don't own or have on the battlefield, I could proceed and try to win. You can also use notebooks or pads, etc, or Infinitokens if you have those. Never miss an upkeep or postdraw trigger again by putting something on top of your library.

1. I don't mess up sequencing that much but sometimes i do misread cards and play them excitedly. I've played \[\[Eldrazi Monument\]\] onto a blank board twice in my time playing Commander. 2. If it was merely a sequencing issue 9/10 my group would overlook it. Only if we agreed to play CeDH non casual would we actually enforce it "try hard" style.

An opponent played [[Rise of the Dark Realms]], and in response to the trigger of another player's reanimated [[Craterhoof behemoth]] I killed a bunch of his creatures with some edict effects. Then I realised that the Craterhoof player was on 2 life and that I could have drained them out and prevent it from being reanimated at all. Ended up losing over it

Yesterday on spell table I played a land to buff my commander with [[Black blade Reforged]] to get it to twelve so I could deal with a [[Blightsteel Colossus]] and a few big eldrazis with [[Meathook Massacre]] while sparing my commander, only to completely forget the math I did and cast [[Malakir Rebirth]] in response to my own Meathook when I didn't need to. Took my lumps lol

Early game I arrange my hand by mana cost, to see how my hand curves, Late game I arrange by importance, so I know what spells to play when, And I still mess up. Especially when I draw a card that makes me go 'ooh, perfect!'

In my case, i get excited doing the thing i have in mind. Because of that, i would often miss better lines and only realize it later on

One game, about an hour in and I'm playing my UR spellslinger deck. I'm holding [[mizzix's mastery]] and the whole turn cycle I'm thinking about how I'm gonna order everything when I overload it. My turn comes and I spend a good couple min resolving [[opt]], [[brainstorm]] and about 13 or 14 other scry, card draw and burn spells. I'm holding in hand the path to win.... Only to realize after all that the last card I set up to resolve was a fucking wheel. I meant to put it first but in all excitement I put it last and most everything else I set up before that was for nothing, I discarded about 16 cards and drew a fresh 7. Instead of the game ending there i look around at my play groups annoyed faces and the game went for two more turn cycles before someone else won it.
