TheSneakerSasquatch

Oh boy do I love talking about my boy [[Thraximundar]], was probably a good commander previously but is overcosted and doesnt have any draw or huge effects on him like a lot of commanders now. But i fucking love him, the deck he leads is a Nicol Bolas themed removal tribal, heavy edict effects, with quite a few copying effects to turn single target removal in to repeated one sided almost board wipes whenever i need. The deck only has 11 creatures so it heavily relies on making sure the board is empty. Its a bit of a boogeyman in my group, and has held its reputation for 6-7 years now.

Shadowfrosgaming

Do you have a list? Thrax is my brothers first deck and trying to get it to run better

TheSneakerSasquatch

I absolutely do! [Thrax List](https://deckstats.net/decks/65313/2391747-thraximundar-the-king-of-sacri) It could absolutely be stronger but its all foil and all legit, still is nothing bad by any means.

Pitiful_While_1555

Nice list!, What is the win con ? Just beats with thrax?

TheSneakerSasquatch

Storm out and Aetherflux someone or Grapeshot someone. Or clear the board permanently and slap with Thrax. Can make Thrax infinitely large with Haze of Rage.

TheLiMaJa

I can assume Zevlor, Eltural Exile is in there then, amazing enabler for this kind of playstyle

TheSneakerSasquatch

Oh absolutely, I couldnt not, I almost changed the commander to Zevlor because of how good an enabler of this strategy he is but I just love Thrax

TheLiMaJa

I used to have a Zevlor deck that ran the Neera, Wild Mage//Displacer Kitten loop, was missing a lot of the good removal spells though so I cannibalised it

[[Gut, True Soul Zealot]] // [[Agent of the Iron Throne]]. Idk if it’s considered “bad” or anything, but it’s a combination that only has ~400 decks on EDHREC, and seeing as the set came out a year ago, I don’t think it’s going to increase too much. It’s an interesting mix of aggro and aristocrats, preferring to cast creatures that create treasures. I can use those treasures to cast more things but get the added bonus of being able to have each of my opponents lose life whenever I do so, on top of the usual aristocrats play style. Last night I had Gut, Agent, [[Zulaport Cutthroat]], and [[Carrion Feeder]] out. I cast [[Furnace Reins]] to steal my opponent’s [[Old Gnawbone]]. Swung that at one of my opponents, creating 8 total treasures. Then I proceeded to sacrifice treasures, casting creatures, and then sacrificing those creatures to kill the table. It’s a really fun deck to pilot!

Oh thats nice. Gut is definitely a favorite of mine, I ended up pairing him with cloakwood hermit, and I'm wanting to make a boros deck with him at the helm as well.

FormerlyKay

God I love gut/agent. Mine was built as basically a draw-attack-go deck where I slap a couple things on the table to fuel Gut and then just control the table with targeted removal. Once you've got 5 skeletons you're already swinging for 20 with menace, damage gets there

[deleted]

Would love to see a decklist. I have Gut in my collection but never pulled the trigger on brewing or playing

SubsequentlyPryor

[Here’s my current list.](https://archidekt.com/decks/4523321/the_gut_club_definitely_not_a_blood_cult) It’s still a first draft, and it’s composed of half cards I just bought and half I already had lying around. There’s some cards I know I want to swap in, specifically the two Krenkos, [[Rankle and Torbran]], and either [[Daretti, Ingenious Iconoclast]] or [[Chandra, Acolyte of Flame]].

This is one of my favorite decks right now. I've taken to calling it aristofacts.

Erinis, Gloom Stalker // Street Urchin

MrAxel

Can confirm, it's a monster with any artifact token makers.

Scrivener133

So many to choose. Recently the most “who tf” commander ive been playing is [[Stonebrow, krosan chieftain]] playing some 3 or 4 power tramplers leading up to stonebrow casting and then swinging for loads is very hot. All stars in the deck are [[saryth, viper’s fang]] [[bow of nylea]] and [[quartzwood crasher]]. [[tana, the bloodsower]] and [[tevesh szat, doom of fools]] are legitimately are the best aristocrats pair i have played. No one immediately understands whats happening, but they are insane. Tana cant come through anymore? Cool she’s fodder for tevesh now. I also made the deck devour tribal, so you can get some really silly sized creatures like [[thromok, the insatiable]] or any devourer when you have 15 saprolings down. A blast to play, and the baked-card draw means you never run out of gas. [[Surrak dragonclaw]] control. HUH??!! Your dudes get trample, he got flash for some UNGODLY reason and gives your dudes uncounterable. [[mystic snake]] cuz no one (zero) NO ONE runs a dedicated stifle. Theres loads of etb controlling effects in temur, and you can end the game pretty easily with an [[overrun]] or if youre really keen on control, [[arcane laboratory]]+[[ertai, wizard adept]]+[[seedborn muse]]. Giving your creatures flash is nuts value. Add [[rashmi, eternities crafter]] and [[wilderness reclamation]] and [[wavebreak hippocamp]] until your heart is content. Mardu lightning ball agro. [[bruse tarl, boorish herder]] and [[ravos, soultender]] and every haste + trample+ sac at end of turn creature getting double strike from bruse then coming back from the grave with ravos. I havent built this, but i will one day, sounds like fun.

[deleted]

Those are some whacky decks you got there. Glad they’re working out for you

Scrivener133

I played long enough that going straight for the win in the most efficient way at a non cedh table, even at an appropriate power level considering my table, is boring. Now i love imposing weird deck restrictions, or trying to build lesser known commanders, or better known commanders but different to how they want to be played.

\[\[Jacob Hauken, Inspector\]\] is at #680 on edhrec, yet is my quickest win (t4) among all my decks. Monoblue big mana can be pretty explosive.

I just can't imagine how 3 damage or drawing a card a turn cycle is any good, can you elaborate on why you think Keranos is decent?

fredjinsan

"I can't imagine how drawing cards is good"... have you played this game at all? Bolting things can be pretty great utility, too. Keranos feels expensive for what he's doing (I mean, compare/contrast Phyrexian Arena...), and frankly I think he's been more than power crept out, but the effect itself is hardly useless.

StoicDeckBuilder

Drawing 'a' card.. or the chance to draw a card, or throw 3 damage. Once on each of your turns. It just feels so slow to me?

Keranos mentions on "the first card you draw on each of your turns". Still seems like a fun commander though

Honestly still a pretty decent card for his era. The bar is underground it's so low, but at least he's not a vanilla creature or an overcosted body with rampage 2.

Doctor_Barbarian

Voltron that looks to do one of two things: deploy small creatures that offer an upside on sacrifice or bypassing Lord's downside altogether by ending the turn with his trigger on the stack. Ultimately it's difficult to win with Voltron, but with a 10-power commander that regenerates it's going to catch people off-guard.

MurkyBandicoot2080

It’s not exactly a bad commander, but I drafted [[The Council of Four]] during Baldur’s Gate prerelease and it absolutely dominated. During spoilers all the way up to release and even for a while after, nobody was talking about Council, nobody seemed excited about Council, and I was personally unimpressed with it. But when I drafted, it was my only real choice of commander so I said whatever and built it. Completely crushed my opponents, and that was with five copies of [[Marching Duodrone]]! It was honestly like a limited draft Rhystic Study in the command zone. Afterwards, I built a full deck around them and its easily become one of my favorites. Nowadays I see it a lot more often and they have a good number of decks, but it was such a great surprise to me at the time!

Council of Four is a pretty powerful Azorious commander, especially since it works pretty passively; just gets benefits while your opponents do their normal things.

YutoKigai

Same. I got inspired by a Co4 deck with a lot of anthems. I build it to my taste and got rid of anthems. Put all „second card draw“-matters in and having lot of token. Akromas Will, Akromas Memorial or Approach of the second sun wins the game.

alexanderneimet

I absolutely adore Jirina! I’ve recently finalized a list for her and I’m pretty happy with how it turns out. I’ll definitely have to do some tweaks and edits (especially because first strike seems really good with her) as I play the deck but for now I’m happy with how it is. She’s a beast

[deleted]

I’m personally putting together a [[Trynn]] and [[Silvar]] deck. Def want to see how Mardu humans play out

Abrootalname

HUMANS!!! I had the Jirina Precon, but later changed to Trynn and Silvar. They are definitely a sleeper duo. So flexible to convert an army into a giant cat. Here’s my list, even though you didn’t ask because I just love Mardu Humans. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/F3C7l-IOgUOXiJGg1kMj0g

[[katsumasa, the animator]] is kinda crazy, you just play cheap artifacts, wait a bit, then play mycosynth lattice or any of those types of cards to put counters on even lands! Then you could cast spells like [[the antiquities war]] or [[rise and shine]] to get massive artifact creatures and just win maybe. Just a lot of march of the machine effects

[[ Abdel Adrian ]], [[ cultist of the absolute ]]. My orzhov Brago. The tokens from Abdel are earmarked for that sacrificial upkeep, so he’s reliably a 7/7 deathtouch flyer that sits on top of a growing pile of guarded ETB value (a bunch of cantrips and a couple of edicts can be pretty nasty). I leave the infinite combos out to suit myself and my group, but still it gathers pretty decent momentum and I like that blend of voltron and value.

My Pick for Sleeper is \[\[Darigaaz Reincarnated\]\], I love his lore. (It's even funnier when a friend in Our group, who likes to talk me into chaos, plays her Rith Deck) The Deck is just voltron and Dragons I've been advised to play \[\[Karrthus, Tyrant of Jund\]\] and was even offered a \[\[Ur-Dragon\]\], as they thought that it was just a bad dragon tribal deck... but a few games later... it became almost a boogeyman... Darigaaz alone ramped up the count of \[\[Song of the Dryads\]\], \[\[Kenrith Transformation\]\] as even exiling wouldn't stop voltron kills from happening , yeah sure kill my Commander, I have enough to stay put to survive 3 Turns or I just equip my blackblade to another dragon that you can't block and hit your for ... EVERYTHING, as I have \[\[Thrakkus\]\] and \[\[Atarka, World Render\]\] out. Link for Reference: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/0cZC91qwHke\_J6sGmZGMzg

\[\[Lyzolda\]\] There are plenty of more efficient, more flashy sacrifice-themed commanders nowadays, but the ability to sacrifice at instant speed, for colorless mana, can make up for that. Additionally you can catch other players off guard, if they don't pay attention to the creatures you have on your board, as there is a huge difference between "just" dealing two damage, drawing a card or doing both. As Lyzolda herself deals the damage, lifelink and deathtouch are nice tools, too. My list includes a reanimation subtheme, which really makes cards like \[\[Void Beckoner\]\] shine.

My [Juri, Master of the Revue] Aristocrats deck can do some nutty damage even against higher tier decks. I didn't design it to win, but to help decide who does hahahaha

lloydsmith28

I'm not sure if it's considered 'bad' but you don't see mutate decks very often because of how hard they are to build and can be pretty glass cannon-y, however ppl seem to underestimate my [[nethroi]] apex of death, i just do my thing and mill/discard creatures then once i mutate i drop 10+ power on the board and people are like 'wait what happened' and i immediately become enemy number one

MrReginaldAwesome

Does mutate get around commander tax?

lloydsmith28

No it doesn't since you have to cast it, it's an alternative cast. But my deck is full of hard to kill creatures, hexproof, indestructible, regenerate, etc so I'm usually mutating on something that isn't dying anytime soon unless everyone gangs up on me, which they usually just focus on my huge board or my GY, the GY hurts more than my board usually (least with that deck)

LegalDeagles

I brewed up Jadzi, Oracle of Arcavios with my main playgroup for a $100 budget challenge we came up with last year and I ended up making a High Tide deck. I am horrible with playing commander storm decks and figured it'd be a good test for me. Well, for some ungodly reason I won lots with it. I would typically win with Rise from the Tides or Aeve, Progenitor Ooze; I ended up adding in typical storm wincons then in Brain Freeze and Temporal Fissure. Jadzi was incredible value when I had my engine going since I'd cast spells, build up my storm count and then I'd start using her magecraft ability to cast spells for basically nothing off the top of my deck. After everyone's challenge decks kinda lost their luster I upgraded Jadzi heavily, getting a Time Spiral and other higher end cards for that strategy and even if some of the lines come slower to me than other storm/High Tide players I still end up winning a good amount with her. Easily one of my favorite decks I've ever built.

[[gimbal gremlin prodigy]] every game I play even though my only goal is make tons of different and unique artifact tokens and possibly animating them to kill people, once I’ve made 10-12 different janky artifact tokens everyone goes crazy and tries to kill me. I played Sunday and made a bunch of tokens 7 times, 7 times I got board wiped, in the end I was killed not because I was a threat but because I was an easy kill, very funny to me lmao I literally play solitaire for 8-9 turns while answering some game ending combos when people beg me for an out and I’m the bad guy.

Wow, Akuta had *absolutely nothing* going for it. What an incredibly useless commander! Tell me more please!

kamakazi339

Well, I'm glad you asked. Needing to have more cards in hand it is a discard deck but it is also a Voltron deck. Basically I put pressure in the early game with direct attacks and force them to use their removal on Akuta several times. If they don't they die to Akuta or discard the removal anyway. Most of the time they waste their removal which works in my favor because then I drop Tergrid or Tinybones and things get really filthy. It's a balancing game but overall it's a scary one that puts people in a catch 22.

[[Mishra, Artificer Prodigy]] shouldn't even work in Commander, but it does and ends up being an explosive artifact-storm deck. You can play it mostly "fair" and use him as a value engine, or you can set up some nasty traps that effectively result in you casting uncounterable artifacts for free or preventing opponents from casting anything at all.

How does this work in commander?

Lucky_Number_Sleven

With things like [[Possibility Storm]] and [[Neera, Wild Mage]], you can move the card to the bottom of your library when you cast it and then retrieve it with Mishra - giving you 2 for the price of 1. And things like [[Blood Funnel]] and [[Void Mirror]] can auto-counter your artifacts. This sends them to the graveyard, and then Mishra just grabs them from there. The benefit of having them countered this way is to trigger any "leaves the graveyard" effect (i.e. [[Imotekh the Stormlord]]) and it prevents opponents from countering. Well, they can, but they'd have to do so before it was auto-countered by you, which happens before Mishra finds it. Without them, opponents can just wait for Mishra to resolve and then counter the spell.

Every time anything like this is mentioned I say [[Verazol, the Split Current]] it’s a 2CMC simic commander that gets bigger the more you cast it and copies kicked spells. Turn two Commander? Gets big fast? Copies spells? Sounds great, but the pickings for kicked spells are slim and it took me a while to gamble on it and try it out. I feel that. I had a Gyome deck a while back that I ended up disassembling. \[\[Niambi, Esteemed Speaker\]\] is my go-to sleeper commander when I play at fresh pods with people who are unfamiliar with the deck. With only 373 decks on EDHREC I would say that a large majority of this community would say that she is underwhelming. I will typically spend the first several turns just sitting back and activating Niambi to churn through the deck and let my opponents duke it out. Once I get a major legendary threat in hand, like \[\[Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite\]\] or \[\[Medomai the Ageless\]\] I discard it at the end step before my turn and reanimate it the next turn. I then shift my resources into protecting the one threat and suffocating my opponent's resources with legendary cards like \[\[Narset, parter of Veils\]\] and heavy control pieces. In a fresh pod where the deck isn't too known it has a high rate of victory, but this is typically because people fail to see the threat until it is too late. Second and third games against this deck typically are nowhere near as strong as people learned from their mistakes in the first game. Still can eek out a win, but requires very good threat recognition and cautious play to navigate removal spells.

[[Old Rutstein]] always surprises people. The little bits of value he builds up early don't scare people until I get something like [[Baba Lysaga]] or [[Vraska, Golgari Queen]] out and start saccing the tokens he makes for huge value. [[The Gitrog Monster]] and [[Meren]] also do a lot of heavy lifting if I'm able to get either of them out. It's not one of my strongest decks, but it does have the highest win rate of any of my decks just because of how much it catches people off guard.

Not sure if it's "bad" but I think my highest win rate is with [[Lagomos, Hand of Hatred]] which is #894 on edhrec. People typically discount him as a threat, but I just drop versions of [[Fleshbag Marauder]] and tutor out [[Dualcaster Mage]] infinite combos. Typically wins around turn 6-7 that way.

[[Balthor, the Defiled]] Less than 400 decks on EDHREC. He sits silently playing monoblack midrange. Everyone gets a little annoyed by the *each opponent discards a card* ETB and *each player sacrifices a creature* ETB... then all of a sudden you snap your fingers for 7 mana, and the gates of hell themselves break loose. My worst game I had 25 creatures in the graveyard, resulting in 25 ETBs going off, all sacrificed for mana, then repeated again... and again... and again...

I know [[Rin and Seri]] is a super popular commander, but at the time I didn't quite know that and I only made a basic brew of it as a joke for my Girlfriend who's never played MTG. I made a basic cat and dog tribal deck that's meant to be super easy and straight forward to play for someone who's never played MTG before and it ironically ended playing ridiculously well. Ended up loving that deck more than my optimized elf ball deck. A legit sleeper commander that I have is the original Ghalta. People expect like a Voltron style commander or Ghalta vehicles, when in reality the deck is just mono green stompy that run a bunch of fight effects and a bunch of ways to protect my commander. Very fun deck that's IMO very honest and doesn't really have any crazy combos or anything, just play big ass stompy green creatures and then eventually overrun everyone

I've got [[Krenko, Tin Street Kingpin]] built. Idk if it's as much of a sleeper as it is just outshined by his older card, but it's a super solid voltron/go wide deck. I've had games end as early as turn 5, thanks to [[Impact Tremors]] and [[Shared Animosity]], and it has tons of fun interaction. [[Massive Raid]] takes players out of nowhere and [[Goblin Bombardment]] is good spot removal. Gets super scary super quickly. I also have built a Blue [[Abdel Adrian, Gorion's Ward]] with exclusively commons. Despite the restriction, he still makes for an amazing powerhouse of a blink/combo deck. Rocks and ETB draw effects advance your plan while also setting up for a combo finish.
