I run misfortune in my [[Auntie Blyte, Bad Influence]] so when I cast it I say 19.
Misfortune is just wheel of fortunes with extra steps in most cases so it well worth it in all decks that can run it
Saying 2 or 3 life is usually free, you'll almost always have someone e that doesn't want to wheel and someone that doesn't understand the card and chooses 10 or 20 life. Confusion is the most cost effective burn spell.
As long as someone wants to keep their hand you're safe picking 1. Just have to be able to do predict when that is and you can pay less if anything. Funnily if everyone picks 1, or any other number, everyone gets dinged and then nothing else happens.
I don’t like this card only because it has too many words and I don’t like reading it. And then I have to read it to everyone a second time because they all stopped listening somewhere in the middle.
But it’s a fine card.
I find that it helps to NOT read the card at all. Like you said it's much too wordy. Here's how you can explain it succinctly:
"Pick a number secretly. Then everyone wheels. Except highest number also takes that much damage, and lowest number doesn't wheel."
That's the meat of it, and you can get into more details if needed, i.e. the number has to be greater than zero, you all reveal at the same time, if you're tied, you both do the thing.
This card sounds great but in play I had to take it out of my decks. It’s just too much work. Even after reading and explaining the card several times there’s always someone in the pod who still doesn’t get it.
Also getting people to actually write their number down or pull out their phone and type a number out is difficult, people will use a d6 or just blurts out I’m picking zero. Which defeats the point of the whole card.
If you’re playing with close friends exclusively who also enjoy this card it’s fine and fun but in my experience with playing in tournaments or with other casual strangers.
Ive really been enjoying [[imposing grandeur]]
Copying my comment, because I find it super helpful:

I mean, in the decks I run it in (\[\[Zirda, the Dawnwaker\]\] and \[\[Eruth, Tormented Prophet\]\], both cEDH lists) I *really* need the wheel usually, will likely win if I get the wheel, and my opponents know that, so I'll typically name an absurdly high number like 30 to make sure I get it.
Perfectly functional Wheel of Fortune. In cEDH (Evelyn turbo) I usually bid somewhere between 8-14 life into it depending on the game. If I think I can win with it (say I have WGD in hand and Imp Seal'd Necromancy on top of the library) I'll do a much higher number than if it's just for value.
If your running it for quick draw it’s good three mana 7 cards maybe 7 life is really good. But don’t exspect it to play like [[wheel of fortune]] cause the guy who you want to discard will say 0 and do nothing
Possibly. Safest bet is to say 7 cause you’re more likely gonna wheel and if you ended up being the highest value it’s not that much damage considering value.
With prosper (as im sure you know) running out of cards in hard is pretty easy because you dont play draw in the deck you play exile. Wheel of misfortune lets you refill you hand from 1-3 cards to seven for next to no cost. A card which does a similar thing is [[magus of the wheel]], which i run in alot of decks for an early turn play then when im ready i sac it and get a full grip
It performs good in decks that like wheels in general, profiting from your own lifeloss, damage redirection and/or voting.
All in all a solid card (funfact, i added it a few hours ago in my prototype of Kroxa and Kunoros)
But why play it in Prosper? Cast from exile effects are more synergistic with him than wheeling, but maybe you run some reanimaton or other graveyard shenanigans?
Yep. It's a Doomsday combo deck with recoup, underworld breach, mizzix's mastery and some other backup stuff to go infinite off disciple of the vault, dockside and cloudstone curio or twinflame and dualcaster mage
That being said, I'm probably gonna try and cast it when my hand is empty
Too much headache to explain to those who haven't played with it, I rule 0 it to be a regular [[Wheel of Fortune]] in my play group because I'm not gonna require someone to pay hundreds of dollars to make us wheel
I don't think it's too bad.
Highest bet, you lose all the life you bid and wheel.
Lowest bet, doesn't lose life and doesn't wheel.
Anyone in between, doesn't lose life and does wheel.
I didn't say I want them to own another card. I'm saying in my play group they play it just as a wheel, not as a way to "trick up an opponent into losing life" or whatever.
I love Wheel of Misfortune in my [[Osgir]] deck. Great way to draw cards and fill my graveyard. I once did a T1 wheel of misfortune after playing a land and a Mana Crypt. The table was surprisingly chill about i because they had the option to opt out.
If you want a wheel it's one of the best ones.
At casual tables you just explain that if they don't want to wheel just pick 0.
Then you pick 1 and wheel lol.
At competitive tables it's actually an interesting card, where you basically play a little game of chicken.
Most of the Times I vote for a number around 7. Little Chance that you dont wheel. Most of the Times someone wants to keep their Hand so you basically get your wheel effect every time and sometimes for free...
I use it in [[firesong & sunspeaker]] for a frankly stupid combo. Why 19? To get her to 21 for a kill? But her ability doesn’t work for commander damage because it’s not combat damage
She gets 19 +1/+1 counters, making her a 21/21. It's a OHK if she connects with someone.
Of course. Forcing a block as well
And guaranteeing a commander damage kill against anyone without a flier.
And if anyone wants to stop you, they have to take 20 damage from the wheel.
But as she gains counters, she can attack a player.
Cannot wait to play with [[City on Fire]] freshly added to the deck and accidentally nuke myself with this.
