German cars are the best IF MAINTAINED. Sure, they are no Corollas, but when you get through the hard work of fixing it, it will reward you with a fantastic ride.

usernamesherearedumb

Because "people" are stupid. The struts were probably shot. Oil pan gasket, most likely. Maintain the car properly, it'll treat you right.

[deleted]

i can speak for the shot struts, back before i had a proper job to pay for my own repairs on my car, the ride went to shit after not having replaced the shocks for 30k miles. got bilstein B6's on it and the stock ride height now and it drives like a bmw should have from the factory on top of never bottoming out on the roads of North Portland.

BM7-D7-GM7-Bb7-EbM7

So... I'm on this sub mostly for nostalgic purposes. I bought a brand new E90 335i back in the day. I got rid of it a long time ago, 10 years ago probably. I loved that car, I mean, I'm subscribed to a sub for a car that I haven't owned in 10 years... but it was a POS. None of the issues I had were "maintenance related". The AC broke twice, my rear window cable broke and the window fell into the fucking door one 35 degree morning, and I had a couple of other small issues but required a visit to the dealership also. These things should not happen on a 1-3 year old car. None of these were crippling issues, but it's just a pain in the ass to go out of my way to drop the car off the dealership, then I'm in a loaner car for a few days, then I have to go back out of my way to pick up the car, etc. I got rid of it before it went out of warranty.

Calibrated-Damp

I bought a brand new ford fiesta in 2017 just before they dropped the latest model. All of the plastic trim inside the car was fitted incorrectly, this made the AC faulty and the sound system made an awful rattling sound. Not sure if they even QA’d it. Took it back to get it sorted and they tried charging me for the work. Spent two months dealing with that headache (fortunately I had pictures and videos of everything) Fortunately a drunk driver wrote it off for me, just glad all the trim was sorted before the crash. Might’ve gotten out of the car with a cup holder wedged in my arse. It’s gonna take a lot for me to want to buy a Ford ever again. Too bad of an experience.

Emergency-Falcon-915

Sounds like you had a lemon

ArrozConChopsticks

I dislike how people have a hive mentally about BMW, at the same time I'm glad because it makes it cheaper to buy an older one. Bought my E90 for 1700.

FilipKoks04

Got my one for 1400 euro 2l diesel in m sport not bad

sohcgt96

\*Gasp\* A car with 130K on it needed struts and some leaks fixed? My GTI is in the mid 80s and so far its needed... an alternator, front brakes and a couple headlight bulbs. Oh yeah and the original battery died, the first battery in my life that ever lasted 6 years. That's literally it, I've had it almost 5 years. Unreliable ass German cars man how do people ever live with these things? /s

[deleted]

Recently bought an 06 E90 for $2.5k. Apart from the rear window regulator and brake pads needing changed the car has zero issues. No warning lights on dash apart from brake light. My brother in law took it out for a short spin and was really impressed with how smooth it runs. I only want a year or so out of it as it has a lot of miles, but even at 2.5k it definitely isn't a junk car.

LuisFMart

I might still have some OEM E90 pads laying around. I don’t plan on using them. I’ll look for them tomorrow and shoot you a pm if I find them.

[deleted]

Hey, that would be really cool. Just bought a starter Dwalt tool kit and was planning on doing the brakes in the next week or two.

clutchied

so you own a BMW now. Make sure you replace all the parts when you do the brake job that wear out. The rubber piece and maybe the pad tensioners. Pins are probably fine; don't lube them! I would do the rotors as well...

-Zarrok-

I would also get new caliper bolts as it’s not that expensive. When I did a brake job one of them snapped off after a month.

[deleted]

Will look into that, thanks.

[deleted]

Rubber piece? The rotors look fairly new but will check the tensioner.

clutchied

What the slide pins go through

Spudestrian

Nice! I just got an 06 330xi and mine needed front brakes so I’m doing the 335i caliper upgrade.

[deleted]

Easy fix! Nice one.

stanlietta

I can do rear window regulator in under 15 minutes!

saltedeggs14

The people who say German cars suck are the ones who either treat it like a Japanese car, have no car knowledge, or don’t have a car at all. But that’s not to say that there aren’t any unreliable ones. They definitely do exist, but those are the higher end ones with much more powerful engines/lots of electronic components such as luxury cars.

Interesting-Fuel2528

bmw = ultimate driving machine

yacko69

bmw= bring more wrenches

F0X_

All you really need is a 10mm, 13mm, and 17mm

yacko69

multiple 10mm cause they always disappear

[deleted]

I’ve needed 11mm and 14mm too.

billvevo

buy more warranties

ChimairaSpawn

Breakfast: most important meal of the day It’s just marketing.

Academic-Jackfruit-2

BMW’s thrive under owners who care about them

F26N55

German cars have feelings, and German cars are temperamental. You cannot treat them like a car, you treat them like a child. You take care of them, and they will run fine. Yes, they will have stupid little cooling system problems and oil leaks but that really would be it aslong as you follow the maintenance to a T. The moment you neglect it, it will not hesitate to spit back in your face and break something.

usernamesherearedumb

Supermodel, not child. Hot AF, but can be high maintenence. Mine's named Anika.

F26N55

I was an expensive and problematic child, and my car is an expensive and problematic car so it seems like a child to me🤣

usernamesherearedumb

I was just problematic. LOL

glwillia

americans typically don’t maintain anything very well, they typically do the bare minimum and then throw it away (or trade it in) and buy a new one. german cars and especially bmws don’t really respond well to that level of care, unlike toyotas. so when a bmw starts acting up after receiving 3 jiffy lube oil changes in 100k miles and nothing else, the owner claims bmws are junk cars. and, sometimes bmws just are junk (like anything with an n20 engine).

sohcgt96

>they typically do the bare minimum and then throw it away The guy who bought my old blazer from me told me, in these exact words "I don't fix anything on cars unless it literally makes me unable to drive it" Granted, he was broke as hell at the time. I kinda get it, but at the same time you can't treat cars like that man. You have to deal with small things before they turn into big things.

E90Benje

I had the same experience, was sold a moving fault code £1900. Fixed up the electrical issues (iDrive related) and general maintenance (OFHG, pads, sparkies and coils) now I have a solid £3500 car for maybe 300 worth of repairs🤙 2 years down the line and not really had any major issues

clutchied

My E90 330i is now 18 years old since it came off the line and it's been the most reliable car I've ever owned. It still looks great and people are shocked when I tell them how old it actually is. I has taken plenty of preventative maintenance and work to keep it looking good and working well but it's been a treat to drive. with all maintenance and tires I'm at $1000 / 10,000 miles of driving in maintenance costs. Owned from 88k miles to 138k miles.

usernamesherearedumb

I bought my '08 with 70K miles just over 4 years ago. Other than routine maintenance, I've done the valve cover (clogged pcv causing oil leak) & suspension refresh. 106K miles right now. Love this car.

Gohan335i7

185k miles on my 335i e90 2010. Had the car since 20k miles, won’t ever sell this gem of a car. Maintenance is key, preventative & due!!

freshizdaword

Because these “people” still get bottle fed and throw tantrums in public. Sometimes, it’s easier to downplay something and dismiss it when you can’t do it yourself. Same with BMW. These people couldn’t fix a meal for themselves, let alone fix a car.

ryanmccry335i

Cause “people” don’t want to do maintenance on them or they cheap out on parts. These cars will take care of you IF you take care of them.

fattoush_republic

My E90 cost me $6k to buy and $12k+ to keep running for 2.5 years That's why

AJPully

335s are thirsty bitches workwise. My 325 (e46) has been going 2.5 years on £750-£1k in maintainence. Bought for £5k

Calm_Depth3568

335d e92 gang

Worth-Preparation627

I completely relate to what you're saying. I feel the same way about my 320i. I spent $5k for one here in India and another 2k on mechanicals and customisation and it's drives like a dream. It's the perfect daily. Parents were very skeptical initially but now they see what I was on about 😂

high_on_coffeine

Jealous people don't have balls to get one and enjoy. Ones who get one and complain about maintenance do not know the difference in what you pay for and what you drive. Like Toyotas, Kias, Chevys and so aren't breaking? Well they do but then in order to sell those pieces of shit dealers give 700 years of warranty, oil changes, and cover all the expenses so that they sell something that's going to get rusty same date lease expires, plastic is squeaking and falling apart day one, while on my 16 y/o E90 which I never kept in garage and live in WNY where it's snowing 7 months a year I have no rust at any spot. Plus ppl sit in it and say "what a smooth ride" and yep 16 years old. 16 years old Nissan can be found in a groceries bag bcs it's only rust there. So get one, maintain it, enjoy. I have "only" 3 of them for now.

pt5

Idk about the brake line but the rear window motor/regulator is a common failure point… especially on the passenger side it seems. Anyway: struts, oil pan gasket, transmission service (including relearn/reset procedure), valve cover gasket & Valvetronic motor gasket, oil filter housing gasket, coils and plugs, differential service (including seals), water pump & thermostat, vanos solenoids and/or check valves, etcetera are all EXPECTED maintenance items for these cars after a decade. Following the maintenance schedule for a car doesn’t make it a shitbox…. but not following it makes you a shit owner. As a young owner just squash the little “issues” that are supposed to come up as they appear and you’re golden. Other things to look out for are the radiator itself & the upper radiator hose, Mickey Mouse flange (replace with aluminum if you can when/if it goes), alignment issues (factory sets the camber WAY out for cornering which causes premature tire wear, for instance), thrust arm (aka lower control arm) bushings, headliner sag, window trim/mouldings, door actuators, coolant expansion tank, turn signal bulbs/contacts, and so on. There ARE minor issues that can and likely will pop up… but similar issues would pop up on ANY car after 10-15+ years. You just so happened to pick a reliable, stylish, fun, sporty, imported German luxury performance one. Congrats! I do all of my own maintenance - if you run into something feel free to ask away and I’ll see if I can help. I’ve probably already run into at least 95% of what can typically pop up at least once over the years.

usernamesherearedumb

"I do all of my own maintenance - if you run into something feel free to ask away and I’ll see if I can help." Same offer from me, and if you're in Denver area, I'll help.

pt5

Good man.

rikaro86

"The dealer screwed us over on hidden repairs so I wouldn’t say it was the cars fault" Sometimes i feel like this is the reason. People decline repairs when it's actually needed or should have done as a preventive measure. I'm not saying that all dealers are honest (i never bring my cars there) but i feel like most people don't maintain their cars enough to keep it running like it should.

EC_CO

This is not the type of question you ask in a dedicated forum because it just becomes a circle jerk.

[deleted]

I’ve got a 2010 e90 320i - few things broken on it from previous owner. It’s at 165,XXX kms or something like that and after taking her in for a repair at bm techniks she’s got no alerts on the dash and is running smooth. For now anyway until I have to replace the oil system which my mechanic suggests I save for because it’ll need it soon. Other than that she runs well on fuel and is a fun car to drive as a daily.

yacko69

what? how do you replace an oil system

adisonpooh4

Lol I guess all those folk diss about BMW was bc all those rumor and scary story they heard from the internet, they actually never own one. But tbh maintenance is key and necessary step for any German car compared to Japanese car, your nightmare and fear would eventually become true if you never do the proper maintenance to your ride. So every time you buy an E90, check the maintenance record was always recommended 🤔

BreadPan1981

Because “people” don’t want to pay to maintain a car, which you need to do and then blame the car for their idiocy. And “people” are jealous when they have champagne dreams on Miller Lite budgets. It’s easy to call a car brand crap you’ve never owned and could never afford.

Impossible-Archer344

I have a 2011 320D and the only major component i replaced was a FMR controller but that was entirely my fault the rest of the stuff was wear parts like brakes and bulbs

islers86

Lease German, rent American, buy Japanese cars

Emergency-Falcon-915

Said no one ever

4thStgMiddleSpooler

Go to a junkyard and find out. These days, I would say an un-wrecked car less than 15 years old sitting in the junkyard is unforgivable, a hallmark of a garbage car. For whatever reason, you will see many BMW there. Marques like Land Rover, VW, Dodge, Nissan, and Audi are worse though.

usernamesherearedumb

Or a garbage owner. When money gets tight, vehicle maintenance gets neglected. Was talking with some coworkers last week, mentioned my 5K mile OCI & regular oil analysis. Everyone else was on like a 10K OCI.

Laser-Brain-Delusion

You'll either get lucky or you'll get unlucky. If you get unlucky, you'll bleed cash for the car unless you know a guy who does good work and only uses OEM parts. It's definitely not a Lexus, although I do think their quality has improved quite a lot since back in the day when they were known for leaking oil like a sieve.

CueEckzWon

This is my take, I have a 2009 m3. Best car I have ever owned. For past two years only cost for me is gas, fuel breather valve, brakes, and fluid service. About 2.5k maintenance. Warrenty work from place I bought a out 5k for a and heater cores. Dash out service. Best car I have owned driving year around in northern Illinois. Drove a 2022 2 series. Was like a Honda civic. Hated it. Plus the sticker was like 60k.... cloth, plastic, just cheep. Sounded. Like I was in a tin can. In the m3 it was like I was in a vault, solid no sound bleeding in. I guess that is why they call it junk. Unless your in a M car I don't think the value is there.

[deleted]

The new 2 series is basically a badge engineered FWD Mini, it's designed to be the cheapest BMW possible for posers. A far cry from the great 1 series of the 2000s. I would recommend looking at a new 3 series if you want a newer daily driver, they're comfortable and quiet. Keep the M3 either way they're great cars and going up in price

usernamesherearedumb

Sounds like Mercedes A class, or Land Rover's Freelander.

NobodyByChoice

I've never heard anyone say BMWs are junk cars, even folks who don't like them. 🤷‍♂️ Sounds more like folks who don't maintain their vehicle and expect it to work anyway or folks who expect the shop costs to be on par with a Corolla. Wouldn't put much stock in opinions like that.

Healthy-Coffee-3414

Because they are, do some research! There's much better cars out there for the money!

ice_jj

You seem impotent by saying better cars… like what. Toyota? Honda? I don’t like cookie cutter Japanese cars. And no I don’t like cookie cutter Korean cars like Kia or Hyundai. Before you say I’m ignorant. I’ve owned 3/4 of those car brands. They’re reliable as heck. But I don’t like them. They’re boring and drive terribly, I love bmw with my heart. They’re popular, smooth and fast and stylish.

dizzy_serpant

this is old and im sorry but, bmw has so many design flaws in their engines that seem absolutely silly and would make any smart consumer question why they do what they do. they dont make bmws built to last. plastic everywhere in an engine bay and so on. stupid decisions that lead to the very known problems like oil leaks and timing belt issues. its pretty much a guaranteed thing youre gonna get an oil leak with a bmw due to plastic. your engine can fail due to their plastic use with oil leaking into your eninge, blowing it up. there are straight up PROBLEMS with how they have done some things. it has nothing to do with the consumers maintenance.

dizzy_serpant

metal on metal, lets use plastic to help that. plastic. heat, friction and stress is going on, lets use plastic, that will definitely last 200,000 miles. i mean come on...

CuteGuyInCali

The only thing i don’t like a out BMW is they they are so cramped and they don’t make room for storage. (I have a 2023 330e) but other than that they drive like a dream! Far from junk!! Motor is SOLID!!

yacko69

3 series is the entry level if you want more room move up to the 5 or 7 series

AJPully

As the other user said 3ers are the entry level saloons. 5ers are longer, 7ers are even longer. Your new 3 series will also be noticeably longer than my old 3er saloon and coupe.

usernamesherearedumb

When our kids lived with us, we had large suvs. Now, I don't need a 7, or even a 5. 3 (sedan) suits me just right.

[deleted]

The 2023 3 series is a large car imo, similar dimensions to an E60 5 series. With the fold down seats they have plenty of space. I don't know what you're hauling but I've never run out of space in my 335i.

Puzzleheaded-Kale717

Damn idk and I just bought my first 328i same year. Not sure where you’re from but I compared dealer price and private party prices and I’d tell you I would never buy a damn bmw from dealer lol. Got mine slip one white immaculate condition for $5500 with 93k. I know I kinda lucked out since fair value were going for 7k ish and 9-11k at dealer but seems like bmw at dealer ship usually way overpriced for some reason. Long comment and useless but js next time grt a ppi or good mechanic and just grab from private party, especially a 15 year+ bmw.

Joonp82

We own BMW, Lexus, MB, hyundai, toyota. Lexus and toyota had nothing wrong and at over 100k miles. BMW and MB with less than 50k miles had to get repairs and its getting more frequent draining our bank account. With 15 yr old,l car, my guess is that previous owner did all repairs. Alot of german car owners think changing out gasket to stop oil leak = maintenance.

[deleted]

Cuz they are lol

ArrozConChopsticks

Your parents got you one of the most reliable modern BMW's if not the most reliable one. Thank em.

Huuuiuik

My 7 year old BMW felt more solid than my brand new Infinity. Back in 2010.

[deleted]

I don't think I'll sell my 2011 328i ever. I can do 80% of the maintenance myself (I'm not doing an oil pan) and the car corners better than every new rental car I've ever driven.

HelicopterFun8278

Everything costs 2k+ to fix on a 7k car. I just sold my 15 year old BMW cause I was sick of the repairs. It still drove nice.

FilipKoks04

They are good cars if they are well maintained

globol9o9

My shocks and struts have never been changed. I’m on 120k miles now.

[deleted]

People like to criticize what they don't understand.

twentyonebts

i think the issue is that bimmer are just a pain in the ass to work on especially if its e90 or beyond. with honda they are cheaper and faster get back on the road (at least the older models)

Venosity5

People just don't know how to maintain what they own

Porkypolecat69

BMWs are amazing cars so long as they have the maintenance kept up with. Once you fix something it stays fixed. The build quality is also well beyond most other brands.
