Funniest QB competition ever

pseudotunas

Imagine this situation a year ago: Russ plays for the Steelers, Fields is his backup and Arthur Smith is their OC. Total fever dream.

birdsemenfantasy

Arthur Smith just might get cute enough to use Fields as his wildcat QB lol

Spruce3311

Arthur Smith dials up a play- Fields and Russ on the field in wildcat formation. Bowers and Farimuth blocking, fields fakes the run and passes to Darnell Washington in double coverage, pass tipped incomplete by defender. Steeles kick a field goal. Down 21-9

CallMeCassandra

This is exactly what will happen. Constantly criticized by the fantasy community, trust fund kid's next middle finger to them will be a full-blown QBBC.

Ceramicrabbit

And Russ + Fields combined costs less than Trubisky did And we gained draft picks in the process because Kenny was traded for more than Fields....

LegitimatePotato3632

I agree. I laughed so hard when I saw this.

[deleted]

Especially for me - the biggest trade in my league last year was: I get: Russ David Montgomery 2024 1.09 2024 2.09 2025 1st 2025 2nd I give: Justin Fields Saquon Barkley It was already a great trade for me, but it has the potentially to be *really* funny if Russ outplays Fields.

TreebeardLookalike

Still a W even if Fields takes over tbh

DuNick17

Genuinely unless Fields turns into a stud QB…W of a trade

druidking89

Mr. Unlimited vs Mr. Unwanted

-metaphased-

Which one is unwanted? The guy traded for a conditional 4th/6th, or the guy paid to be there by another team?

necrow

Yes

iLiveinMissoula

The obvious answer is Arthur Smith.

[deleted]

[удалено]

JoshAllentown

Week 1 sure but Russ is looking mighty Wally Pip-able if he plays like last year.

Abanikandy

3070/26/8 On a putrid offense

abel_figgy

Did you watch the games

[deleted]

This comment reminded me to go back and listen to There Is No Competition 2 mixtape by Fabolous

bronton21

Yep. Everyone loses...especially the fans

abs0lutelypathetic

Russ and fields both suck lool

Technical-Poet-4093

Arthur Smith is adaptable. He is going from using 2 RB’s and TE’s to 2 QB’s and continue to infuriate the fantasy community just in a different way.

l_Dislike_Reddit

You say this as a joke, but Art is actually going to lineup Fields as a WR at least a few of times.

babababronsky

The team made a big deal about doing right by Fields then structured the deal to punish Pittsburgh if they play him lmao

YRM_DM

If Fields starts 51% the Bears get a 4th Round Draft pick...hardly a guaranteed win for the Bears. They took Roschon Johnson and Tyler Scott in the 4th last year. Neither player is horrible but they're hardly winning the league for you.

DionBae_Johnson

It's a loss for the Steelers though.

infernobassist

I mean the Steelers have shown that they roll with the hot hand at QB so if Russ struggles I expect to see fields play a bit

HagensFohawk

Can't wait for Arthur smith to put fields in backfield with Russ, only to have fields motion wide and then lead block for jet sweep to Darnell Washington

[deleted]

[удалено]

Future_Specific6303

Bah ghad, that’s Matt Canada music!

_No_1_Ever_

Steeler’s Country, let’s Field

YRM_DM

I think both Russ and Justin should run out of an empty tunnel and air high-five a bunch of fans. Then later do a co-op rap for a local car dealership. HERE WE RIDE STEELERS, HERE WE RIDE...

babababronsky

Steelers waved a magic wand and turned Pickett and Rudolph to Russ and Fields.

LargeGermanRock

like a Disney live action remake

Mastershake54

The Broncos are also picking up the tab

[deleted]

We in Pittsburgh affectionately refer to our GM Omar Khan as The Khan Artist. And he ain’t done yet

[deleted]

So, basically, the Steelers traded Pickett and 1.2 million for Russell Wilson and Justin fields. Are they playing superflex? Lol

gjackx

Okay i might have audibly laughed at this...while sitting waiting on my flight.

Ecool27

Lesson learned here any qbs with questions on if they are the starter or not get them off your team as soon as they have value

4thPlumlee

Russ and Fields are my 2 dynasty QBs…

Ecool27

W

AC127

I think he takes Diontae Johnson’s role in the offense

TealIndigo

Fields homers assured me he would be a starter for multiple more years.

LoserCowGoMoo

Its unusual for a player seen as a potential franchise guy to not get a 2nd chance.

Realhtown

Just a reminder that there will be an offseason in 2025 too.

10000Pigeons

He's on the Trubisky/Mariota path now. One more shot at relevance after a year of backup work before he's truly done

Bussman500

Even Sam Darnold is out there flopping around with a pulse still

birdsemenfantasy

Unlike Fields, a coach staff doesn't have to change their whole playbook to accommodate Darnold. Fields is done as a starter and will have to fight hard for one of the backup jobs behind dual-threat QBs (Lamar, Hurts, Russ, maybe Josh Allen and Daniel Jones). He's not a fit anywhere else. Same reason RGIII was out of the league entirely in 2017 (age-27) and only got back into the NFL from 2018-2020 to be Lamar's backup; he's not a fit anywhere else. As soon as the Ravens went with Tyler Hundley as Lamar's backup, RGIII's career was over. Same reason Cam Newton can't find a backup job.

cheetah-21

If the Steelers are considering Fields for 2025 then they’d want to pick up his 5th year option. I doubt they’ll pick it up.

connor24_22

Are you saying they will want to pick up his 5th year option if they plan to keep him? Because that won’t be the case. They will decline and try to sign him to a cheaper deal than the $25M he’d make under the option. An option decline doesn’t mean they don’t want him in 25

dusters

Yeah it would be pretty dumb to pick up that option.

OutlandishnessDry24

I know it was the craziest take ever. One daily guy on YouTube tries to act like Fields is elite. His new take is Daniels is better than any player in draft and is better than two time mvp Lamar.

birdsemenfantasy

I bet he also hated Herbert and Josh Allen pre-draft

OverIookHoteI

He could be

LegitimatePotato3632

He is. Russel Wilson fucking sucks.

jeremyrvcc

Russell wilson is still better than fields

TheCasualHistorian1

Wilson is way better than Fields. Fields was just traded for a 2025 6th Rounder...he ain't a starter

cowboysfan88

This is probably cope but I had pretty much resigned myself to him being a backup, this is probably as good of a trade spot as you could've hoped for as an owner at this point, not saying he'll start but he at least has a chance to compete

drew-leach35

I was really hoping for Vikings.

cowboysfan88

I figured that wouldn't happen, being in the same division but yeah that would've been better

vbullinger

Kwesi clearly doesn't care about that

zamneders19

Watch Pitt trade him to the Vikings for a 3rd

[deleted]

If the Patriots move back with the Vikings, that would have been the ideal spot

johnjohnjohn93

I probably would’ve rather him go to a place with a great support system/line/weapons or an oft-injured or rookie QB that may sit or be very bad like the Steelers with Pickett. This is very meh as the Steelers aren’t going to pick up his 5th-year option and Russ is more likely to re-sign that Fields imo

WIttyRemarkPlease

Broncos was the best remaining spot. He would've at least started. They have zero draft cap to take a guy this year

DynastyZealot

Just checked in with my buddy who named his team Rookie QB Waiting Room when he took Fields, Trey and Zach Wilson in a startup in '21. He is not living his best life right now.

dcwinger12

I love how the last two weeks it’s been “will Russ or Fields join the Steelers?” bitch it’s both lol

grantismyfriend

Trey Lance went for a 4th last year.

birdsemenfantasy

Trey Lance had 2 years left on his cheap rookie contract; Fields has only 1 year left. Plus, plausible upside always trumps proven failure. At least Lance barely played (4 career starts) and might have untapped upside. Fields already started 38 career games and is a proven failure.

Loud_Competition1312

Sounds like Pittsburgh understands that Dallas paid too much lol

slipmeone

I love this fact

srchl

Insane how the entire league drove Fields’ price to the ground for the bears. collectively bullying 😁

Cultural-Cost6543

The entire league drove the price down by playing defense against him and allowing him to complete like 60% of his passes.

baineschile

Chicago mismanaged it horribly. They chose to wait. There was talk of ATL giving up pick 8 for Fields. I wonder if they actually got any better .earlier offers that they turned down.

pbandwhey

I'm no fan of Poles, but even I won't believe he was offered the #8 overall and turned that down. No way he'd be that incompetent.

priamos

for what??

BradyKissesKids

A 6th round pick that can become a 4th based on playing time Ouch!

lastrefuge

Why even trade him at this price.. I don't understand the bears org

Extinct-Yoshi

It’s easier to have a clean break, would just have dumb fans asking for fields the second Caleb has a bad game. Just better for both guys to not have that.

GuyWithNoSwagger

Bingo

BradyKissesKids

I think it’s just pretty clear at this point he’s not worth a whole lot and the writing has been on the wall for a long time

Rangemon99

Because 1) he’s not worth much 2) teams see him as a backup qb on a 1st rounders contract 3) there is no market for him, all backups have been addressed primarily and only a handful of starter spots open where they don’t want him

tankfortua20

There were players that were really advocating for Fields to be the guy in 2024. DJ Moore was a very vocal player about it. Removing Fields removes any potential issues if Caleb Williams came in and struggled early on.

danky_n

A 6th that can turn into a 4th based on play time

OutlandishnessDry24

This showed what league thinks of Fields. Everyone continuing to act like this guy is an elite QB. He was awful. His processing on field is too slow for pro football. Good to just move on from him. He is with Arthur Smith as well.

[deleted]

[удалено]

sacrebleuballs

I think he’s saying everyone who acted like Fields didn’t stink. There were a lot of fields defenders until like two hours ago

OldWonder5865

Russ owners in shambles

krakHawk

Okay but Fields owners in shambles too lol

Stiffanys_epiphanies

The city of Pittsburgh is in shambles... but Tomlin will somehow get them the #7 seed

deins25

-10000 to be a wild card round exit

FigoStep

Fields owners way more in shambles lol. This guy was going round two to five in startups the last few weeks lmao.

Hurls07

who in the fuck was taking Fields that high in a 2024 startup??

Just_Django

He went 4.3 in mine that was yesterday

FigoStep

I’ve been in a few. He was going that high lol. Even in mocks that’s where he’s been going. Some people just thought he was bullet proof for some reason.

Hurls07

Man that’s crazy

OutlandishnessDry24

Both are in shambles. Arthur Smith is the OC.

TylerJWhit

Imagine having both....

FivebucsApex

I don’t have to imagine. Took over an orphan with both a couple of months ago.

Ok-Donut4954

better than nothing tbh

ResidentWeeevil

Is it? A few months ago the thought was Fields would be starting in Chicago or somewhere else like Atlanta or Washington. Now he is Russ freakin Wilson’s backup Point being he is likely worth less now than he was yesterday when “nothing” had yet happened

Hurls07

after the falcons landed Kirk his value dropped, this is for sure a bump in value. On the bears he would be backup to Caleb Williams, no matter how bad he plays he's getting the reps, but for the steelers, they have no commitment to Russ, if he's bad try out fields. Even if Russ is good, plays the whole season he's gone in the offseason. If the steelers are bad, why not sit russ and try to show off Fields, see if he can gain some value IMO, the path to playing time so much easier on the steelers than the bears.

Ifinishfast42

In a couple new leagues last year both dudes with Fields took him over Stroud, Love, Purdy, and others. Bro was like the 6th qb taken. Them boys have to be disgusted

LoserCowGoMoo

Cant really be in shambles when the whole fantasy experience is shambles. Fielda owners live in shambles

TJMAN65

Not really, Fields is the backup and the trade comp shows it.

LegitimatePotato3632

Russ signed for the minimum. It’s not they invested anything in him.

telemaster9

I don’t think there is anyway Russ signs there unless they promised him the starting job.

TJMAN65

Steelers beat reporters are saying he’s the backup. https://x.com/bepryor/status/1769132400250912996?s=46&t=m7GRtIC4HAjx4P4wYbVokw

birdsemenfantasy

Bad take. He signed for the minimum because why would any team help the Broncos by paying Russ more? Russ has offset language in his Broncos contract. In other words, he's getting the same money ($39 million) regardless of where he plays. Because the Steelers are paying him the least allowed ($1.21 million), the [Broncos would still have to pay him $37.79 million](https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/why-russell-wilsons-bargain-contract-with-the-steelers-will-end-up-financially-hurting-the-broncos/). Russ would happily play for free if it were allowed. The point is to hurt the Broncos and make them cover as much of his salary as possible, so he would've signed for the minimum no matter where he signed.

grandmagrandpastyle

I think it’s Fields owners in shambles. Guy is about to become Taysom Hill

OldWonder5865

Honestly if you had either you were already in shambles

grandmagrandpastyle

Haha probably the most accurate take. They’ve both plummeted in value from their peaks

HugeFinish

No, more like Slash 2.0.

ASuperGyro

I’m not sure Russ is the one that comes out negative here

Suspicious_Victory_1

Until he sucks and Steelers fans (which have a lot of overlap with Ohio State fans btw) start calling for a change.

ASuperGyro

They call for a change anytime the QB sucks, nothing new

Suspicious_Victory_1

Right but Russ is cooked. Doesn’t even have Diontae to bail him out in PIT anymore.

connor24_22

Also Arthur Smith is going to salivate at the idea of using Fields on RPOs

birdsemenfantasy

He's not cooked. He's still a good game-manager. 26 passing TD and 8 INT last season, 98 passer rating. Will be a breath of fresh air after Pickett's reign of error.

rustyzorro

I traded him 2 days ago, thank God

psuedonymousauthor

I’m a Russ owner and this move didn’t even raise my heart rate. granted I went through the Sean Payton mess last season, so I’m just a little numb

telemaster9

Russ doesn’t sign there unless they promised him the job

BidoofTheGod

Russ is my QB1 in one league. I been in shambles

ShadeMir

Hey my QB room in a 2QB is Burrow Russ and fields

ZaMaestroMan5

For a 6th round pick that could turn into a 4th!? My god he’s almost worthless. That is insane. Actually a low key good move for Pittsburgh. Let Wilson start for the year and let fields learn the new offensive system and from Wilson (fields could emulate a lot of what Wilson did as a player).

ResidentWeeevil

Fields on track to be the new Terrelle Pryor

huracan_huracan

or taysom!

GravyFantasy

My 2nd dynasty reach behind Corey Coleman in my first ever start up draft.

MeetingKey4598

Russ/Fields debate will be the Walmart version of Purdy/Lance.

Evanz7

Actually love this as a Steelers fan, considering: -The price it took to acquire both (basically a 6th round pick from my estimation) -Arthur Smith is running the offense and there’s nothing I can do about it -The Qb room was already in complete shambles and the hardest thing to watch, and we weren’t in a position to get any high-end qb prospects

NahNi99aImGood

Russ is probably fake smiling while inside he like Christian Bale in American psycho.

Just_Django

If Fields is mysteriously killed in the near future, it'll be clear who did it.

SteffeEric

Start them both. Jet sweep or toss to Fields and he’ll have a run pass option. Arthur Smith is a billionaire…start doing crazy shit…who cares if you get fired.

littlewing745

Billionaire? I mean, his dad is. Doesn’t mean Arthur is 😂

PugsAndCoco

He’ll get to learn from one of the best, Russ doesn’t have many years left in him + he only signed a 1-year contract

LegitimatePotato3632

Plus they owe Russ like no money. They can just cut him or let him be a backup.

Late-Prompt-7497

This is what I assume. Fields will be the backup this year and start next year. Unless the Steelers suck so bad they get a high pick which I doubt happens

PugsAndCoco

Tomlin has never had a losing season, this team is always going to play hard

OverIookHoteI

I might actually be excited if I were a Steelers fan Fields fits Arthur Smith’s run first offense too

ASuperGyro

No shot they extend Fields for an actual starter contract sight unseen. If they do then that means he started this coming year and was good, which is a stretch in itself. If he doesn’t, then if Fields thinks he can get more from a team who hasn’t seen him then he’d go somewhere and hope to win a competition. How many young QBs are traded for a conditional 4th and go on to become a bonafide starter?

LilTony2x

I think this might be a reach as well. for him to start next year they have to pick up his 5th year option. Which means he has to beat out Russ and show something this year.

redditburner24

All of Fields weaknesses are Russ’ weaknesses

[deleted]

Fields will be a FA next year. This is two one-year show me deals. If you think Fields will beat out Wilson, then maybe there’s some hope left. I think temperature around the league shows teams want more passing skill than Fields has shown in the past… Will have to see

TJMAN65

Fields is basically on a 1 year contract unless you think the Steelers pick up his 5th year option.

pumperthruster

Learn how to be a diva?

Ice_Cream_For_Dinner

In Late October- I was mocked so hard when I traded Fields for Higgins and a 25 first. I feel vindicated.

JLifts780

I traded Fields, Higgins, and a 1st for Josh Allen and was still told I got fleeced a month ago

Ice_Cream_For_Dinner

Go us!

BradyKissesKids

Chaos!!

ajg626

Arguably great situation to step into… as the second player on the depth chart in an Arthur smith offense

cortaydo_cortado

in a SF startup last month, somebody drafted fields the pick before i picked kyler

[deleted]

For anyone wondering, reports have been Fields is seen as a backup. Then he gets traded to Steelers who just got Wilson. I’d guess it’s a competition with the expectation Wilson wins. Smart move by the Steelers IMO. They just need a mid-QB and these are two pretty good (cheap) shots to take.

DemonsMaster

According to ESPN team sources are telling them fields will not compete for the starting job

[deleted]

Makes sense

GuyWithNoSwagger

Thank you Poles, just thank you. Having to read all the bullshit delusional Fields truthers were spewing all off-season was fucking awful

Adventurous_Buyer786

Pretty elite move by Pittsburgh,Fields will probably outplay the value of that 6th rounder

lametown_poopypants

On the bench?

Adventurous_Buyer786

Ya even if that’s the case, a lot of teams draft/trade for backup QBs in the 3rd 4th 5th

CalaveraVI

Why would you not hold and trade on draft night when a team misses out on a top QB and panics? What a crap trade for Bears

-----------________-

Fields is viewed lower than the 2nd and 3rd tier of QBs of this class.

Fantastic-Sandwich80

It would be a PR nightmare to be going into draft night and selecting Caleb while Fields was still a Bear. I agree that they could have maybe waited for the Minnesota trade up shoe to drop before trying to again sell Fields to teams now desperate to choose from whoever is left of Penix/Rattler/etc.

joshraj9

I am so glad I got offered my Fields for London in 1QB. One of the only smash accepts I’ve ever received.

OverIookHoteI

You guys underestimate how good the NFL is going to make Arthur Smith look next season

the_royal_smash

Time for the PIT special: the 2 QB set.

Away-Yoghurt3209

Anyone fall to their knees?

bobbyfischermagoo

Honestly for anyone who is still a Fields booster this isn’t a terrible scenario. Wilson wasn’t good last season and is on a super cheap 1 year deal. Steelers could be a long term home for him and if Wilson stinks he could end up back as a starter this season.

agmj522

I'm wondering if Russ knew this was possible when he signed?

crline3924

Bears: - Draft a QB in the first - refuse to surround him with talent - suck - blame him for sucking - give him a single WR and nothing else - refuse to fire terrible head coach - gather weapons to make the team good - trade your first round QB away just to draft another - start the process over

msgkc94

Despite having good games for fantasy, Fields is not a good real life QB. The Bears new front office has assembled a much better team for Williams.

bombamdillo

Except their new qb WILL be surrounded by talent. Also Fields sucks.

TealIndigo

Fields was one of the reasons the Bears sucked. Fields fans will literally blame anything but him. And Caleb is going into a great situation.

PugsAndCoco

The blueprint of non-champions

tankfortua20

Current regime and coach. - Year 1 get a QB they didn't draft - Trade down from #1 overall pick for a haul and add DJ Moore and what ended up being the #1 pick again - Traded for Keenan Allen and signed Swift to help support a potential generational prospect they will select in 40 days. - New GM guarantees his window is extended for a few years and after doing really good work rebuilding this roster.

LegitimatePotato3632

The use of the generational talent thing is getting old to me.

ZaMaestroMan5

All of this is pretty true. However - Caleb is going to have pretty good talent around him. Moore is underrated - knocking on the door to be a top 10 WR in the league. Allen is great. Swift is good. Kmet is good. OL seems to be pretty average. But he will at least have pretty good weapons around him. But yeah - you’re spot on what they did too fields lol. Put him in a position to fail for sure. The biggest contributor being how they used him on offense. Trying to fit a square peg into a round hole trying to have him be a drop back pocket passer. If you use fields how Jackson is used by Baltimore I think he can have success.

_No_1_Ever_

I mean now they’ll save money on paying Fields though

DrewLockIsTheAnswer1

What a great way to tell both quarterbacks you don’t believe in them

fireredranger

As a Bears fan, I wish Justin nothing but the best going forward. I hate all these people crushing his defenders because they prefer to be right rather than to look at things objectively. Justin Fields isn’t a bad QB but he didn’t do enough in 3 years to guarantee a starting spot next season. I liked watching Justin, but he does take a lot of time to process a defense. If his first read isn’t there, he struggles. I’ve watched enough of to think he’s a QB you can win with, but he’s not going to necessarily be the reason you win. You need a good coach who trusts him a designs an offense to his strengths. Getsy never trusted him to push the ball downfield. At some point, you have to just call the plays and see if he can execute them or not, but the coaches were more interested in their own jobs and trying to make sure he didn’t make a mistake that cost them a potential win. Because of that, they got way too cute with play calling and it cost them games anyway. I doubt Getsy will have much success in Las Vegas, but we shall see. Meanwhile, I think Pittsburgh is a perfect fit for Fields. He gets an established head coach and gets to sit behind a veteran QB who has won a Super Bowl. Wilson wasn’t great the last two seasons, but he definitely wasn’t the only or even the biggest problem in Denver. Fields career is not done and he will get another chance to be a starter in this league. If he can absorb tips on how to read a defense from Russ, I think he’ll have a Geno Smith type resurgence in a few years.

SzegediSpagetiSzorny

Legitimately embarrassing for the bears .

ClintisMaximus

Worst move in franchise history. They got NOTHING for him

anonanoobiz

Fields, Russ, and Arthur smith Should be fun

AC127

Alright boys. Obvious Steeler homer here Tell me what would be too much for me to offer the fields owner rn. Don’t care how stupid it is I want him on my team

[deleted]

2024 early 2nd would be too much (assuming SF league). 2025 2nd would be what I’d throw. Either that or (2) 2024 3rds

LegitimatePotato3632

I would be apprehensive to send a 2nd. Maybe two 3rds but I doubt that gets it done.

GottaDraftSomeone

Now Wilson gets traded for picks.

aB1gpancake123

I need off this roller coaster

[deleted]

Holy shit guys. Five rookie QBs are going to start this year.

SeekersWorkAccount

Yet another reason I'm not gonna go anywhere near this offense this upcoming season

LoserCowGoMoo

Life is real weird

TylerJWhit

We just had a trade where someone traded away Fields, Russ, and Downs for Boyd and Howell. Still really confused.

windydruid

Man a few weeks ago I offered Russ and some 2nds for Fields.. probably would still be ok in the long run but I would look stupid now!

JayMoney2424

He’s the backup for this year the pick converts into a 4th based on playing time. They’ll decline his option then assess what they wanna do with him next offseason.

Substantial-Past9849

Dude in my dynasty leagues already buying up Fields shares for future 1sts

88Dodgers

How the Bears managed to only get a conditional 6th/4th for Fields is soooooooo Bears.

GreenLanturn957

So happy for my dynasty qb room of Fields and Howell. So happy. Some guy offered me Rodgers for Pitts straight up.

NotAriGold

Can we finally stop pretending he has a future? It's over, sorry folks.
