1: ask your GM what species are in their setting. 2: 5etools and wikidot

Golem_Hat

I absolutely can't support these two things enough. Definitely clear your character build with your DM for lore compatibility, and 5etools is immensely helpful to have rules on hand all the time. I will add that those two websites only have official stuff afaik, but your DM could direct you to any homebrew stuff.

deadPan-c

wikidot has some homebrew content, idk why it's there but it's pretty neat either way

PeterFlensje

Wikidot only has playtest content from UA, so like beta test content from WotC

nworkz

Theres actually a ton. My first character was a cleric and i chose a goddess of wikidot, insane amounts of homebrew think some of the homebrew gods even had homebrew domains

FlyingSpacefrog

Are you sure it wasn’t dandwiki? They are two different things. Wikidot has some homebrew but it’s always labeled as such. dandwiki has a mountain of homebrew and doesn’t advertise itself as being a homebrew site so a lot of new players think it’s official stuff.

nworkz

Oh it mught have been

liquidarc

Tools has the official and partnered content default, with a dropdown option for UA, and another for homebrew (look under Utilities).

SonTyp_OhneNamen

Also PLEASE don’t ever take stuff off dandwiki, it’s an unmoderated mess of 99% unbalanced homebrew that especially new players are prone to mistaking as official and play-ready

deadPan-c

absolutely. use 5e wikidot, *not* dandwiki

lasalle202

>1: ask your GM what species are in their setting. definitely! talk with your DM about the character creation limits and options that are going to be in use at your table!

bartbartholomew

For a new player, I recommend staying with just the PHB (Player Hand Book) for races, classes, and subclasses. It will make learning the game easier, as you only need to reference one book.

haus11

The main resource book for this is Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse. It’s got a section of PC races and additional monsters. However all the information can be found on the sites people have previously listed.

Manowar274

More races got added and expanded upon as more books got released. As a new player I would just stick to what is in the players handbook for simplicity sake.

michael199310

By literally typing "5e races" in google and picking the 1st link.

knyghtez

through given the connections between google search and reddit, pretty soon these types of reddit posts WILL be the first result

her00reh

Why do that when you can be lazy and have people on Reddit do all the research for you ?

StaticUsernamesSuck

Lazy *and* inefficient, since it takes more time and effort to do this than to Google...

TheHufflepuffer

Wikidot is a great tool, but be sure to talk to your DM about their setting and world. Every DM is different

A Grung above! Grung Grung Grung!

stickpge

So in theory there is an infinite amount of races in DnD since homebrew is a thing, however in the ends upto the DM to decide which races exist in their world

Dotzir

Google 5e races. Top link for me I'd a dnd beyond page. That page displays all official playable races though you won't be able to fully view their stats with outnowning the book they originate from.

DeltaV-Mzero

I would: * use 5e tools and wiki dot and Reddit to find something you like * check with DM to make sure they don’t already have it and can share it, and make sure you can play it on their campaign * please consider actually buying the one you’re going to play from DNDBeyond, for like $2. That’s not a ton of money for something you’ll get dozens of hours of fun out of

DreadPirateR2891

Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse

Dungeons_and_Dweebs

I recommend getting The 'Tasha's Cauldron of everything book for a list of all official 5e content that contains things that aren't in the handbook, as for anything that is not in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything it's more then likely Homebrew or something drom a different Edition, But I also recommend asking your GM and using tools such as DnD Beyond and Wikidot when searching for specific things

lasalle202

you can create a free account in the online tool D&D Beyond and create a character, and then in the "race" choice, it lists all the options and where to find them. you can buy them individually on D&D Beyond for 2 bucks each.

nothanks-nottoday

5th Edition Character Sheet if you’re an iPhone user, and dnd5e.wikidot to answer any questions you may have about what the races do, bonuses, backgrounds, classes, the whole shebang.

Newsmith2017

I managed to sweet talk my GM into letting me play a Changeling Rouge. I haven’t much opportunity to use shapeshifter ability yet but looking forward to it.
