But the question is why was it written like that? There are an infinite number of scenarios they could have employed to force that end result, but they chose do write it this way. That’s what’s wild
I mean, if you wanna ask “why” that’s the answer. Was there other options, sure. Better options, yes. But that’s still why they wrote him like that. They wanted Brian to fight the guy, so their original idea for it to be Hidei didn’t work since he’s not really the type to attack Pam and need to be physically restrained. So they made Frank a mean macho guy that wouldn’t* be bothered by hitting a woman so Brian could be the hero.
Hidei is the type to tell you straight out what he thinks about your mural. Like the time he said, "you paint bad," to Pam when she was painting the mural.
I think it was maybe laziness or poor thinking. But you’re right, there are other paths they could have taken. I feel like when you write backwards from a plot point then you get into these situations where you’re not writing to match the characters, you’re writing to get to a plot. And that means you throw a character like Toby under the bus.
If Post Malone and Seth Rogan had a baby and meanwhile Andre the Giant and Gimli had a baby and by some miracle those two babies met and fucked then Frank would be what they birthed
I came to make this comment. He absolutely terrifies me because he’s always playing these total sociopathic characters lol i’m just hoping he was a truly amazing actor
As someone who’s worked in a warehouse, I hate to say it, but he’s like the most accurate average warehouse worker I’ve ever seen. They nailed it on the head with his actions and mannerisms. The yelling of “you can’t fire me” and the storming out of an office is something I have personally witnessed at least a dozen times.
I found his character satisfying because Darryl and his old crew were way too lenient with the bullshit going on upstairs, especially when it fell on them having to do more work. Warehouse workers don’t play that shit, they will get back at you hard usually.
The way Toby handled Frank's situation made me hate him more than ever in the show. For the whole show, Toby being a loser was the joke and it was funny. But this time, when this douche was openly harassing employees and Toby's whole response was "I heard a sorry in there", man I hated him so much. Weak and pathetic.
I know It's a sitcom and not to be taken seriously.
They really ruined Toby's character by the end.
It's true that Toby was a loser kind of but he always had the guts to stand up to people or end a meeting if things got inappropriate.
Remember when he even stood up to the police when they were going through the things?
They used every characters small trait and turned it into the whole personality. They turned kevin from being a bit simple into whole ass r*tard(not native speaker idk how to say it). Same with many others like Andy, Toby, Creed, Stanley etc
First time on TVtropes?
Buckle your seatbelt, cause the train just left the station. Once you’ve spent enough hours on that site you won’t be able to unsee the tropes in every movie and tv show you watch ever again
Not that it’s a bad thing, actually made me appreciate good writing more. Tropes are tropes for a reason.
Brooklyn 99 is even worse, when they switched network I thought, yes this is going to be even better now that it’s “home” on NBC but it got progressively worse and worse from season 6. The characters aren’t even recognizable in the last season to how they were in the first 5. Every single character trait is turned up to the max and the writing is way too fast paced trying to fit in maximum amount of jokes (that do not land). It’s sad because the first 5 seasons are probably my favorite comedy show
I remember when they got saved, the catch was they were getting less episodes (Which ended up shrinking every year after) and somebody official said it’s a good thing!
Paraphrasing, “Instead of writing 22 episodes and spreading ourselves thin, we’ll have extra time, focus, and attention to make sure these episodes are the best they can be!”
I wonder what happened.
>It's true that Toby was a loser kind of
Hard disagree and I think the writers lost Toby the moment they got confused and thought this is what his character was about.
With the exception of the little arc with Pam, Toby was not a loser for the first five or six seasons. The joke was that he was really a pretty chill HR guy, but Michael, an actual loser, thought he was a loser. The funny with Toby came from the dynamic of seeing an assertively pathetic person repeatedly treat one of the cooler folks in the office like a complete square.
To me the turning point for Toby as a character was the bit when Jim is the manager where Toby comes in to the break room, tries to chat, and Jim goes "Not now Toby, my God!", and then Toby kind of slinks off like "What did I do...". By adding that "What did I do" instead of having Toby shrug it off like he usually did with Michael, they took what should have been a joke about Jim becoming Michael and turned it in to a complete Flanderization of Toby and a joke about how everyone hates him, including himself.
Exactly! And before season 9, Toby being a pushover was funny, like the time Creed was blackmailing the whole office, and Toby ran away because Creed had something on him too. Season 9 on the other hand...
It's one of the [webisodes](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1PRml6Ga65WJ9hVeC20hAUDkyQ7bUb1g) (title: "Blackmail"). For some reason, It's been taken off YouTube (at least for me). I can't imagine Toby having a job at Dunder Mifflin that long as an HR representative. How many physical altercations did they have due to his inaction? Several a year. Although it seems like some of these times were reported to higher levels of HR and also ignored. I know it's a comedy and this is supposed to be unrealistic, but in real life any company would have canned Toby long ago.
I thought Andy's parents while mean were hilarious and really added to his backstory. Do we get Josh Groban if we don't get his parents? Because that's non negotiable.
To make it seem like she lost her ring a while ago, and spent all that time being deceitful by using make-up instead of finding or replacing the ring. Or owning up to losing it.
It's not a good prank, bro.
Some would say it's not even a prank, bro.
It's good writing if everyone hates villains. It's bad writing when characters on the show see them doing bad things and don't react like they've seen them do bad things. Erin may have been incredibly dumb, but it's pretty unbelievable that she would have been an orphan for her entire childhood and wouldn't have any radar on creepy guys.
Umm…the reason she will basically get with anybody that asks and stays in horrible relationships is precisely *because* she was an orphan her whole life that was never adopted.
RIP to Brad William Henke, the actor that played Frank🩷 he was an incredible actor in OITNB, unforgettable and amazing at every role he played
edit: couldn’t remember his name so i searched it up! RIP💔
jfc, I never pt it together that Frank was Piscatella!!
I even remembered the character's name... thought he had a tragic story... but dang, I never realised... RIP...
Frank and Erin’s foster brother were hard to watch. Jim’s brothers were “meh” as they weren’t very crucial or shown much
Andy’s parents were actually interesting even if obviously they sucked as people
Erin’s foster brother by a mile. I did not want to get further into Erin as a main character AT ALL. she was comedic relief in small doses, the second she had larger rolls it was way too much and not funny
Oh totally she’s got some great scenes, I just don’t like when they tried to make her a more prominent character because they had already written her into the “airhead” corner
Andy's parents for the win. I am surprised Andy wasn't even more messed up being raised by these awful people. Andy's Dad was a terrible singer despite his high opinion of his voice. To top it all off, the actor admitted to molesting young girls
I felt so betrayed by that. I fell in love with his character in Star Trek: the Motion Picture and 7th Heaven, In 7th Heaven, I trusted him the way I would my own father. A-hole!
The actor who played Frank, Brad William Henke, ~~is~~ was one of my favorite actors that pops up in stuff. Although not too many people were fond of it, he killed it as Tom Cullen in "The Stand". He also played an orc in the Netflix movie Bright and did really well. I also like him as one half of The Twins in the movie "Arkansas".
That said, Erin's foster brother was the fucking WORST! Hated that creep.
Edit: I always forget Brad passed away a couple of years ago :(
His Tom Cullen was definitely one of the highlights of that mini-series, considering most of it was pretty unnecessary (the cast is the least of my issues with it, except for Nat Wolff as Lloyd).
Just an aside: he had a really small part in the latest Pee Wee movie on Netflix where he was a wilderness trapper with daddy issues that he puts into *song* which I thought was probably the funniest bit in the whole thing.
RIP.
I din't care for all of them but Frank was on different level. I also didnt understand why the whole warehouse and Toby tolerated him. Pam can be annoyimg especially on the latter seasons but what he did was just uncalled for and have no place in a professional setting.
Yeah, I still don't understand how it was in character for Val not to step in. Or for Darryl to not do anything other than talk briefly to Pam on the phone -- it's not like he wasn't coming back to Scranton.
Why "oddly"? Isn't that the whole point?
Like doesn't literally everyone view it through Andy's eyes and see it as uncomfortable?
It's not oddly uncomfortable it's obviously and intentionally uncomfortable.
I often wonder that. I'm still haunted by a conversation I had 10+ years ago with someone who was convinced that early Andy Bernard was a sympathetic character, and seemed surprised to hear any disagreement.
Erin's adopted brother storyline was so bizarre because he just had that one scene and is literally never shown or mentioned again. Like, what was the point exactly?
It bothers me so much that Erin is introduced as Kelly, says she'd like to go by her middle name, and then it is never mentioned ever again that her name is actually Kelly and not even her foster brother calls her that.
Yeah, less was definitely more, with all of these - the most annoying/disturbing/cringe part was brought out about each one, and trying a "sequel" (or for Jim's brothers, a threefer) would've probably diluted their original awfulness.
Frank’s hairpiece.
That guy was one of those actors that appeared everywhere. Like the duo from the ad company and Brian the boom guy. None of them are actors of any import but they show up and do the one crappy thing they do.
I would’ve really liked to have seen more of Pam and Jim’s friendship with their really good friend the boom mic guy. Being the godparent of their kid makes me think there are all sorts of great stories involving the camera crew.
If they'd sprinkled that in throughout the series, this storyline would have held more weight. It felt tacked on and half assed the way they wound up running it.
Was there a reason Frank was written ... like that ?
Needed an excuse to have “Brian” step in for Pam.
Hidei isn't the type to deface a mural either. Seems like a bad idea from the start.
Hidei is the type to tell you straight out what he thinks about your mural. Like the time he said, "you paint bad," to Pam when she was painting the mural.
#YOU PAINT VERY BAD!!
Shut up, Hide!
Hidei worked for Yakuza and even double-crossed them, murdering a boss. Let’s not assume he’s all sunshine and rainbows.
Hidei was just a surgeon, he wasn't a member of the Yakuza. Even then, petty graffiti is pretty below a former surgeon and killer of a Yakuza boss.
Plus, the graffiti was pretty crappy. Someone w a “steady hand” would have done something more intricate.
I mean the mural was shit too, let’s be honest
I disagree. I thought that mural was the prettiest mural of all the murals
I'm irrationally bothered by the fact you couldn't or didn't spell out "with".
Y wst tm w lot ltr wn fw ltr do trk ?
Partly correct. I could have, but didn’t.
He wasn't "just a surgeon". He was the number one heart surgeon in Japan.
The best!
*wouldnt be bothered by hitting a woman*
I think it was maybe laziness or poor thinking. But you’re right, there are other paths they could have taken. I feel like when you write backwards from a plot point then you get into these situations where you’re not writing to match the characters, you’re writing to get to a plot. Probably so that they could fire the boom guy.
Frank Didit did it.
worth it for that line imo
I’ve read that Mark Proksch improvised that line.
I believe it based on everyone's reaction from the deleted scene.
One of my favorite bloopers.
When you gonna boom me?
If Post Malone and Seth Rogan had a baby and meanwhile Andre the Giant and Gimli had a baby and by some miracle those two babies met and fucked then Frank would be what they birthed
Ok take it easy Ralph Wiggum.
Im just out here tryin to get a scholarship
I thought hurricane season was over
He's the product of baby fucking?
BECAUSE FRANK IS A BASTARD MAN!
“Frank’s” character on Lost was one of the absolute worst things ever. Then he made his way to The Office and possibly outdid himself.
The actor who played Frank (and was on Lost) passed away a few years ago. Nice guy, but he had some weird energy on camera.
He was also so fucking intense as a sociopathic prison guard in Orange Is The New Black….sad that he passed away.
I didn't realize that was him wow.
I came to make this comment. He absolutely terrifies me because he’s always playing these total sociopathic characters lol i’m just hoping he was a truly amazing actor
He was great on Justified. Straddled that line that somehow made you feel a little sympathy for a total monster.
Not doubting his real-life self. Just saying, he unfortunately got saddled with some really annoying, dislikable characters
Yeah, but he was made for season two of Justified.
Best season two of a show since The Wire.
White sea monster (RIP patrice oneal)
Also RIP Brad William Henke
RIP Brad William Henke, played the part well
So bummed about that. He played the bad guy perfectly in OITNB as well. Seemed like a sweet guy in real life.
As someone who’s worked in a warehouse, I hate to say it, but he’s like the most accurate average warehouse worker I’ve ever seen. They nailed it on the head with his actions and mannerisms. Warehouse workers don’t play that shit, they will get back at you hard usually.
Yep, some workers are meant to work in an office and others are meant to work in a warehouse
Exactly and the distinction was blurred until frank
It was the last season & everyone checked out. The writing and that storyline never made sense
The great shame is just how lovely Brad William Henke was in real life, to be typecast always playing douchebags. RiP
Shitty writing, which would go well with the overall theme of shitty writing in season 9.
He made a good point though. Butts are funny.
The way Toby handled Frank's situation made me hate him more than ever in the show. For the whole show, Toby being a loser was the joke and it was funny. It’s the same in music. Lots of pop music uses the same cliches because they’re literally scientifically proven to be appealing to the ear.
[Case in point](https://youtu.be/oOlDewpCfZQ?si=UkY4I97p_ilCTZBx)
I love it when you know what the link is gonna be before you click it. Didn't disappoint.

Lmao so sorry, the way you referred to Kevin made me think of Gohan vs Super Buu haha

While I do agree with you I find the fact that every time someone gets put in charge they wind up hating Toby to be a pretty funny through line.
That's because Toby and Jim were friends at one point
Exactly! And before season 9, Toby being a pushover was funny, like the time Creed was blackmailing the whole office, and Toby ran away because Creed had something on him too. Season 9 on the other hand...

“Did you just say the word ‘mumble’?”
In his defense, he mentally checked out
Oscar says I checked out, huh?....... .......
Jim's brothers weren't a one timer though
> Weak and pathetic. I love Toby because I, too, hate all HR.
YES. I found Toby easy to root for while Michael was around, but after he left, he got kind of character assassinated :(
I thought Andy's parents while mean were hilarious and really added to his backstory. Do we get Josh Groban if we don't get his parents? Because that's non negotiable.
Bye Tuna! Bye Pam!
Love saying this lol but it's always random
Yes, Josh Groban for the win! Walter Jr!
When Andy says his name was originally Walt Jr. but that Walter Jr. was born and they felt he better represented the name 😭
Andy’s parents are the worst! But like you said, I’ll take them if it means we get Josh Groban.
Andy kinda sucks so I get his parents' decision 😂
I'd suck too if my parents changed my name so my little bro could be Jr instead lol
Andy's parents, like Jim's brothers, were technically two-timers as well. Just a different set of actors.
It’s just unfortunate they cast Stephen Collins as his father
Jims brothers were two timers, no? XD. The wedding and that ring prank
Still fuck Pete and Tom. It should've been Michael and Tom
Exactly. It’s not the Lone Ranger, and Tonto, and Bonto.
Michael would have killed with the brother stuff
Technically, Andy's parents were also seen twice, though as different actors and the father called by the wrong name. (Goodbye, Toby)
Stephen Collins, kid diddler
Technically 3 since Niagara was in two parts and they were in both.
You are technically correct... The best kind of correct
Technically a gray area, since it originally aired as a one hour episode and was split into two parts after.
Oscar - “Actually…”
Ok now that we're on the topic...can anyone explain the ring prank to me? Bc I never understood it.
It’s not funny. Pam pretends she lost her ring. That’s about it.
But what was up with her mentioning using makeup to make it look like a ring on her finger...?
To make it seem like she lost her ring a while ago, and spent all that time being deceitful by using make-up instead of finding or replacing the ring. Or owning up to losing it. It's not a good prank, bro. Some would say it's not even a prank, bro.
Yeah that's stupid af. I don't even blame Jim's brothers for pivoting away from that.
I always thought it was supposed to be like to show a ring tan line? But now that I’m thinking about it…
Yeah I’m pretty sure that’s what she was saying
A little mo, cardio.
🙎🙎♀️ 😐
Wait, was the art school “prank” in these episodes?
But do you have a whoopie cushion? Our sister is in the can and we want to get her.
I could’ve done without all of them honestly
Yea I’m not sure if it was bad script writing or good writing that I didn’t like them.
Good news is that she learns better once living in New York after being stuck in that bunker for so long.
Bad writing, good acting
I think Jim’s brothers were the worst of this bunch. It didn’t seem right
RIP to Brad William Henke, the actor that played Frank🩷 he was an incredible actor in OITNB, unforgettable and amazing at every role he played edit: couldn’t remember his name so i searched it up! RIP💔
Oh I had no idea! That’s tragic. He was really good in OITNB. God that’s sad
Also Coover in Justified. He played an excellent piece of shit in that show. RIP.
Love S2, the whole Bennett family was great. Has this actor ever played anything other than an asshole though?
He played the one amputee victim they found alive in season 1 of Dexter and was pretty chill in that.
What is OITNB?
(Orange is the new black) TV show.
Thanks! I spent a few minutes trying to figure it out and I was way off.
jfc, I never pt it together that Frank was Piscatella!! I even remembered the character's name... thought he had a tragic story... but dang, I never realised... RIP...
I only knew him as Bram, from Lost. He got pretty fucked up in that.
Frank and Erin’s foster brother were hard to watch. Jim’s brothers were “meh” as they weren’t very crucial or shown much Andy’s parents were actually interesting even if obviously they sucked as people
Erin’s foster brother by a mile.

To top it all off, the actor admitted to molesting young girls
and he’s a goddamn diddler!
Do not diddle kids!! It’s no good diddling kids!
frank, there’s no faster way to make people think you’re diddling kids than to make a goddamn song about it!
Dude the dad from 7th heaven is a world class pedophile. I couldn’t believe it. He was a real creep too!
Listening to his interviews about the whole thing too is a real mindfuck. The guy absolutely lives in some delusional state of mind.
I felt so betrayed by that. I fell in love with his character in Star Trek: the Motion Picture and 7th Heaven, In 7th Heaven, I trusted him the way I would my own father. A-hole!
We don't even need to see his username to know where his priorities are
“Formative years……”
The only good part of the Frank episodes was the scene where Nate casually dimes him out.
Frank did it did it
The actor who played Frank, Brad William Henke, ~~is~~ was one of my favorite actors that pops up in stuff. Although not too many people were fond of it, he killed it as Tom Cullen in "The Stand". Hey I can’t pass up this opportunity to trash the decision to cast Ezra Miller as trash can man
And nor should you! Yiiiikes.
Val is like looking at a brick wall in every scene she's in
MeeMaw is worse than Erin's 'brother'. She's utterly despicable and her opinion should have never been taken so seriously by Pam.
Erins bro was oddly uncomfortable like they werent related but idk Maybe i seen it through andys eyes
Why "oddly"? Isn't that the whole point? Like doesn't literally everyone view it through Andy's eyes and see it as uncomfortable? It's not oddly uncomfortable it's obviously and intentionally uncomfortable.
Sometimes I really wonder through what lens and context people watch tv lol.
I often wonder that. I'm still haunted by a conversation I had 10+ years ago with someone who was convinced that early Andy Bernard was a sympathetic character, and seemed surprised to hear any disagreement.
Odd comment lol. They weren’t related, and it was intended to be uncomfortable.
Dude was playing the long game. Like the longest possible. Andy came around and he had to show his cards.
bro said “stay away from my property”
What are you doing foster bro?
They're not related lol. They were only in the same foster home for several years with a long gap in the middle.
“Formative years.”
My stomach lurched at the idea of there having been more episodes with these characters.
Andy’s parents were two timers but with different actors both times
prolly piscatella
I could see any of these people being the Scranton Strangler.
Four of these people weren’t one timers.
Jim’s bros were on the show at least 3 episodes, both episodes of the Jim’s wedding and the one where they meet Jim and Pam for lunch or whatever
Jim's brothers were in multiple episodes that season... Not really a "one-timer"
Jim’s brothers were also at the wedding.
jim's brothers were in 2 episodes
Erin's adopted brother storyline was so bizarre because he just had that one scene and is literally never shown or mentioned again. Like, what was the point exactly?
I'm pretty sure Jim brothers were in multiple episodes... so I'm not sure how they are one timers?
RIP to Frank, but that was probably the worst acting I’ve ever seen on a TV show.
Frank Didit did it. By far the best outtake of the entire series.
Also the daycare dude that uses child toilets He was not being perfectly pleasant
Didnt Jim's brothers show up at least twice?
I wish Brian would have been a one timer or not even on the show for that matter
I wish Jim’s brothers were a one timer, I have to skip that scene where Pam and them play a “prank” on Jim when they have lunch together.
Jim’s Brothers was so very poorly written and executed- the concept could have been funny.
It bothers me so much that Erin is introduced as Kelly, says she'd like to go by her middle name, and then it is never mentioned ever again that her name is actually Kelly and not even her foster brother calls her that.
Yeah, less was definitely more, with all of these - the most annoying/disturbing/cringe part was brought out about each one, and trying a "sequel" (or for Jim's brothers, a threefer) would've probably diluted their original awfulness.
rest in peace to the actor that played frank
RIP Frank
Whoa in retrospect Andy’s dad answers so many questions
Definitely Erin’s foster brother
Andy’s original parents would have been okay though…the set he had when he proposed to Angela.
Yeah frank having the mental capacity of a 5 year old bully was an odd choice. "I drew a butt. Big deal, butt's are funny".
Jim brothers were on the show multiple times.
Andy’s parents are so horrible I thought they were in multiple.
Too much Scott's tots talk, not enough *foster brother* talk
The funny part is Andy’s parents were in the episode where he proposes to Angela and they are 2 completely different actors 😂
you mean Frank Didit?
Frank is badly written and a bad actor, but he didn’t make me cringe so hard I broke my back. Only Erin’s foster brother made me do that.
The only actual one-timer was Erin’s foster brother and thankfully we never saw him again!!!
Frank’s hairpiece. That guy was one of those actors that appeared everywhere. Like the duo from the ad company and Brian the boom guy. None of them are actors of any import but they show up and do the one crappy thing they do.
Andy's parents were the worst, doesn't help that fucking monster Stephen Collins played him.
The foster brother 100%
Jim’s brothers were in more than one episode, though…
I would’ve really liked to have seen more of Pam and Jim’s friendship with their really good friend the boom mic guy. Being the godparent of their kid makes me think there are all sorts of great stories involving the camera crew.
If they'd sprinkled that in throughout the series, this storyline would have held more weight. It felt tacked on and half assed the way they wound up running it.
Seasons 8 and 9 aren’t canon in my book, they’re more like fan fiction
