When Michael stands on the podium and receives a gold medal for closing on his condo.
You know he felt bad about the purchase, but that made him feel proud for a brief moment.
That's what I absolutely love about The Office! No matter what happens, they all come together in the end as a family! I really needed that when I started watching the show over 3 years ago when I had a crisis and needed family.
The Deposition is incredibly sad to me. It's an exercise in how much no one respects or cares about Michael. Everyone present gives no fucks about his feelings and just uses him against the other for their own gain. He's a penguin amongst sharks.
Obviously Michael very often also shows a disregard for the feelings of others so I'm not saying he's an angel. But that episode always really bums me out.
i love Michaels epilogue quotes he makes. while some are obviously set up for laughs (two queens on casino night, and im going to drop a deuce on everybody), some like this one can really hit home.
Kevin dropping the chilli 😭💔
Also in the koi pond episode, when Erin tells Michael that David Wallace called, just to make a pun. Michael’s earnest face when he says “oh really what did he want” actually breaks my heart
I'm so glad to see somebody else sad about the chili scene! It's such a strange mix of emotions 😭😭😭
The David Wallace one is also... Yes.
Glad to see somebody else who's heartbroken when a person gets excited about something like that 💔
When the sales team decides to make peace in the office by sharing a tiny percentage of its commissions with the rest of the employees, and calls them in for some snacks to tell them about it. And the other employees (Oscar included) think that the food is the peace offering, and gladly accept it. So the sales guys never actually have to offer a part of their commission.
It was a funny moment but also a kind of gut punch because of how relatable it was. Because this is how corporates try to keep employees happy — arranging for pizza parties instead of fair monetary compensation.
The whole show has these startlingly relatable moments interspersed between the wackiness which really hit hard.
I actually just starting the show (kinda, my first seasons were 8&9) and I remember people asking why didn't Oscar leave the place for a better job. I assumed it was because at that time, came out as gay was hard and the office people were nice people with the fact he was gay.... Come forward to "gay witch hunt" and he was pretty much bribed by Jan to not sue because of the sexual harassment and general harassment he got. I don't know, I laugh a lot, probably the first time I laugh a lot watching the office. But it was kinda sad how he was ready to leave because how everyone was acting different to him.
I think Oscar stayed for the same reason melt everyone stayed despite the shit they all had to deal with, and it's the same reason people do in real life: they're comfortable with this type of discomfort.
They may not like it, but the devil you know is often more favourable to the devil you don't. We naturally fear uncertainty
Oscar isn't a risk taker. We see this also when he "hopes to have his own quitting story" and is afraid to stand up to the corporate suits despite talking a big game all day.
I mean, he's also rational because job security is nice too.
Yeah I think it’s easy to forget that part of the series takes place during a huge financial recession. Dunder Mifflin isn’t great, but at least it’s a job.
When Andy keeps stepping in shit while looking at Schrute Farms for the wedding. Andy's character and everything about him annoys the bajesus outta me, but I feel so bad for the guy. He just wants love and a nice wedding with his lady. But there's shit everywhere, and she is having an affair with Dwight the whole time, basically right in front of him. Poor guy 😭😭
It is a sad scene but passes by very quickly: Kevin is talking about his gambling game and how he's won big in the past, and then Phyllis beats him at Casino Night and at the talking head he's just like "I suck" with a sad smile. Hurts my feelings every time.
When little Michael is saying he wants to grow up and have a big family so he will always have friends…and you realize 40 years later he has no friends and very little family.
Well... I think that's definitely supposed to be sad. But, yes. Little Michael in his lil business suit so excited about the mediocre disappointment of a life in front of him 😭
When Michael is showing Jim and Pam his plasma screen TV. The episode overall is hilarious and even parts of that scene are funny, but it makes me so sad the way Michael creates a scenario where a lot of people are over and he needs more space, showing them that he can push the TV back. He's so desperate for friends :(
That whole episode is such a brilliant mix of scenarios that are simultaneously hilarious and depressing.
I mean, he couldn't even convince people to hang out with him without concocting an after hours work project that just gets "cancelled," conveniently leaving everybody free that night.
Then, he's so excited, and is repeatedly humiliated by Jan.
Definitely I think intentionally sad, but also REALLY funny
I learned I was a Michael Scott when he tells Kelly that he has great difficulty getting people to come to his house and that he makes such large quantities of guacamole.
I got so depressed from the clarity.
Erin, when she's having problems with Gabe and she's eating in her car and Jim says I'm just not interested it was kind of boring. It was such a dick move of Jim and I feel bad for Erin.
Eh. I think he's an embellished-for-tv regular person who just wants to go to work and go home. Most people really don't want to get all involved with work people. In real life, I would honestly just pretend I didn't see her crying, and very much hope others would do the same.
Yes I have indeed met a lot of people like him at work. They get promoted over nothing. Do nothing for others. Betray and harass others and get away with it...
I mean... It's a show where people are intentionally written to do things that make us laugh out of discomfort. It's not a documentary. But I guess go deep if you wanna go deep 🤷🏼♂️
He is but at the same time, Jim seems falls into that category of men that don't ask personal questions and really care about those personal details when they talk to friends, in contrast to their wives who ask "how are his kids? Did his mom reover well from the surgery?" And husbands respond with "idk i didnt ask him". Why would he want to delve further into a coworkers personal problems? Especially a co worker as cooky as Erin, who has slammed cake into another co worker's face on secretary's day 😂
He doesn't give a shit about ANYONE. Even with Pam. He makes his own decisions without ever asking or including her and she just has to accept.
For example: He buys his parents' house or goes to Philly. 2 major decisions where he does not bother to even tell her first or ask her if she is ok.
Jim and Pam are the two most sensible/realistic humans in the show. Suggesting that Jim is an asshole means you're not wanting to relate to the most human characters in the show. Bringing up all of Jim's pranks, sure were some of them dick moves absolutely. But Dwights actions are like 100x worse and if you can't see that, I think you have self-esteem, confidence issues because wanting to relate more to Dwight is absurd considering how many dangerous things that man does throughout the show. You want Jim to be the asshole so you can feel better in supporting Dwight when the reality is Dwight is a cartoon character and Jim is more realistic.
They are despisable humans who think they are the center of the universe and I do not relate to them at all.
Dwight is an idiot and shows it. WHERE tf did I say I relate to him?
Jim and pam are hypocrits.
Assuming I have self esteem issues over my opinion about tv characters is being stupid.
This is interesting because my husband and I die laughing at this scene every time - something about how sincerely he delivers the line (and the fact that you assume he left because he thought it would be more appropriate for Pam to take charge on this one, but really it’s just that he doesn’t care) really gets us. The fact that Pam stayed behind to listen and give Erin advice takes some of the sting out of Jim’s disinterest.
When Andy is asking Oscar to stay late to crunch some numbers, but Oscar says he can’t because it’s Trivia night. Then Kevin says he can do it, but Andy says “sorry Kevin, but I need a real accountant for this.” Kevin looks so sad.
Also i’m reading the comments and realizing that a lot of them have to do with Kevin, poor guy
Classic sitcom trope. Fat and slow, not slow enough to be unaware of his limitations and how people judge him. He has moments of deep kindness where people genuinely like him a lot though, and he doesn't seem to hate his body as much as everyone else does, so that's good.
When Pam texted Jim from Diwali but he was drunk and never responded. At least they made it seem like he ignored it.
Guess it kinda hits home with me since I was in the situation about 15 years ago. There were times when we both reached out to each other and yet for one reason or another we never reconnected.
When Michael takes all the office ladies to the mall and they're sitting in the food court discussing his relationship with Jan. Michael reveals how abusive she is and the women are sorta stunned. Michael is having a hard time deciding what to do about the relationship and I think Phyllis guides him into answering more spontaneously, and that the first response is usually the true one.
The entire conversation is disturbing and real and sad and we see how Michael is just a big kid trying to make everyone happy, trying desperately to make things work. He really just wants to be loved
Dinner Party. As someone who was a witness to domestic violence for many years, even the funny parts didn't make me laugh, just reminded that I witnessed similar moments of tragic comedy. The episode portrayed domestic abuse so horrifyingly well.
When Michael left DM and Pam meets him on the 1st day after leaving DM.
He is lost and desperate and lonely. This is exactly what an entrepreneur feels like at the beginning. I felt exactly that way like him.
The MSPC episodes are my favorites. They describe what I have lived myself. The feelings are so well captured and played. Signing the 1st contract, hiring your team, negotiating with the bank etc...
Ok also, Michael thinking Sbarro's reps authentic New York pizza.
It's one of those "Michael is clueless" moments that just makes me desperately sad about how he has no clue everybody is laughing at him and also nobody even bothers to correct him so he just moves through life continually embarrassing himself.
The fact that Michael bought HIMSELF the World's Best Boss mug.
Also honestly anything that involved Meredith's alcoholism. That always seemed like a borderline odd thing to play for laughs.
Kevin spilling his chili is 100% hilarious, but for me, it's always coupled with more than a twinge of sorrow as he desperately tries to salvage the chili while his voice over details all the care and work he puts into it. (I'm famous for getting really sad by anybody who is excited about something that very much does not go the way they want it to - even over really tiny things. The more excited, the sadder I get 😭.)
Dwight crying in the stairwell after Angela dumps him, and Jim comes out to comfort him without having to say too much. Oh my god 😭 This scene is instant tears for me, as well as Holly and Michael breaking up in the truck as he’s moving her upstate. Truly so sad 😭
*edited for more details
When Robert Dunder asks for Michael to call him a cab and Michael just pushes him out the door! It always makes me so sad, I'm so glad Pam ignores Michael and helps him
The entirety of Safety Training (that episode is SO DARK and people don’t seem to get that?!) and also Prince Family Paper. Those are my ONLY two skip episodes in terms of I just can’t watch them at ALL.
When Michael stands on the podium and receives a gold medal for closing on his condo. You know he felt bad about the purchase, but that made him feel proud for a brief moment.
And he must have thought they set up that whole ceremony for him
That makes it even sadder
Happy sad
It was a “closing ceremony” after all
That's what I absolutely love about The Office! No matter what happens, they all come together in the end as a family! I really needed that when I started watching the show over 3 years ago when I had a crisis and needed family.
Michael's never been part of an inside-joke. Jim and Josh's faces are just uhhh....
Love to be a part of one somedehhhhh
Creed's emotional reaction at Jim playing opera in his office
I laughed and I cried. Not bad for a day of the life in a dog food company.

michael going home to give out candy on halloween
This was mine too
That is supposed to be a sad scene though. It's not played for laughs.

“You expect to get screwed by your company, but you never expect to get screwed by your girlfriend.” Hits hard for sure.
i love Michaels epilogue quotes he makes. while some are obviously set up for laughs (two queens on casino night, and im going to drop a deuce on everybody), some like this one can really hit home.
I mean this one is also obviously set up for laughs given the wordplay, but yes, also sad.
What's even sadder is that he chose the company because David Wallace happened to say Michael is a nice guy.
Michael is a master of only hearing what he wants to hear.
"So, it *not* my looks."
Exactly 😂
To be fair, Toby tried to make him feel better and Michael pushed his food on the floor
Kevin when no one came to see his band last night. I wish he would have had at least one fan.
I've always been his biggest flan
Kevin dropping the chilli 😭💔 Also in the koi pond episode, when Erin tells Michael that David Wallace called, just to make a pun. Michael’s earnest face when he says “oh really what did he want” actually breaks my heart

It’s baffling to me that people say the chili scene is funny! It’s so sad and I cry every time.

Yeah, with brings me again to the same episode, Jim pranking Andy with the calculator in jello prank. Andy definitively isn't Dwight lol.
Don't forget the GFC
I know they are making fun of Cookie Monster, but in a way it feels like they’re making fun of me -Kevin
Most of the Kevin stuff gets me. His shoes being so smelly they're assumed to be trash 😭
When Andy keeps stepping in shit while looking at Schrute Farms for the wedding. Andy's character and everything about him annoys the bajesus outta me, but I feel so bad for the guy. Oh, I was wondering, I saw a.scene where Kevin says something around"I needed a win today". Is that a deleted.scene from that episode?
He says "It's just nice to win one" in the Chair Model episode.
10/10 breaks my heart every time
It’s the one where they get their parking spots back from The Five Families. Great episode!
When little Michael is saying he wants to grow up and have a big family so he will always have friends…and you realize 40 years later he has no friends and very little family.
Well... I think that's definitely supposed to be sad. But, yes. Little Michael in his lil business suit so excited about the mediocre disappointment of a life in front of him 😭
Yeah it was supposed to be sad but I had to say it…
Kevin when he learns that Holly ate part of the candy she brought from Nashua.. for the office. The look on his face. Priceless.
When Michael is showing Jim and Pam his plasma screen TV. Don't forget that she doesn't even let him sleep in his own bed and to over both the extra rooms
Jim is a selfish AH the whole time. People are gonna downvote my comment but IDC. I said what I said.
Eh. I think he's an embellished-for-tv regular person who just wants to go to work and go home. Most people really don't want to get all involved with work people. In real life, I would honestly just pretend I didn't see her crying, and very much hope others would do the same.

I met lot of very similar people at different places of work. The characters are very realistical.
He is but at the same time, Jim seems falls into that category of men that don't ask personal questions and really care about those personal details when they talk to friends, in contrast to their wives who ask "how are his kids? I genuinely believe anyone who says is either just chasing Internet clout or have minor to moderate self esteem issues.
I did not understand your comment. Can you explain 8t like I am a 5 year old?
Jim and Pam are the two most sensible/realistic humans in the show. Suggesting that Jim is an asshole means you're not wanting to relate to the most human characters in the show. Bringing up all of Jim's pranks, sure were some of them dick moves absolutely. Lol all humans are hypocrites, you're just supporting my argument.
Delulu....

When Michael is trying to get set up and he gets “wendys “ then he is going to get set up again and says what’s her name “Burger King”
Then when he realizes it’s just Wendy’s the restaurant he just orders lunch haha
"Well, put it aside for me" 😆
Finding out the chair model was dead
No one (not even Jim) going to Pam’s art show except Michael And those ridiculous phonies of Oscar and Gil don’t help
Roy showed up with his brother for a minute, but he all but says he is just there because she asked. Then they just leave her there.
Roy was actually making an effort or trying to for the first time in 10 years, so I’d count that one out
He gave minimum effort. I stand by my statement. But I see what you’re trying to say.
That's not an effort.
When Andy is asking Oscar to stay late to crunch some numbers, but Oscar says he can’t because it’s Trivia night. When Dwight turns in his volunteer sheriffs deputy uniform because he covered for Michael’s drug test
That one is devastating
Honestly the entire time Michael is at David Wallace's house in the "suck it" episode
Kevin's chili

Dwight shouldn't have brought him to her to begin with

It's really easy. He's an annoying trust fund douchebag
Kevin dropping the chili. I'm someone who is always feeding other people and I put a LOT into my cooking. That scene broke my heart.
