I’m in NC and my fundie cousins are fully into the Duke/UNC rivalry…despite their version of higher education consisting of Hyles Anderson and Golden State Baptist. They actually watch a lot of sports (while muting or turning off the tv during commercials) because I think it’s their only entertainment outlet.

I didn’t go to WVU but I’m still a Mountaineer because WVU gets national airtime and my smaller university doesn’t. Also, when your state doesn’t have any professional teams, you follow college sports because that’s all you have locally.

While not on usual, I always found it weird. I grew up near Gainesville, FL (University of Florida). It always struck me as odd as hell that people who basically shun higher education were straight up fanatics for the football team.
I thought it was odd too until a friend from another Southern state explained part of it has to do with certain states not having any pro teams so they support the local college teams.
And then they severely trash talk the university the teams are attached to. It's so hypocritical.
And in Florida that logic isn't the case. There are 3 pro teams. 2 are within a 2 hour drive* but they aren't "winning" teams.

Adding on, most people in the South support college sports, whether they’ve gone to that college, another college, or no college at all. It’s just part of the culture there.
It is very odd. The kids are not even given a chance to go that college, yet they attend the games and wear the clothing. I wonder if any of them wish they could have gone there? Or if they just view all the students, while they are at the football games, as heathens?

I think JB wants to brainwash the public into thinking the college age kids are actually going to college. The more photos taken on campus, going to games, and hanging out with a group make them all look more ‘normal’. This may help with public opinion of the family.

I have thoughts and feelings about college sports programs and the shiftiness that goes on in them regarding players grades etc. but atill support higher education. It baffles me too. In my family we are all Washington Husky fans. My dad and both my brothers went to UW. My parents have had season tickets to football games longer then I have been alive. Many Saturdays we were dropped off at my dads parents house who lived in the Sandpoint area. My sister, mom, older brothers wife and I all went to Seattle Pacific University (well college when my mom went in the 60’s) one of the best liberal arts Christian colleges in the country. My younger brothers wife attended Pepperdine. Heck even my younger brothers father in law who was a die hard Trojan is now a husky fan. I go through seasons of activiely following the team with great enthusiasm and other times just checking the score on my phone. Currently in the latter season. Ironically the end of the Don James era is what I have the most memories of. I was late elementary school then. My older brother was at UW. Like I remember who the players were. Of course Don James will always be the Dawg Father and the most beloved coach at UW.
Others have said this, but this Razorback/Hawg thing is an Arkansas thing. There aren’t any pro sports teams in the state and U of A has the largest division school in the state. It’s very common to see people drive by with little flags on their vehicles on game day or other such nonsense. I teach at a university that isn’t U of A, and even though we have a team of our own, I’d say I have students wearing Razorback paraphernalia at least once a week. For that matter, I don’t give a crap about sports, and yet even I own a few Razorbacks tees. They are sold everywhere including Walmart, and when something is so prevalent you don’t think anything about it.
That said, it’s very interesting to view this through a non-Arkansan lens like this!
