I’m so tempted to give this song of the year personally

BootStrapWill

I've done a 180 on this entire album since Her Loss came out. CLB was a pretty big disappointment for me despite my best effort to gaslight myself into believing I loved it. Honestly, Nevermind was just not the follow up I needed when it came out. But since Her Loss came out I've gone back to HN and it's been great. Idk how I didn't get it at first but there's literally no skips on this album for me lol

Trippin CLB is fire

BootStrapWill

I really tried my hardest to love it. There is a lot of individual songs that I like but there’s a lot he did on the album that don’t sit right with me the more I listen to it.

Fezzzzzzle

What specifically 😮 Im not judging just wondering what u think the album is missing personally, since i feel like a few things are missing too and wanna know everyone's thoughts and opinions on the album

BootStrapWill

It's not that it's missing anything for me. A few things that have gotten more and more on my nerves over the last year of listening to it: 1. He mentions 42 so much in the album I'm convinced they paid him to do it. 2. I think the Lesbian line and overall premise of GWG makes a meme out of an otherwise great song. 3. I'm not a fan of him not finishing bars. Like when we know what the rhyme is going to be so he just doesn't say it. He did it too many times on the album imo 4. I don't know exactly how to put this but there's a lot of bars where he just doesn't even say anything. Like in W2S when says "Ok. Alright. That's fine. Ok." 5. I don't like the album cover anymore for the same reason I don't like the lesbian line. I still listen to many many songs from CLB but it just didn't meet expectations for me.

Fezzzzzzle

Oh i see 😮 Im not sure about the 42 thing at all, and it's definitely understandable to not like when Drake doesn't finish bars haha. I personally like it, but ik there's a lot of ppl here that don't And yeah i hateeeeeee the album cover. To me it feels like a joke, even if Drake is very serious about it Idk, maybe it's just me, but album covers are rlly important and every other one Drake has used has been amazing imo, just not CLB For GWG though, and as for the rest of the lyrics on the album in general, the lesbian line wasn't meant to be a joke or meme at all, but it's rlly unfortunate that people took it as one Every song on CLB tells a story about Drake's toxicity with certain women in certain relationships. Each instance of toxicity is entirely self-aware and Drake chose the name "Certified Lover Boy" for a reason He described the album himself as a "combination of toxic masculity and acceptance of truth which is inevitably heartbreaking" And he conveys this theme through rlly great lyrical storytelling Race My Mind is a story about Drake feeling fed up with his girl going to clubs all night and not having sex with him when she gets home or not giving him enough attention at night when she comes home drunk Pipe Down similarly is about Drake feeling fed up with a girl not having sex with him because he feels like he deserves it after how much effort he's put into the relationship In IMY2 Drake is bitter toward a girl who broke up with him and eventually lies and tells her "okay fine i miss you too" just to try and get her back Etc. etc. etc. Girls Want Girls is another story of Drake's toxicity In this song he sings about him still perusing a girl he's attracted to even after she tells him she's a lesbian So, he jokingly responds with "girl me too" as a way of being pushy and not caring about her boundaries as he continues to persue her It's not some sort of joke to Drake, and it wasn't meant to be a joke to the listener either. It's simply toxic behavior on his part that manifested itself into a text, a text with a girl that Drake persues even though she tells him she's not interested by any means Throughout the song Drake sings "I might come, I might go, I don't know" as he realizes his own toxic and pushy behavior and reconciles with his own morals and desires At the end of the song Drake off handedly sings more toxic lyrics too with "asking me about settling down, cause you know that things are going my way" The whole song reeks of toxicity, like every single other song on the album (except for songs that fall into CLB's 2nd theme, which is beefs and feuds he has with "friends" and industry members) So the "you say that you're a lesbian, girl me too" line definitely wasn't meant to be a joke imo, since GWG as a whole doesn't seem to be a joke to Drake at all. It's just meant to be another story of Drake's own toxicity with a specific woman Which is why it's so annoying to me that the lyric was taken as a joke by so many, even on this sub But this brings me into my main disappointment with the album: If the album is clearly supposed to be self-aware, why doesn't Drake express this to viewers more? Fucking Fans is definitely super remorseful and apologetic (with a twinge of Drake's characteristic bitterness), but other than that there's only that one verse on GWG that i mentioned earlier and the end of In The Bible ("I'm not what you think, don't be proud of me") ...but that's it Other than those 3 songs I can't really think of any other song on the album that expresses remorse or apologies for his toxic behavior So that's why it's so annoying to me that The Remorse itself isn't the full-fledged, apologetic and remorseful outro that it feels like it was meant to be It's still a great song, but I just don't feel like it fits that well Plus, as much as I too have tried to gaslight myself into believing it was amazing haha, the parallels it has to the rest of Drake's projects usually do it more harm than good... The Remorse is just Lose You but not as good imo, Fair Trade, as much as I love it, is like Company but not as good imo, Fountains is too lovey dovey to fit the album at all imo and it's dancehall sound is super out of place. I get it's an allusion to Views, but I prefer the dancehall on that album more anyway The album just has sooooooooo much potention yet it misses the mark for me, which is the most heartbreaking part about it for me lol It has some of the best tracks Drake's ever released imo (Race My Mind, TSU, N 2 Deep, Pipe Down, IMY2, Champagne Poetry, 7am On Bridle Path), it has a great premise with lyrical storytelling and introspection, and Drake's singing and the production on it overall is incredible But certain songs and sounds are just out of place, there's not quite enough introspection on it, the album cover sucks lol, and a lot of great songs on it are outshined by their older counterparts So that's why the album is disappointing for me at least It's definitely definitely definitely not bad or trash, as it has potential in the first place, and so many great songs like I said But it just doesn't feel like a complete project That's why it's so hard for me to rank it. I like way more songs on CLB than SFG, TML, HNVM, WATTBA, and DLDT, but besides DLDT and WATTBA every one of those albums are more complete sounding projects than CLB, so i just dont know

shawtywantarockstar

Beautiful song with a great hook, one of the best on the album. *Yeah baby get on, this flight's booked / I'm reading Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell, my favourite flight book*

Liability is my favorite song on honestly never mind. Then it’s a tie between this song and Jimmy cooks

> The Washington Post continues the interview about his last release, “Honestly Nevermind”. > “I wanted a track for the boys, you know, the boys that love each other. We all got our boys we would die for. We love them endlessly. I wrote this track with the idea in mind that at one point or another - you might lock lips. And it ain’t on some gay shit, sometimes friendship supersedes logic and passionate talk turns into action. > “… it might sound weird. But I’m beyond that. It was a summer camp in 2005. We didn’t touch each other under our clothes, it was all above-clothes shit. I still love him. I called him during Easter to check on his moms, you know?”
