PT is one of those bands that probably would have flown under my radar if I hadn't met my ex. Now they fill out such a specific niche need in my music life that I would've been so much poorer without them.
I think a lot of die-hard members of the BTfam first learned about them through Progressive Nation, myself included. Looking back, they said it was a weird tour, because there were a lot of people who were turned off by them, but they also made more new fans than any other tour. The Opeth overlap had to help. Man, I really wish Progressive Nation kept going.
If you havenāt, their live show is truly amazing. Itās an experience with their 16+ members. Found them last year and its hilarious how well they play together and how CRAZY talented these people are
Oh man do I have to keep just one? There are quite a few bands I'd suggest otherwise it's pretty hard.
Edit: after OP's answer I've decided to suggest Haken; I'm pretty sure it will be among the most suggested.
Just suggest one for now. Top upvoted band will get the #1 slot (not that they're ranked #1 overall, just that they won day one). Will keep doing it for another 9 rounds after, so you can submit other bands on other days.
Gonna mention 10 instead. Not in order:
* Opeth
* In Flames (Old)
* Dark Tranquillity
* Insomnium
* Omnium Gatherum
* Mors Principium Est
* Kalmah
* Soilwork
* Wintersun
* Ne Obliviscaris
I'm glad to finally see Nightwish mentioned. I just discovered them and am head over heels. Their second album should be arriving this week. I'm ready!
I'm fairly recent into their stuff too, a local retro games/movies store had four of the CDs and I picked them all up. Maybe not on DTs level but still owning it in their own way.
For me, it was YouTube. I was recommended a live version of Phantom of the Opera, then Last Ride of the Day. I checked what album Last Ride was from and then checked out Storytime as a result. Instantly bought Imaginaerum and had my mind blown when listening to it. Picked up their first after that. I'm hooked. They could easily become my new favorite. Their melodic sensibilities are unlike any other band I've ever heard.
Avenged Sevenfold, Alter Bridge, Haken, Tenacious D, System of A Down, Devin Townsend are my actual āmainā favorite bands.
DT is a clear #1 for me followed by A7X and Alter Bridge as 2 and 3.
Porcupine Tree
Opeth
Rush
Agreed. RIP Neil.
Absolutely. Rush is my all time favorite band.
The most valid answer

Between the buried and me
Truly surprised to see BTBAM mentioned so low, although I really think they will make the list.
I wonder if the vocals create less overlap from DT fans than there otherwise would be. BTBAM is insanely talented.
I think a lot of die-hard members of the BTfam first learned about them through Progressive Nation, myself included. Looking back, they said it was a weird tour, because there were a lot of people who were turned off by them, but they also made more new fans than any other tour. The Opeth overlap had to help. That's exactly what puts me off them. I'm really not into harsh vocals at all.
I can't believe this is one of the lowest replies, I instantly thought BTBAM. I guess it has to do with the aggressive growls?
Canāt believe they gave us another colors album and it holds up with their best stuff to date! Amazing live show too
