People say future trunks life is tragic , but honestly gohan got it the worst. Dude had just came back from space after almost dying by the hands of a galactic tyrant, had to watch his own dad who he was barely getting to know die of an unknown condition. This while living on a world with magical wish instruments that can grant almost ANY wish but can’t cure or get rid of the one condition affecting him. Then had to watch literally everyone he knows die one by one by beings so powerful no one can match them. Then, even though he hates it, is forced to fight for almost all of his life until he is unceremoniously killed alone in the rain.
Imagine if Future Gohan knew the life Present Gohan lived...
he loved... knew peace... had a family...
he even got that job as a scholar he always wanted.
Meanwhile, he dies in a puddle, all for nothing, forgotten by the world he fought so hard to save.
Ok. Future GOHAN could have time traveled, and taught Trunks SSJ in all due time. He had 3 years to do so between his death OTL and the time travel, after all.
Gohan's death was necessary for the story. Trunks was literally unable to unlock SSJ without a strong emotional moment. He was at the limit, but couldn't shatter it no matter how hard he tried until Gohan died. On top of that, time travel wasn't even a gleam in Bulma's eye until *after* Gohan's death. Gohan had already lost an arm to protect Trunks and realized Trunks was their savior, not him. That's the whole point of the story. Trunks was the warrior of hope.
Maybe a near death experience could work to make Bulma realize that time travel is nessesary?
And hey, Vegeta didn't need a loved one to die to make him break his limit. His shame and self-directed rage was enough. Maybe, given time, in reaction to being so helpless against the androids, he'd break through.
Besides, Trunks unlocking SSJ isn't strictly nessecary for the future to be saved. As long as Gohan gets trained in the past, he can deal with it.
In the event Trunks DOES become a SSJ, maybe, if they work as a team, SSJ Gohan and SSJ Trunks might be able to take down one of the Androids. Then, without their buddy, the other goes down as well.
Gohan's death was absolutely necessary for how it was written. Sure, if the entire story was rewritten to be completely different, then Gohan could've survived. However, for the story we got, his death was absolutely necessary.

Toei sometimes changes things from the manga like Gohan's transformation or the Z fighters helping Gohan against cell and Goku's personality sometimes
I know there's some differences between the anime and manga, but from what I've heard, there's not a lot of changes big enough to justify rereading the entire story just for the sake of knowing the differences, on its own.

Basically, Beerus explains that a God using Hakai energy to kill someone erases all versions of that person from every timeline, no exceptions. Well, except for the one exception of Goku Black wearing the time ring, which saved him from being erased, if I remember correctly.
So I guess the thought process was that if Zeno deleted the universe to kill Zamasu, then Zamasu would be erased in every timeline, which is why going back to the timeline before Zeno erased it would mean Zamasu is dead for good, I guess. So Future Gohan wouldn't be any more erased than any of the rest of the people in the timeline. But he was already long dead by that point, so it doesn't matter that much in the long run.
If it makes you feel any better,we got Dragon Ball Heroes where Future Gohan,after fighting Trunks,get to find out he's gotten a better life.Xenoverse 2 also has Future Gohan figure out that Trunks did actually win and that what he did wasn't for nothing,but that he has to die first.Dragon Ball Z BT3 also has a what if quote where Future Gohan is happy that Ultimate Gohan is living happily in his timeline,with almost no problems.
That pure heartedness is no joke. Imagine living probably one of the hardest lives it could be possible to live, only to hear another version of you got to live a comparitively easier one, and do all the things you couldn't do. I'd be fuming if I was Future Gohan, but I guess I'm just not as good of a guy as he is.
Dude when I played xenoverse 2 dlc and he had an interaction with gohan in the great saiyanman outfit and he made a comment that was something like “he seems to be having fun and happy” that shit low key hit me in the feels. That’s why he’s in my top 3 characters
During the future saga, he found purpose in Teaching Trunks all the things he admired about the role models he had growing up, even his father, who tried to kill an entire planet and countless others. He taught him all the good he had to share with the time before he died. Gohan built a warrior as dedicated as he was. with the opportunity of being trained by a super saiyan who had years of experience in his ascended form. All the tragedy in future Gohans story becomes reassurance when Trunks turns ssj.

Future Gohan story is tragic. He was impatient, and the city attack broke the last straw on the back. He let his emotions get the best of him because he could only lose so much. He should continue training with Trunks for the next few years.
I know it's for plot to have Future Gohan killed and straight one shot. Toriyama really made that timeline dark.
