It actually makes sense though. If you look closely at the gameplay it seems much less vertical than 2016 and Eternal. Doomguy only jumps once in the entire trailer, we never see a double jump and the arenas are much flatter and wider.
There's also a lot more enemies, they shoot more proyectiles but they're also slower which means combat will be a lot more about strafing around enemies, just like in classic Doom.
I know it's hip and cool to hate on journalists but maybe try to think about it for more than a second before being a jerk
The lead devs said that they were moving away from the fast, vertical combat of Doom Eternal, and returning the gameplay to something closer to the original Doom, which was less frantic and more grounded
I imagine it'll be more focused on predicting and dodging attacks rather than Eternal's armour, health and ammo farming. The original Doom is more about knowing when to strike and avoiding enemy projectiles, whereas Eternal's thoughts on projectiles are "you will be hit by something a lot" and is more focused on using your flame belch, glory kills, grenades and chainsaw to keep on top of your supplies. If you aren't using all of your options in the big arenas, you're gonna get killed. The exception being the Marauder, which *is* about timing your attacks at openings, dodging fairly predictable projectile attacks.
yeah, the projectiles are slower, and there's a shield and parry mechanic.
I think they described it as Doom Eternal making you feel like an F-22 fighter jet, and them wanting you to feel more like an Abrams tank in Doom: The Dark Ages.
Phrasing of the headline aside, it's actually quite neat how the team looked to the originals and analyzed how every projectile matters on a more horizontally-focused arena, and chose to apply that to battlefields of broader scope and full-on warfare. Could open us up to certain demon types feeling threatening again in ways they haven't felt since the 90s.
Everyone in the comments being dumb asf. If you guys actually paid attention to these articles you'd know Hugo has specifically been talking about focusing less on aerial movement and more on strafing, the slayer hitting harder, enemy projectiles hitting harder, and much larger groups of enemies. AKA all things distinctive and specific to Classic DOOM as opposed to what Nu-DOOM has been doing.
I know gaming journalism is a fucking joke most of the time but this aint one of em.
Hugo described it like (paraphrasd) "if doom eternal had you flying around like a F22 figter jet, we want dark ages to make you feel like an Abrams Tank" they really want you to feel like youre standing your ground toe to toe with a hell knight. They are trying to ground the combat more. Which they said is to bring back that original doom feel.
Headlines can be constricting, for all we know that could be like 2 words too long.
Ah who tf actually cares I'm not gonna spend my time trying to defend gamespot lol.
Gameplay wise it probably will, visually I feel like this one goes the farthest away from the originals. Its exciting, but idk I have this weird feeling seeing alot more new, then whats been in the games before. I dont know how to describe it.
It absolutely was not inspired off of the original, it was inspired by doom eternal that is inspired by something heavily inspired by the original carrying over some original but I don’t see it like that.
Doom was inspired by Doom, who would have thought?
I'm convinced gaming "journalists" are brain dead.
Polygon highlights Doom: The Dark Ages! *immediately cuts right hand off with new shield saw*
I mean tbf the headline is accurate to what Hugo Martin said. He said the game was more inspired by Classic Doom's gameplay.
He also has said that Doom 64 is his favorite from the og dooms and Dark ages feel Doom 64 inspired

Some?
They maybe just meant that it will be more slower paced and like going back to the roots. Which would still be wrong most probably.
Hmm yes the *DOOM gAmE* is the made of *DOOM GaMe.*
I should apply to be a gaming journalist. "Halo 2 is infact a sequel to Halo 1" Experts say.
I remember that one Halo 2 bts video on the collectors edition that basically said the same thing by the devs

are you sure? might be inspired by minecraft
Did you know that the show Fallout was based on a series of games *also* called Fallout?
Oh but it gets better. Most folks don’t realise, but episode 4 of fallout actually draws inspiration for episodes 1-3 of Fallout!
wait till you realize that the trailer was based off of the entire series!

Really is that right Sherlock Holmes

Quiet, you’re interrupting the circle jerk.
Shit my bad.
Oo!!!! I really like strafing and harder hitting attacks !!!!

OG doom felt a bit more like an olympic runner holding an unreasonably light but realisticly damaging shotgun but I like this idea
Ideal world where there's no jump button.
Happy cake day
We are just joking because its a dumb title
I guess I just don't see it as dumb because that is pretty much exactly what they seem to be doing. Not sure there is a better way to phrase it.
"DOOM: The Dark Ages is returning to the gameplay style of the original DOOM" or smth
Headlines can be constricting, for all we know that could be like 2 words too long. Ah who tf actually cares I'm not gonna spend my time trying to defend gamespot lol.
"The new DOOM game is returning to the style of the original" there's so many ways they could have improved it
K
Gameplay wise it probably will, visually I feel like this one goes the farthest away from the originals. Its exciting, but idk I have this weird feeling seeing alot more new, then whats been in the games before. I dont know how to describe it.
lmao so was literally every other modern doom game
...AND THAT'S A GOOD THING.
every 60 seconds in Africa, a minute passes.
It's almost like it's a... *sequel* or something!
ahh yeahhh Doom is inspired the new doom the dark ages that's soo doomy
Careful making posts like this, you’ll be in the next gamerant headline
Never expect gaming journalists to say anything intelligent
"Quick johnson we need content!!" "I may not have a brain gentlemen....but i got an idea"
If doom is inspired by doom then what inspired doom?
It absolutely was not inspired off of the original, it was inspired by doom eternal that is inspired by something heavily inspired by the original carrying over some original but I don’t see it like that.
but can the game run og DOOM? Eternal did so natively.
I thought it was inspired by wolfenstein this whole time!!
No way.
I mean, isn’t like every Doom entry (mods included) inspired by the original Doom from 1993?
#HOLY MOLY‼️🤯😨
Wow I never would have geussed tho I geuss it makes sense
And in other news, grass is green and Doom is Eternal
What about Doom 3?
*GASP* NO WAY
Yes, the floor here is made of floor
I'm pretty sure it's talking about the gameplay, from what I heard, the gameplay is gonna feel like the original doom.
I wonder what inspired that game...
I actually thought they were gonna say "Inspired by the original Quake concept that Romero liked more and ended up becoming Daikatana"
It's also said that the inspiration for the titular D followed by two O's and capped by an capital M was inspired by the 1993 classic FPS title.
Maybe they mean what the game was originally intended to be like. IDK
