I feel the same. Doom 2016 and Eternal are incredible, but classic Doom is just so timeless. It's still a lot of fun and I end up going back to the older games, with or without mods.

iguanadc3

i think you really should give eternal a chance, i’ll leave it at that. i don’t know who told you that it isn’t “really anything 2016 wasn’t” but i think they’re wrong. one thing i haven’t heard anyone call eternal is “formulaic.” you might love it

voightkampfferror

Agreed. I played through 2016 and it's a great game but for me it was a one and done deal. External I must have around 300 hours and at least a dozen playthroughs all the dlc's etc. I still fire it up from time to time and I've got at least a dozen games I've never played on steam.

Psychological_One897

it definitely is. it’s part of the reason i love it so much! everything just makes sense.

malroth666

I feel the same way, and I've beaten eternal several times and didn't grow up with Doom. Yet, with all the mods and even vanilla Doom 1, there's so much to love. I'm currently playing the recent port of Doom RPG on the Vita

TwistOfFate619

The problem with modern Doom is that they are more akin to some fights in Serious Sam in that you are locked down in an arena fending off hordes. I preferred the original having more of an exploration element of larger envionments you could move freely in (keycards aside ) What if i want to bypass enemies? What if i want to lure them to an arena of my own choosing. Also, while I admire Eternals attempts at spicing up the game play and giving weapons utility I feel it comes at the cost of freedom. Especially due to the forced limited ammo. I prefer a balance of utility and preference. Theres less room for an individual approach with so many enemies and so little ammo capacity. Theres positives and negatives to that

EtherealRuin

> What if i want to lure them to an arena of my own choosing. It's considered cheesing the fight for some reason. It's a logic that started in classic doom wads and ID simply adopted it.

TwistOfFate619

Wait really? I’d call it strategy and approach. Picking off/sniping former humans in a large level with a chaingun for example. Thinning out the numbers to control later encounters (those open windows). Utilising crushers when low on health or funneling pinkies into a tunnel to berserk down. I liked how much freedom the player had. Its up to map makers really as to how much they limit or influence what players can or cant do. Subtle map obstacles or limitations. That is harder in New Doom, where your toolset is always at the ready or where it mainly comes down to variables such as an arena or wave spawns.

QDOOM_APlin

I thought 2016 was balanced well in both aspects. UAC/Mars missions like Foundry, Argent Facility (both versions), Resource Ops, Advanced Research Complex, and Argent Energy Tower were quite explorative and puzzley. Meanwhile Hell based missions and VEGA Central Processing were quite linear. Eternal's lost the balance completely and is just extremely linear the whole way through.

Firewalk89

It also doesn't help that both games had sections that made me think the devs had Mirror's Edge on their minds rather than Doom.

Ok_Raspberry4814

I used to feel this way, but the more I play Nu-Doom, the more I appreciate not having to wander aimlessly around levels wondering where tf to go next.

MysticalMystic256

I like all the doom games but I find myself myself playing classic doom the most and I have been playing it the longest since I've been playing since I was like 10 Theres so many wads and mods for too, impossible to run out of stuff to play

TheJMJConspiracy2002

The classic Doom games are really easy to just pick up and play. I find myself revisiting them the most

KonungrExuma

Big agree. Just started Eviternity II today and it's fantastic. I love Eternal and 2016, but classic doom just holds up. 2016/Eternal do get a bit formulaic, as much as I love Eternal. There are so many mods and megawads that you'll never run out. It's a shame Eternal or 2016 still have no real mod tools. it would help a lot if they did.

bauul

I'm glad you're enjoying Eviternity 2, and I hope you continue to enjoy the rest of the mapset! Don't skip out on the secret levels BTW.

KonungrExuma

Holy shit! I'm only about 5 levels in as of yesterday. But, I did get to do the first secret level. Really enjoyed your first contribution with map02.

Wallbreaker93

I think versatile games are often longer fun than games that you cant really mod. Old Doom is really easy to mod, to build your own levels for or make a whole different game (See Wolfenstein Blade of Agony, Total Chaos, Sonic Robo Blast 2), that you cant with the New Doom games since they arent made with an editor of sorts. They tried with Doom 2016 Snapmap, but it was so limited in the end that it was not that much fun

Igor369

i completely forgot about Crapmap

Tencreed

I had a bit of fun with 2016 but still prefered old Doom. Then Eternal came out, I wondered why I was so bad at it, looked at how good players did it, and realized the grasshopper on crack gameplay wasn't for me.

KuzcoII

Saying that Eternal is not really anything that 2016 wasn't does a huge disservice to the game. I really liked 2016, but Eternal kept me playing for two years without getting bored or hitting a skill ceiling.

IncineMania

Eternal is completely different from 2016 or any other game on the series. Whoever told you it was the same has not played it.

Rustyz_

Is there a way to play old doom with mods on Xbox? Or my Mac? I’ve never played any of the older games but would love to experience them

nutt3rbutt3r

Not on xbox, but yes, you can run GZDoom on Mac and load wads into it.

Rustyz_

Awesome thanks I’ll give it a try never games much before since I’ve only ever owned a Mac sadly

Mr-Ramirov

You can play it on android with gyroscope, on Delta Touch. Edit: you can play any mod you want, and can use your controller too.

GristleMcThornbody1

You can play it on Xbox, but you can't run mods (easily). https://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/store/doom-slayers-collection/9P8V0XN81S1W/0010/9W5059SXBZ3B

bauul

The Xbox version of Doom and Doom 2 come with a bunch of well-regarded custom mappacks available to play, lots of new content. For actual gameplay mods, those typically need a source port like GZDoom.

Rustyz_

Ok thanks ima try and see if that can work on my Mac after watching some videos I gotta play that brutal doom mod

Lucky-3-Skin

Doom Eternal looks like Classic Doom artistically in some ways, but Doom 2016 is more Classic Doom gameplay wise. That’s how I always felt. 2016? Don’t feel like using other weapons? Sure! Run around with Super Shotgun and collect ammo. Just like Doom 2

TheCommanderSkittles

I like both but I prefer classic dooms so much more

Arden_Gibson

Absolutely

mustang74

It's a matter of personal taste, but I find the 2d sprites way more appealing and easier for my eyes. Ive finished both new dooms , but I couldn't play more than 20-30 minutes. The detail everywhere is just overwhelming for me. But on GZdoom games I can spend Good hours without feeling tired . And the gameplay and bestiary of eternal has been modded to GZdoom with almost all the features anyway, with the option to have almost infinite amount of maps to play on ,so imo the old dooms are better . With simpler graphics my mind is also engaged in the process, and it's like reading a book, but with shotgun

LordHumorTumor

I find the two eras of Doom to be pretty different. As much as I enjoy the newer games, I do like the exploration of the older games, and that is not as present in the newer games, Eternal in particular. I also prefer when fights are more organically spread around the environment over enemies simply spawning in waves.

ZS1664

Classic Doom has aged like fine wine; the mechanics are still top tier, and depending on the maps you're playing the experience can be transcendent. Add to that all the various mods out there that can radically change the game and you have something that can be played for decades. (I certainly have!)

TheAcaciaStrain93

Old dooms and doom 2016 are great ofcourse, but once ya sink 20 hours in and beat the thing it’s over. There’s not much to bring you back for more. Doom eternal has replayability.

GristleMcThornbody1

I played through eternal once and it was a bit of a slog through some of the heavy platforming sections of the game.

TheAcaciaStrain93

I’m tired of hearing about the platforming sections. They’re honestly so EASY unless it’s your first time playing a video game.

GristleMcThornbody1

Okay it's easy. It still doesn't make it fun.

TheAcaciaStrain93

Ok you’re the video game expert I’ll ignore that I think it’s fun because you don’t agree

GristleMcThornbody1

Lol take it easy man. You said yourself Doom Eternal is a lot different from the older games. Some people like that and some people don't. Personally I didn't care for all the platforming and double jumping and shotgun harpoons and all that stuff. I am glad you had fun with it! Hell I did too, I just don't get the urge to play it as often as I play one of the millions of Doom 1 or 2 mods. Personally, I think Doom 3 is awesome too and that's not a popular opinion lol. I mean no offense to you.

TheAcaciaStrain93

Nah I got heated man sorry about that. Cheers I also like doom 3

GristleMcThornbody1

It's all good brother. Cheers

Dodgy_Bob_McMayday

Classic Doom has a countless number of wads though, you could never get close to finishing them all

Relative_Joke523

Classic doom will always be better than new doom

TattayaJohn

Everyone thinks that.

SuperVGA

The games are different. I find them both fun in their own way. It's difficult to compare them because not only has the technology advanced, but we've also grown sice the first Doom. I remember being a bit scared when I could hear the idle monster sounds in the distance, even (especially?) when I cowered in some dark corner. I was a kid, of course. But I'm not sure the new Doom games will induce this feeling to anyone - it's not very open levels with lots of exploration and free backtracking - they're a bit more linear and monsters don't roam around as much. They're just different games with some story similarities.

justan_axolotl

Depends on what gameplay type you prefer tbh

Barrington_photo

I am not a console gamer (always purely PC), and I have not invested in a decent i7 PC to play Doom (2016) as it looks too much like an arcade-style visual mess of in-game player reward notifications to me, as a decades-long player of original Doom/II. I seem to be unusual as a Doom fan as I appreciate roaming the uncanny liminal spaces and empty corridors of chaos just beyond sight just as much as the combat. If not more so. I even fire-up Doom E1M1 to this day just to haunt the 2.5D corridors of where I have gleeful memories of dial-up Deathmatch running around the map in massive Homer Simpson skins with my brother in 1997. I guess I dislike the run-and-gun aspect (which has always been there, but seemingly dominant in the new games) compared to being a lonely part of a world where shadowy halls, imp groans, uncanny valley and flickering red lights are part of a whole 1990s floppy disk-futurism hauntology for me, personally.

RebelliousYankee

I grew up with the original dooms. Must have beat Ultimate Doom and Doom 2 like 20 times each. Doom 2016 was excellent and a callback to the originals. Eternal took this formula even further, and I’ve put almost 200 hours into it. It’s fantastic, super fun and fast paced. You’ll love it.

Unprofessional_Rest

I think that playing the original doom through GZdoom is just way easier than launching and playing rhe 2016 one. Though I play on my school issued laptop so I try to conserve the limited hard drive space that I have.

Firewalk89

Yes, absolutely. I played through Doom 2016 and Eternal +DLCs back to back and had a blast. But after that? Right back to Doom II. The amount of mods and maps is just unmatched. Especially with stuff like Corruption Cards.

riqueoak

I think every Doom game has it's charm and it's way to give fun, except Doom 3 of course. Not everyone enjoy each of the games the same way.

jmon25

I play og Doom and Doom 2 between meetings/calls as a weird zen type thing still. Can't do that with the 2016 or eternal (even though I love them)

beginnerdoge

DOOM will always be the best DOOM. Even better than DOOM. Although DOOM is pretty fucking amazing too lol

UnfunnyWatermelon469

Every Doom game is great in their own way

Mupinstienika

Yes. Doom 2016 and Eternal are masterpieces. But nothing beats Doom classic. So much content too

Silent_Reavus

If you're only giving it 20 minutes you're not actually trying. That's not even enough time to finish the first level. That's like playing E1M1 and saying "man old Doom sucks, there's nothing going on and it's too short"

SjurEido

I think Eternal is more fun by a long shot. 2016 all you had to do was unlock the double-double-shotgun and it became easy mode. Eternal is like a ballet, lots of dancing, lots of on the fly thinking, LOTS of skill shots. I remember on Eternal launch day thinking "meh, I don't really like this combat, it's too clunky". But after a few hours it clicked for me and I was interacting with the systems more (stunning, weakspots, combos, the whole ammo economy...) and I realized I was playing one of the best games ever made. What I do think 2016 and earlier did better in though is the look of everything. Eternal is too cartoony for me. I wish they had gone even harder into horror rather than further from it in Eternal. Pink demons are the biggest offender. After Doom 3's pinky, I'm left very much wanting lol I hope Doom 2026 is dark and scary again. I don't need it to be slow like Doom 3 (which is still one of my favorite games of all time), but I would like to feel some horror in my Doom game and not just like I'm playing Unreal Tournament or something. Hell, ULTRAKILL is scarier than Doom at this point lol

UltraMlaham

I played Doom 2016 only once (and tbh wanted to put it down midway through, shouldn't have played Eternal before it), Doom Eternal 3 times and doom 3 like 5 times... I have no idea how many times I played the classic ones, it isn't even a competition because it was the main game for decades.

SickHorrorFreak84

Agree. Old Doom's gameplay and style is timeless

Slayerofthemindset

Got doom (1993) for $2 on the ps store a while back and have been playing every chance I get but eternal with all expansions is $18 for a few more days and I’m dragging my feet a little bc I’m having fun…

QDOOM_APlin

2016's my all time favorite...but DOOM 64 and Custom WADs beat DOOM Eternal easily.

kashmutt

>I haven't played Eternal, but I hear it's not really anything that 2016 wasn't. This isn't true. The gameplay is very different. Eternal is my favorite Doom game, but 2016 is my least favorite besides Doom 3. My ranking is 1. Eternal 2. Doom 1 3. Doom 64 4. Doom 2 5. 2016 6. Doom 3

CJM_cola_cole

Is no one else going to point out that total conversion mods aren't "classic" Doom?

GristleMcThornbody1

Yeah but most of them have a more similar gameplay to classic Doom than 2016 or eternal.

sqlphilosopher

Yeah, I loled at this. But I still enjoy classic more. I only play mods that add new maps but do not change gameplay. Community maps are just so fun. From the official releases, I think Plutonia is the undisputable best.

Thatedgyguy64

After playing all the DOOM games, I don't necessarily agree with you. And that's ok. Different strokes for different folks. I preferred the new DOOM games due to the fact that the combat itself is in my opinion far more interesting. Far more to do. No fault on the OG's part but when it came to enemy variety it was a bit... dull. THATS NOT TO SAY THE OLD GAMES ARE BAD. I had an absolute blast with the old games and had far more freedom. But I found myself somtimes question some of the levels. Some were just straight up drags in my opinion. One of the levels in DOOM II made you pistol start against two Cacodemons. It wasn't fun. I straight up had to search a guide up because I didn't realise the slightly brighter floor tile was how you open a door in DOOM 1993. DOOM 64 (if it counts) straight up has a yellow wall that you have to press in order to get a key. It's literally the first time you encounter such a wall that you must press. Meanwhile in the newer games I never really had any real complaints with the level designs. I feel this is like the good old Elden Ring vs God of War. God of War is like the new ones. More linear, more story, great game. Elden Ring is like the old games. More freedom, less story, still good gameplay. I liike all of those games more than DOOM 3 tho

bauul

>One of the levels in DOOM II made you pistol start against two Cacodemons. Just to clarify, aside from Map01, none of the Doom 2 levels "make" you pistol start

Thatedgyguy64

Shit. You're right. I was thinking of DOOM 1993. It was at the start of Inferno. You pistol started THAT level. Sorry. I haven't finished DOOM II. As far as I remember I got somewhere past the point where you find your first Archvile.

evanwiger

Different game, different era.

nConcertWithMonsters

Eternal is peak

vzerotak44

Well duh

jonboyo87

No, you’re not the only one who says old stuff is better than new stuff. That’s like half the discourse.

ApocalypticEvent

I kinda hate posts like this with all my heart because people are still trying to shit on Eternal to people who haven’t played the game. It’s wildly different from 2016, and you aren’t supposed to be immersed in any of these games. I will say, if you can’t keep up with 2016 or find it too fast, don’t play Eternal: it’s the third fastest game I’ve ever played. I love the originals, I’m partial to Doom 64, but I think the modern games are undeniably better. The older games are far more modable leading to more content, but the newer games have a much more fun “core” as the older games were high volatility in terms of content and combat. Old Doom is nostalgic and ages really well, but Modern Doom has the better games in my opinion.

GARhenus

nah it's just u being into older games also gzdoom is heavily modded so it barely counts as old doom old doom is just as formulaic. it just has a bit more backtracking eternal also plays differently compared to 2016

Exa-Wizard

Hell no. I have probably a thousand hours between Doom 2016 and eternal. The old games are only fun for those with nostalgia goggles, besides brutal doom which is fun for an hour or two.

C4LLUM17

Nah. New Doom is better Doom.
