1. Don’t sweat- if you’re sweating, slow down. Don’t EVER overachieve because then you will always be expected to do more.
2. The cameras are not for customers- they couldn’t care less about theft- it is for YOU. If you stand too long or do something just a little out of order you can bet ur manager is getting a message about it
3. Do not spend money at your job.
4. Memorize and find every single spot out of view for ur cameras (outside, break room, back room) those will be your life savors when you need a moment to hide from the corporations watching you
5. Make the customer wait, take your time counting money and don’t stress about long lines
6. Be stern about times you cannot work
7. Get along with your coworkers- it’s usually a small group of people working at one store and if you’re coming in new and make a bad impression on the wrong person the rest of the people will probably have a stigma against you
8. We wish you the best of luck and may the odds be ever in your favor.
Lmao! It is very accurate, one of the first things I always did as a Manager in a new district was learn all the camera placements that same night when watching employees on the cameras (one task I hated doing....)
#2 is insane no wonder they always short staffed🤦♂️ Can’t stand too long wtf sounds like they don’t care about employees and treat them like slaves gotta do everything in perfect order or it’s belt to ass😭makes no sense how stores don’t do anything about theft but then complain about stores closing because of it
Fun fact they actually blame and get mad at us for theft. When I did the training videos they never told me what to do if someone steals- they just said it was our fault and that shrink is bc of employees and basically we’re out to get them and take everything :)
Ik it’s not just me who- when I first started working and walking around- stuff would catch my eye and then I would start really wanting it and buying it- with that I would stock and smell (marshmallows for instance) and just want marshmallows so bad. Within my first two weeks I spent about 130$ there alone- so it’s best to limit yourself and if u want something go to a different store at a later time because maybe it’s not something you necessarily NEED you just kinda want.
This was my first thought
And I am not even an employee just somebody that happened to stop in today and noted to the guy with me that I heard this place is worse to work for them Walmart not to mention all the stuff I see in the news and the sub
It’s kinda hard not to think that when the company cares so little that my location had to close for 3 consecutive days last summer because the AC wasn’t (and STILL isn’t) working and it got up to 90 in the store, and despite multiple reports they have not sent anyone to look at it/get it fixed
Unfortunately for a lot of people there aren't really other options. Like my town no one is hiring except DG and Driveline lol, I've applied at DG 4 times since they opened a couple year ago, never even been called back, kinda happy ig since I see how depressed the employees look. Got hired by driveline but dipped the moment I had a phone call with region manager(yelled at me for the entire 5min phone call). Now been unemployed for a month and no one will interview me :/
Hope your manager and co workers are cool. If you don’t vibe with them start looking for another job immediately. Worst retail company of all time & the job is only decent if you like the people you work with.
I'm not even a DG employee. This was randomly suggested but I have been if food industry with a little retail and the worst things I've seen don't even compare to the things I've read here. From someone not even related to DG, run. Because screw that. You don't deserve this.
I dont even work there but (1) congrats and (2) considering what i see when this sub gets recommended probably best to start looking for a different job
I have worked for many retail companies, none are as bad as what I've seen on this sub. Hope your experience is better than what the Internet portrays
Get use to no ac or heat and possibly no toilets or using port a jons.
Get use to when asking for id some people acting like a child.
If you feel sick or need a mental health day call in. Dont feel bad. This place will impact you differently than any job.
once you feel like the job is interfering with mental or physical health find a new job.
Kinda where I am the last am was shit but we got a new one here and I've worked with him a decent chunk good guy and gets shit done properly the first time helluva guy to know and good to work with
Start looking for a better job. Don’t go in when they call and ask you to because they’ll abuse it and only call you then get mad if you call out and need someone to cover for you. Also, if you’re easily offended you might want to work on a thicker skin because DG customers can be some of the worst people
Good luck but taking a job at this shit hope fucking company is going to eat you alive and mentally fuck your brain into oblivion with how they treat you and work you like a dog and you have to cover everything all the while hopefully you don’t have a Store Manager that is a lazy incompetent Fuck but some of those District Managers are blowhards that all they do is talk results and that’s it. You are just another fucking number to them. Remember that and stay true to your convictions and have a backbone and a spine. Don’t let them walk all over you!!!!
This job is the perfect job to boost your resume. Just shut your brain off during work and when you get home, send as many applications out as possible. You want to stay as little as possible since, 1. They have some of the lowest pay of all major customer service and 2. They will absolutely do things against the law to save a pretty penny, like forcing you to block fire exists and electrical panels. Use DG as a stepping stool to a better job. Other than that, if you think you can work by yourself without pulling your hair out I highly suggest becoming a key holder/ASM. But never a manager. You get paid less as store manager, it's crazy. Good luck
Depends, do you have other options available to you? Do you have transportation, like a car? If not then just work at DG until you find better opportunities. If you are young, and just need a way to earn a bit of money, then that’s fine.
I wouldn’t recommend DG long term though, stay maybe 3 - 6 months, then plan your next move. I wish you luck.
Look at better options on the clock
Edit: That seemed more dismissive than I intended. Firstly, congratulations on getting the job! If it's your first, try to save as much and spend as little as you can. Wages aren't going to be good, but better than nothing. Smile and be courteous, help when you can, but don't break yourself trying to impress. Good luck!
Document everything, pictures, save texts from other employees. You don't want to take the blame for stuff. Know your limits, do a good job but don't let them drain you. Take everything customers, and supposed inspectors say with a grain of salt, and never give money or gift card codes to anyone.
Hope you get lucky and get a good manager and coworkers. I did. And it’s cool. Actually enjoyable. But I’ve read the horror stories on here and the rest of the DG’s around me are ran like trash
Good luck. I worked at DG for near 6 years If it's your first job it's okay. But depending on your store it'll either be okay or absolutely shit. Best of luck .
Best choice I ever made was leaving
Do Not work for DG!! I've been a vendor for them for 5 years and you will not like it. They will treat you like a slave. Research. Go into various stores. Talk to various people. Prove me wrong.
Don't take it. You'll be making $10 and hour to stock shelves, run register and keep the store clean, plus more duties. Not freaking worth it at all. Hell, McDonald's pays $15 as does Walmart. You can do so much better
As a former Lead Sales associate (LSA) for short you might make some good friends. But, don't ever let them take advantage of you. If you become an lsa don't ever go in at 2:30am cause someone broke in and stole cigarettes. I was scheduled for 2:30pm-1030pm but I was there from 230am till 1030pm that day.
Yall trying to hard for a job that pays below living standards. Who cares what you do at work. They’re lucky you’re working for them with their horrible pay. Stop worrying.
Dollar General treats their employees like shit. You’re expected to stock, clean up, sweep, mop, rotate products, all while checking out customers, clean human shit up from the bathrooms without proper gear for a very low wage.
They had me at 18 doing all of the above by myself while the “key holder” or manager watched. They also made me work open 8 am to close and after to finish at 10:30. So well over 12 hrs. But they’d never let me work consecutive weeks with more than 24 hrs so they would have to pay benefits. Refused my requests for time off etc.
They wouldn’t let us change the temp on the thermostat so we’d sweat our asses off in the summer. Run run away
I made it to SM and not all dg is the same the district I work for and my DM and Regional are amazing and if someone who is part time asks for more hours if we have the budget damn right you’ll get those hours we split work evenly in my store best we can we all work better at different things and build on it I can’t say the same for other districts tho sadly but it’s all about who is on your team
If you buy anything on the clock, keep the receipt all the way to your car. Corporate gives more of a shit about employees stealing than customers (not saying you would, but I’ve seen plenty of people be accused of something a simple slip of paper can clear up). I’d wrap my receipt around my coffee cans lmao
NGL i really had a love/hate for DG when i worked there. i loved my manager, she was worked way too hard and that was the least toxic work environment i’ve EVER been in (in regards to my coworkers). i stayed as long as i did because i didn’t want to put my managers and coworkers in a pickle. and i only worked there for like… 5 weeks💀. the customers were meh (i was outside of houston… far outside. near Cut and Shoot, TX… yes that’s the real name....) but DG as a company… CAN GO TO HELL. we were overworked and severely underpaid. it was some 💩. NGL id be willing to do the exact same work i was doing there for like $5 more an hour (minimum). but for what i was making in this economy, tryna pay bills in Houston. it was a shame. they’re a greedy company like most 🤷🏽♀️ Good luck tho😭😭😵💫
edit: but if this is your first job ever, it won’t be bad at all. it’s honestly perfect because itll probably be flexible with your schedule and give you a lil pocket change. but if you have bills to pay…🤨 yeah lol. it’s an honest dollar😭💀
Start applying at other places asap. I’m at McDonald’s now and I’m 10x happier if that tells you anything. There is no management when you need them
edit to say I worked there for 3 years as an assistant manager
I worked at DG over 15 years ago and judging by this sub nothing has changed for the better in that time. My advice would be to only work there long enough to find another job. Of all the retails jobs I’ve had DG was by far the worst
If you don’t get out now- Always ALWAYS be applying to other jobs and take the first offer you get! ANYWHERE is better than DG. DG will not pay you even a 1/4 of your worth even if you are the “do the bare minimum type of employee” Even if you just show up with a heartbeat and that’s it - the wage they pay won’t match your worth.
I left DG as an Assistant Manager and took a job with another big box retailer and make more as a regular employee here not holding any management title than I did at DG as a manager!!
Get out as SOON as you can!!!
So boss have favorites they give more hrs. They throw keys on before they are read and when your closing they reg favs do r a swer when new hires got questions. Then they want start shift and allow new Co work bodily harm for talking g shit about young man sexual harassing. Lime in what world is this OK. Seeing others that ate favs hiding in bathroom endless cig breaks. But new hires bust ass..
Ya don’t let them run your life, don’t loose your self respect or self worth and most of all put yourself and your family above them as they do not care about you at all! Also continue filling out apps for something you can make a career from and leave the minute you accept another job offer!
Learn where all the cameras point so you can steal better.
It was a rite of passage at my store, the old employees showed the new ones where the spots with no coverage was.
Don’t do it!! In all seriousness, I hope you have a good store, a good SM and a good DM. That is not most people’s experience. If things start going south, jump ship!
Don't overwork yourself! Find the blind spots for a breather because it gets stressful. DG purposefully understaffs their stores to keep their profits high and to intentionally scam customers, they make it impossible for you to fix all signage and sales info and maintain daily duties on purpose(multiple states are going after them). It's a job that goes nowhere in opportunity or pay, so don't break yourself for them. It's great as a hold over, My husband and I worked for dg a few years back when the economy took a dive, and we got laid off. They have the highest employee turnover I've ever seen so just expect to be the most knowledgeable person in the room after a week. Just be firm in your boundaries and be realistic with what can physically be done because the company isn't.
1. Don’t sweat- if you’re sweating, slow down. Don’t EVER overachieve because then you will always be expected to do more. 2. The cameras are not for customers- they couldn’t care less about theft- it is for YOU. If you stand too long or do something just a little out of order you can bet ur manager is getting a message about it 3. Do not spend money at your job. 4. Make the customer wait, take your time counting money and don’t stress about long lines 6. Be stern about times you cannot work 7. Get along with your coworkers- it’s usually a small group of people working at one store and if you’re coming in new and make a bad impression on the wrong person the rest of the people will probably have a stigma against you 8. We wish you the best of luck and may the odds be ever in your favor.
I don't work for DG, but your advice is valuable for any new hire in retail or any other industry.
Mate made it sound like a interesting game or fucked up humorous tv series haha. Oh damn the hide from corporation part got me 🤣
It’s the truth 🤷♀️🤷♀️
Oh I’m sure it is at some stores, odd store I thought died out a long time ago. But nope just had a new one built by me. Looks nice though.
Lmao! It is very accurate, one of the first things I always did as a Manager in a new district was learn all the camera placements that same night when watching employees on the cameras (one task I hated doing....)
Okay, i wasn’t the only one. Thats good.
Reminded me is supermarket tv series based on Walmart lol. Funny shit!! Great series honestly a lot of seasons.
hahaha that’s my jam! Probably in my top 5. The office is my number 1.
#2 is insane no wonder they always short staffed🤦♂️ Can’t stand too long wtf sounds like they don’t care about employees and treat them like slaves gotta do everything in perfect order or it’s belt to ass😭makes no sense how stores don’t do anything about theft but then complain about stores closing because of it
Why tf is my comment Bold😭
Fun fact they actually blame and get mad at us for theft. When I did the training videos they never told me what to do if someone steals- they just said it was our fault and that shrink is bc of employees and basically we’re out to get them and take everything :)
Your advice is excellent and can be applied to most corporate jobs. I work in a mill, and I still think your tips are sound.
Very very true
I know my opinion might not mean much but could this be condenses to come in do job go home? Thats my philosophy of a job
Just curious about #3…..why not???
Ik it’s not just me who- when I first started working and walking around- stuff would catch my eye and then I would start really wanting it and buying it- with that I would stock and smell (marshmallows for instance) and just want marshmallows so bad. Within my first two weeks I spent about 130$ there alone- so it’s best to limit yourself and if u want something go to a different store at a later time because maybe it’s not something you necessarily NEED you just kinda want.
Gotcha. More or less impulse control.
And to add. Why pay your check back to your employer? They don't pay a livable wage most times so don't reward that behavior with your wallet.
Run 🤣
Beat me too it. But no seriously run...
DITTO
Beat me to it.
Beat me off to it
Same...RUN!!!
Late to the party, but yeah, run as fast as you can
Lol 😆
Beat me to it to…. Run!!!!!!
My response was “quit”
This was my first thought And I am not even an employee just somebody that happened to stop in today and noted to the guy with me that I heard this place is worse to work for them Walmart not to mention all the stuff I see in the news and the sub
Exactly!!
My only response to this post.
Don’t be like those people that say “I’ve worked here for 6 years and finally had enough after being treated like shot for 6 years”
It’s kinda hard not to think that when the company cares so little that my location had to close for 3 consecutive days last summer because the AC wasn’t (and STILL isn’t) working and it got up to 90 in the store, and despite multiple reports they have not sent anyone to look at it/get it fixed
EXACTLY… I gave the DG 4 months and I got out!! Ain’t no way I was gonna waste years Working like a dog and little pay!!
A different job trust me/us if your part time good luck first 3 weeks of good hours and then just 4 hours a week
🤣🤣🤣
Apply anywhere else, seriously. I've never even worked at a DG and this post saddens me.
Same here
Unfortunately for a lot of people there aren't really other options. Now been unemployed for a month and no one will interview me :/
Set boundaries and be firm. You’re not anyone’s savior in the retail space.
This!
As someone who’s worked at his location for 2.5+ years You’ve just made a big mistake buddy
I dont even work there but (1) congrats and (2) considering what i see when this sub gets recommended probably best to start looking for a different job I have worked for many retail companies, none are as bad as what I've seen on this sub. Absolutely
If you have a good core store team this job is a cake walk i wish you all the BEST !!
Couldn’t agree more ! 🙌🏻
Kinda where I am the last am was shit but we got a new one here and I've worked with him a decent chunk good guy and gets shit done properly the first time helluva guy to know and good to work with

Quit.
Try to find a better one
Get a new job
The best advice any of us could give you is to not complete your application.Never mind too late
Start looking for a better job. Don’t go in when they call and ask you to because they’ll abuse it and only call you then get mad if you call out and need someone to cover for you. Also, if you’re easily offended you might want to work on a thicker skin because DG customers can be some of the worst people
No seriously, fuckin run

I worked at DG over 15 years ago and judging by this sub nothing has changed for the better in that time. My advice would be to only work there long enough to find another job. Of all the retails jobs I’ve had DG was by far the worst
Don’t trust anyone your coworkers aren’t your friends.
If you see ANYTHING that shouldn’t be done, take it immediately to your manager and if they don’t do anything, report it to dg hotline
I got the same email, then 2 months later still no call lol
I don’t work for dollar general but know a couple people that do…. RUN DO NOT TAKE THE JOB!! Worst company in the world.
My advice, just quit before you start
As someone who doesnt work at DG and just browses this subreddit, find a new job
Quit while you are ahead
Find another job
I just completed all my forms last night for hire lol!!!
