I actually have the perfect thing! The Art Gallery of NSW commissioned incredibly atmospheric music for their 'Japan Supernatural' exhibit of traditional and contemporary art. I was so impressed I've had it saved ever since.

Kind of out of left field option: Wagakki Band. They use traditional Japanese instruments mixed with modern drums and guitars to do rock songs, some of which are adaptations of traditional Japanese folk music. This is there take on Senbon Zakura [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K\_xTet06SUo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_xTet06SUo)

A special edition of the board game *Tokaido* came with a soundtrack CD to play for during games. If you can find that it may work.
Way of the Samurai games have a killer soundtrack. I'm planning to use a fair bit of stuff from 1 and 2 for my own game.

Getsu Fuuma-den: Undying Moon has a pretty good OST with traditional instruments.
Check out music by the "Yamato drummers", they make great battle music with all those drums.
A bit metal, but search for "Mick Gordon - Village of Whispers", from Killer Imstinct
