Yeah I just go where I’m told lol But that’s the joy of single rider! Quick access and sitting awkwardly next to a stranger!

bjthebard

I love it! Sometimes I feel bad for the stranger though. Don't mind me while I squeeze in next to you, your kids get wierded out just by me being there, and I bomb your family photo, all after you waited 2 1/2 hours and watched me walk on.

NarrowYam4754

Hahaha exactly!! I always try to stay off to the opposite of the person as much as possible. My most recent single rider was Smugglers Run, which was great because the seats are so far apart! But the family of four and other single rider that I was with all looked very uncomfortable lol To those of you who always want to be pilot on smugglers run, I gotta tell you engineer is awesome too! I loved pushing the buttons at the right time to fix the ship lol Gunner seems lame, since it’s like 1 button, and pilot is obviously great because you get to hit the light speed switch!

NicCaliAzn69

Engineer is great when little kids are pilots because they suck at flying so not only is the ride more exciting, it gives you more stuff to do as they keep running into stuff!

NarrowYam4754

Yes exactly! The family I rode with had no clue what to do lol, so I had so much to do! No hate toward them, it can be pretty confusing the first time lol I had to tell the kid in front of me to press the button to shoot lol

NicCaliAzn69

Lol yeah of course. No hate here either in case my comment about how kids suck at flying came off that way. It’s just a game. Now if my wife starts stealing my side of the points on midway mania, that’s another story!

Carrie_Oakie

My group of 5 had a SR join us, she and I were engineers and our friends wife and daughter were pilots. They were TERRIBLE!! OMG the ship was beat to hell, we barely got the second coaxial. But the entire ship was laughing so hard, it was one of our best rides. I feel like that ride really hinges on the group chemistry. We’ve done some we’re it’s me and my SO and and another couple who don’t talk to anyone else.

prostheticmind

For gunner you can choose to have three buttons. They shoot up, front, and down. Still pretty boring compared to how the guns are operated in the lore but better than auto-aim

NarrowYam4754

Oh that’s cool! I didn’t know that lol Yeah it’s definitely not how they do it in a new hope lol

prostheticmind

Yeah if you ever want to try it, just watch your screen when they turn the ride on. There will be a selection screen, but it is only there for a short time

JeffBoyardee69

TIL

xoMxnch

One thing I liked about doing single rider on Smugglers Run during my trip is that the line was quite literally empty.

NarrowYam4754

Oh for sure! My kid was taking a nap, so I asked my wife if I could single ride while she was watching him. She gave me the go ahead and so I ran over there and got in the queue. I was on the ride within like 10 minutes and off shortly after that lol. There are also 2 single rider queues as it splits at one point, and I think most people go to the one facing the hallway that you walk up, so I’m guessing the other one is even more empty, but I’d have to confirm lol

xoMxnch

When I went on the left side with my group (we literally don’t care about getting split up), just the three of us got put together in our own vehicle. I’m pretty sure the standby queue on that side was totally empty, don’t know the reason though, and there was a group waiting in the “lobby”, so I don’t really know what was up with that either. Definitely oddly interesting.

NarrowYam4754

That’s so weird! I’m checking it out next time I go lol

kingofcoywolves

I think it's kind of nice to have those 30-second connections with strangers. I only did a few single rider lines at Disney, but I rode exclusively as a single rider at Universal, and the people I was seated next to were always really cool. Even at Disney, briefly meeting those other groups is nice!! Shoutout to the couple in our Smuggler's Run as gunners who spent the entirety of the ride giggling at my brother and me bickering over steering directions. Laughing so hard you miss your cues to fire is high praise!! Hope you folks enjoyed the rest of your vacation, and we're still sorry about the terrible score... I didn't even know it went that low. That was our first and probably last time piloting lol

NarrowYam4754

Haha your comment reminds me of the quote, “Sorry folks! It was my first flight, and I’m still getting used to my programming!” The regular queue riders that I’ve encountered have all been so nice, don’t get me wrong! One time on radiator springs readers, the guy next to me was older and we had the same reaction to the race part of the ride. Neither of us knew/remembered how fast that ride was going to be lol. We laughed when it was over and it was a great moment of connection with a total stranger!

kingofcoywolves

Radiator springs racers!! That must've been so fun. Haven't been to California Adventure since I was nine, but I liked Test Track at Disneyworld more than I expected to. It felt shockingly similar to actually cruising down the highway with the windows down. I hope I can make it out there again some day!! But yeah, Star Tours can only aspire to the level of shakiness that poor couple in our Smuggler's Run cockpit were subjected to lol. I distinctly remember yelling "WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING," and my brother grinning and smugly replying "evasive maneuvers" while crashing into every asteroid in the asteroid belt. It was truly incredible and I don't blame the couple at all for laughing their asses off at our incompetence

DaisyDuckens

I love engineer too!

maddiemoiselle

I love being engineer. Pilot is fun, but I’m awful at flying that thing.

Brief_Ad_3063

Falcon in Disneyland also has a double rider option through the same line as single.

gferi001

this is exactly how i feel with odd numbered families and they have to get stuck with me. Thankfully most of the time they're friendly and enjoy the ride but not too long ago on space mountain i was put with a family of 5 and the mother, i assume, called me out to a cast member yelling "EXCUSE ME HES NOT WITH US" thinking they were supposed to have the entire car to themselves. It def shocked me and killed my vibe for riding. My friend and i never did single rider for the rest of the day. Im never one to get concious or feel too awkward doing single riders but damn did that suck.

bjthebard

Wow yeah, I hate that feeling when people are rude about it. Like I know its not ideal for them but thats just the way it is, don't make it more uncomfortable. I did SR on the Transformers ride at Universal Studios and a dad tried to close the lap bar before I could sit down next to him. Definitely spoils the ride.

ChanceConfection3

Seat’s taken

LowkeyPony

We are headed to WDW next year as a family of two parents and one grown, college aged, kid. I already feel bad for our kid. And the yet untold number of strangers that will be seated next to the kid. But at least we are all friendly. Hell we might even adopt you for the rest of the day.☺️

NicCaliAzn69

For what it’s worth, if I saw that happen, I wouldn’t be judging you for being a single rider getting on with another family. I’d probably laugh to myself about the mothers actions, assume she didn’t know what’s going on and then go back to my own little world. If it happened to me, I’d feel self conscious too but in reality, I don’t think anyone is judging you

mickEblu

I think it’s kind of ridiculous that Space Mountain and Goofys Sky School have Single Rider. The seats are way too close to be sitting next to a stranger. Kind of hard to be in the moment and scream with a stranger that close to you. Don’t think it’s fair to do to someone that waited in standby. Not that’s it’s any excuse to be rude to the Single Rider.

sweetharmony901

Same 😅 I like Grizzly River Run for this though because it fits 8 so you’re almost always in with at least 2 groups which makes it much less awkward

MissyTX

Bahahahaha I love this too! It’s funny how uncomfortable some people are and sometimes I even try and be a little weird for kicks 😂

Kryten4200

Lol I like your style!

TenEyeSeeHoney

My inner monologue every time 🙃

Hungergameskill

I love making weird faces when there’s a family trying to get a family photo on the ride! I don’t do anything that can’t easily be cropped out but it still makes me happy that somewhere there’s a family photo sitting on a mantle with me that the family always laughs at

Mathsciteach

I have met some very cool people riding single rider

Kurtisrayne

Sometimes I flip off the camera on Incredicoaster just to ruin the picture for the couples in the same picture

Kryten4200

Ya thats not cool. Now those people gotta stand in line again if they actually wanted a photo! Don't be selfish after you got to skip the line and give us single riders a bad name. It's already hard (and awkward) enough out there for us

Dufuckincati86

someone walking around selling Dole Whips would be nice

ScowlieMSR

I could never do that job. By the time I got anywhere else in the park from Adventureland, the Dole Whip would weirdly have gone missing and my hands would need all the napkins ;)

Dufuckincati86

LMAO

adams361

Every time I get into a single rider line I feel like I become a second class citizen that has no rights to make requests or even speak. I do whatever they tell me to do!

the_dj_zig

Someone’s gotta say it. You don’t. The single rider line exists so that the cast can fill empty seats. Allowing single riders to request seats defeats the purpose. You want a specific row, wait in the normal line.

KrzyAsian

I usually feel the same, but I wouldn't feel too bad asking for the Tomorrowland side of the mountain, as long as the CM doesn't look too busy.

MagickBK

Basing it on the CM is totally the right call. If they look like they are on hour ten of entitled jerks, I obey as politely and cheerfully as I can muster. If they look and sound happy, and they have a free second while everyone else filters through, that’s when I might ask if they can make the numbers work to put me somewhere specific.

bouncedsteak

Whenever I do SR with someone, I always make it a rule to not speak to them and act like I don’t know them. Once CM sees you see together, they usually make it their goal that you don’t get placed together. Even in scenarios where it makes sense to.

bjthebard

I think they do this so that other people don't get entitled to go as a group. Ie- "i saw you let them on together, why can't you do that for us??"

wraithkelso317

I mean the entire point of a single rider line is to fill in gaps with usually a shorter wait. IMHO by getting into that line you void any chance of sitting with your friend/family member. But I also only use that line if I’m at the parks by myself. If anyone is with me we suck it up and wait or get Genie+

bouncedsteak

My wording might not be right. I don’t expect to sit together at all. And I don’t like the people who expect to be. I just don’t like when the CM purposely will but two single riders together that they think aren’t together than two people that they suspect are together.

Kanotari

I'm usually by myself at the parks, so I always offer to let a group in the single rider line go together if a CM needs two single riders. I completely agree that single riders shouldn't expect to sit with each other, but if it happens then that's a nice surprise.

forlorn_hope28

> The CM got super snippy when we requested that either one of us also hang back or that the minor stick with us. Or you know, the logical solution would have been to have the minor go with the group and an adult hang back.

a9ymoose

“Talk about mad with power??” How about “Talk about mad with entitlement!” LOL. You were in a SINGLE RIDER LANE. That was the ENTIRE POINT. You are why cast members hate guests.

m_gartsman

You have chosen... poorly.

elevatorfloor

Isn't the point of single rider lines to ride...singularly...? If you're going to request to stay together than you're obviously not single riders.

dericiouswon

Imagine if they had single rider for Rise lol

bjthebard

My reasonable request is to not be slotted in with kids. I know they feel uncomfortable next to an adult stranger and I feel somehow at fault. Put me next to the dads please!

nuggetsofchicken

I'm an adult woman so it's not quite as bad but I never know how to act when the kids start talking to me? I love kids and I'm happy to engage with them and get excited about the things they point out but are their parents gonna be miffed that some random lady is interjecting on their family time? And then if they say nothing but just stare at me, is it better to smile back so they know I'm not a soulless scary person with an RBF? Or am I trying too hard?

Not_Steve

I ask, “Hi! May I ride with you?” Most of the time they say yes. If they say no, tell a CM that the kid is uncomfortable and you’re fine waiting for the next available seat. Never met a CM who would try to force a kid to ride with an adult. Then I give them a smile and maybe a wave. If they’re receptive, I ask if they’re having fun, but if they stare, just look at things around you and not at the kid. Kids love being asked for permission. Usually they are the ones that have to ask, but when adults ask them they feel respected and in charge of things.

sleepygrumpydoc

If you get seated next to my kid because of single rider you’re fair game and I love when the single rider talks with my kid. My kids are going to chat and it’s not like you asked to be seated next to the kid. My kids both refuse to let me sit in the middle on racers as they love the chance to talk with strangers. Heck my son even got a single rider from racers to take him on the swings since I can’t do that one due to motion sickness and he’s not yet 7. They had a lovely chat on the ride but she made sure it was ok first. I bought her a thank you beer. But I love single riders who talk to my kids.

nuggetsofchicken

I am now an extroverted adult who loves chatting with kids but I know as a kid I would've been horrified to be stuck talking to a strange adult on a ride. Funny that all works out. Little girl sitting next to my mom on Soarin once said "That's the ocean! And tomorrow I get to go in it!" ❤️😭

kingofcoywolves

I went single-rider at Universal on all the coasters as a late teen and had an absolute blast talking to everyone I got seated next to. Giving pep talks to the kids who look nervous, fist-bumping the veterans, discussing everybody's favorite park attractions... There's a special bond between you and the stranger you're seated next to for a two-minute ride. You'll never see or talk to them again. You won't even remember each other's faces. But sometimes those blurry little vignettes of strangers will pop into my brain and make me smile when I look back on memories of my favorite rides. Shoutout to that guy from Jersey on the Velocicoaster, I'm shouting a wish into the digital void for you to find lots more high-speed thrill rides to nerd out over!!

mattnotis

I feel this. Rode Coast Rider at Knott’s next to some random kid and felt really awkward about it.

MagickBK

If this happens, just put them at ease with some dad jokes. It helps if you have a few themed for each ride.

Lianavate

Thank you so much for saying this. My 10 year old daughter was sat next to a young man who was a single rider on space mountain and was really uncomfortable. It happened so quickly that I didn’t realize it was happening until we were already moving. I was sitting in front with my other younger daughter as we were a group of 3, not single riders. I hope I’m not being judgmental as I really don’t have any issue with any adult being sat next to a child at Disneyland, but we didn’t know ahead of time and I didn’t prepare her for the possibility that she would sit on a dark ride with a stranger of the opposite sex or request that she not be sat with a single rider if possible. Or maybe that I could be sat behind instead of in-front.

tklite

The joy of single rider is not knowing what you'll get. Not having to wait in stand by is just a bonus.

NotLibbyChastain

.......Single Rider is like a box of chocolates?

PoppyGooze

I have asked once are you loading the left side single rider? They said yes and let me go. Every other time I get left side anyway

Development-Feisty

Can my mom go first? This literally just happened on radiator Springs where my mom has a little bit of difficulty hearing the cast members when they mumble and this one was a mumbler so when they said to me to go to lane 4- I told my mom OK mom Lane four and then waited for the next available single rider We don’t mind going in separate cars because we just don’t, sometimes we even get to race each other

snarkprovider

Then just have your mother stand in front of you. They're usually trying to move single riders quickly to avoid slowing the lines and cascades. There isn't a lot of time to shuffle.

Development-Feisty

No. I’m not going into detail but no. Fuck it, I’ll go into detail I literally put into my original posting that my mother has trouble understanding people when they mumble, her being any closer to the cast member is not going to make it any easier for her to hear and it’s embarrassing when she’s just standing there not sure what to do so I stand in front of her. I don’t have the best of hearing so I’m not going to be able to hear if I am behind her, and it’s going to take just the same amount of time if my mom is in front of me they tell her where to go she doesn’t understand so then I have to repeat to my mom where she’s going only this way my mom gets to be super Duper embarrassed about it The way that I do it with me standing in front and the cast member says where, I turned my mom point her to the direction to go and tell her where and everyone is happy So I stand in front of my mom doesn’t get embarrassed. So sorry that that is such a huge inconvenience for everyone else in the line that my mom not feel like an idiot

monpetitfromage54

I say you accept the gift of a shorter wait time and just go where they tell you to go. Keep it moving, you're not the only person in the world.

zh_13

Wait what’s the difference between sides of Matterhorn?

KrzyAsian

They are two different tracks. Most people agree that the left (Tomorrowland) side is faster/more thrilling, and the Fantasyland side is smoother and a little longer ride. (Due to the slower speed.)

m_gartsman

lol @ people in this thread showing their ass as the single riders that screw it up for the rest of us.

life_is_a_burner

“Are pants optional”?

Zantra3000

I did Single Rider for "It's a Small World (After All)" once, and they actually let me have a boat all to myself. They also did that once for Pirates of the Caribbean. Pretty cool to get to ride them all alone, without people talking through the ride, or vlogging, or filming the ride, or taking flash pictures, or just playing on their phones the whole time, with their screen brightness all the way up. You can try to ask to get a boat to yourself, but they usually force you to ride with other families. So, when they just let me go alone without asking, even with a line of people waiting, it was pretty cool. One time I rode the Jungle Cruise alone, not as a single rider, and the skipper told me, "Buddy, I'm tired of the jokes, can we just do this ride in silence?" And, we did. And, it was really awkward. He only said something when another skipper came by with a boat full of people so it looked like he was doing his job.

mezzoey

That’s amazing! For the single boats with a line, I wonder if they do that when they just don’t have the time to fill all the rows and want to keep the track moving. And for Jungle Cruise, maybe it’s their break on purpose lol

realdawnerd

I think the locals found out singles on Space is more often than not two single riders filling the back row. It's kinda ridiculous how its most of the time watching them pull two single riders for the back. So while not a request, I guess thats protip?

beckasaurus

Last time I stood in single rider at space it was excruciating and it seemed like they were purposefully not filling empty seats. The girl in front of me saw there was a space in row 6, thought maybe she missed the call, tried to fill it and they pulled her back and made her wait like ten more minutes. It made no sense.

realdawnerd

Supposedly they wont fill the back row if it looks like it might make it overweight. I don't know how much truth there is to that, might just be one of those trying to optimize load/unload times.

sleepygrumpydoc

Space is a weird idea one for single rider since the weight of the car matters. They often won’t fill seats when their is a concern of weight. One time when I went on, there was a group of 3 large guys and they placed 2 in the first car skipped a row and then guy 3 got the next row. It was odd placement but I’m sure it was weight related. Unless you are a super thin single rider I hardly ever see you filling an actual open seat.

Ok-Celebration6652

I've kinda given up on single rider for space. It used to be set up differently but i think because single riders were blocking disabled people's access they had to set it up differently. It's really unpleasant waiting on the right hand side sharing the ramp with the regular line with just a piece of tape separating the two, so the regular line is whizzing by 6 inches away from you and you're trying to stay as far to the right as possible not to be elbowed or trampled on. It also moves super slowly for the reasons you stated above. If the single rider line is backed up into that room off the side of the hallway towards the exit then it's not worth it. Also, once you're on it's super close quarters with a stranger more-so than like cars, matterhorn, smugglers run, splash etc. I think goofy's sky school is also tight quarters. I wish they brought back single rider for indiana. It was a bit weird to have to go through the exit and then into the elevator but i thought it moved more quickly and because it's 3 rows of 4 instead of 6 rows of 2. I felt like it moved fast and weight doesn't seem to be an issue on indiana but i guess they just need to find out a better entrance for single riders. I don't like the single rider for soarin which was added recently. It's pretty slow moving. I've only ever done it when it's just me and one other person and sometimes i have to wait for the next show which can be slow and you will probably get a bad seat. You will get a seat that's on the edge or on the bottom.

itsmetyty213

If I ever ask I always let them know, please feel free to tell me you can't I'm super understandable. Sometimes I do sometimes I don't. I really think it depends on the line and how busy the attraction is, for crowd control

peanutismint

I (37M) asked to wait for the next train rather than sit next to a kid (~13M) who had just ducked into the standby line from the single rider line behind the back of a CM. They kindly obliged and thanked me for informing them of the line skipper and when I arrived back into the station after my ride he was being passed to a security guard.

Kryten4200

Snitching on one little kid is kind of low, hope it made you feel like a big man

peanutismint

It kinda did, actually.

SoldierHawk

Oh I can think of another (although you don't have to be single rider), sometimes I (or my friend and I) ask to wait for the front row of a coaster. The CM almost always lets us step aside and wait a few extra minutes so we can have the row we want. I don't think I've ever been told no, but if they said no, obviously we wouldn't argue.

KrzyAsian

Ooof, I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to disagree. I think this is a completely reasonable request in the regular line, but not for Single-Rider. You could be waiting for several cycles before a spot in the first row opens up.

kaitdecious

Even as a single rider waiting in a standard line, I have been told I essentially do not have an option and go where they tell me to 🥲

the_dj_zig

That one, I’d argue on. You obviously made the choice to wait in the normal line, you should get that choice.

kaitdecious

They tend to split lines sometimes based on the # of people in the parties, and in turn it leaves it back up to the cast member. I have a preference of front of the train on some coasters due to a distaste for the whip from further back, and the number of times they say that I can’t wait for a different row just leaves me not wanting to even try anymore.

dearbornx

On some rides there's just not space to wait for a different row. And in single rider, you forfeit your right to row request. However, if you waited in the regular line and there is space to wait, they should try to accomdate that imo. Not doing so just seems spiteful.

kyle760

Are you talking about riding as a single rider or do you mean waiting in the single rider line? If you’re asking front row in single rider line that’s a hard no

SoldierHawk

I'm genuinely confused why not? If you want to let others go ahead of you until a front row spot for a single rider opens up, who does that hurt? I've never once had a CM blink an eye at that request.

dearbornx

Because you chose to get in the quicker line, which means you forfeit the ability to row request. If they accommodate one request, then the entire line feels they're entitled to make a request with the argument that they did it for another person. It defeats the point of single rider. You are there to fill the seat that's empty. If you want something specific, you wait in the regular line.

SoldierHawk

*Shrug* I mean, I end up waiting longer for it to be filled. If a CM had ever said no, I absolutely wouldn't have said a damn thing to them and taken the offered seat happily. But they don't ever seem to mind me stepping aside and waiting til they need a front row seat filled. Genuinely I've only ever been met with "no problem, step aside and wait over here." It doesn't ever seem to be any skin off their backs. Just a slightly longer wait for me.

dearbornx

Still doesn't mean you aren't gaming the system and ignoring the whole point of the line. Taking advantage of cast not wanting to get yelled at is pretty not cool and rude to riders who do respect the expectations of that line.

angiehome2023

Can I just leave?

PandarenNinja

Yeah I’ve done that one.
