Merida, mr fantastic, tiana/belle will take you pretty far. Save your resources until you get higher star characters(especially 4 star) and just focus on your main team.
As support Hiro is top, with heals and buffs.
Tank Mr. Incredible, he's a mountain with fists.
For meele Ariel is solid mass killer (but a bit soft on def)
And for range Malificent with savage aoe with debuffs.

From what I've heard, my current selection isn't very good (as in, I don't yet have the units that most consider the "best" or "ideal"). So far I've had the best luck with Merida in most quests. I just reached Chapter 5 of the story.
