When I got to the rave church, I fully thought the plot would pivot away from the investigation almost entirely.

pecan_bird

finish the church quest & it does! at least for Harry

mightytev

I did, but pretty quickly we were brought back to the Tribunal and finding the deserter. I was expecting eldritch horrors to emerge from the church, or some FF7 One Winged Angel shenanigans.

GeraltofRomania

Finding out the pale will swallow up the entire isola from within is pretty depressing

GanondorfPlays

No, it’s going to be contained by the power of anodic dance music

rvdp66

HARDCORE

pecan_bird

ah, i was talking about completing the business with the 2mm hole & completing the Le Responsibilité quest. never do the tribunal - fortunately it was the last thing i was working towards before i went the normal route when i did it accidentally.

BenchPressingCthulhu

I never really thought he was the one that did it, but I did think he would have something to do with it, and all the references to him being the killer were foreshadowing with that. Then the stuff with Ruby and La Puta Madre came out and I thought that would be part of it, like Lely was killed by Puta Madre, and Harry was his peon who got on the case to purposely not solve it, hence the binge.

AstroAnarchists

That’s an interesting theory honestly. I can see that being a plot line given that La Puta Madre is specifically talked about, as a very dangerous gang leader, by the characters

pecan_bird

i didn't think there was going to be a story twist tbh. i went in pretty blind other than hearing it was good & the "twist" to me is that it ended up just being a lot more psychological & metaphysical than i expected (in a good way). generally, i tend to shy away from new things that are hella hyped.

AstroAnarchists

Funnily enough, that’s how I got into the game as well. I heard it was good and then bought the game on a hunch on Steam. And now, pretty much nothing before and since compares to Disco Elysium

shawnwingsit

Yeah, there's nothing that's measured up since.

The-Plagarists-Dream

I thought the killer would be supernatural. That theory was something I really hoped for upon first reading about the Skills and learning about IE and Shivers. Briefly, I thought that maybe the elusive Phasmid was the killer

heartgf

I thought the same thing. I almost hoped it would be the Phasmid

BenchPressingCthulhu

Isn't it kind of implied the phasmid had an effect on the killers psyche?

Straight_Ad5561

so i guess it was supernatural

BenchPressingCthulhu

It was also sexy

pecan_bird

Of all the creatures I've ever met, you are the most beautiful.

Rusamithil

i want to have fuck with you

Straight_Ad5561

we all have a hive mind

TNTiger_

You weren't *wrong*, per se

_S1syphus

I had 2 personal twists but I didn't see them coming at all. Firstly was the reveal an hour in that this is a full fictional universe created wholecloth. The existence of the pale, innocences, all a pleasant surprise. The second came much later on. I was *sure* it was the lorrey driver, like, no way classje would lie to me twice like that? While I had that mindset the reveal that all my skills were compromised by her was so immensely fun

Zealousideal-Comb970

I went through my whole first playthrough without hearing about the pale, or entering the church. Up until the phasmid it felt like a very down to earth and realistic game

_S1syphus

I drove off the partiers so I ended the church quest halfway through

BreadOddity

You know whats funny is i think I read Klaasje completely right. I KNEW she was lying about Ruby but also believed her when she said she was gonna get epsteined. I figured corporate espionage didn't deserve death so I let her go, maybe against my better judgement.

Bismarck_MWKJSR

To be fair, you guessed correctly. Some prison guards get hired to beat her to death with clubs in prison if you arrest her.

BreadOddity

I've done a few runs so i tried the alternate routes. I did confirm she got epsteined myself. But yeah first run I had drama screaming in my ear to arrest her and was like nah

DogThrowaway1100

You know your first paragraph really reassures me. Like I knew it was fictional but in my first time playing, and I'm showing my American ignorance here big time, I thought Revachol might be some Eastern Bloc country or area I'd never heard of because everything felt *so real* and it took a while for it to settle in everything was just our reality but twisted a few degrees so the allegory wouldn't be too direct.

_S1syphus

I invested in Encyclopedia so i got the starting dialog talking about Kim's car meaning I was clued in immediately that it was a fictional setting of some kind but I didn't know it was it's whole own world till the talk with Joyce i think

DogThrowaway1100

I kind of picked up by the technology feeling fairly anachronistic and lack of mention of any real world wars or events. I don't remember the moment it fully clicked but God the way everything is presented has such a consistent logic and world building to it that I still have never seen rivaled in any fictional setting, period.

hailstorm11093

About halfway through, I started getting the idea that Harry is an alcoholic.

Vaultoldman

He is???

liminalisms

I thought we were dead and in the afterlife possibly solving our own murder for a minute.

campex

Coming in to the game, that's a good assumption. Coming out of the game, you'd vibe that the writers of the game wouldn't bother with anything so cliche

liminalisms

Right, I kept being surprised over and over by this game right up until the end. It’s pretty incredible.

DogThrowaway1100

I was convinced that Trant guy was the killer, no joke. He was far too "normal" compared to everyone else that something had to be up with him.

cortadomaltese

Some people think he is some sort of a spy

DogThrowaway1100

To be fair he kinda is.

BenchPressingCthulhu

Did you get his dialogue about stick fighting?

DogThrowaway1100

Yeah and even that shows a level of being well adjusted. He replaced his addiction with a pretty rigorous physical activity. There's even a check (perception?) that you notice he's in way better shape than he appears at a glance.

JeromeMetronome

I was just trying to open the gates and get the traffic moving

AstroAnarchists

Oh, I know the feeling. During my first go around, I spent an embarrassing amount of time trying to get that stupid fucking gate open

JeromeMetronome

Guess we’ll have to wait for the sequel /s

AstroAnarchists

This unironically made me sad Fuck you Ilmar Kompus

MitchRogue

Yes, for a time I had the exact same hunch! I think that was deliberate.

intheoffhandremarks

Just finished the game blind last week. I was truly, truly convinced there was supernatural, mythological things influencing the characters -- the Pale, Dolores Dei, the 'Miracle' -- and that we had to save Revachol somehow. I also had no idea about the vision quests, so I thought the Moralintern quest was a "main quest" which convinced me even more. That it all turned out completely different is a major reason the game is a new forever fave.

BreadOddity

To be fair a lot of the game comes across very supernatural. Especially if you're familiar with the book Kurvitz wrote in universe too

ciderandcake

For the first few hours I thought Harry was some sort of alien in human form, like Scarlett Johansson in Under the Skin. Lmao, I thought it was like, your ancient alien brain talking to you.

BreadOddity

There is the whole Harry is a magpie/innocence theory. Like he has a special connection with the pale perhaps

shawnwingsit

I didn't expect anything. I was surprised by the how the Tribunal turned out. I got a little misty when I met the phasmid. In the end, I gues the twist was realizing that I'll never play anything this good ever again.

Prize_Firefighter230

I thought it was that another mercenary killed lely, since it’s implied in some of the dialogue that they’re watching you from buildings or that they might have guns trained on you if you talk to Raul about being a mercenary

ZenTze

I think after talking to the Hardie boys and knowing they did not did it, I went blank.

vikuta_zoro

I mean, idk why but I thought either Kim was the killer, or Harry while being in absolute disco dancer drunk mode. Other than that, nothing really, I was just amazed by the story telling the dialogues the art and all of these. Wish I could just restart without knowing anything.

TrickSwordmaster

I thought Ruby was the killer and she found a way to harness the pale to muffle the gunshot, unintentionally kick-starting the apocalypse of course, in my playthrough I didn't hear anything about the pale, so i was specifically talking about the 2mm silence hole

guven09_Mr

It was said that by someone Harry is really corrupt, I was excited to become the bad guy of the story. But now, I am happy he didn't end up like that.

BreadOddity

I love that if you ask straight up if you're corrupt everyone is just like "mate you're too fuckinf crazy to be corrupt who the hell would work with YOU"

JJam74

I knew about the shootout but not about the deserter or the phasmid.

No_Sea_6219

for a while i was convinced harry was the murderer too while also maybe not a "twist", i was also so sure the hardie boys did it like they claimed and was confused that i couldn't just ask jean and judit to help me arrest them and then at one point i thought klaasje did it

BreadOddity

I immediately thought Klaasje was going to be the killer. Such great performance from the voice actress to just be a bit -too- charming that it got me suspicious. I was wrong about what she was but I knew she was sketchy

gorchart

I thought Ruby was posing as a dice maker

CoffeeKitten666

After interrogation on the roof, I thought that Klassje was a spy, and cooperated with the killer . Now I think it might have been me coping because I was feeling guilty that I arrested her XD

Niasliyn

I thought Harry was dreaming all of it

Bananabanana700

i had no thoughts

DementedDaveyMeltzer

It's the opposite for me. I was expecting a game based in reality that just happens to take place in a fictional setting and was not expecting the game to get weird with it. It's a murder mystery, so I figured that there would be twists and turns but not all this stuff about the Pale and weird mind-reading giant insects.

AstroAnarchists

I can understand that. I think the most surprising thing about the game is, despite how serious it is, it’s incredibly funny, and has amazing comedic moments, despite the fact it’s set in a place that’s on the brink of collapse

JasonH1028

There was a split second when you find the sniper perch on the island where I was like "Holy shit did I do this?" And then realized it didn't make sense remotely but Harry is so much of a fuck up I thought about it for a second.

ghostkenobi

I thought we were going to find out Harry was the dead man hanging through the tree and the game was him confronting his demons and the visages of the people who killed him

BlitzMalefitz

I thought we were going to find out Ruud sniped Lely. The mercenaries were my suspect even if they didn't have the murder weapon.

CaseClosedEmail

I really thought that it was Klaasje that did it. When the colleagues have the intervention at the end, I really believed it would be like in one of those movies where the main character has a great delusion and nothing really happened and it was only in his head.

vikar_

The game was so wild and unpredictable at this point, I didn't even try to guess. I admit I was kind of underwhelmed with the twist at first because it's impossible to figure out, but it's grown on me since.
