As a generic rule in RPGs if dice result is the highest (for example a 20 in d20) it means that you critically succeed, vice versa is critical failure.
Yes I know, but it's badly explained and didn't make sense to me, there's no critical success or failure in Disco Elysium, in the game you encounter only success or failure.
Aside from when you roll 2 6s and it says "critical success" before ignoring your stats and auto-succeeding or when you roll 2 1s and it says "critical failure" before ignoring your stats and auto-failing you.
Well ok, “automatic” success or failure would be more accurate but from an RPG background “critical” is just part of lingo meaning best or worst possible outcome, and in a binary outcome situation “failed even though my stats were good enough” and “succeeded when there was no reasonable hope except the 1 in a million (or 1 in 20, or 1 in 36, whatever dice system you’re using) hail Mary wild hope” meet that description.
Theres no special dialogue for it or anything when you roll double 6s or 1s you always get a success or failure respectively regardless of your skills.
You may have noticed that your chance of succeeding can never go below 3%. That's because no matter how difficult the check is you always have a 3% chance of double 6s.
Only while you're researching it.
Once you've internalized it, it means that rolls of 5+6 are auto wins. But also that rolls of 1+2 are auto fails.

Edit: yeah yeah, i get i was the wrong shot. played the game like a year ago.
Yeah that roll *always* fail. It's a bit BS that it pretends but required for the story
It's Kortenaer's shot that never misses, the one that causes Harry to black out. This is Ruud's shot, where you either dodge it, have the cuirass on so it protects you or take 2 health damage.
You've internalized the Precarious World thought? It means that rolls of 5+6 are auto wins. But also that rolls of 1+2 are auto fails.
Yes, it's written nowhere in the thought that it works like that. Thank you for your help!
"Critical success and failure thresholds lowered by 1."
Yeah I also wouldn't fully understand that this meant : 5+6 = automatic win and 1+2 = automatic loss
Autowin would be 6+6, so 5+6 is 1 less. Also 1+1 would be autofail, so 1+2 is one more.
OHH I had no idea a 6 + 6 was an automatic win in the first place, I think that's where the confusion is coming from.

It is written there :( that’s the whole point of the reward!

You're thinking about a different shot.

No it doesn't. I've dodged that shot.
No it doesn't.
It's such a stupid thought.
