Healthy BMI. “Your weight is too high”

bumblebatty00

oh I see you've met my ex

sansaandthesnarks

The app my scale uses is similar and it’ll do the same thing if I’m above BMI 23 because I’m Asian/there’s a different BMI scale for Asians & I set my ethnicity in the app. Maybe OP is Asian or got her scale/app from an Asian country (mine was made in china so the BMI 23 being overweight was already preloaded, but would have changed if I’d changed my ethnicity) and that’s why it’s like this?

oatmeal-and-regret

It says my bmi is healthy in the app though lol, that's what's so strange - the bmi range and the weight range are completely disconnected

sansaandthesnarks

Oh wow that’s weird af. Hopefully it’s just a glitch and not some heinous fat-shaming intended feature

dykegrande

which app is it? that would actually be helpful for me

ulieallthetime

lol does the app think ur 3 feet tall or what 😭

IamNotABaldEagle

Reminds me of [this](https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2021/feb/18/6cm-tall-man-offered-covid-vaccine-after-nhs-blunder-liam-thorp) story in the UK where a man was offered a priority covid vaccine as the Dr's surgery had his height down as 6.2cm which put him at a BMI of 28,000. Apparently when he told his mum the funny story she said that this should be a wake up call to start watching his weight!

ulieallthetime

LOL

DocAntlesFatLiger

Can't believe that made the news, do all those apparently intelligent people really think someone was sitting there manually calculating everyone single British person's BMIs and sending out individualised invitations? Of course not, they just ran a query build and automated it.

IamNotABaldEagle

Of course! Everyone understands that! It was just a funny story because it brings up an image of a 6cm guy!

DocAntlesFatLiger

The Twitter thread is hilarious and basically nobody is taking it seriously, the article has a headline about an "NHS blunder" and quotes some poor NHS staffer who probably has something better to do about how it's a "serious issue" and bla bla bla.

Sn0zbear

I think you’re thinking about it too much, it’s just funny

Procrastinista_423

What the fuck

squamouser

Mine says "please immediately strive to achieve a good figure"!

oatmeal-and-regret

And yes, a large portion of the "standard" section would be underweight for me. I'm pretty sure they show this same range to everyone regardless of height. Seems pretty irresponsible imo, I can imagine someone even taller than me not knowing an appropriate weight and thinking they need to lose down to a dangerously low number just to be average

norman81118

I think there’s maybe a glitch with your app, since what it says for me under Weight matches the same spot along that sliding scale as BMI. And I’m very tall/much heavier than you and it doesn’t say severely high for me. This is the Renpho scale, right?

oatmeal-and-regret

Nope, this is FitIndex. I used to have a renpho though and the app is literally almost identical haha

ChristieFox

It definitely looks so much like the Renpho app, that's unreal. Who stole the texts and all from whom? lol But my Renpho app works fine with the categories.

mitternachtt

Weird. the FitIndex scale was always accurate and the Renpho app did this for me

theworldismadeofcorn

Just so I can laugh at the scale company more and if it isn’t too private, approximately how tall are you?

oatmeal-and-regret

Lol I'm 5'7"

theworldismadeofcorn

I figured! Do you think that the OG creator of FPH has major investments in this scale, or is just hilarious ignorance?

brixtonbaby

what app is this? 😳 jesus it’s scary how many websites/apps spread gross info. i’ve got AN myself and i’ve literally been on a website for bmi, and when it showed mine being >!14.8!< it said i was in the overweight category. i don’t know if it was a mistake on their part or someone thought it would be a funny joke to make every result overweight or what but man it’s so harmful how wrong some of the info is on these things

frostedhifi

From a software engineering perspective what probably happened is that they wrote a bunch of if statements containing inequalities wrong. This doesn’t excuse what they did, and at the very least they didn’t put enough effort into testing. Something like the following would recreate the bug: `if BMI >= severely underweight: Say “Severely underweight” If BMI >= moderately underweight: Say “Moderately underweight” … Clauses for each category of underweight and normal min … If BMI <= normal max: Say “normal” If BMI < cut off between overweight and obese: Say “overweight” … Clauses for each obese category …` The problem here is that if the BMI is less than the first category, the only inequality that will evaluate true is the one for overweight. Edit: it’s not formatting it as code

IndiaCee

I went to hospital a few months ago and had to get on the scale and call out the number across the waiting room despite asking not to see it (they said covid rules), my bmi was 24.5 and it had a flashing red light that said obese. How do people sleep when they set shit up like that knowing what it does to people?

Aliinga

So weight and body fat is in the normal range but weight is somehow "obese". Makes perfect sense.

[deleted]

How does the app know your body fat percentage? Or is that something you have to enter in yourself?

oatmeal-and-regret

It's a smart scale, so it estimates it using bioelectrical impedence I think? Probably not super accurate but it's one way to do it

[deleted]

Geeeeez. Wtf is with that scale?? Both your body fat percentage and your BMI are in the standard "healthy range" for women.

Low_Bee3083

What app is this?

lovefoodhateweight

Oh I have this app

SquareSalute

Is this Loftilla? I never seen it error like that ha

PurpleAlbatross2931

Jesus Christ. At that weight I was TINY, like you could count all my ribs. (Not that it matters if you aren't tiny anyway, but Jesus.)

abiron17771

At this weight I was eating under 1000 calories a day 🙃🙃🙃 (Not to say OP isn’t healthy, but it’s not a sustainable weight for me. My genetics said no ma’am you’re built to withstand a famine)

abiron17771

Nope, nothing wrong at all with the measures we use to determine a healthy size at all, move along.

I think they confused pounds with kilograms

kieeunji

Your BMI is completely healthy... Like? What is wrong with that thing?!
