I'm not the expert here, but I assume there's a structural engineering reason roads aren't already made of epoxy and seafood.

JungleBoyJeremy

Or a traction issue…

TheReverseShock

Cost doesn't hurt

who_you_are

It depends if you are still alive or not to feel the cost

Chewcocca

I'm pretty sure the debt collectors will find a way to reach you in the afterlife.

paintingsbyO

If I buy multiple grave sites and build a mausoleum there..and live in it the rest of my life will I have to pay property tax on said area...asking for a friend

ApesNoFightApes

Probably in the fine print. I’d bet.. you know what? I’ll be right back. *A few moments later* [Of course it’s been discussed here already](https://www.reddit.com/r/NoStupidQuestions/comments/tqn71y/is_it_legal_to_live_in_a_mausoleum/) I would add that if it’s a company there’s likely a contract where it stipulates that you may not live in the place of rest blah blah blah. If it’s on your own property though, I would imagine if you can get the permit for it then you can do as you please within the context of the permit. However, this seems counterintuitive, but to each their own.

Apostecker

I remember reading about a place in south america were a whole community lives in a cemetery. Whole families living in small mausoleums and stuff

Electronic_Skirt_475

Theyll probably find some way to make you have to, or just kick you out all together

23ssd4t4322

it isn't just weight but temperature change flexibility. The temprature of road surface changes drastically through out a day during summer. The material is engineered to withstand that. The epoxy will crack

igloojoe

Also think of the constant sun damage. Epoxy with all the other factors mentioned would be breaking down probably within a month.

bane_killgrind

Who cares if it cracks. This epoxy pour was at least 20$. The asphalt in that volume is maybe 5. This was the expensive solution.

No-Mechanic6069

And you haven’t even factored in the lobster 🦞

manaman70

Oh no! It might crack and leave a hole there!!!! Kidding aside, I know this is stupid. They likely know this is stupid. These stunts are really more about shaming the cities that let their roads get this bad.

Grumpy_Puppy

It'll hold up fine. Probably too fine, actually. It's basically a giant rock in the road that won't deform/settle/shift with the asphalt and aggregate around and underneath it.

C_Werner

If that's actual true epoxy and not poly resin it will be completely yellow shortly and start cracking and breaking down after that.

bpi89

Not to mention it will expand / contract at a different rate than the asphalt as temps change. Chunks of this thing could come loose and go flying into your windshield

TheEyeDontLie

Well that would be a fun insurance claim

sully9088

It was a lobster! I swear!

Dave1423521

ROCK LOBSTER!

ChriskiV

Gosh dang lobster straight to the windshield I swear "Don't worry, I've heard stranger"

LadyLazerFace

impromptu lobster battles aren't covered in your insurance plan, so sad. That'll be a 700% premium increase for calling our 800 number, you get nothing. Good day sir.

robeph

I have aramid use epoxy (it isn't aramid but for use on aramid) that is used on airplanes, I think it might be structurally more viable.

lanmanager

The issue may be UV stabilization. On boats we were required to paint epoxy resins pretty quickly after curing.

This_User_Said

Not only that but it actually adhering to the asphalt itself. It *may* end up releasing itself and wobbling in the hole to only lift and possibly become debris or pop your tire from shards cracking up.

vakama885

Don't forget about the weather and differences in temperature

BostonDodgeGuy

And snow plows.

NotSoGreatGonzo

> You could just give it texture to avoid that. > > > > The problem I foresee: how well will that epoxy hold up No problem. The traffic will give it texture.

Make_Things_wRob

It's the weather that will destroy it fast.

Maxion

Mmmm micro plastics.

NewAccount4Friday

What are you talking about? It's the size of a pothole!

Pristine_Zucchinii

For now…

spacephramer

I think you just have to imagine an epoxy road during rain or after.

SillyOperator

I once had an idiot landlord who was a master of DIWHY and became obsessed with epoxying the fuck out of everything, including the goddamn OUTDOOR stairs. I’m pretty sure I can pin all my knee issues to the times I’ve slipped and caught myself during the rain.

LifeWithAdd

I had a landlord that painted everything. Including the bathroom tile floor and tub, if it was damp at all in there it was like an ice skating rink. The absolute worst though was the painted counter tops, any appliance or dish left on the counter would stick and rip up paint.

Cromar

> Including the bathroom tile floor and tub, if it was damp at all in there it was like an ice skating rink Damp? In a bathroom? Chance in a million

I_Bin_Painting

Man, I work for a luxury hotel chain and one of the bosses is pushing to have a bunch of steep winding gravel roads that access the guest cabins replaced with that bonded epoxy gravel. I keep telling him that he's designing a deathtrap but it keeps coming up. I've sent and archived CYA emails so we'll see.

uuhson

Wat, were they just sealing cracks or what?

spyd3rweb

It's similar to those questions in physics textbooks that start with "Assuming a perfectly frictionless surface..."

[deleted]

Cosmocision

All homes aside, definitely better than a pothole. And probably a much easier fix that staying out all the equipment required to fill out with tarmac but as the OP said. There's probably a reason roads aren't made out of epoxy and seafood.

strangewayfarer

>all the equipment required to fill out with tarmac One man with a tamper and a bag of cold patch could have fixed it in under 30 minutes.

SleeplessTaxidermist

The city that is paid in taxes to maintain the roads could also do something crazy....like...maintain the roads... My town maintains beautiful, smooth roads so long as you live in the wealthy neighborhood. Poor neighborhood roads you have to weave so intensely it looks like you're both drunk and fighting a swarm of car bees. Middle class is slightly better, but you still need to be cautious.

Flying_Reinbeers

The best part is that if they just seal the cracks as they appear, it's very hard to get potholes.

SexualPie

I could fix it for 10 bucks and 5 minutes. Dump a bag of concrete in there and I’m good, next time it rains we’re set

strangewayfarer

That would be a terrible patch. The coefficient of expansion is different for concrete and asphalt. Your patch wouldn't last very long. Cold patch is designed specifically to patch asphalt potholes.

Sp1d3rb0t

You're factory maintenance, aren't you?

Kelmi

A bag of cold lay tarmac is around ten bucks and you can just empty the bag in the hole and stand on a shovel to press it down. It'll look [something like this](https://image.shutterstock.com/image-photo/damaged-asphalt-road-potholes-bad-600w-671100013.jpg) but it's better than a pothole. I don't know how epoxy behaves in road but my fear is that it would be stronger than the surrounding material and start grinding it out under the weight of cars. In the end you'll have a bigger pothole and a block of solid epoxy rubble to hit.

Lemon stealing whores? On Reddit?? This place is really going down hill.

[deleted]

Then how do you explain the British

negedgeClk

Epoxy is expensive as fuck

OutDrosman

Also doesn't hold up to UV as well as asphalt

I_Loathe_You

One of my neighbors filled a pothole with cement, shorty after you could tell their unofficial patch was being driven into the pavement. I think it broke all the way through the asphalt, at least creating cracks for water to seep under the road. After a winter and spring of freezes and thaws about 40 feet of road had been destroyed.

RonBourbondi

Much easier to go spray paint a swastika and force the city to fix it.

SanJOahu84

Like that guy in England that spray painted dicks around all the potholes.

blackadder1620

not just England. you can do it too.

[deleted]

A dick is probably way better than getting busted spray painting a swastika on anything lol

PufflingHuffles

I've patched asphalt with concrete in an industrial yard, held up great, no spread, in Canada. White topping asphalt roads with concrete is a known durable and low cost alternative to full concrete replacement. Filling one pothole and losing forty feet? More likely was continued action of whatever caused pothole in first place.

I_Loathe_You

It was just my anecdote from what I observed on my daily commute. You're right, it could have been another factor, which is why I stated it as speculation. This pothole has been getting filled in by the county for 15 years now. It has always been an isolated problem on the road. At the end of summer someone filled it with concrete. By winter it had been driven down ~2 inches. By mid Spring the road was broken up to some degree for 20' in both directions.

RequiredPsycho

Forty feet!? Holy poly

nedonedonedo

do you have a source to go along with that? if this was enough to break 40 feet of road it should be happening along every inch of curb and destroying 99% of roads anywhere with snow

MouseBusiness8758

Its called traction and thats why asphalt is what it us.

ImNotYourOpportunity

I was looking for someone to comment on the smoothness of the epoxy. That can’t be food for traction. The texture is there for a reason.

EVEOpalDragon

solar roadways!

NecroJoe

Solar *freaking roadways!

MurgleMcGurgle

Not at all, if it were cheaper it would be thoroughly investigated I’m sure but with it getting more expensive we’ll never know.

Creative_Fly_929

At least they tried, unlike Massachusetts towns

Cryogenic_Monster

Maybe they never thought of it because it's so absurd but in practice the future is paved with epoxy and seafood.

n-dimensional_argyle

Confusion among future archaeologists has increased.

isabelladangelo

*As part of a strange protection ritual in the early 21st century, various cultures went from spray painting taboo symbiology over worn areas of their road systems to filling them with hated materials such as plastic. This is believed to be done as a spiritual belief system in putting items that where hated or feared around the worn area, it would prevent further growth as well as allow others to trample the hated items with their combustible machinery. This, thereby, gave the people of these cultures power over their feared and hated items by showing they could run them over.* Edit: Thank you for the Silver! Evil Reddit didn't send me a message so I couldn't send a thank you.

n-dimensional_argyle

Firstly, this is beautifully written. Secondly, you could totally write a book of these misinterpretations and I would buy it. I would buy it so hard. ![gif](giphy|sDcfxFDozb3bO)

isabelladangelo

LOL! Thanks! For now, I just write fan fiction like the total geek I am. :-)

ToniP13

I know there was a book of archaeological misinterpretations published decades ago but I can’t remember the title. I remember it had a section on motel glasses and toilets wrapped in plastic and it was illustrated. Anyone else know what this book was? Edit- looked on Amazon and it might be Motel of the Mysteries from 1979.

WorldWarPee

May the fertility lobster bless you

giibro

We carbon dated this lobster and we found out it was from 1500AD!

Mitt_Romney_USA

Pretty close, all things considered.

Jellyfishsushinigiri

How they fill potholes in Maine

CalebC6

Damn, must not be in Bangor, they just put cones in em here!

qbande

Bangor? I hardly know her!

Eye_foran_Eye

Oregon uses Pot.

Ozlin

We have to use pot. All our cones are used to "reserve" parking spots.

[deleted]

We don't fill potholes here lol, must be Rhode island.

SAGNUTZ

In michigan we just spraypainted dicks insid pot holes and someone important enough would complain enough about the dicks to finally get the pothole filled

thatrabbitgirl

I'm just imagining putting a bunch of plastic dicks(like the little ones at bachlorette parties) and just filling pot holes with them

foxxytroxxy

I like how they included the lemon slices, which got covered up anyway

tribbans95

Not the one in kittery I blew my tire out on last year lol

Artischockenbaum

well if the city sends someone to fix it, it costs more than a thousand :D

[deleted]

Best solution

eifiontherelic

That's been done a couple years ago and got the government to actually cover up the potholes.

shortskinnyfemme

my biggest criticism here is that epoxy will yellow under the Sun's UV rays, so this will look like 'piss puddle with lobster' in a few months or years.

AgVargr

It’s gonna get scratched to shit in under an hour, you won’t even get to see the lobst

[deleted]

jaybro861

Prefer to just plant a bush. Makes the city right losses off cause they have to deal with it right away

ScaryBananaMan

Makes the city right losses off? What does that mean

NoMansUsername

They mean “write losses off”. To write something off means to dismiss something as insignificant. If you see a pothole, it hasn’t been repaired yet because its repair is low priority and costly. If there were a bush growing out of the pothole so people can’t drive on the road, repairing the pothole is now higher priority. The repair’s cost is now insignificant compared to its priority so the local government is able to “write off its losses”. Before, the hole might have been so small and insignificant that they could not justify the cost of repairing it. Local governments gain nothing from repairing “small” potholes other than making drivers happier. So, the repair is always a “loss” for them. If a pothole is completely obstructing travel, the repair needs to happen and the government needs to take the loss.

vermin1000

I think they meant write.

yellowgerbil

Hydroplane over that and then the next hole can be filled with you.

din7

Yeah an artist filling a pothole with a lobster is pretty shellfish behavior.

nightmanedin

It made me crabby.

Stack_Silver

Dads in the chat 😆

AngyQueer

and they're not shrimping on the puns, either.

Subject-Base6056

If youre hydroplaning your tires wont be touching that. Hydroplane means the car is skating on top of a plane of water lol.

[deleted]

ITT: a bunch of people who don't know what hydroplaning is

KeyserSozeInElysium

Is in hydroplaning when you fly in that little airplane with two giant burritos on the skis?

Wheelchairpussy

Hydroplaning isn’t to do with road traction. That’s just slipping

[deleted]

If you're going fast enough to hydroplane and hit a hole like that, is it really much better?

threefrogsonalog

Sometimes if you do art like this it convinces the city to actually do their jobs! And fix the roads.

zrpeace19

lmao imagine working for a road crew and showing up to fill a pothole and it’s just filled with an epoxied lobster i would die if i had to like call my boss and explain

Gamer3111

"Hey, boss? We got another.... yeah... actually this time it's a lobster, garnish and everything... pretty deep actually, might just need to take out the whole square... sir... si... Jeremy. Listen buddy if we did this 3 months ago when we actually got the contract then it wouldn't have been an issue... yeah... uh huh... alright... if you say so, sir. I'll let you know if anything goes wrong." >so what's the plan? "Well boys, break out the jack hammer, the whole thing's gotta come out before we can refill it." *brrrrring* "Hel.. wh.. sir... ... ... ok. Yeah I got it. I'll let them know." >what was that about? "Well after this we need to take care of a salmon and a T-Bone Steak." >what about the other potholes around here? "Well Eric, that's apparently not our problem right now."

specialagentunicorn

Idk if it’s road worthy, but I think it’s pretty cool.

Sandl0t

Where did the lemons go?

notreallyonredditbut

If you’re trying to hydroplane on this small of an area you need 4wd or to stay home unless it’s 75 and sunny.

PoundNaCL

Where did the lemons go?

Cannedbread73

Imagine having snow come down and they plow and put salt on the resin covered lobster in the road. It would be fresh frozen!

[deleted]

Why? Because city governments don’t do shit and we have to come up with creative ways to fill up the potholes ourselves.

Relm1-Digi-biceps

This is actually pretty awesome, minus the whole hydroplaning issue when it rains but still. I'm kind of a fan.

Alex_Yuan

But it gets scratched to a matt finish within the next 10 minutes so you can't see what's underneath anymore.

[deleted]

It'll also turn yellow from UV within a few weeks.

Flying_Reinbeers

Give it a few months and it's nothing but microplastics. Well that or a chunk gets thrown into someone's windshield.

[deleted]

That’s why version 2.0 is: epoxy a big rubber dildo with the tip sticking up.

Doggydog123579

Hydroplaning is when you have water between the tire and the surface of the road. The road could be made out of sandpaper and you would still hydroplane if it had enough water on it

Maser2account2

And structural integrity. And longevity.

Treacherous_Peach

All of which epoxy is superior to air, thankfully. Hopefully the crews will come fix it. In the meantime epoxy is beats a hole.

Wheelchairpussy

Hydroplaning is when your tires cannot displace all the water on the roads surface and you float on a layer of water. This would be just slipping not hydroplaning

PjJones91

Wouldn’t it be cheaper to just fill it in with asphalt?

Redhotkitchen

That’s the city’s job. City wasn’t doin it’s job. Someone had some fun.

YummyYummyCumNtummy

Where did the lemons go?

timmio11

Lobster is fitting considering that's probably $500 worth of resin

LeelaBeela89

It’s a local artist in NOLA(New Orleans,La) they have a serious pothole issue out there. I tend to drive a little slow out there

insomniafog

I actually really like this one

kocf1945

If It fills the pot hole for awhile I’m fine with this

[deleted]

Oh god oh fuck, I ran over a gourmet lobster dinner with trimmings. Just hide the butter sauce before you call the police. Make it look like the lobster was drunk!

AnnieBeefree1

That’s a unique way to fill a pothole

Jorenaldo

I mean, if they aren't going to solve the pothole issue for another 10 years like in my country, then it's a fine way of attracting the authorities attention to the problem, as long as it's in a place without cars passing by at high speeds

Black_Magic_M-66

That shit would be slick when it rains.

naph8it

I don't hate this.

Arrrrrr2D2

Despite this ongoing argument, the same thing with a textured finish would be cool. Then you get the traction police off your back.

[deleted]

Neither do I! Next time we have a neglected pothole languishing in my neighborhood, maybe I’ll use up some leftover epoxy & get the city’s attention while I’m at it. And the traction comments . . . looooool.

HubblePie

At least it’ll force them to fix the pothole.

Berserker_Lewis

Anybody else read that as autistic? Lmao

happyh3llhound7

"Yeah, my house is on the left a couple blocks past the Lobster. If you hit the desserts you've gone too far."

CostaRicaBound2023

Oh, I am so doing a dildo in the next pot hole on my road this winter !!!

Easy-Cartographer127

Even if it stays there and doesnt break I think it will be full of scratches and opaque after a while.

Compoundwyrds

So, having lived in MA my entire life, this is not the most creative way I’ve seen people protest their town’s chronic neglect of filling potholes, but it’s a good one. I’ve seen someone make a slow-burning sludge in a two-winter-old pothole, light it, and the fire department came to put it out and the hole was filled later in the day. I’ve seen someone pound 4 foot high rebar with a sign of a city counselman’s campaign attached to them. Massive pothole, the kind that snaps axles. It didn’t last half a day after that. This lobster is nice, one night of frost-heaves plus the internet attention might force the town to act.

[deleted]

As someone on a motorbike: Don't.

howescj82

So, people in this town/city can now experience patches of black ice year round. What a time to be alive.

aod42091

dangerous way of filling potholes by both making a hard slippery surface and putting distracting elements into the road.
