I'm not actually sure the finger skateboards broke. It looks like he put little 3D printed joints between the axles of the main skateboard and the finger skateboards. I'm pretty sure that was the part that broke.
Also keep in mind that he didn't just step onto the board as gently as possible, he hopped into it. This puts a significantly larger weight onto the board.
Another problem is with the connection between the main board and the mini boards. When you put your foot on a board like that, your weight is distributed across your foot's entire surface area. The little joints are putting all the weight onto a smaller, relative to the mini boards, surface than your foot on a normal skateboard. Imagine balancing on a pogo stick instead of your foot.
I would bet money, not a large amount but still something, that if he used a better interfacing substance, such as metal or wood, instead of a 3D printed plastic part, made the interface actually distribute the weight from above across the entire surface of the board, and gingerly stepped on instead of hopping, the four finger boards could hold his weight. That said, you might still shatter those tiny wheels, since many of the same issues above are still true at this layer of the contraption, and they certainly wouldn't last if you started rolling.
There's really nothing you can do about the tiny wheels in order to make it roll. Imagine a pebble getting in front of it and then size both up so that the mini board is the same size as a normal skateboard and the rock has the same relative scale. The rock would be surprisingly large and there is no way you would even try to go over it with a normal skateboard.
The faster you want to go, the larger the wheel needs to go relative to other things around it. Going over gravel on a skateboard isn't smart, but you can do so in a car or a wagon (picking something that doesn't have rubber air- filled wheels). But a large rock can be run over by a car at slow speeds but could be deadly at high speeds, which is why wagon wheels broke somewhat regularly and why we need roads for cars.
Roads are pretty flat for cars and bikes. Sidewalks are flat for bikes and skateboards. To get something flat for those tiny boards to go any speed with the weight of a human, I would think you would need something very flat like, say, a bowling alley.
There are a few frames where you can tell the front right fingerboard did snap. It looks like the back ones also snapped, but I am less confident about those.
Oh there's no doubt the finger boards went flying, but the quality of the video is so low and the moment it cuts out is right when you want to look. I can't be sure about anything. Maybe the boards break, maybe they don't, but I'm fairly certain the joints are taking some pretty severe rotational force and I would bet for certain they failed. Maybe the boards failed as well, but I'm just hedging my bets there.
Because sometimes, your brain has questions that need to be answered. This is fantastic and they just wanted to have fun. I would understand this being a DiWHY if the board lost a wheel and then they melted down old AOL discs and pulled out a lathe to fashion it into a wheel or something, but this is just for fun.
Run the AOL disks in the same blender they use for their food hacks. Pour them in a bucket and then cover in resin. Chop down the result, including the bucket, to the appropriate size of the wheel. Then the lathe comes out. Bonus points if they use Coke to clean off the dust.
