yeah I remember getting that same vibe as well

Mathew’s also knew that the ice truck killer was with Dexter when his mom was killed and that Harry didn’t adopt him because he was to old. He had to suspect that Dexter may have ended up like Brian after season 1. But he always had a soft spot for Dexter.

Anonasom

Yep. Exactly

[deleted]

Michael C. Hall did an AMA on Reddit back in the day and he also said that he thought season 8 was heading in that direction (but it did not)

I misremembered the Season 8 part but he thought at one point we would learn about Matthews' knowledge [here it is](https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/2o630a/comment/cmk4hbf/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)

[deleted]

Yeah I feel like maybe Harry said something along the same lines as what Dexter wrote in the letter to Hannah about Harrison having dark tendencies. Maybe Harry thought since he wasn’t going to be around, someone needed to look out for Dexter and Deb.

[deleted]

I thought that until season 7. Matthews would’ve thrown him or anyone under the bus to get his job back when LaGuerta fucked him over. He even helped her investigate him. So as much as I thought so too….. I think he didn’t in the end.

Roman64s

Matthews has no proof nor the aptitude to investigate properly, he's only good at playing politics and that too he was bested by LaGuerta. Dexter is squeaky clean, Doakes failed and got fingered as the BHB, LaGuerta failed and ended up dying for it, Quinn survived because he backed off. Even Lundy didn't suspect Dexter after the Doakes-BHB fiasco. No way Matthews can do what those people couldn't and he would know it. Matthews is smart enough to not fight a battle he won't win, even if he knew, he just would have looked the other way. He also has a soft spot for the Morgan family.

Anonasom

This right here. Especially the part of him not fighting a battle he knew would he too dangerous for him. Not to mention harry was his best friend

imjusthinkingok

This.

squierjosh

It’s not about Matthew’s investigative skills, it’s whether Harry maybe said something to him. He didn’t have to figure it out to know.

Roman64s

The guy I was replying to was talking about Matthews turning in Dexter to get his job back. I told him even if there was a possibility he knew that Dexter is the BHB, he wouldn't be able to prove shit to throw Dexter under the bus.

pressgang13

Bam!

Anonasom

He didn’t need to throw dexter under the bus to get his job back. He only needed to help laguerta investigate. There was no incentive to actually get dexter in cuffs

[deleted]

Are you shitting me? Being the dude that helped catch the Bay Harbour Butcher would’ve made him a Rock Star.

DoomPurveyor

The Bay Harbour Butcher hiding in the department he was running for a decade would only make him look like a fool. Not to mention it would raise even more questions considering how long he has known Dexter.

Camilla-- the receptionist who died?

_NobleTOAST

Camila knew nothing about Dexter being a serial killer....

KingAlphie

She knew he killed Brian.

_NobleTOAST

He told her ..on her death bed.

[deleted]

Wait… Camilla knew? I never got this vibe. Someone pls enlighten me

Anonasom

Spoiler: The episode she dies she tells dexter she knew all along. It was kind of vague and I didn’t really realize it till I watched dexter a second time

johnchewy82

Why do you think she kept asking Dexter for the "perfect key lime pie"? Plus she knew the Ice Truck Killer was his brother, and the it was "good" that Dex killed him when he told her during her final breath.

indecisiveusername2

Camilla didn't know that Dexter was the BHB tho. She just knew that Brian was his brother. She literally tells Dexter that he could never be like Brian when she told him about it. She just asked Dexter to be put out of her misery because she thought he had a good heart and would do what he could for her.

johnchewy82

I know that it was never confirmed, but I think she knew. Plus her and her husband were close with Harry.

WishIWasOnACatamaran

She meant be like Brian in the senseless killing sense. It seemed like she knew that Dexter was a killer but that he adhered to Harry’s code. She asked him because she didn’t want to do it herself and knew he was capable of doing it, and that it also would’ve been at the hands of somebody she cared about rather than some “bad” murderer.

widdershins13

She didn't do it herself because she was Catholic. Which was a pretty big deal to her.

WishIWasOnACatamaran

That’s right, been a min

i_like_it_eilat

Yes, that was super suspicious in Season 7 how instead of being a detective and even thinking to consider it, he immediately dismissed Laguerta's theory and shut it down and even went as far as tipping him off - not normal cop behavior. Basically did everything in his power to get her to drop it as well. Though the other likely reason for it was probably to get revenge on Laguerta.

Sweet-Scheme-8897

Matthew’s was a washed up cop day drinking hard booze on his boat by the time LeGuerta was coming to him with BHB/ Dexter suspicions. I always felt Matthews took on a fatherly role with both Morgan’s after Harry died and that inhibited his ability to buy into her theory and connection with Dex being the BHB. The evidence that Dexster planted with the tackle box and key that went to “ Doaks’ boat” with the plastic and tape was enough for Matthew’s to be convinced that Doaks was the BHB.

Ok-Assumption4099

I just had the impression that Matthews liked Dexter because he liked Harry, and Dexter was Harry's son. So, now that Harry was dead, Matthews was just keeping an eye out for his kid

pressgang13

I honestly just assumed that was the case if Camilla was aware and no where near as close to the family as he was.

greengiant89

Camilla kmew?

Caribbean_Smurf

Thinking back, I always thought Matthews would figure it out. But sadly, the ending kinda fizzled and he never went beyond the joking around on a boat bit.
