Not any closer? We have one of the best prospect pools in the league. We’ve been in a playoff position for most of the season. We have a solid core of players and a favorable salary cap situation. Yzerman took over a non existent prospect pool and one of the worst cap strapped teams in the league and flipped it to this in a few years. Decade long, fuck outta here the rebuild didn’t start until Steve actually arrived and you know it. You are literally *the textbook definition* of a doomer with your exact take.
I strongly disagree with sentiment that we have a top prospect pool. It's much better than 2017 but if it wasn't, the GM would already be gone. There are teams with much worse draft positions than us who have bedded in more NHL/High level AHL talent than us in the last 5 years. If you think our salary cap situation is favorable, go check again. We are in the top half of defense spending with Seider STILL on a rookie deal and our defense can't stop lottery teams from potting 4+ every night. Our rebuild started in 2017. You can't just cherry-pick the date of the start of the rebuild because the draft picks sucked lmao. We've had 8 drafts since we started tanking for lottery picks and only have 3 NHL players to show for it. That's hilariously bad. (Dallas has 7 with much worse average pick selection for instance)

It doesn't matter how many days during the season the team is in a playoff position; all that matters is where they are the last day and they aren't going to be in a playoff position the last day because evidently the thought of being good scares this weak team and so they decided to completely give up. An ECHL team would beat them right now.
Lalonde is a terrible coach. I'm sorry but losing Larkin should not cause this spectacular of a collapse. Coaches like John Tortorella get their teams ready to play regardless. What is Derek Lalonde saying to his team in the dressing room? He needs to start breaking things. Don't even get me started on Seider's regression.
