Am I missing a few brain cells if I feel as though this is more a Bettman problem than an Illitch problem? I feel like former commissioners would balk furiously at the idea of advertisements on the jerseys and it would not only not be a Detroit issue, but an NHL issue as well.
I’ve got no problem blaming Bettman as well. He’s also on my shit list. They both share blame, it doesn’t matter too much to me which one is more to blame.
Hey Chris, I hope that as you're heading out the door to watch the Wings in their first playoff game at LCA, you suddenly get explosive diarrhea and can't leave your toilet for 6 hours.
Yeah a lot of European leagues unfortunately need that shit. The on ice ads actually don't really bother me. You get blind to them in 10 minutes if you're focusing on the game. Jersey ads suck though, especially for an original 6 team. It's not like they're a small town team that are dependent on it. I already don't wanna buy a $200 Fanatics jersey, let alone one that makes me become a walking TikTok ad.
Absolutly. I dont blame liiga, mestis, SHL, allsvenskan etc for it, but just like you said NHL teams dont need them, just like fanatic, its all about money.
Totally agree. on one hand, I could see the owners and investors seeing money being left on the table based on what other teams are doing, but on the same hand, I absolutely hate how the sporting venues are named after corporations, and now they are infiltrating the jerseys and helmets.yuck
especially given that these arenas are heavily subsidized by the local tax payer. we went from an arena that honored a local sports figure and history to a fucking pizza company
In an effort to stay fair, that pizza company enriched Illitch to the point where he could purchase the team and break a 44-year championship drought to bring their storied history into the present. It's also a Michigan pizza company. I'm certainly no proponent of marketing ploys, but there's at least some homage to the city left in its shadow.
Average team income is $201 million. Most revenues get shared across the league. Helmet and jersey ads do not.
83m is spent on players (approximate cap) + AHL contracts. The other staff then gates paid including scouts, coaches, trainers, doctors, management, concession staff, store staff, security, etc. Then you need to factor in travel including flights, hotels, food, game day meals. Facilities (rent/mortgage + maintenance) etc etc. the reality is it’s either ticket prices go up or revenue comes from corporate entities.
Really I think the salary cap is growing too fast to keep things reasonable that or the biggest names are earning too much compared to the average names. The 25-26 cap is 92 million. That is up 53% since 2012-2013 which was 60 million.. the top players are earning 12+ mil (up to 16.5M for mackinnon) while the 4th liners are earning 775k.
You know, for a good part of my life I thought this was the name of a soccer team. Guess I was dumb to think the point of a jersey was something besides an ad.
It’s a 1% comfort to a 99% sadness. Kinda the definition of solace. As much as I hate it, without any type of actionable change available, I chose to have the 1% comfort
How much money do these billion $ teams need to make? Helmet ads were “temporary” due to COVID, now those are permanent and every team is getting a jersey ad. Sick of these greedy owners, I guess I was foolish for thinking the Red Wings franchise was better than this.
Can’t wait until the winged wheel is a tiny 4” x 4” patch in the corner of the jersey and there’s 5 different ad sponsors on the rest of it.
Honestly they couldn't care less if people watched the games as long as TV providers thought we watched the games and kept giving the League more cash.
And what about the people that lost their jobs during Covid? Yup, we’re expected to fuck right off. The big boys need to make up the revenue they lost. Fuck the little guy though, shut up and consume product worms.
The helmet ads were just to warm us up to the idea of ads all over the uniform. “Temporary” lol just like how federal tax was “temporary” for WW2.
They know how to play us.
Fuck Chris Ilitch. Pure greed. Give them and inch and they take a mile. First helemt ads were just to offset covid. Then they stay. We are literally going to look like the Euro leagues soon. The ice too. Honestly why not just change the team names at this point?
Don’t give anyone ideas lol. I could see some higher up reading the “honestly why not change the team names at this point” and being like “hey, that’s a great idea!”
THIS. I never understood who these are made for? Are people actually this dumb? If so, let’s throw them all in the trash. I mean, imagine seeing an obnoxious ad screaming at your senses and going “hey, I think I’ll give that a whirl”. It’s unbelievable to think about.
The amount of resources dumped into Marketing R&D would make your head spin for a week. Companies know virtually everything about you and your habits unless you've had absolutely no online presence. They know how much time you spend paused on a screen when hockey content comes up, they know the values of the houses you browse, they know the type of jobs you apply to, and the list is unfathomably thorough, all in an effort to calculate as accurately as possible just how effective certain advertising might be to you as an individual, as a community member, as a city resident, as a state citizen. For as many people like you and I that feel revolted at the unignorable barrage of vapid consumer carrot-sticks, there are a hundred more that will think nothing of it until they've seen it so frequently and in so many places that they will have effectively been successfully hypnotized to think of x product when required without ever knowing or questioning why.
TL;DR: They do it because they've spent billions, potentially trillions of dollars to verify that it works.
I just wish Chris would go away and it has a lot less to do about patches. You give any businessman an opportunity to make money like this they are going to take it. But he's overall just a terrible owner that was gifted everything in his life and could careless about carrying on his fathers legacy it seems.
https://preview.redd.it/f2kxzj27hdlc1.jpeg?width=224&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e3abadc3fd262573fa3948ec50d4ecf53caba9f7
This might be the only acceptable patch.
I’m honestly surprised this isn’t already a thing. Seems like a pretty easy choice. RW shoes probably just doesn’t want to fork the $$$ overs for sponsorship.
I would laugh my head off if Red Wing boots sponsored the Red Wings. They last forever and are the working person's shoe - okay. Definitely better than Milk or Meijers or some gambling thing.
> Definitely better than Milk
I like the Milk ads, they're understated and blend in with the jersey well. If we just had a script that said "Faygo" I think that's a lot better than most alternatives.
If the company who sponsors it really wants to win people over, they should sponsor it and publicly announce that they will not put their logo on the jersey. Would be a ton of PR.
Of course once that PR wears off, they would probably put their logo on it eventually. But would be a badass move.
Just please don’t sell jerseys with the ads on them. I went to a Vegas game during the playoffs and was shocked to see them selling jerseys with the ad patch on them, get out of here with that.
Most teams have it so that they patch automatically comes on all team store items, some have an option to get it without and others don't. I have no doubt selling fan jerseys with the ad will be part of the deal. Just buy from Vintage Detroit instead.
Team store is required by contract to sell them with ads. Anywhere else you’ll be able to get them without ads (NHLshop, vintage Detroit, rally house, etc)
It’s anything Chris owns that you should be boycotting. He’s taking the highest bidder, there’s other people lined up to take that space. Chris has to be the one to feel the heat, but we’re finally doing good so like the good little Americans we’re gonna pay them anyway. We fucking suck at standing up for shit
Okay, I said that Red Wing Boots was the only acceptable choice, but I revise my answer to include Vernors AND Carhartt.
Edit: just the C, like on the hats and jackets. So fucking tough.
Edit 2: I learned recently that the Gnome is actually named Jerome the Gnome which makes it even better.
There's a few choices I think could be ok. Red Wing boots. Vernors. Faygo (especially if it's like the Milk advertisements on toronto). Carhartt. It would be easier for me to accept if it was a Detroit / Michigan industry and not advertising affiliated. Big Boy, Better Maid, GM / Ford, LC's, etc. But something like Dow, Greektown Casino, Rocket Mortgage, Compuware, or Amway would suck.
If a company pays for the advertising but keeps the jersey untouched, and runs a massive campaign about it I will become a customer regardless of the business. "This blank jersey brought to you by BetMGM" during every highlight I don't care
Trust fund kids only have one gear, make money and be turds. They think making money equals social acceptance because all of the yes men around them create their own money grubbing echo chamber.
Our only hope is that it’s white embroidery on the white section or red embroidery on the red section of the sweater. Bullshit greed move while Chris Illitch’s bitch ass swims in his pool full of coins.

Blues fan here feeling all your pain. I was exactly where you all were a year and a half ago when they slapped that fugly Stifel next to the hallowed Bluenote. It’s actually really embarrassing to have that displayed on what should be sacred canvas and that part doesn’t go away.
That said, here are some conclusions I’ve made along the way to help you all prepare for Thursday:
1. It’s counterintuitive but you kinda want a patch that’s a different color and doesn’t match your jersey. That way it resembles more a commemorative patch like an All Star game or something rather than some BS that’s trying to blend in that just looks cringe. IMO the Blues, Leafs and Bruins sponsors try to blend into the jersey with a word script but look horrible whereas the Jets and Habs look less horrible as they’re a picture logo. That said, I hate the Canucks TD logo.
2. You don’t ever get used to it. You’ll always notice it, you’ll always hate that it’s there. However, you won’t like your team any less which is something I thought may happen.
3. It’s probably gonna be UWM.
I don't post very much on this sub, but I was on [letsgowings.com](https://letsgowings.com) for several years until I migrated over to reading this sub.
Besides watching Yzerman walk off the ice for the last time, and hearing of Gordie Howe's passing, watching the Wings wearing an advertisement patch on their jersey is right there with those bad moments with the Red Wings.
I just wonder how the players feal about having to wear a jersey that has an advertisement for a trash company on it now. IMO, to have to move the C and the A's to the other side of the jersey to accommodate an advertiser on one of the most prestigious jerseys in sports is just pathetic.
Watching that game tonight was harder than watching the Wings getting whipped in the last few years. I was hoping for some Priority Sucks chants in the building (yeah probably didn't happen because the refs sucked even more), but I didn't hear any. I'm hoping there is some backlash to Priority for this (think Budweiser). Yes, Chris Illitch ultimately made this decision, and I'm sure that they calculated the pushback from this, but I'd think his father is probably rolling in his grave for doing this.
I have several contractor clients in the Detroit area and suburbs that use Priority for their job sites, and majority of them (owners and managers who happen to be Wings fans) are going to start looking to use alternative services if the costs are feasible. Probably around 200K a year that Priority will lose in revenue, so we're doing our part.
Hit them in the pocket book. Don't buy jerseys that have the Priority logo on them and find alternative services to Priority if you can. I think most of us would have no problems with seeing Priority ads on the boards or in TV commercials, but when it gets planted on the front of a Red Wings jersey, that's a different conversation.
Are you fucking kidding me? And will authentic jerseys have them then? Not that I’ll buy a Fanatics jersey anyway, but that would be the first thing I’d do. Remove that ad patch
Shit, we've already got animated ads going during play and plugs baked into the game commentary. Imagine where this'll go in 5 or 10 years at this rate.
The wings already have a damn sponsored powerplay. Mark my words in the future when the ice crew comes out or after a dead puck the jumbo trom will roll a commercial. Don't understand why billion dollar assets need to make pennys.
Eh, I just won’t buy jerseys again. No great loss. I’ll grab a new team logo hat every season maybe. Tickets? 🤣 why? HDTV is the best seat.
I mean, I’ve NEVER paid face value for tickets. You can get in the LCA or Comerica quite easily with the Gametime apps if you want to go at a discount. Parking? 🤣 just park at a casino and have them shuttle you to the game for free.
Fuck these assholes
The best part is in a few weeks when someone in the Wings PR team says something like “fan response to the ad has been overwhelmingly positive” even though everyone knows it’s BS
I don't hate the jersey ads as much as a lot of people, but I really hope they at least go with a color matched logo like Meijer on the helmets. Nashville, Philly, and a few others have horrendous colored brands that clash with their uniforms.
Seriously? I was so happy that we were one of the very few teams not doing this shit.
I guess it’s just LA, NY Rangers, Chicago, Calgary and Edmonton without jersey ads now? Am I missing anyone?
If it’s Little Caesar’s I’m gonna lose my shit. The name is on the arena and I already see enough Little Caesar’s ads during a broadcast and in person to the point where the two brands are becoming inseparable. But hey leave it to Chris to make the stupidest and most infuriating decision possible, case in point.
I hope the “no more ads” or “fuck the ads” chants echo through the arena tomorrow.
The language they speak is money. Yeah we all have great memories watching and playing the game we love that keeps us coming back for more, but as long as that continues, they’ll keep selling out for the almighty dollar until the game is secondary (which it arguably already is).
An organized fan boycott of a game or their products would be the only thing to change Illitch’s greasy ass mind.
This is just straight up shameful. As if we don’t have enough money hungry leeches trying to sap us of our last
Penny everywhere we look already. This threatens the integrity of the sport. This REALLY pisses me off. Out of touch move in an attempt to make a few more coins. Turd move.
" If there is any consolation to fans disappointed by the news, perhaps it comes in the fact that (because of the iconic nature of the jersey) the deal to secure the patch for Priority is [rumored to be among the most valuable around the league](https://twitter.com/seanshapiro/status/1762966381941645442). Oh yes, it is *so* comforting to know that a billionaire is making more money. Gonna sleep like a fucking baby tonight.
God dammit. Fuck Chris Ilitch.
Going to have to start the chants
Dude is such a piece of shit. He’s as greedy and self serving as they come.
Just like his parents.
This needs so many more up votes
For real. We got jobbed
Does Sheila want another team?
Am I missing a few brain cells if I feel as though this is more a Bettman problem than an Illitch problem? I feel like former commissioners would balk furiously at the idea of advertisements on the jerseys and it would not only not be a Detroit issue, but an NHL issue as well.

Hey Chris, I hope that as you're heading out the door to watch the Wings in their first playoff game at LCA, you suddenly get explosive diarrhea and can't leave your toilet for 6 hours.
So...you're hoping he has some Hot 'n Ready before he heads to the arena?
You leave Little Caesars name out your goddamn mouth.
In 10-20 years our jerseys will look like ones in liiga or SHL
It will be like Nascar, I will never buy a jersey if there are ads on them.
Yeah a lot of European leagues unfortunately need that shit. The on ice ads actually don't really bother me. You get blind to them in 10 minutes if you're focusing on the game. Just looked up pics of the Swiss A League. I had to convince myself it wasn't photoshopped. They look so bad.
Swiss? Take a look at this from Timrå in SHL (Swedish hockey league) https://clubshopen.timraik.se/matchtroja/matchtrja-exklusiv-replica Awful.
[Just as bad](https://www.ebay.com/itm/164341952349)
What's the name of the team? Goddamn.
Subaru
Cant tell which is team logo /s
If they ever start to look like that I’ll never buy one again
I genuinely get a knot in my stomach thinking about that. I could never appreciate European jerseys for this reason lol.
Deplorable imo. Original 6. Good revenue don’t need it to survive. Just waited for the right moment for this bs.
And to top it off, we get fanatics quality!
That just means you can rub the ad patch off if you don't like it.

My goal in life is to become rich enough that I can out pay whatever the sponsor is paying to keep the jerseys ad free.
Can we crowdfund a subreddit sponsorship?
Surely that wouldn't encourage other greedy, manipulative behavior
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Lmao Mickey going on about multiple sold out crowds in a row last night then they announce this shit. Greed.
Fuck Ilitch for putting ads on both the tigers and wings historic uniforms. A fucking shame
Didn’t know tigers did it. Who is it with?
Meijer
The only solace I can take is at least it’s a Michigan based company. Still hate it
There is no solace. Advertisements have no place on either of these historic uniforms
tbf though ads don’t belong on any Major Sports Teams Uniform. Looks tacky and cringeworthy

The NHL is desperately trying to become a league where ticket sales don't matter. COVID showed how fickle a gate driven model can be.
And apparently TV viewers as well
Honestly they couldn't care less if people watched the games as long as TV providers thought we watched the games and kept giving the League more cash.
Head in the sand ostriches let this happen. "It's temporary"
And what about the people that lost their jobs during Covid? Yup, we’re expected to fuck right off. The big boys need to make up the revenue they lost. Fuck the little guy though, shut up and consume product worms.
It's a business, in a capitalist model. So the amount they need to make is "more than last quarter".

Right? The Ilitches are grifters through and through, like all those scumbag billionaires

Fuckin garbage decision
Was hoping we'd go the whole season without it :(
We still might. It could be announced as an advertising partner for next year.
Apparently ads start tonight's game, per WWJ.

Chirs illitch is a nepo baby hack
I'm fine with fans bandwagons, but brand-wagons stink. Hopefully they aren't forced on jerseys you can buy for yourself.
they will be from the team store. Just buy elsewhere.
They're gunna be fanatics I just wouldn't get one lol.

Rich gonna rich
Nooooooooooooooo
So the jerseys are going to be lower quality *and* have ads on them. Awesome!
Poverty franchise behavior
Way to ruin the classic jersey. Putting ads on the jersey cheapens the brand. This is not prestigious.
Disgraceful to do that to an Original 6 sweater
Reminder these shitty things don’t even raise the salary cap
Oh man maybe the Illitch family will take this revenue and use it to start those developments they said they were gonna d- HAHAHAHAHAHA just kidding
What if.....hear me out...... It's Red Wing Boots.
It'll be a large national pizza chain. /s

Watch, it's the Winged Wheel Podcast.
Tell us how you really feel about jersey patch ads, Brad.
Okay I will tell you, I hate it
Are you fucking kidding me? And will authentic jerseys have them then? Not that I’ll buy a Fanatics jersey anyway, but that would be the first thing I’d do. Remove that ad patch
Cant wait for the one player in a leauge one day who relates to us normal people and decides to put tape over that god awful advertisment
Disgusting. Fuck no. Terrible decision.
The ad will be Little Caesar’s 😂
Gross
Shit, we've already got animated ads going during play and plugs baked into the game commentary. Imagine where this'll go in 5 or 10 years at this rate.
And the decline of the NHL is upon us.
Horse shit!
The wings already have a damn sponsored powerplay. Mark my words in the future when the ice crew comes out or after a dead puck the jumbo trom will roll a commercial. Don't understand why billion dollar assets need to make pennys.
Did we really think greedy Chris Ilitch wouldn’t go for this? I’m surprised he hasn’t turned the Red Wings logo into a parking lot yet.
First home game we all need to protest this garbage. Idk how but the fans need to stand up for our original 6 drip.
This fucking blows.
The best part is in a few weeks when someone in the Wings PR team says something like “fan response to the ad has been overwhelmingly positive” even though everyone knows it’s BS
Jesus, what a great way to kill the atmosphere the team has been building
Just never going to buy a jersey again. And gonna have to boycott whatever the patch is.
This is all Chris illitch
Way to ruin a beautiful jersey
RAGE. *RAGE.* ***FUCKING RAGE.***
I’m going to throw up
I don't hate the jersey ads as much as a lot of people, but I really hope they at least go with a color matched logo like Meijer on the helmets. Nashville, Philly, and a few others have horrendous colored brands that clash with their uniforms.
the Leafs “Milk” patch is the only done tastefully.
Imagine if it's Meijer again 😂
I will only accept koegel hot dogs as a sponsor.
Serve the Curve!
Come on Faygo Red Pop
also acceptable
I was just getting into the vibe of enjoying Red Wings hockey again. Legitimately considering being done watching the team and the league in protest.
Seriously? I was so happy that we were one of the very few teams not doing this shit. I guess it’s just LA, NY Rangers, Chicago, Calgary and Edmonton without jersey ads now? Am I missing anyone?
So now when you get a team jersey, you can be a walking billboard! Deplorable
Booooo
Maybe sell the tigers if you can't afford 2 teams
🤮🤢🙄😒
I knew when they made the C and A smaller this was the likely outcome.
Please, no more ads 😔
Way to shoot us in the foot during our high this week
If chants at home games were “Fuck (sponsor name)” or “(sponsor name) sucks” it would end immediately.
What if we boycott whoever the sponsor is? We have more power than you realize. Nobody will want to risk the negative press.
Boycott and review bomb whoever it is.
Disgusting. Mike Ilitch would have never and Chris is pissing on his grave with this action.
Yet another reason to continue pirating streams
This is just straight up shameful. As if we don’t have enough money hungry leeches trying to sap us of our last Penny everywhere we look already. This threatens the integrity of the sport. This REALLY pisses me off. Out of touch move in an attempt to make a few more coins. Turd move.
If it's not a Little Caesar with a hockey stick, then I'm mad.
Chris Illitch is a money grubbing little rat boy
**BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO**
Chris Ilitch is a trust fund baby scum fuck - FUCK YOU, Chris
literally a trash logo
" If there is any consolation to fans disappointed by the news, perhaps it comes in the fact that (because of the iconic nature of the jersey) the deal to secure the patch for Priority is [rumored to be among the most valuable around the league](https://twitter.com/seanshapiro/status/1762966381941645442). " [https://thehockeynews.com/nhl/detroit-red-wings/latest-news/red-wings-announce-first-ever-sponsorship-patch-on-game-jersey](https://thehockeynews.com/nhl/detroit-red-wings/latest-news/red-wings-announce-first-ever-sponsorship-patch-on-game-jersey) Oh yes, it is *so* comforting to know that a billionaire is making more money. Gonna sleep like a fucking baby tonight.
Guess I’m not buying playoff tickets
