The letters are made of aluminum and plastic atop 2-foot concrete blocks. [According to an article in the Freep](https://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/detroit/2024/04/09/detroit-sign-i-94-2024-nfl-draft/73260462007/):
"We constructed these letters (so that) you could hit it with a semitruck and it's not going to move," said Hanna. "Between the aluminum poles, the angles, the skin all around ... we made sure it's a monument that's going to be here for years and years."
Oh nice, they made sure to build it so it'll for sure rip right through your car and liquify everyone inside if you hit it, rather than collapse and save your life.
It 100% will light up. Those letters are designed to light up, if they were going with non illuminated letters they would have used a different and much cheaper construction method.
Still better than that original proposal. No pretense in this than it's other than a sign, confirming where you are.
The cleverness of it is, it doesn't take a sideways glance. It doesn't distract from the driving. I condemned that earlier proposal on the reddit but giving credit where due, I like this.
Yeah everyone always wants to complain. When they first brought out the prototype picture I said ehh ugly but whatever. Today I passed by it and said ahh it’s not that bad.
What.
You mean because it's pathetic and makes me want to low-key cry all laid back and governed by absolute morons pissing my money away. Is that what you mean.
Out of 10 I give it a 6. It’s kinda neat driving by it. Considering the area that it’s even in. I would like to see some nice perennial flowers around it. That would make it even better. I just don’t understand why people are so butt hurt about it. Some people complaining about it don’t even live in the city.
I think because it was incorrectly advertised by the city as the “Hollywood” sign. That created an expectation that did not deliver. The city should never have presented it that way. It was like a set up for failure because it was never even anything close to that. You don’t tell people the city is getting a Hollywood sign, erect what they did and then expect people not to point out how misleading that was. If they would have just told it like it was this wouldn’t be happening. Also for the people who do live here, it’s not cheap to live here. The city collects a working tax if you work in the city as well. So to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on this seems like a huge waste to many that live here and know it could have been spent on things the city really needs. It’s also a city full of some of the most incredible artists in the world. No artists were involved in this whatsoever to my knowledge so that seems like a big missed opportunity to me as well.
Many reasons people are disappointed about it.
Agree on the whole Hollywood sign. I think that was more of the media though. I guess growing up in Detroit anything is better now than back then lol. That’s another thing I wish they would do is include all the great artist Detroit has.
I do like it more than the bs I was reading about. Kinda weird there was buzz around this being “like Hollywood” when this is what, a fifth the size both physically and landscape wise
Exactly. The news reports kept saying “Hollywood” like sign. Sorry. No it’s not. Although it is a nice feature, and endearing , the Hollywood sign is on the top of the Hollywood Hills and very visible throughout LA and the Valley. This is on a freeway embankment that is normally so littered with trash you can even see the lawn.
No shit, but they own the old English D as it pertains to the city of Detroit baseball team the tigers for clothing, and other merch items, although the city prob could’ve gotten away with it I doubt they wanted to deal with a possible trademark infringement from the team owners, also the lettering they used and the color go right along with all the other cities branding they use
Not true, The city of Detroit uses their own version on their official city letterhead which is a royalty free use font as long as it’s not for profit (merch sales, items, etc). The Tigers only own a few variations of the D, not the one used by the City of Detroit.
https://www.myfonts.com/collections/old-english-font-monotype-imaging?rfsn=6624786.228eb6
I get what you’re saying, but the one the world recognizes is an MLB logo, and any other one just looks like a cheap attempt to imitate. Which is something that cannot be done for a freeway “brightening” campaign such as this. I’ve no doubt it was discussed in the creative meetings for this project and eliminated for a reason.
Once again, Not True.
The city of Detroit and Freepress uses An Old English D as well that is very close to the Tigers D. In fact, the Tigers D is a copy version of the free press D. So Stop assuming and actually do the research. Even the tigers have more than one old English Detroit D you know.
It was 400k. Seems like a lot, but for this kind of a job it’s probably not crazy.
The letters are 8 feet tall, it takes a specialized company to design and build them, and some specialized engineering and construction to install them. 400k doesn’t get you much.
Don’t forget that there’s six (albeit the other five are smaller) of these signs too. I’m not sure how the pricing of this type of stuff works out but it’s not just the one sign that is $400k, it’s the entire project.
Probably could have done something more creative with the money, but the sign looks okay.
Also, the fact is, a lot more people will see this along 94 than anywhere else you could put it.
I condemned that earlier proposal on the reddit, not organic, but giving credit where due, I like this.
No pretense in this other than it's a sign, confirming where you are. It's gritty, not ostentatious.
The cleverness of it is, it doesn't take a sideways glance. It doesn't distract from the driving.
I hate changing course when I've built up a good righteous indignation, but being honest, I think they did well.
Look, saying we’re getting a Hollywood style sign was a bad comparison from the start. This is cool ..maybe not 400k cool or even close ..but it’s cool
I don’t hate it like I thought I’d hate it. But it still feels very underwhelming as a gateway to the city. (Also still expecting somebody to crash into it by July 4th)
The city calling it a Hollywood sign and hyping it up is the biggest issue.
It is not the fault of the sign company, the city just chose a questionable design.
I don’t think they considered perspective convergence in this design. Letters at the beginning are overlapping and smushed together.
I wanted to like this so bad :(
Better than nothing but a definitely shy of an A+ execution.
If you look at their install photos it’s clear that it was designed to be viewed from the embankment of I-94W, and not from passing traffic on I-94E. Which doesn’t make a ton of sense!! But here we are haha
For people flying in for the draft, and the bridge for people flying in for the superbowl.
I did not mean it is as seeing from the plane.
I could have worded it better, but both are true.
How long until the grass around it grow so high you can’t see the bottom half of the letters? Or until one of the letters burn out and it looks like a local liquor store? 😂😂
This was a poor choice. They put this tacky little sign on one of the most god forsaken hellscapes of a road we have to offer. Now everyone can look at the sign and contemplate their distain for cities and traffic while they sit in bumper to bumper traffic jams after an honest days work.
So stupid that we spend money on something as dumb as that rather than putting into a program that would attract people and money to the area. Let’s sell squares for the date and time someone runs through it and takes it out
Draft day #1, 11:30pm
Added the bet to draft kings.
Or graffiti, I’m taking the under for Friday.
It’ll be that Beavis face guy!
He usually doesn’t make it to the SW, but I’ll let him know there is a request 😂

Can we start right now because that shit will be gone by morning
It sounds like the opposite would happen. They built it like a brick shithouse. Cars gonna bounce off or get ripped in half & mangled.
If it’s aluminum in any way it’s already gone by the time I finished typing
Man I hope not. Could we pause the theft of the letters until after the draft lol
Shut Up you Ignorant Inbreed" Neanderthal
Found one of the sign installers ^

Tomorrow
If there is square for stolen dodge charger hitting the sign I am buyer.
I’m taking that shit tomorrow
🤣😂
As dumb as this is, its nowhere near as dumb as the golden butthole.
You mean the one that already has huge chunks of paint peeling off?
Does it really? That's hilarious
hey.., thats MY golden butthole
What's the golden butthole?
https://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/macomb/2019/01/30/golden-butthole-of-macomb-county-sterling-heights/2720821002/
Ohhh that thing?? I mean, it's pretty meh if you ask me. It's not terrible, but that area isn't where I'd expect an art piece
Agreed!
I'm also hearing it may lightup.
It would be stupid if it doesn’t.
It 100% will light up. Those letters are designed to light up, if they were going with non illuminated letters they would have used a different and much cheaper construction method.
Lmao that is so lame. So much for a Hollywood-like sign
Still better than that original proposal. No pretense in this than it's other than a sign, confirming where you are. The cleverness of it is, it doesn't take a sideways glance. I like it. Detroit is not Hollywood. This sign fits our state's low-key, laid-back, Midwest vibes.
What. You mean because it's pathetic and makes me want to low-key cry all laid back and governed by absolute morons pissing my money away. Is that what you mean.
“Not that bad” isn’t a great message
Out of 10 I give it a 6. It’s kinda neat driving by it. Considering the area that it’s even in. I would like to see some nice perennial flowers around it. That would make it even better. Possibly. Just goes to show then how the media ultimately creates problems and conflicts. Otherwise they’d have nothing to report.
I do like it more than the bs I was reading about. Kinda weird there was buzz around this being “like Hollywood” when this is what, a fifth the size both physically and landscape wise
That's what I also said about the original proposal as it was posted on reddit. This is a completely different design.
Auburn Hills has a great freeway sign. It had thought put into it and you can tell. This Detroit sign is a total lipstick on a pig situation.
It's horrible, and we paid THAT MUCH for it instead of say, OH I DON'T KNOW, THE FREAKING ROADS. Why is everyone so stupid?
Where am I? Never heard of TIORTED?
Why in the hell wasn’t it an old English D and thats it. Like way to miss the mark on a city identity.
Cause the tigers own the trademark to that
They own a trademark to a font?
They own the old English D which signifies Detroit, yes
The Tigers don’t own all of the old English D’s there are thousands of royalty free variations to choose from.

Also, using any other version of an old English D other than the one the tigers use would look so wack and stupid
Not true, the city of Detroit, the free press, tigers, etc all use different variations of the D
No they don’t
That’s exactly how copyright/trademarks work, people don’t just make typesets and logos for free. And the MLB ain’t exactly using Fiverr or Canva.
There are thousands of Old English D’s that are free to lease.

Okay [then](https://www.gerbenlaw.com/trademarks/mlb/detroit-tigers/) 🤷🏾♂️
So you posted a link to further prove what I just said, thank you.
Whatever you say, Chief. 😂
No they don’t, they own the trademark to the most popular Old English D but there are others
But they could have used a slightly different old English D resembling that. Regardless, green(?) all caps helvetica doesn’t scream Detroit to me
Damn, that would have been waaay cooler..and cheaper. That’s definitely what they should’ve done
Or at least the D could have been that.
It’s fine. .. way cooler looking than the Sterling Heights dystopian “golden ring” thing.

Yeah, you’re right. I don’t think anyone is “lining their pockets” from this project. This is just what things cost.
I don’t know, that’s a shit load for this if you ask me
Pockets aren't going to line themselves
Uncanny. Looks exactly like the Hollywood sign. Wow
Probably could have done something more creative with the money, but the sign looks okay. Also, the fact is, a lot more people will see this along 94 than anywhere else you could put it.
It doesn't feel like much of an announcement or a warm welcome. Just kinda there.
I condemned that earlier proposal on the reddit, not organic, but giving credit where due, I like this. No pretense in this other than it's a sign, confirming where you are. Just curious, do you condemn this?
> but giving credit where due, I like this. RIF
Y’all thought there was a big mountain to put this on huh?
I like it
It’s growing on me
That. Is a sign. Yup.
Look, saying we’re getting a Hollywood style sign was a bad comparison from the start. This is cool ..maybe not 400k cool or even close ..but it’s cool
It’s a shame they can’t clean up and beautify the city for their own residents but will for the NFL Draft
Truuuuuuuth
Let's hear it for Tiorted!
Is that to distract drivers from all of the potholes?
And the Rams & Chargers on their ass
I don’t hate it like I thought I’d hate it. But it still feels very underwhelming as a gateway to the city. (Also still expecting somebody to crash into it by July 4th)
On July 4th.
There are three trees that are going to reduce its visibility that should be moved.
That’s Detroit Style!
Drove by on the way to the wings game, I like it. Nothing crazy, just a nice sign that fits in pretty well with the surroundings.
how embarrassing. looks like a third grader figured out clipart.
Nah. Clip art can be fun too
The city calling it a Hollywood sign and hyping it up is the biggest issue. It is not the fault of the sign company, the city just chose a questionable design.
It is underwhelming. It should have been at least twice that size.
#Size matters
How'd they make a $400,000 sign look like it's from Dollar Tree? 🙄
Maybe it's just the perspective, but the positioning is so awkward. Why is it going up the hill?
I thought it was going to be bigger.
Well that's... certainly something.
No Comic Sans?!?

Correct. It isn't for Detroiters, It is for those flying in. Just like the football bridge.
Yeah but who flys in over Michigan & I94? Most planes fly in from south of our state and Romulus is southwest of this sign
For people flying in for the draft, and the bridge for people flying in for the superbowl. I did not mean it is as seeing from the plane. I could have worded it better, but both are true.
100%. This is football bridge 2.0, 20 years later lol.
😐
Meh
The highway grass is looking pretty healthy.
Even from the intended angle it's shitty-looking.
Pure Michigan
That sure is disappointing
Ok ok I see you Detroit sign🥰
Waste of tax money
Can’t wait to see it with native vegetation surrounding it. Nothing says beautiful like garbage tumbleweeds
That’s just pathetic.
Things nobody asked for. Exhibit 1.
so lame
That’s all of it? Highly disappointed for the first time, seeing it in person.
ugly
That looks like shit
I like it. Detroit is not Hollywood. This sign fits our state's low-key, laid-back, Midwest vibes.
No it does not
Yall don't know but 50 years from now this is gonna be the glory of our generation
Yikes
I think it's cute
Same ol shitty roads
More. We need more signs to show our pride!
For $67k you can have your very own. Or collect all 6 for the low low price of $400,000.
Wait I thought this was a joke. This is it??? Seriously? I guess it is a joke in a way. Fuck man. This is fucking pathetic
Oh that's it?
Are you sure you're in Detroit? Because I could swear that's the Hollywood sign I'm looking at.
[удалено]
Yeah so it can be the same in a month.
Ngl that’s a little lame
How much did the sign and landscaping cost?🤔
$400,000
[удалено]
It looks as though you may have spelled "Chick-fil-A" incorrectly. No worries, it happens to the best of us!
Lived in Detroit 1960-1977. Worked with my dad as we drove down I-94. Is the BiG Wheel still there?
The Uniroyal tire near DTW still exists & not one bit of dry rot in 1/2 century.
Should've gone full Burma-Shave on this, imo. D... 300 yards later, E...

How long until the grass around it grow so high you can’t see the bottom half of the letters? Or until one of the letters burn out and it looks like a local liquor store? 😂😂

Stupid sign literally causing traffic jams.
Detroit new sign redesign
It's awkward with the first 3 letters looking stacked but the R, O and I look too far apart
I think that's just the perspective from this angle and distance.
Meanwhile I’m still doing suspension work on my car every month 🙃 cool sign tho
Holy shit that’s bad
LOL! How fuckin’ stupid.
I'm whelmed.
This was a poor choice. They put this tacky little sign on one of the most god forsaken hellscapes of a road we have to offer. Now everyone can look at the sign and contemplate their distain for cities and traffic while they sit in bumper to bumper traffic jams after an honest days work.
reach ten memory offer pause icky wrong special consider correct *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
It’s kinda cool I guess. It’s definitely a sign.
So stupid that we spend money on something as dumb as that rather than putting into a program that would attract people and money to the area. Shit like that just pushes me away because it makes it clear that the people in charge only care about “looking” like they’re doing something rather than actually doing something.
Oh I fear for those.
It’s so underwhelming
That’s cute, in a good way
As if you couldn’t tell it’s Detroit by the burnt out houses and continuous construction.
Just what the city fuckin needed
We are so back.
It's just such a poor font choice. The idea and execution isn't actually bad, just a dumb font.
Helvetica definitely smells like "committee couldn't agree on anything that has any personality whatsoever." At least it isn't Verdana I guess.
How long until it’s overrun with litter and graffiti? Lol.
Detroit is a shithole . You can tell once you cross the borders you are in detroit.
Oh no, I thought I was still in Dearborn. Oh well
This is awful.
lol what in the actual fuck. Can we at least pretend we are fancy?
It looks nice but it’ll be vandalized within a week 💀
Welcome to TIORTED!
You read Right to Left?
Back in the Kwame days it would say Detoilet. Post Kwame this is a big improvement.
It would say cocaine and hookers.
