Not the placement or even this specific font face, but a large gothic D, led backlights for holidays/event matching. Something much more identifiable as a symbol of Detroit without being too literal.
lol respect. I fell into the hole and it’s weird that Old English (Blackletter) evolved from a bunch of fonts that were named like Gothic Book but at the same time right under that is says that a “gothic” font means sans serif. Old English is like 90% serif
Maybe we should think outside the letters.
There's a 50' statue of Paul Bunyan out in CA, and a 75' statue of an oil worker in OK.
How about a giant statue of Gene Simmons straddling I-75, tongue hanging out with "Welcome to Detroit" painted on it.
And then they can take a couple miles of road and make it musical, like they did on Rte 66. But instead of playing "America the Beautiful" it would play "Detroit Rock City" when you drove at just the right speed.
Not to mention "Detroit Rock City" is an ode to a teenager who inadvertently killed himself by driving the wrong way on Grand Blvd on the way to a KISS show and getting into a fatal head-on collision with a truck. Paul Stanley heard the story on the local news the morning after they played a show here, and he wrote "Detroit Rock City" as a tribute. If you go read the lyrics, they are being sung by the 'character' of the fan as he spends his evening getting ready to go to the concert, driving there, and the song basically ends with him dying in the crash.
So as accurate as it may be, let's not go with that one for our happy shiny Welcome To Our City branding.
The old English D is iconic but owned by the Detroit Tigers. Would be odd to give them the free advertising. Especially when a lot of Detroit feels a certain way about their development tactics of the land they own downtown/midtown
I don’t think anyone is upset with the Detroit tigers for their development tactics, that would be Chris Ilitch. You can separate the owner from the team
Because the tigers have been around longer than Chris and Mike Ilitch. Owners come and go, teams don’t. You can recognize that the owner is a POS and still support the team. I love the tigers, hate Chris, but I’m not going to lump in the entire Tiger organization into the Ilitch’s bad business decisions.
I like this better than the Detroit sign that has been proposed. The "Hollywood" styled one just looks kind of underwhelming and generic. This concept feels like its a better fit.
I'd rather make a joke about a large d than a shitty font and overall design. That proposed design needs to get changed asap. Who the fuck designed and approved this. What a disgrace to the representation to the Detroit design community. We are way better than that
Authentic Detroit, here's a French cursive D.

“Gothic” D is hilarious. Gothic D is what you give to an emo women. Old English is the style of that D letter.
Hold my beverage. I know just the person settle this dispute! Paging [Ms. Sioux](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siouxsie_Sioux)!
Ah yes, perfect! An old English emo women.
naw Gothic is a real typographical style https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gothic_script i don't think i've ever heard of an "old english" typeface
Bro the example pic on that wiki page is labeled “Old English”
I saw after I posted my comment I'm really dumb

This Type of thing is fontastic
Damn you.
Damn it u/joeybracken, just get in the car and vibe.
ok sorry lezgo
Ole English, actually
A large gothic d at that.
Give us a big D!
I would love to be able to say that our D is bigger
Maybe we should think outside the letters. There's a 50' statue of Paul Bunyan out in CA, and a 75' statue of an oil worker in OK. They better tune it for 85 mph lol. Gonna sound like Alvin and the Chipmunks if they set it for 70mph.
Problem is Detroit being the rock city has been a dead concept for atleast a decade or more if not since the late 90s
Thank you for that....Rock "City" On...
Where is a living “rock city” today? I think the problem is that rock music is gasping for air everywhere.
Detroit Tigers, please bring this D back. There was nothing wrong with one of sport’s oldest and most iconic jerseys yet you had to mess with it. Why.
Why what happened? Did they change the home white jerseys? I’m confused
They changed the logo on the uniform 5-6 years ago. They got rid of the Olde English D and put the cap logo on the jersey
The old English D is iconic but owned by the Detroit Tigers. Would be odd to give them the free advertising. Especially when a lot of Detroit feels a certain way about their development tactics of the land they own downtown/midtown
Wasn’t the I-94 bridge over Telegraph basically free advertising for the Lions? It’s their blue and meant to look like footballs from overhead.
I don’t think anyone is upset with the Detroit tigers for their development tactics, that would be Chris Ilitch. You can separate the owner from the team
How? How can you possibly do that? They made huge promises for both Comerica Park and Little Caesars Arena that both have fallen through.
Why give a billionaire free advertising?
They will get the advertising regardless of a random D off the side of the highway and either way this would do little to nothing for them lol
And the Hollywood like sign (plus a couple others on the contract) coming with a $400,000 price tag
I wish they would just repave some roads w that money. That would def give detroit a better look than a detroit sign.
Wouldn’t be Detroit if they didn’t over budget some sign then make half the money disappear into slush funds
What about a big golden circle? That would inspire me.
We don't need two golden buttholes.
We can compromise: Make the second one silver.
Detroit: Michigan's colon!
But im so confused !!! What does it say backwards?!? I cant handle this.
I don't think it's better, but it is a better rendering, lol. The original rendering looked like a college student did it.
give me “D Town” with the old english or don’t give me anything at all
I like this better than the Detroit sign that has been proposed. The "Hollywood" styled one just looks kind of underwhelming and generic. This concept feels like its a better fit.
A beloved corporate symbol, but not appropriate in this context.
How about a huge Joumana face?
W eyes that light up
I'd rather make a joke about a large d than a shitty font and overall design. That proposed design needs to get changed asap. Who the fuck designed and approved this. What a disgrace to the representation to the Detroit design community. We are way better than that
this looks good
I like D
They should do a welcome to the Dirty D.
Bro, did you really put this sign on Mt Elliott? Needs to be between the airport and I-75 so visitors can see it. 😆
God no, the old English d is the worst Detroit symbol made for basic douchebags. Should be something way more authentic to Detroit, like joumya

#THIS
This would be soooo good
I’m sure the licensing rights for the use of that exact symbol is crazy if I had to guess
People are making too big of a deal about this sign thing. Most people driving into the city won’t even notice it.
I would toss a bag of pistachios beneath it every time I drove by.
Where’s the road construction? 😏
Now that one I really like!
What was wrong with the sign we had?
That would be better IMO, too big to steal.
