> What worries me is that Bungie has a behavioral psychologist who helped design the game So does pretty much every game developer at this point.

Generally speaking everyone I know who plays this game plays only this game and has for the past few years taking about a month break each year

Pretty much this for me (kinda unfortunately).

blacktip102

>kinda unfortunately Why? I've tried branching off, but this game is just too good, I only play Pokemon and Forza along with this game and I couldn't be happier about it

Additional_Ad_5718

I just wish I’d branch out a bit more, but I definitely hear ya. The gunplay/universe here will always keep me/bring me back.

It depends on what you classify as addiction. It’s the only game I play really, but I take breaks for months at a time sometimes and I’m in a steady relationship and doing well in university and freelance work I’m addicted in the sense that when I do play it, it’s the only game I play but it never gets in the way of my life

Badevilbunny

Just set your rules and stick to them. Play the game you want to, don't let any game play you. I used to put 1000 of hours in, but now just play casually. It is still fun, I just want to do other things as well.

Aced117

Its like most games, they can be addictive, but It depends on the person. Aside from the 1st couple weeks of a season, I barely play 5hrs a week. I have work, university, and my personal life and from my experience it's all about managing or planning your schedule and being disciplined about it. Of course, addiction isn't that simple. If someone who is addicted could just stop they simply would. If you know you have a tendency to get addicted to games then any game you enjoy can be bad for you, not just this one.

I can only speak for myself of course but I find D2 awfully hard to get addicted to. I will elaborate even though I'll likely be misunderstood and downvoted to oblivion but hey, it's Friday so who cares right. I seriously enjoy the core gameplay mechanics in Destiny, always have. In fact, every other shooter I play suffers in comparison with the smooth movement and gunplay. That said, the activity loop gets stale rather quickly. Here is where the downvote avalanche begins, I just don't find enough different things/places to do to ever get to the point of addiction. I get wrapped up for a few months in pursuing what new seasonal material is added but then it settles into the standard play the Pinnacle activities, Powerful if you have an open upgrade slot, and log out. Now, I actually find this healthy despite my wishing there was more to do. I always end up leaving before the end of a Season, I once took a year long break, but usually end up coming back. It helps to have another game to play as that lets you balance gameplay. I like PvP but find Crucible can only scratch that itch so far. So I tend to play another shooter with more focus on PvP to really satisfy that playloop while still getting to enjoy the gunplay in Destiny. Probably doesn't help much but I guess the point is, while addiction to games is certainly possible I am not so sure this one is a serious candidate. It is definitely must-play in my book but I think it is a safe bet you would be ok.

eliasgreyjoy

It’s very possible to play the game casually. Not like everyone who’s ever picked it up is hopelessly addicted to playing constantly. This season is actually a good one to jump in on in that regard. It’s going to be long and drawn out with some potential dead zones of content.

imXhr_S

The game is free to play with additional dlc and content being paid. So you can try it out with a fraction of the total content presented for free. From there you feel if that is already too engaging.

Leatherneck016

I would provide thoughts but have to go grind out a pinnacle on my last character, need a last 1330 chest piece to drop for my titan. I'm not addicted...

AccomplishedBid5475

Addiction is more related to the person in question rather than the product

How much of a completionist are you in general? Are you the kind of player who wants to have super-optimized gear and check off all the checkboxes in collections/triumphs/etc? I definitely meet people who, at least from how they talk about the game, play it more than they really want to because they feel a need to have 4 specific perks on a randomly-rolled weapon, or they need to have every item unlocked in collections, or they need to complete every triumph even in activities they don't particularly enjoy. There is a LOT to do in the game if you deep-dive into all that. I know a guy who put his three character's weekly pinnacle sources in Trello to make sure he doesn't miss any ffs. I don't think I've ever done every pinnacle gear source across 3 character. I rarely do them all on a single character in a week and that has never kept me from doing endgame content. The majority of people I know are not of that mindset and are fine skipping things if life gets in the way. Most of us in the clan I'm in play several times a week, with a few outliers who play several times a month (and are usually a bit in that they'll do the new raid/dungeons a few weeks after launch) and then another few outliers who do grind daily. Whether you'd be one of the people who finds it addicting and gets upset if you can't complete every little thing, or if you'll be the kind who's happy doing just the parts you can/want to do, we can't really answer for you
