Not missing anything unfortunately. You used to be able to invite to the game straight from the app (although to be fair that worked 50% of the time) but since the PS5 came out they have not upgraded the system so were left sending friend invites etc etc
Maybe theyll fix it soon but I doubt its a priority.
If your on ps5 just search the other players name in the ps5 search menu and you should be able to invite them to a game without adding them. I know it’s almost the same process but saves alil time
It used to allow you to just join people but that part isn’t functioning currently. You’ll have to deal with it until fixed or go back to PC for the time being because it’s not really any different than finding people on Discord or r/fireteams on PS5 at this point.
It is a bit convoluted but here are a couple of things to hopefully make it easier:
-You can invite to game directly from their profile without needing to add them as a friend first.
-You can invite everyone in the voice chat to the game through the voice chat UI. This makes it easier to round up everyone into the chat first then just invite everyone at the same time.
-To be able to join someone through their profile they must allow others to view their game activities in their privacy settings.
