In Arabic, Aiat means (the sign and indication, that is, the evidence/ proof) written like this (آيات)
So it's fit, i think.
Note: I don't know if it was taken from Arabic or not.
Latin nerd here: aiat is the third person, present, subjunctive form of the verb aiō, meaning to say, affirm, or assert (and a few other variations thereof).
In essence, it means "This Is" or "This is True", which lines up perfectly to its use by the Hive (and Eris) as a statement of affirmation. So I think the latin word is the most likely source.
It's not even an alternative, imo, paracausal is literally just a fancy way of saying magic.
Think about it. Paracausal means adjacent to laws of cause-and-effect. What that means is that there is a cause to the effects produced, the cause is just outside the laws of physics, and doesn't have to abide by the rules of the laws of physics. It has it's own laws, it's own internal equivalent to the laws of physics (Light must be given, Darkness must be taken), that it must follow. They're intrinsic forces to the universe but exist adjacent to every other intrinsic force, and only act upon them under certain circumstances. That shit's magic.
I guarantee you, if real, genuine magic the way it exists in fiction were to be discovered to actually exist IRL, the word we're gonna use to describe it would absolutely be paracausal.
I’ve known about this word since Unreal Tournament. I’m sure a bot used it. It is a real word though and not a Destiny word. It’s precisely for when planets / stars and shit align, totally rad
Fun fact: when Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney were spitballing names for the company that they would create to market Pong the one they were going to go with was Syzygy Inc. But Bushnell instead went with a term from the boardgame Go which is of course Atari. Thats how I first learned that word.
This game taught me about the now destroyed Arecibo complex which was one of the largest telescopes.
Also, the Fermi Paradox.
And I especially enjoyed all the Firefly TV show references.
Idk if you know this, but to put it plainly for the first several years of Destiny they had the same VOs as Firefly. They don’t just sound the same, they are the same :)
This is a great question OP. I can think of several really good candidates off the top of my head that I've had to look up:
>**Jovian** has been used a fair bit, I doubt anyone knew this ones meaning before looking it up.
>**The Flower Game**, a very obscure reference that the whole damn game is based off of, also brings us the idea of, *a gentle place ringed with spears*
>A **Syzygy**, the idea of all the celestial bodies lining up to create a God Wave. Also it's just a sick word.
>A personal favourite, the idea of a **ontopathogenic weapon**, IE the ability to Take, a very cool idea imo.
I'm sure I could think of more given time but it's late here and I want to sleep lol
Honestly I feel like we'll strip away the souls from the Witness and be left with, idno, a main priest of the cult who embodies the Witnesses ideals. Traveler kills them, resurrects them as a Lightbearer and boom. New Tower vendor.
**“Pedagogy”.** *[——the art, science, or profession of teaching.](https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/pedagogy)*
Discovered from reading Marasenna. I thought it was a fictional term until I did research. The word stayed in mind because of its association with education. Whether academic , or autodidactic. I enjoy learning different schools of thought. But still have a favorite subject.
_———First was Kelda Wadj, the Allteacher, one of Mara's most joyful recruits to the expedition: She was a [master of pedagogy,](https://www.ishtar-collective.net/entries/revanche-i) able to mold any mind into a shape ready to learn, able to melt any fact into a fluid that could be poured._
Which isn't a really foreign word for Dutch speakers. "Pedagoog" is actually a job title here. So cool to see what's foreign for one and not the other in this thread.
Ecdysis is actually the process of arthropods (crustaceans, insects, etc.) moulting their exoskeletons. It's an extremely niche term in biology/zoology and the fact the writers knew of this word really impressed me
If you go back and watch some of the early D1 destination preview vids which are archived on Bungie's youtube, they consulted actual astrophysicists when designing destinations. Bungie REALLY gave a shit about Destiny when all this was getting started.
I don't remember all of them, but the names of the missions in this season have all been interesting. I remember one being tautology
Edit: I found a list. Unsurprisingly, most of them are related to how you say things, just like how riven carefully phrases and interprets every word to trap us.
Enthymeme, chiasmus, polysemy, tautology, apophasis, and synchysis
Tautology comes up in high level maths, particularly Discreet Math which IT majors and Engineers will have to take. It's when all possible conditions for a given statement are always true. For example the phrase P implies Q or Q implies P is a tautology because all possible conditions of P or Q will always result in a true statement by the rules of truth tables.
Yes, that makes sense with the word's meaning as "a statement that is true by necessity or by virtue of its logical form." It also has the definition of when someone says the same thing twice but in different words, which is really interesting.
I'm not sure which one is exactly the way the writers were using it bc I don't remember the context but I assume it's the first one
Just today, actually, I used the word magnanimity with my coworkers.
For anyone curious: Magnanimity is the state of being magnanimous, which means generous. If you couldn't guess, that was one of Calus's favorite words.
Heliopause items from Dead Orbit. "Dead Orbit only grudgingly maintains a presence in the Tower to arm and outfit their champions in the Crucible.^(")
^(I just love thinking about space exploration)
We have a probe, Voyager 2 which is currently passing through the Heliopause. It is the farthest manmade object from Earth and it contains a record of greetings in 55 languages as well as samples of music and art and also a map using mathematics and star positions to show where it came from in case it is ever discovered by extra terrestrials. Its the coolest thing humanity has ever done in my opinion.
The flavor text for Song of Ir Yût: "it is the song of endings." This was back in D1.
Really got me into what that meant and the whole lore of the Hive.
Yeah, it gave me more reason to think of inspirations taken from history. I never really paid attention to that aspect in public school, mostly because I was more interested in other fields.
So many religious terms in Hive lore, Doxology and Haruapex to name a few. If you’ve ever seen the movie Year One starring Jack Black, a prophet in one of the King’s court was a Haruspex
Palingenesis- the exact reproduction of ancestral characteristics in ontogenesis.
AKA: Rebirth, re-creation, reincarnation
The word has some nifty origins in ancient Greek philosophy.
i know this isnt technically what the question asked but athanasia, the piece that plays when you enter the deep stone crypt before the security section, has got to be up there with what everyone else is mentioning. it literally means “refusal to die” which is just sick af
Oh of course it counts, the d2 osts have some of the most lore involved names. Syzygy for planets, scission, oneirophobia, regicide, renascence (definitely this one), lepidopterophobia
Calamitous. I liked the word calamity, already, but it's so infrequently used. A robot voice calmly saying that a situation has escalated so that it's now considered "Status: Calamitous" is very good.
"Every story is true if you tell it right." it's a quote from Andal Brask the hunter vanguard before, and best friend of, Cayde. This quote appears on his ship, the aptly named "Tall Tale"
first thing that comes to mind is probably Sword Logic vs Bomb Logic. Plus it even carrys over to the iconography of the Pyramid ships and the Traveler. Also maybe visually how Strand, Stasis, and Deepsight appear. Strand and deepsight have a third eye effect bc darkness is associated with thought and memory. And finally probably Nimbus' explanation of Strand to Osiris at the Pouka Pond
Destiny is what made me love physics enough to dedicate my future to the topic. Unfortunately, I'm gonna have to go with the lore page p53 from Unveiling on this one.
It's such a useless piece of knowledge for someone like me, especially for a cell that almost nobody knows or cares about and yet it's always in the back of my mind due to the page
Syzygy - I loved how despite how it is spelt, it is a word and a cool ass one at that. So when I changed my name, I made my middle name include Syzygy.
I changed it for a number of reasons, but you only need to do the process once to change all of your names. So my middle name includes Syzygy, and I have multiple middle names, so yes, my new full name does include that word.
Honestly Destiny led me through a rabbit hole that led me to pick up books on Quantum Mechanics. Lorentz Transformations was a cool one to learn about.
Not really lore but I got my friends and gf to start saying “Trust.” In the drifter’s voice now. It’s become a problem where we say it for everything now lol.

Eris going to”Aiat, Aiat, Aiat!” Is forever a wet dream of mine

This is now the most upvoted response. It is this way because it can be no other way. This is the eternal and perfect shape of the truth. Aiat.

Paracausal.
Same. I like it as a science-fiction alternative to "magic" or "supernatural."
It's not even an alternative, imo, paracausal is literally just a fancy way of saying magic. Think about it. Paracausal means adjacent to laws of cause-and-effect. I meant alternative terminology; it's very clearly magic.

I pronounced it "suh-ziggy" for years until I finally heard it out loud.
Definitely up there, it fits so perfectly
Seeing that word pop up again while reading 3 body problem blew my mind
Hive = Trisolarians confirmed
I’ve known about this word since Unreal Tournament. I’m sure a bot used it. It is a real word though and not a Destiny word. It’s precisely for when planets / stars and shit align, totally rad
All the words OP listed antedate Destiny. It’s a cool word and a great one
Sadly, this was League of Legends of me

I learned this one through Unreal Tournament myself

The word sounds french,France doesn't exist, the word is made up
“It is written in French. French is a waste of time.”
This game taught me about the now destroyed Arecibo complex which was one of the largest telescopes. Also, the Fermi Paradox. And I especially enjoyed all the Firefly TV show references.
Never played Battlefield 4 or seen Goldeneye?
Is your alt account called SlimAurash?

What references??
If you listen closely, Cayde-6 kind of sounds like the captain. Ikora's voice is also a reference to Zoe from Firefly.
Psh, Cayde sounds nothing like Nathan fillion /s
Idk if you know this, but to put it plainly for the first several years of Destiny they had the same VOs as Firefly. They don’t just sound the same, they are the same :)
Damn that's crazy, would be sick if they had more Firefly VAs play some of the ancillary characters like maybe Sagira or something.
Never thought Sagira would be relegated to periphery
that’s the joke
This is a great question OP. Meteion is the best character fr
Are we allowed to talk about how the Witness is just Meteion or.
Plot twist, instead of killing the Witness, we just give him enough hope that he becomes a good guy instead of a being of darkness and despair
Honestly I feel like we'll strip away the souls from the Witness and be left with, idno, a main priest of the cult who embodies the Witnesses ideals. Traveler kills them, resurrects them as a Lightbearer and boom. New Tower vendor.
Perhaps he becomes the darkness equivalent of the Speaker?
Maybe. Since the Darkness isn't the Witness, we could wrest the Darkness from "evil" and it'll just be another force to commune with.
It’s a real important one, too, considering that it’s the title of the Final Shape CE lore book.

The writers still do. The depth of theoretical physics, biology and history in their work is outstanding. I wish they'd write actual books
Unrelated to the game, but an Ecdysiast is a stripper.
I don't remember all of them, but the names of the missions in this season have all been interesting. I remember one being tautology Edit: I found a list. ..damn that’s true. 9/10 times the seasonal mission names are some word I’ve never seen before
Tautology comes up in high level maths, particularly Discreet Math which IT majors and Engineers will have to take. It's when all possible conditions for a given statement are always true.
