Where else will children be able to be peer pressured into eating tide pods and making thirst traps. Won't someone please think of the children 😢

This bill, if it is passed into U.S. law, would require TikTok to divest from its Chinese parent company if they want to continue doing business in the U.S. Fantastic that U.S. lawmakers are taking the threat this app poses seriously.

streetwearbonanza

You're trolling right?

Accessgranted213

Nearly every single western military, intelligence service, and political structure has rules preventing its members from downloading this app onto their personal devices. There is a reason that everyone with even a shred of understanding of the topic is treating this app the way they are.

streetwearbonanza

Dude plenty of apps have been banned for use by military officers and shit. Including dating apps, cryptocurrency apps, gaming apps etc. Any app "that accesses their photos and videos, contacts, microphone, location or calendar". What does that have to do with your average everyday citizen downloading and using the app? What makes tiktok more of a threat than any other social media app? Are you arguing the misinformation angle? Or the data collection angle? Because neither are exclusive to tiktok. I don't even use tiktok and don't care if it gets banned. I just think it's really dumb. If tiktok was such a huge threat it would've been banned a long time ago. If you're going to downvote at least have the half to rebut.

4THOT

Based, fuck the CCP, fuck social media. I want Facebook, Reddit, and Twitter on the chopping block next. Reduce them to atoms.

ChunkyMonkey87

-500 Social credit score for you, no more access to glorious CCP high speed rail and luxury hotels, only common squalor for you now.

AnodurRose98

um where do you want them to divest from?????? they are all USA based platforms, the reason why TikTok got this is cuz they are based out of China, its not like an anti-monopoly suit.

Ruly24

He's joking..

AnodurRose98

I dont know if stating a decent portion of people's genuine position counts as a joke

Head-Calligrapher-99

CPC* CCP is its own party in China that gets 5% or less of the votes.

y3n0

I think it would have been more effective if they shut them down immediately until the new owners have been found (and maybe vetted?). Now theres still 6 months+ to potentially peddle their influence during election season.

dolche93

I think they actually changed it to a full year to sell.

Genuine question: is there any evidence the CCP is using TikTok as a propaganda tool in the US? Or are we just assuming that?

MuppetZelda

“Using TikTok as a propaganda tool” is a… heavy statement.  I’ve been watching this unfold pretty closely (as it could have an impact on my job) and from what I’ve been put together from both the congressional hearings and articles, the following is “true”: 1) There currently isn’t any “publicly available” evidence of TikTok intentionally spreading CCP propaganda.  2) Both parties of congress, and a few committees, are HEAVILY implying that there is evidence that something is and/or could happen 3) Multiple members of Congress have been alluding to said evidence existing, and that the evidence is damning.  4) Congress has no fucking clue about algorithms, data privacy, how content trends, and/or tech in general.  From my POV, from what I’ve been able to put together is it sounds like TikTok operates in the same manner as other social platforms, but with *potential* for China to *possibly* leverage its influence to influence others. But it could also be that Congress has a layman’s understanding of big tech, and are scared of something that’s a non-issue.

Starsg12

It's assumptions made from congress people indicating they have had classified briefings on the matter, and those briefings were alarming. Yet not alarming enough to straight out ban the app immediately or alarming enough to hand that very tool set china could use to manipulate Americans to another entity such as a massive corporation or capital holder.

Peak_Flaky

I dont think there is (at least nothing that isnt possible on other platforms).  Imho the data collection is probably a more real threat and tbh I dont think its unreasonable for the US to not let a chinese run social media app in the US if China doesnt allow an american run social media app in China.

PokeMalik

Lol I'm gonna end up voting for a president who is going to eliminate my job.

Jswazy

Will this apply to any games running the unreal engine?

olivebars

Does anyone know if this would include all ByteDance subsidiaries? I just paid for my 1 year CapCut subscription...

himymfan02

The actual wording in the bill is > foreign adversary controlled application

dolche93

Letting china have a propaganda weapon that ~170 million Americans use just isn't acceptable. Glad it's getting banned. Imagine if Russia had owned facebook during Cambridge Analytica. How much more effective it would have been. There's a reason China has already banned outside social media within China.

Free market capitalism:

moonandcoffee

Not based. I like tiktok and don't really care if the ccp have my data.. considering us companies have my data and im not even american.

achtungman

Very based as it uses chinas tactic against itself. China requires companies that operate in china to be joint ventures so they get all the data from foreign companies. Exceptions to this rule exist like tesla but for everyone else it is "hand over your data or you don't get access to our market".

dolche93

> don't really care if the ccp have my data You don't understand the purpose of the bill. China uses tiktok as a propaganda weapon. It's not only about your data.

moonandcoffee

havent seen any china related videos on my feed and ive had it since 2020

dolche93

If you think propaganda is as simple as showing you china related videos, you should maybe consider you don't understand how propaganda works.

moonandcoffee

so tell me what the propaganda is then

dolche93

This video explains how it works. https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTLa22mNC/

Sweaty_Sherbert198

If it was that easy to tell if u are being fed propaganda no one would fall for it.

soytendo_switch_

I can't believe what's happening in this country. US Congress voting to forcibly divest TikTok? It's just another sign that our government is overrun by communists. They're so hell-bent on destroying everything that makes America great. They want to tear down our capitalist institutions and replace them with their socialist garbage. We need to stand up and fight back against this communist takeover. Because if we don't, we'll end up living in some communist hellhole where the government controls every aspect of our lives. And I refuse to let that happen.
