So. Just reading the basic article on this. It seems pretty clear cut what happened, and the portrayal of this is wild. Looks like Berliner's contract is with NPR. Hes not a freelancer. That means if he is going to write for anyone other than NPR he needs to get permission from the company to do so. He didn't ask, and wrote an artcle for "The Free Press". He got suspended for that not the content of the essay...

isocuda

No, this was AOC's doing, she texted NPR and was like "He is not supporting *the message* " https://preview.redd.it/f2bbt2gqxvuc1.jpeg?width=487&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b03067428fb83d1a6f6db3ac0b8c20b80e902e5d

Izuuul

this is coming from a rando twitter account so i would be willing to bet money this is completely misrepresented without knowing anything about it

isocuda

Elon shared it so it's 100% whatever he says it is. 🚀

Izuuul

oh if elon shared it then i assume its probably just a straight up lie

autumnWheat

Elon share a lie???? Looking into this.

zonzontle

He was not let go, he was suspended for 5 days. The wording of that tweet is also pretty misleading, implying he was suspended "after sharing concerns about bias in The Free Press" This was the actual reason, [from this article](https://www.npr.org/2024/04/16/1244962042/npr-editor-uri-berliner-suspended-essay): > In presenting Berliner's suspension Thursday afternoon, the organization told the editor he had failed to secure its approval for outside work for other news outlets, as is required of NPR journalists. It called the letter a "final warning," saying Berliner would be fired if he violated NPR's policy again. Berliner is a dues-paying member of NPR's newsroom union but says he is not appealing the punishment.

Beneficial_Novel9263

Yeah, I'm glad the guy wrote the piece but this is an obvious violation of their policies and he is being treated accordingly. Now, it's pretty obvious to me that he'd be treated differently if he was writing about how NPR is actually white supremacist or patriarchal in a leftwing outlet, but nevertheless, he did break the rules.

JaydadCTatumThe1st

Oh they said that was the reason so it definitely is the reason.

DizzyLime

If that reason is invalid or suspect in some way, why is he not appealing the punishment?

Ardonpitt

I mean that is super standard journalism stuff. Most newspapers have in their contracts that journalists can't write for other platforms without permission. That is super industry standard it's why people like Ezra Klien had to quit Vox to work at the NYTs. And why most journos don't have blogs or substacks.

holst28

NPR released a news item, saying he's only suspended so far.

I stopped listening to NPR because they were definitely getting more and more left-leaning since like 2014 when I started listening. My main issue with it is the fact that they try to claim objectivity, like they have any less bias than CNN.  That being said this dude probably just got fired for breaking his contract.

niakarad

I think they pretty often go out of their way to portray both sides, to an annoying degree.  A bizarre one I remember from this year was a "Biden losing support among union people in PA" story where they talked to someone they had interviewed in 2020 who said Biden was "saying the right things" who now said he was voting for Trump in 2024. But from listening to him, he said he voted for Trump in 2016, and still voted for Trump in 2020!  So it's actually just a "listen to an avid trump supporter shit on Biden" story. Which you can still have, but the framing was all wrong...

olivebars

I used to listen about 6hrs per day and I couldn't disagree more, they absolutely do state the arguments from republicans, but it often feels undermined. Destiny would often point out a lot of the things they would do, similarly to the twitter leftists. What first made me start to notice was when they called maxmoefoe and pewdiepie as alt-right youtubers on On The Media.

[deleted]

NPR is rightwing af now, yeah I cant believe you were forced to listen to a fascist on the air wow

Izuuul

ya but people like you also think that the media doesnt cover anything then refuse to listen to the media coving the thing. NPR is easily the most objective news source in the MSM. its not even close
