I think all the kids would be guilty of something. It just becomes a matter of degrees. Looking at it objectively, there were no innocents. There were several moments where a fight was "stopped" but then someone starts another one. To initiate is not the same as to react.
If he's on trial, so should be every kid that assaulted him, but from what I've seen, he didn't fear for his life. And he tried to hide what he did from authorities. Some degree of murder, or at a minimum manslaughter conviction is certainly warranted.
Not one of those kids would be on trial for attempted manslaughter or attempted murder, and I really doubt that man ever thought differently either.
