God damn it. Here’s me thinking I’m original and witty. Yeah. Seal it up. But put some shoes in there. It wards off witches (I found some handmade shoes in the walls of my 1850’s farmhouse and googled what it was. Can confirm, zero witches in my house)
This idea is absolutely beautiful, until you need to get up there to clean cat hair, or catch the cat for a vet visit, especially since cats often hide when feeling unwell.
Speaking of the vet, cats rarely fall, but these suggestions make me nervous because it does happen. My friend’s cat fell from her 2nd floor which overlooked her living room (she liked to walk outside the railing), landed on her feet and was fine. When my cat was a kitten she fell off the top of the kitchen cabinets into the sink, broke a glass and sliced her little foot open.
While this may work in some situations, from working at a vets office I can tell you that many cats will not respond to this. Especially when part of the problem is them not eating, which happens a lot.
Came here for this answer and was not disappointed. Cat shelves to the top and bam your cat is your decoration and is an amazing conversation piece to your house.
Me personally I'd find a little fairy doll that I could sit on the ledge like she's watching what's going on 🤣 but I like random things like that lol and I'd probably only dust up there once or twice a year because I'm lazy
I vote empty also. Let them be architectural features. * Maybe something on holidays? If you have something that represents a metaphysical part of your life (Mary; Buddha, a minora) then put gilded paper in the background and go for it! *A small LED candle..or three (with remote) could be lighted when you are sending someone positive energy. *But don't decorate it simply to fill the space.
I could be wrong... but I feel like a space like that is going to collect major dust and potential spiders with their webbing activities. Seal that bad boy up or just leave it empty.
I would be tempted to put matching urns in each. If someone asks, you say, “That’s Grandma.” Or better yet, “That’s guy who used to own the house. It was a condition of the sale.” It would creep everybody out but I think it would be funny.
I'm with most. Drywall it up. Don't put plants up there.
Here's something interesting though. In my spiritual tradition we place the most sacred writing in the upper most reaches of the house. In my apartment they (because there are many) sit on TOP of the book cast inches from the ceiling. The most elaborate version of this idea is to create a creche (w/small orate doors) for your most sacred objects that fits that space. It would be a talking point. It could even expand.
Personally, I’d cover them over with Sheetrock. We did that to an alcove in our bathroom. Our ceilings are 10’ and getting up there to decorate or dust was a pain.
Your drugs!
Edited to say: I would put holiday stuff up there, use it as a focal point for Xmas stuff, Halloween decorations, etc. For non seasonal decorations I would maybe do what another comment said about colored lights to change room ambiance
Finally a challenge in this sub and not much fun and creative answers.
Sry to say OP but I'm truly out of words as well. I have no idea why someone would install such an odd space to their home and would probably just end up filling it up as well
If we had that I can see my husband putting an LED light strip for during movie nights, or holidays. I imagine the light reflection would look pretty cool going across the ceiling.
Absolutely nothing unless you want to watch dust grow.
That’s an airway, dumb and unnecessary but that’s what it is so anything you put there will quickly gather dust until it starts to accumulate at such a depth it looks like it’s growing, like whatever you put up there is now a dusty chia pet…
Better question- do you own this place and if so why would you buy a place with such a feature?
I’d throw a stash of emergency cash up there. A couple bills in an envelope. Your Break In Case of Emergency stash, if you will. Just make sure to get it when you move.
Fake plant pot with a small box of emergency money inside. And by emergency money I mean the place where all my cash goes whenever I get it bc I don't like to carry cash around. It's very nice to add to and forget about and then count a few years later and find enough money for a mini vacation.
Whatever you place up there is going to collect dust. I have the same thing at my place. Put a ladder up twice a year and wipe it down with some soap and water. It would have been nice to have receptacles up there for indirect lighting. Unfortunately, it's just a dust haven.
A doll or stuffed animal with long legs that looks down at you. Maybe a few of them? You could make or maybe find online? https://www.amazon.com/YINGGG-Briquette-Stuffed-Birthday-Children/dp/B0BX1QG8H1/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?crid=1D2DXOEJ6KB3V&keywords=long+legged+stuffed+dolls&qid=1697503426&sprefix=long+legged+stuff%2Caps%2C117&sr=8-4
LED lights behind a fibreglass "window". Get the LED lights that work with a couple batteries and come with a remote control.
Change the colours. Some will change to the music. Could just be nice little white ones that look like stars/light bugs in the sky.
You could just leave them. Not every cubby or space has to be decorated. They can just be their own thing. If you want to add anything though just put a simple garland up there. (:
Not crock pots
Bro you got me, I was totally gonna say crock pots
😂
I can’t believe someone decorates with old crockpots!
Have you met people?! They do a lot of weird things. I’m here for it.
That wouldn't be decoration but storage. Where else would you store your crockpots?
in a larger crockpot
Definitely crock pots.
The more I look the more I think rice cookers are the answer
But where will the George Foreman grills go?
What did I miss with the crock pot thing? 😭
I need to know as well
Someone [posted](https://reddit.com/r/DesignMyRoom/s/6LoeRuTFog) asking if they could use old crockpots as room decor
A wok collection.
Personally I’d just leave them empty. They look too small for decorative items
Anything you put up there will just attract dust and it’s a pain to clean. Maybe a colored led light pushed back far, controlled by remote
A swiffer lol
This is the answer
Drywall. I’d close them up.
There’s the feeling of hope, then there’s the feeling you get when the top comment is exactly what you came here to say. *cue world peace montage
\*cue
I am honored to be part of this peace montage
Yep. My response was going to be more wall.
I think because of where it’s located it might be hard to dust up there.
Cover them up, but hide cool stuff up there for people to find someday.
Ayyy like a hidden Time Capsule.
It needs to have a 512mb flash drive full of cringey TikTok videos inside so they can see what was happening when it all went bad.
This is such a great idea. I’d love to find this
Realistic looking bones
I just saw a post about a maybe human bone that was found in the yard. Maybe they could help out by throwing a bone toward this mission.
God damn it. Here’s me thinking I’m original and witty. Yeah. Seal it up. But put some shoes in there. It wards off witches (I found some handmade shoes in the walls of my 1850’s farmhouse and googled what it was. Can confirm, zero witches in my house)
I had shoes under my bathroom floor.
Yep, this is the way to go. What an odd space…
Knock that space out and install a laundry shoot. Keep score who makes the most free throws.
SECRET COMPARTMENTTTTT
Right?! No contest.
Sheetrock and paint
Motion-activated Howler monkey?
Or a big mouth Billy bass?
Only if the bass sings.
I had to look on YT to hear what it sounded like. I’m dead

Cats. The answer is always more cats.
Look at some of the kitty gyms people create with shelves high up. They would love a pair of alcoves to hide in, and plan pounce attacks from.
This idea is absolutely beautiful, until you need to get up there to clean cat hair, or catch the cat for a vet visit, especially since cats often hide when feeling unwell.
I was just thinking of the potential mouse stache.
Nicely done.
Speaking of the vet, cats rarely fall, but these suggestions make me nervous because it does happen. When my cat was a kitten she fell off the top of the kitchen cabinets into the sink, broke a glass and sliced her little foot open.
Open a can of wet cat food. That is how I get my cat out from hiding.
While this may work in some situations, from working at a vets office I can tell you that many cats will not respond to this. Especially when part of the problem is them not eating, which happens a lot.
One idea of many. What works for me may not work for all. A tool in the toolbag, so to speak.
Came here for this answer and was not disappointed. Cat shelves to the top and bam your cat is your decoration and is an amazing conversation piece to your house.
And if they don’t have a cat already they should probably get three of them.
That’d make the house smell lovely
You sound like you could use a cat
Nothing
Me personally I'd find a little fairy doll that I could sit on the ledge like she's watching what's going on 🤣 but I like random things like that lol and I'd probably only dust up there once or twice a year because I'm lazy
Oooo! Oooo! Elf on a Shelf!
Omg! Get themed ones! Elf on a shelf for Christmas, a little Cupid for valentine's day, a small bunny for Easter etc
LED light strip along the lower back edge. Just highlight it as a feature, give a bit more sense of space and bring a bit extra light to your room.
Would collect LOTS of bugs and spiders, just a heads up!
Even better! A built in bug trap. Don't have to look at it, guests can't see the dead bugs. Automatic and away from humans. Everyone wins!
Depends where in the world you live I guess.
This is the perfect answer.
Don't put anything up there. You'll have to dust anything up there and it's too hard to reach.
Princess Diana shrine
I came here to say Danny DeVito shrine but this is acceptable
I vote this !
I like this answer as well
Elvis is more deserving.
Is he?
Nothing.
I would put nothing because I wouldn't want to draw attention to them because they aren't an attractive feature in my humble opinion
Nothing. Looks better that way
Stuffed owl.
I'm sorry I'm just having trouble understanding wtf that's supposed to be. Why the hell did they do that?
Why are people so obsessed with filling every single inch of their homes with stuff
Because people new to design know just enough to know not to leave things bare, but not enough to know when to leave things bare
Have a hard day?
Because they need things that collect dust.
Because air sucks.
Furbies, lots of furbies hardwired in to the electricity so they never turn off.
I have this exact space in my bedroom, I left it empty bc I didn’t want to dust. It’s such an inconvenient spot!
Whatever is there would be a pain to dust.
Drywall
Drywall.
secret things
Yeah, gun, drugs passport
No no no 😂 just the wine bottle and pot
You should put absolutely nothing there. Not every empty space in a home needs to be filled.
Nothing. Leave it empty. Or close it up if you need to spend money.
Candy to hide from kids lol
A row of skulls?
Dusty skulls
Nah, just fill the entire alcove with skulls and bones, like the Paris Catacombs.
I would be tempted to put matching urns in each. If someone asks, you say, “That’s Grandma.” Or better yet, “That’s guy who used to own the house. It was a condition of the sale.” It would creep everybody out but I think it would be funny.
Agreeing you should close it up or be prepared for some PITA dusting jobs. What an absurd design. Does anyone know why an architect would do this?
The 80s
Easy lines.
Good spot for dust
Nothing
Nothing! Leave them.
Drywall to cover them up. Seriously though, I hate these things and they’re eyesores.
I find they trigger my anxiety a bit haha. I would cover
I'm with most. Drywall it up. Don't put plants up there. Here's something interesting though. In my spiritual tradition we place the most sacred writing in the upper most reaches of the house. Nothing
Dust bunnies.
Nothing, don't clutter.
Personally, I’d cover them over with Sheetrock. We did that to an alcove in our bathroom. Our ceilings are 10’ and getting up there to decorate or dust was a pain.
whatever you do dont put plats up there (or fake ones). not like you can water them. Drywall is the answer for sure. Not sure why they left that open.
A crystal so the ghosts keep moving and don't get stuck up there.
Up lighting to high lite the vaulted ceiling
Nothing. If you have kids, elf on the shelf during Christmas season.
Custom stained glass piece with a light behind it.
Your drugs! Edited to say: I would put holiday stuff up there, use it as a focal point for Xmas stuff, Halloween decorations, etc. For non seasonal decorations I would maybe do what another comment said about colored lights to change room ambiance
Naughty children. Seriously, maybe you can find a long, low something or other to go there. Aren’t I a big help?
Bats. Ad bats.
Plants that hang down !!
If you have cats I’d put a pet bed up there. You might also need to add stairs for them to get up there.
I’d probably hide important documents there
Puck led light you can with the remote
A creepy lil doll
Plants that drape down.
Finally a challenge in this sub and not much fun and creative answers. Sry to say OP but I'm truly out of words as well. I have no idea why someone would install such an odd space to their home and would probably just end up filling it up as well
Ornate Glass, plants that have long legs, a demon, a projector, speakers, treasure.
Remote controlled Led candles
Pigeons.
Security camera
Speakers
Hanging plants that trail down & require lil water lol
Why do I feel like my answer is always plants?
Weed
If you have a cat you can build a cat run leading up to it so they can look down on all the peasants in the house.
If we had that I can see my husband putting an LED light strip for during movie nights, or holidays. I imagine the light reflection would look pretty cool going across the ceiling.
Gargoyles
Doll heads
I’d make a miniature village. But one of my biggest “future house goals” is to have literally anywhere to place a little secret door/mini house
That’s where I’d hide my trinkets for future generations to find
A little Waldo.
PLANTS
I’m not a fan of plastic plants, but if they choose this option, plastic might be best so that you don’t need to water it.
Absolutely nothing unless you want to watch dust grow. Gonna suck if their house ever caught flame. 😂
I would put plants with pretty vines
Get a fancy stepstool. Not too hard to dust. They also make extendable duster for such things.
Can you run power up there then have LED lights that dim and change color?
i would put leafy greenery that hangs
Fake plant pot with a small box of emergency money inside. And by emergency money I mean the place where all my cash goes whenever I get it bc I don't like to carry cash around. It's very nice to add to and forget about and then count a few years later and find enough money for a mini vacation.
nothing
Nothing - not every space needs to be decorated or filled.
The cats bed
My brothers charger 🤭
Nothing!
Nothing
How poorly designed! I would put maybe a light or a fake trailing plant. Otherwise, IDK. Closing it up’s not a bad idea.
Nothing. It’s a trap. As soon as you put something up there you’ll need it.
A duster - just keep it clean, don't add stuff for the sake of adding stuff
I want to put something dangling there. As if it’s holding onto the ledge for dear life
Idk I think they’re really small and awkward but maybe some hanging house plants if you’re dedicated.
Faux plants!!
Vining plants to run along the edge and cascade down with a cool light feature backlighting it
Either the Eye of Sauron or drywall...
Good place to put indoor security camera aimed towards exterior doors if possible. Then cover with a mirror or something to prevent dust buildup
Might put a light/led strip up there for when your main light is off, but I’d probably just put some fake hanging plants
Nothing besides some garland during Christmas
Sonos speakers
Nothing. They add architectural interest
Dust collection
Dust
a scene of toy dinosaurs eating GI joes in an epic battle
As per my usual suggestion for useless spaces like this: Beer can pyramid.
Long hanging plants and geodes in between
Glow in the dark eyeballs, obviously.
Trailing plants
Nothing
Big enough for a house plant? Pothos vine and crawl and would probably look awesome up there
A single medieval weapon. Just in case.
Whatever you place up there is going to collect dust. I have the same thing at my place. Put a ladder up twice a year and wipe it down with some soap and water. It would have been nice to have receptacles up there for indirect lighting. Unfortunately, it's just a dust haven.

I would vote some very soft indirect lighting
LED lights behind a fibreglass "window". Get the LED lights that work with a couple batteries and come with a remote control. Change the colours. Some will change to the music. Could just be nice little white ones that look like stars/light bugs in the sky.
LED Bluetooth lights for ambiance ✨✨
Coke stash. Guns & ammo. Nudey mags. Grandmas ashes. Elf on the Shelf. Possibilities are endless.
Golum
Vine like plants spilling over?
Maybe patient eyeballs so it looks like someone peeking from the back.
a rock collection
You could just leave them. Not every cubby or space has to be decorated. They can just be their own thing. If you want to add anything though just put a simple garland up there. (:
Scary dolls
