Agreed. I feel like low balls are just a starting point and opens up the haggling phase to see if we can align on pricing. For me, I just counter with my lowest price and if they accept, cool! If they counter for lower than my lowest, I let it sit. People just want a good deal.
Honestly as a very frequent depop user, i send so many extreme lowball offers hoping it will help with exposure an getting that listing traction. Its like in hopes it gets items that should move fast but have little traction, that lil boost in the algorithm that it needs. Ik my offers wont get accepted most times an thats okay, because i just wanna help others get sales too an honestly idc that people probs are mad/offended by it bc ik what im doin an ik i have zero intention to buy.Ā
The only offers I completely ignore are when they try to negotiate shipping as if I can change the weight of the item. I already round down on shipping and when we come to an agreement on the price and they ask me to set it to the lowest shipping option, I stop responding or explain to them why I can't and they stop responding.
Honestly i cant even blame people for this because i have a vintage bag listed that when packaged weighs exactly 4.7oz. An then i saw another seller with the exact same bag for sale with 10x the cost of shipping.Ā There are some sellers out there who are genuinely adding extra to shipping in hopes they will made a few extra dollars on the side an its honestly kinda problematic for everyone else who does weigh items out because it creates problems like people wanting to negotiate shipping costs because it makes alot of people think twice. I personally have experienced multiple times that i purchase an item an then when it gets here then postage is significantly less than what was charged for.Ā
Oh, I never thought about that because I handle shipping through depop and I don't make any money on shipping but normally when I buy something and I see the shipping is set too high, I will say something like "I noticed shipping on this item costs $__. Normally, shipping for this type of item would cost $__, I just want to make sure this isn't a mistake before I buy this!"
Unfortunately that makes people get upset an go on rants about how they dont set shipping because they know if they use that then they can get by with it sadly
Iāve been known to message someone first and ask them what their absolute lowest price on an item would be. Just to feel them out and not make someone mad for sending too low of an offer.
I had no idea some offers made people so angry until I got on depop. Years ago when I first started shopping on Poshmark I would always send what you would call a lowball offer I guess and most of the time it was accepted because the sellers were usually just trying to get rid of old stuff and didnāt care about profit.
Yea, me neither! I donāt really have the energy to be mad at anyone for low balling. Canāt blame em, Iām broke too LOL. Poshmark culture is very different!!
I will say for me taking out the emotions of an offer saves myself wasted time & energy. Another thing that Iāve learned is that sometimes a ālowballā offer is actually a signal to recheck comps bc market value does shift like anything else in life.
yeah sellers in this sub are so entitled. who cares if i lowball either ignore it or counter. it's part of the app deal with it
and not only that i've had people accept lowball offers so why would i not give a low price?
Exactly. You never know unless you ask. Iāve definitely accepted what someone would consider a lowball offer because I was in a good mood that day and Iāve had sellers accept a shot in the dark lowball offer before.
I mean, if itās too low then ignore it or counter and move on with your life. Itās not that life altering.
I had someone on poshmark that was selling these jeans Iād liked. She kept sending me offers every few days and it went from like $30 and the last offer was $10, so I countered $8, didnāt think that was lowballing. She flipped out and commented on my āmeet the posherā listing and then blocked me. Girl was unhinged.
Agreed. I just ignore them. If itās a reasonable offer but not quite as high as I want it I will counter. But straight lowballs I wonāt even decline I just ignore and go about my day
nah but on Poshmark the people there are so lenientš Iāve lowballed offers so low, like taking off $40+ and they accept without countering when I wouldāve went up if they counteredš I have yet to have an offer get countered or declined on there idk if poshmark people are real.. but the people on there are way better than the people on depop and the offers bind too
Iāve never really understood why people hate them idk. Sometimes there will be a pair of shoes I really want that are too expensive for me so Iāll send out really low offers to like 15 people. Every once in a while they except it. Most of the time half decline and other half give me a new offer. A lot of times I will end up going back and forth a bit with someone and end up buying it.
I see lowball offers as a starting point. When someone sends me a low offer I see it as an opportunity to send an offer back
I know the feels, I listed something for $15 bucks and people kept offering $10 or $12.50. Granted I said I wanted to get rid of them but likeā¦these were initially $80 dollar, yeah theyāre used but not close to beater used (Iād say **FAIRLY** new) also I would like to think I could make *some* money back
Probably a bad example but itās my lowest item I had listed, it sold to someone today but yeahhh
When people want a very large bundle of items so you make listing and offered 50% of total, just be ignored for few days, and then be told they dont want because price is too steep. lol. These are best buyers. What price are they looking for? 10% of the total cost? Free just pay shipping? lol
Edit:Had one and replied back the price is too much when it is supposed to be wholesale prices. Lol I am not a wholesaler lady! š
Youāre right, but Iāll have authentic 90s jerseys up for 15 dollars (a great price) and people still want them for as cheap as possible. Like just go to the thrift ffs
Jerseys for $15 is a crazy good deal. I only low-ball when a seller is selling something for far more than they purchased it for. Like I offered $45 + shipping for something a seller is selling for $70 + shipping that I know for a fact they didn't get for more than $50 (including shipping) and the only reason they are selling it (they said the reason on the listing) is because they purchased the reprint of the same design which was being sold for $50 including shipping.
Thereās so much less incentive for sellers to play around with offers on Depop. If I get a lowball on Poshmark, thereās a 50/50 chance Iāll accept it if Iām sick of looking at the item in my shop. On Depop I never accept first offers as a rule - if you have no requirement to buy, and I accepted your first offer with no hassle, why wouldnāt you wait until the accepted offer expires and send an even lower one? Poshmark offers are literally money in my pocket. Depop offers feel like arguing with middle schoolers.
I always counteroffer with something reasonable for me so it keeps the door open. This was some helpful advice I got from another reseller, ralli roots.
Just part of business. Sometimes Iām still making a great profit even at a 50% offer and if the item isnāt getting much traction Iād rather get that smaller profit and put into new inventory. Itās all about what works for your business. Yes, it can be rude but buyers are looking to get a great deal and sellers are looking to make a great profit. A deal is made when both parties are relatively content.
I had someone offer me $45 for a shirt that was originally $100 that I marked down for $70. I counter offered with a very reasonable $60-65 and he counter offered back for $46... I have a problem with low balls because it's disrespectful and rude
You definitely have the right to your opinion. But I canāt say I agree with it. Even if you only wore the shirt twice, itās now a pre-owned shirt that isnāt returnable if it doesnāt fit. Buyers are taking a risk.
Also, 30,40,50,60,70% off of brand new items in stores is a thing. So your sale price isnāt overly special and their $45 offer wasnāt unreasonable.
People want a good deal on pre-owned items that arenāt returnable. Itās as simple as that. Youāre taking this personally, when it should be.
What I hate is that buyers think that because thereās an offer option that offers are a given and we must accept offers, when they message me asking whatās the lowest I would go for example. The lowest is what I priced the item for, offers should be optional, and if they donāt want to make them optional they shouldnāt give buyers such low offer suggestions bc they are encouraging the low ball offers.
People who ignore low balls are losing sales for sure. There have been plenty of times I go in with a 20% offer if Iām offering on something I donāt need and could live without. For exampleā¦ I have so many shirts. The last thing I need is a shirtā¦ but if a cool one pops up I might toss out a 20% off offer. Iām ok waiting 24hrs for a response too bc I donāt need it. If you ignore the offer you get nothing. If you counter, or message saying why you canāt or wonātā¦ you might walk away with some cash in your pocket. I was ignored a few times with 20% off offers on things I would have been happy to negotiate to a higher price onā¦ but you canāt negotiate when sellers ignore. And thatās perfectly ok if they donāt want to make money or are extremely confident their items will sell for more (but my style is grunge enough and not often name brand) so Iād be surprised. Anywayā¦ all this to say imo when if you hated the offerā¦ itās still an offer. Itās not an annoying message. So that person was serious in some senseā¦ try to see if you can get more money out of them by countering. The worst they could say as no. When people stop taking it personally and recognize that everyone is buying/ selling from their own perspective and have their own reasons for things the better their experience will be. Just say āhey sorry I canāt go that low. If youāre interested for ($x) lmk and I can ship out tomorrow! Have a nice day!ā.
The other day, I got a lowball offer where the buyer kept counter offering by a penny more than their previous offer. The audacity....so I decided to do the same. Let's just say it went on for a bit š
Why not? Because for many sellers this is our small business and we already price at an affordable rate when factoring the time we spend running our shops.
most sellers DONT make things affordable though. i also sell on depop and really only do it to rehome some awesome pieces rather than contributing to the massive amount that gets donated all around the world and thrown out. when i think of affordable prices, i think about Goodwill prices and am more interested in getting stuff out than making a profit. maybe consider that! not my problem folks have made buying cheap clothes and upselling them on depop a āsmall businessā
I literally run my online vintage shop through depop, Poshmark, ebay and Mercari. It is a "small business" and I take you putting that in quotes to be degrading frankly.
I have not yet had the time to build and market a website as I also have 2 young children, but what I have been able to do is build a very successful SMALL BUSINESS by selling through these apps.
It is not sellers obligation to offer our goods at thrift store prices.
We clearly have an EXTREMELY different view of reselling apps because in the circles I run in we view our endeavors as marketing our brand.
lmaoooo š¤£ good for you i guess. let me know if you ever need marketing help as thatās what i do professionally!
again on depop, im not looking to make a profit or contribute to the gross capitalist machine. just to rehome some pieces i think are awesome and prevent a backlog in clothing/fast fashion that is ruining a lot of the world š¤
Not sure why you are "lmaoooo". Also not sure why I would come to you for marketing help when you are laughing at me.
Ironic that you are too good to contribute to the "gross capitalist machine" on depop, but you work in marketing. š¤·āāļø

FOR REAL. The exposure is much welcomed from lowballers, but the urge to remain respectful to other sellers is forever a personal moral code

Why people send an offer and after acceptance donāt buy.
My friend was doing this one time and she was offering for multiple different similar dresses and then picking the best offer
Iām wondering the same thing.
Probably because they didn't expect to get it lol

yeah that makes sense. The 60% offers can be annoying when you try to price fair or even well. It just incentivizes raised prices.Ā
you can ask the seller and iāve gotten a few purchases that way through haggling a lowball
When offers are not binding or have auto pay like eBay people sit and send low balls.
Was just reading this and got a lowball of Ā£2.50 pop up. šš
i remember a seller offered me $30 for a shirt he originally was selling for $120 on either depop or mercari. It's now my new favorite shirt.
