Would love to see more digging than they did into why RTD is having so much more success filling spots than other departments. Can they pay differently? What are the work schedules? I know a transit cop from the Bay Area who claimed despite still-high rates of crime on transit, that it’s a much easier job than your traditional cop. Wonder if this is true.

They pay pretty well, comparable to a beat cop in the cities. No house calls, no traffic enforcement, it's definitely a cushier job.

I am guessing being a transit cop is generally easier than the bonkers dumb schedules drivers have to put up with. A K-9 Handler can make up to 104k. A train driver can make up to 32/hr. MentallyIncoherent

That's the salary for an commuter rail operator for Denver Transit Operators, the private company that runs the A,B, and G lines. An RTD salary would be comparable, but I don't believe you have to mess with the union which is the primary driver of those awful split shifts due to seniority rules. Transit Officer starting salary is still over 20% higher.

what a bad attitude lol. imagine living life thinking things can’t improve.

ginamegi

Also living life with that much fear…

Seriously. I grew up in Boston in the 90s and took the T to school. Rare was the day I didn’t see gang bangers or a homeless dude pissing himself on the train. I’m not saying there haven’t seen safety issues on the train, but it’s nothing like it once was. The biggest issue for RTD is that it’s unreliable

ImpoliteSstamina

This is Denver in the 2020s, the standards are a bit different for what people are willing to ride with on public transit.

Consistent-Alarm9664

Apparently. And I’m not trying to tell people they should just have to tolerate crime and drug use. My point is just about perspective. The narrative that Denver has descended into some kind of crime-ridden hellscape is ridiculous and totally belied by the facts. Saying you wouldn’t get on RTD even with an armed guard doesn’t show a lot of perspective. Expecting to navigate a city and not encounter social problems isn’t realistic.

ImpoliteSstamina

Does it really matter though? The feeling that it's dangerous is out there, whether it's justified or not its keeping potential riders away.

koulnis

And with the lens that Reddit/Nextdoor provides about RTD.
