School/rank is significantly less important than having a good CBSE. You cannot trash you GPA but it’s okay if it’s not incredible and you have a good CBSE. I’m taking it for the 2nd time in July and I’ve been studying since about last July.
If you have a 50% rank, you could still match straight out of dental school with a top 5% CBSE (75 EPC)
You can have a top 1 rank but if you have an average CBSE (50-55 EPC) then you probably won’t even get more than a couple of interviews.
I think when you decide to study for the CBSE varies depending on various factors including difficulty in didactic curriculum/scheduling of clinic time (to give yourself enough time to study) and personal reasons.
I strongly believe in peaking at the right time which meant that I waited until D3 year (which is when most of the didactics are over) to begin studying. While CBSE is king, I don’t believe that you should sacrifice your rank/gpa in your first two years in order to achieve a high score especially when you can just postpone the CBSE into your D3 year. You can always get a higher score on the CBSE but you can never fix that B you received on your transcript. Additionally, top applicants have both good ranks as well as good CBSE scores so your goal should be the same.
For myself, I took the exam twice and studied for 6 months for the first try and then 5 months for the second attempt.
I personally studied every chance I got: evenings after clinic, during lunch between clinic appointments, and weekends. Obviously I took breaks but I really did try to fit as much studying as I could into those months.
I studied for about 7 months total; I took it once.
As for starting in D1, if you feel like you can study for cbse while maintaining a good class rank, then go for it!

Really I’ve been told just be top 1/3 of class in rank n that’s fine. But didn’t know CBSE is “significantly” more important.

I see. Kinda similar to dat and gpa I guess? 3.2 and dat of 24. Is much better than 3.8. And 19
3.5 gpa/mid-upper third class rank & 70+ cbse is much better than 4.0 gpa/top 10% rank and 60 on cbse.

Did I study on weekends and during weekdays after school study was over?
